To nominate someone for this award, call the DPS Foundation at 217-424-3300 or print out the nomination form on our website, www.dps61.org/ foundation. Alumni will be honored at our 8th annual “Celebrate! The Legacy of Learning” award dinner on Saturday, November 13th, 2010. THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF THE DECATUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION T he Decatur Public Schools Foundation (DPSF) has created a permanent col- lection of band and orchestra instruments available for loan to qualifying stu- dents of District 61. Though there are currently more than eighty instruments available, the need remains greater than the supply. Please check your attic, basement, and closets for gently used instruments and consider donating them to the DPSF. Instruments may be dropped off at Thompson-Kramer Music on 2102 N. Oakland or at the DPSF office on 601 N. Church St. Your donation is tax-deductible! Used Instruments Needed! “The band programs at my schools were greatly enhanced by the foundation’s Instrument Library. Students who would not have been able to participate in the past were thrilled to be part of band this year!” –Nate Saltus, Elementary Band Teacher T he Millikin DSI (Decatur Science Investigations) team offered many new science stations at the second annual Family Science Night, held at Millikin on May 3rd. These stations encouraged fami- lies to explore the science behind bubbles, electricity, water, optical allusions, sound, and prism diffraction. There was a hover- craft for all to ride on, a fun recycling game, and a cool experiment that changed pennies from bronze to silver to gold! Family Science Night was created to encourage the active participation of families in science education and is part of a comprehensive DPSF science initiative that includes a science coach for District 61 elementary teachers, classroom materi- als for inquiry- based learning, and the traveling DSI Van, which puts on science shows for schools and community events. Look for the DSI team at the local Decatur parks this sum- mer, bringing exciting new stations and shows.
