Building a Community of Support
Scientifi c discovery is a core value and pillar in ASA’s strategic plan. What sep-arates medicine – and particularly our specialty – from other professions is our foundation in science. It is this aspect of innovation and new knowledge that transforms technical work into the practice of medicine. I’m so proud of the work FAER does to develop future leaders in science. The level of talent we see in these
young researchers is incredible, but even better is the game-changing innovation that so many FAER awardees are responsible for as their careers are allowed to develop. I want to thank you and other loyal FAER donors for your support in 2018. Your commitment to FAER’s mission is very much appreciated by the ASA, volunteers and staff. For more than 30 years, FAER has been one of our specialty’s most prolifi c supporters of leaders in academics and research. The organization is an important partner and ASA is proud to support its work. Linda J. Mason, M.D., FASA, President, ASA

Dear FAER Supporter:
On behalf of the entire FAER Board of Directors, thank you for your commitment to FAER in 2018.
Because of you, FAER was able to do great things. In Fall 2018, we entered our fi rst grant cycle of MRTG awards at $250,000. Since that time, FAER has seen a more than 25% increase in Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG) applications. I thank you for being part of this success and many others. Here is a snapshot of the impact FAER has made in the past year. With the addition of our fi rst MRTG Annual Meet-ing in 2019, FAER is truly building a life-long community of support for physician-scientists in anesthesiolo-gy. None of these efforts would be possible without your dedication, commitment and investment in FAER and our mission. I am pleased to provide you with a fi nancial wrap-up of our year completed on December 31, 2018. You will fi nd this information near the end of this report along with key highlights from the year. Thank you for your commitment to our specialty and for understanding the important role that FAER plays in its future.
I also want to especially thank our founding supporter, the American Society of Anesthesiol-ogists. Their yearly commitment to FAER ensures that works stays timely and relevant for the future of the specialty.

“I have been a recipient of two FAER awards and these monies have had direct influence on developing my career as an academic anesthesiologist. Furthermore, as the director of a host site for the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF), I see how these awards encourage medical students to garner interest in clinical and academic anesthesiology. FAER is supporting the next generation of anesthesiologists to not only ignite their imaginations and careers, but to develop further research in anesthesiology, which is not only good for our discipline, but for the care of our patients as well.” Brant M. FAER congratulates our former grantees who received National Institute of Health (NIH) K and R awards in 2018. With focuses rang-ing from basic science career development (K08), to patient-orient-ed career development (K23) to independent investigator initiated research (R01), NIH awards, like FAER’s own awards, ensure the con-tinued growth of both anesthesiology as a specialty as well as its prac-titioners. The physician-scientists listed below exemplify a commitment to this growth that FAER looks for and strives to foster in our grantees, and we look forward to seeing the important work these individuals conduct through the NIH’s funding.
From FAER To Federally Funded
“As someone who has been an outspoken advocate for the practice of anesthesiology, the importance of research and funding our medical sciences is fundamental to our existence and to the advancement of safe patient care. Only recently did I become aware of how much my individual donation to FAER could make a difference. Like my ASAPAC contribution, my support of FAER has become an annual ritual.” Kenneth Elmassian, D.O., FASA

“FAER is a wonderful resource for early-career anesthesiologists interested in becoming physician-scientists. The MRTG allowed me the support and time necessary to build an academic founda-tion on which to grow. I am very thankful that FAER provides this opportunity.”
Andrei D. Sdrulla, M.D., Ph.D.
“The FAER award provided critical funding to start my research program and ensured that I received protected time during a vul-nerable period of my career. It helped me establish critical men-torship relationships and focused my research and career devel-opment plans. Furthermore, I believe that my success securing
K08 level funding depended heavily on the constructive criticism received during the FAER grant application process. In my opinion, the FAER grant mechanism coupled with a supportive department are essential components of a pathway to independence as a clinician scientist.”

6 FAER 2018 ANNUAL REPORT
Charles W. Emala Sr., M.S., M.D.Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons New York, New York
David O. Warner, M.D. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN
The FAER Mentoring Excellence in Research award honors those individuals who, through their activities as mentors, have contributed importantly to the development and advancement of academic anes-thesiologists in the area of research, and have promoted the activities of mentoring among others in the specialty, increasing academic ac-tivity in research and enhancing research success in academic anesthe-siology. FAER was delighted to recognize Charles W. Emala Sr., M.S., M.D., as the 2018 Mentoring Excellence in Research recipient. As a testament to the quality of mentorship in basic science, Dr. Emala has directly mentored 7 recipients of FAER-funded awards, many of whom have continued on to receive NIH funding. Dr. Emala has remained heavily invested in the future of science in anesthesiology, having served on the FAER Academy of Research Mentors in Anesthesiology since 2008.
The FAER-Helrich Research Lecture recognizes outstanding scholarship by a scientist. It is part of an effort by FAER to encourage early-career anes-thesiologists and trainees to consider careers in research and teaching.
Even in a “post truth” society, facts and evidence still matter. Yet facts and evidence alone are often not sufficient to achieve the difficult task of changing clinical practice. Practice changes are too often driven by economic factors or enthusiasm for over-hyped “breakthroughs”, while simple, effective measures languish because of low commercial-ization potential. Translational research aims to use science to guide changes in healthcare policy and practice. The 2018 FAER-Helrich Research Lecture highlighted both the challenges and benefits of translational research, illustrated by specific examples of important translational problems in perioperative medicine.
“Dr. Emala gave me unlimited support and encouragement as a resident, as a clinical/research fellow and as a faculty member at Columbia. I am certain that my career would not have taken the course it did without his enthusias-tic support, mentorship and grace.” – H. Thomas Lee, M.D., Ph.D.
Columbia University
“Dr. Emala is very committed to my professional development and has done everything possible to ensure my success. He has truly taught me what it takes to succeed in academic anesthesiology and has been an integral part of my success every step along the way.” – Jennifer Danielsson, M.D.
Columbia University
“Though Dr. Emala is certainly a brilliant scientist, this is not the key to his remarkably successful mentorship. The key is his nev-er-failing selflessness and dedication to his mentees. It is obvious to us all that he takes more joy in our successes than his own and works more tirelessly editing our grants and manuscripts than writing his own (and he has the spent red pens to prove it). He has actively guided the expansion of my collaborations and mentorship network beyond himself as my scientific pursuits have branched from his.” – Gene Thomas Yocum, M.D.

This session at ANESTHESIOLOGY 2018 showcased anesthesiologists with ideas for innovations interacting with a panel of experts involved in develop-ing and bringing such innovations to market in order to educate the audience about the steps involved in the process.
“FAER’s MSARF program gives medical students a unique oppor-tunity to explore the field of anes-thesiology early on in their medical school journey. The fellowship provides a valuable introduction to both clinical practice and research in anesthesiology. Students are able to form connections with faculty members and researchers at another academic institutions. Overall, MSARF has been monu-mental in my decision to pursue a career in anesthesia.” – Megha Vipani,

“Dr. Avidan engendered my interest in anesthesiology research through his own enthusiasm for research. His nurturing personality and his love for teaching helped me to grow in this field.”
Mentorship is a vital component to building a successful and productive career in medicine. Many FAER do-nors have chosen to recognize the outstanding mentors who support and guide future physician-scientists by make tribute gifts to the foundation in their honor.
In the fall of 2018, FAER ran an Honor Your Mentor campaign, asking individuals to donate to FAER in hon-or of a mentor in their life. The campaign secured three matching gifts and raised more than $30,000. Here are some of the mentor tributes FAER received over the course of the campaign.

SOCIETY FOR ANESTHESIA EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
“The SAAAPM Council is thrilled to be able to co-fund an MRTG with FAER. These grants are so important to early-career physician-scientists in anesthesiology. MRTGs help physician-anesthesiologists develop the skills, preliminary data for subsequent grant applications, and research publications needed to become independent investigators, all of which are very important to us in academic anesthesiology,” Peter Rock, M.D., M.B.A., FCCM, SAAAPM Past President
