FROM OUR PASTOR / DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO

Dear friends,

What would you focus on if you had to choose from among these options this Sunday: the week of prayer for Christian Unity, the March for Life and the events surrounding it, Word of God Sunday, the excellent Sunday Mass readings, and the constant important Mystery of the Real Presence in the Eucharist? The answer is, of course, obvious. And it reminds me of an image I mentioned last week in a homily and that I keep thinking about—the sight and sound of a short video my brother sent from a workday back at the ranch, a video of baby lambs crying out for their mothers.

The video itself is quite short. A good number of tiny newborn lambs are running about while the other sheep are being fed. There is an excitement (can you recog-nize sheep excitement?) in the air but also the angst of being separated temporarily from their mothers. Sheep find each other by bleating, calling out to each other. In the homily last Sunday I mentioned that my brother had heard a more heart-wrenching kind of cry from some baby lambs—the cry they make when they do not find their mothers, the kind of cry they make when they have been left behind, even rejected. In some cases, the mother sheep has died. In every case, it is a moving and sad sound, one which demands a response. I mentioned it last week and again now because it is normal for us to be moved to action when there is an obvious and serious need. I mention it again today because, sadly, we live in a time when more and more people find it acceptable to ignore the silent cries of unborn children who are in danger of abortion. Please hear their cries and the also often silent pain of their mothers. Can you do something to make it normal for every life to be welcomed and supported? Can you be part of the healing process for the many moms struggling with the pain of loss from a past choice, a choice which could have been different?

The dream of unity among Christians, like the urgency of building a Culture of Life, is one that will occur when we learn to fix our attention—mind, heart, and soul—on the person of Jesus. That is the obvious answer to the many things calling for our attention: focus on Jesus. God’s In-spired Word teaches us the way of compassion and mercy and it also reveals so plainly the Mystery of the Eucharist. Today (and tomorrow and beyond), see that God’s reve-lation is fulfilled around us because we hear it and live it, strengthened by the power of the Bread of Life.

With my prayers,

Fr. Matthew ZuberbuelerPastor

Queridos amigos,

During this first year of our 3-year preparation for the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Arlington, Bishop Burbidge asks us to Remember that the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Catholic Life. Don’t let the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist be the Undiscovered Treasure in your life. In this space, we

will feature excerpts from Eucharistic Miracles by Joan Carroll Cruz.

Eucharistic Miracles:

In 1228, in Altari, Italy, a young woman was seeking a love potion to attract a suitor. An older woman told her take the Eucharist from her mouth after receiving Holy Communion and bring it home so a potion could be made from the Body of the King of Hearts. The young woman hid the Host in a pouch in her house but her conscience bothered her so much that in two days time she went to retrieve the Sacred Host and return it to the church. Upon unwrapping it, she discovered that the Host was no longer bread but living flesh. The local priest was notified and immediately shared the miracle with the Bishop. Both women publicly admitted what they did were repentant of their sin of sacrilege. The matter of their penance was determined by Pope Gregory IX who acknowledged the miracle. The miracu-lous Host is displayed in Altari on the first Sunday after Easter and the first Sunday after Pentecost.
