W05 – The Secrets To Using Color To Set The Mood In Any RoomWednesday, March 20 • 8:30 – 10:00am • BALLROOM 102[ AAA=1.5 CO; BOMI=1.5 CPDs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU ]Color is the most valuable tool you can use to set the mood in any design. Understanding how color, color contrast, and the elements of design work together to create mood is the key to being able to create rooms with mood and style.

Kate Smith will explain how and why people react to color. You may be amazed to find that your color intuition has deep basis in research, history, and even culture, where one color can have vastly different meanings across societies. This overview of color messages and meanings will give you a new perspective on the general responses to color that can affect the color schemes you create.

Then you will discover how color in a living space evokes mood and emotion both consciously or unconsciously. Smith will show you how to overcome the challenge of effectively using color and design to express a mood by understanding how viewers perceive and react to the overall scheme. You will learn how to incorporate psychology, physiology, meanings, and symbolism into your color schemes in a way that infuses your designs with feeling.

You will leave the workshop with a thorough understanding of how to use color to set the mood along with a tips sheet that list the elements that create the 8 moods most often requested by your clients.Presenter:Kate Smith, Color Expert, Author, Speaker, Chief Color Maven and President, Sensational Color (New York)

The Age of Social Media has started a myth that the FacetoFace interaction is no longer necessary or effective in growing your business — Nothing can be farther from the truth.

In this session we will discuss the fundamental difference between marketing and prospecting and explore the limitation Social Media platforms (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook etc.) have on growing our business. Furthermore we will look at how we can balance our networking activities — from Social Media to Networking Events — and what we can do to actively increase our referrals.Presenter:Randy Hnatko, President, Trainwest Management and Consulting Inc.

Biography:Randy Hnatko is President of Trainwest Management and Consulting, a Sales and Management Training and Consulting organization affiliated with the Sandler Training Organization. Randy has over 30 year’s senior business experience, and is a Trainer, Speaker, Author and Consultant to domestic and international companies. SEMINAR STREAMS: PM PROPERTY MANAGEMENT AD ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN CO CONSTRUCTION & RENOVATION PD PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GR GREEN

T U E S D A Y, M A R C H 19

T03 – Consumer Protection and Home Renovations — Understanding the Contractor’s ObligationsTuesday, March 19 • 8:30 – 9:30am • ROOM 109[ AAA=1.0 SD; BOMI=1.0 CPD ]The Fair Trading Act is consumer protection legislation that creates special obligations for home renovation contractors in Alberta. These requirements apply to any contract where the consumer pays a deposit before the work starts. This seminar is directed towards renovation contractors who want to ensure they are in full compliance with the Act and who want to differentiate their business from competitors who do not comply with the law. The seminar will highlight licencing, the security deposit paid to the Director of Fair Trading, and required wording in written contracts.Presenter:Philip Carson, Partner, Miller Thomson LLP

T04 – Neighbourhoods as a Function of HealthTuesday, March 19 • 8:30 – 10:00am • ROOM 109A[ AAA=1.5 CO; BOMI=1.5 CPDs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU ]This presentation addresses the issues of housing needs and health care. It offers a holistic and integrated solution that is rooted in human settlements as sustainable and resilient ecosystems, designed to optimize quality of life and life potential.

Imagine an ideal neighbourhood ecosystem that is liveable and inclusive, accommodating residents of all ages. What elements are present in this ecosystem? How does its design influence the physical, mental, and emotional health, development, and life potential of its residents? How does it impact the challenges of increasing urbanization, an aging population, and the fracturing of social cohesion?

Now, more than ever, it is imperative that the sustainable development dialogue expands beyond environmental wellbeing to include human and social wellbeing. We can create neighbourhoods that cultivate healthy individuals, families, and communities and result in healthier economies at both the micro and macro levels. The design for these living environments emerges from a deep, grounded view and understanding of human life and the integral needs of human beings.Presenters:David Faber, Community Leader and Strategic Planning Consultant, VisiV Inc. – Creative Solutions to Complex

ProblemsLaura-Belle Robinson, Consultant, Place Shaping

T05 – Efficiency in Construction: Quality Management SystemTuesday, March 19 • 8:30 – 10:00am • BALLROOM 101[ AAA=1.5 CO; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ]Operational excellence required in today’s ever evolving and complex Construction Management Industry can be achieved by adapting a simple mechanism of ‘planexecutecheckproceed’; namely a Quality Management System. Historically Quality Management Systems have been developed specifically for the Production Industry that operates in standardized environment. For suitability to a dynamic Projectbased Construction Management/Contracting environment, a Quality Management System needs to lend Consistency to Operations whilst permitting Flexibility necessary to ensure Customer satisfaction by addressing the specific needs of each Customer location and industry served. Consistency can be achieved by implementing enterprise wide standardization for the key work processes. And Flexibility can be achieved by providing baseline criteria for execution and operational guidance to operations.Presenter:Neil Solankurkar, Quality Process Manager, Graham Group Ltd.

T06 – Design for Workplace Well-Being – Beyond Fitness Centers and ErgonomicsTuesday, March 19 • 8:30 – 10:00am • BALLROOM 102[ AAA=1.5 CO; BOMI=1.5 CPDs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU ]The sustainability movement has lead to a new awareness of how to design buildings to be more sustainable. But what are we doing for the occupant? True, greener buildings are healthier for the occupant with better lighting, more access to natural daylight, reduced exposure to toxins and increased fresh air. But that’s not enough. Sitting stagnantly at a desk staring at a computer all day is killing us faster than anything else.

Kay Sargent Sue Schmidt

Presenters:Kay Sargent, Vice President Architecture, Design and Workplace Strategies, TeknionSue Schmidt, Well-Being Design Leader, Healthways

T09 – Becoming a Pre-approved Supplier of SELECT ServicesTuesday, March 19 • 11:00am – 12:30pm • ROOM 109A[ AAA=1.5 SD; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ]Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) acquires Construction, Architectural and Engineering services as well as related Maintenance and Consulting services on behalf of other federal government departments and agencies. For projects of estimated value of up to $78,500 for Consulting and $100,000 for Construction, PWGSC uses SELECT, a database of approved suppliers to invite firms to bid on Real Property Contracting opportunities. Companies can apply to register in the database by providing company information related to trades and specialties, licences and completed projects. The presentation will address how the database is used and the application process.Presenter:Rita Brown, Manager, Public Works and Government Services Canada

T10 – What App is this Anyway?Tuesday, March 19 • 11:00am – 12:30pm • BALLROOM 102[ AAA=1.5 SD; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ]There are four competing operating systems for the dozens of smart phones and tablets that claim to be the answer to designer and builder prayers in the field. The presenter, an experienced architect now working for one of Canada’s largest builders, has monitored these four operating systems and key hardware for the past four years to identify the most cost and time effective solutions for the design and construction industry.Presenter:Brian Palmquist, Director, Quality, Ledcor Construction Limited

T12 – Mould – Practical Management of a Complex IssueTuesday, March 19 • 2:00 – 3:30pm • BALLROOM 102[ AAA=1.5 CO; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ]Mould issues become more difficult with time and with inadequate response due to misinformation. Our session will explore construction and building management practices to help prevent and respond to indoor fungal contamination. Attendees will hear some real life problems and solutions from recent studies. Participants will gain practical knowledge on how to manage mould in the workplace and more specifically during construction projects.Presenter:Mike Thomson, Practice Leader – Mould and Infection Control, PHH ARC Environmental Ltd.

T14 – Understanding Building Owner, Tenant and Contractor Relations During a Green RetrofitTuesday, March 19 • 2:00 – 3:30pm • ROOM 109A[ AAA=1.5 SD; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ]As new, efficient and sometimes LEED® certified buildings pop up around existing ones, building owners are taking action to improve their existing asset to be more competitive with neighbouring new buildings. The challenge? Retrofit usually happens while the building is occupied. New construction never deals with this problem as tenants move in after the project is complete. SEMINAR STREAMS: PM PROPERTY MANAGEMENT AD ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN CO CONSTRUCTION & RENOVATION PD PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GR GREENINDUSTRY SESSIONSW13 – Asbestos!!? What You Should Know Before You StartWednesday, March 20 • 2:00 – 4:00pm • ROOM 109[ AAA=2.0 CO; BOMI=2.0 CPDs ]Whether renovating a room or adding onto an existing structure, demoing a wall or scraping a ceiling to place in new lighting; hazardous materials such as asbestos can be found in many building materials. Found in every nook and cranny, residential, commercial and industrial settings have utilized this product in many building materials throughout a 40 year period.

This seminar will look at the materials, testing, procedures and legalities that you should consider prior to starting your job. You will understand the materials in buildings which may contain asbestos and the correct procedures to take while dealing with this common hazardous material.Presenter:John MacDonald, Principal, Alberta Safety & Environmental Services Ltd.

W14 – Regenerative Energy Efficient RetrofitsWednesday, March 20 • 2:00 – 3:30pm • BALLROOM 101[ AAA=1.5 CO; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ]True sustainability should be defined as a lifestyle designed for permanence. It would not be environmentally or economically responsible to try to rebuild commercial buildings faster than due course dictates, so regenerative retrofits are the best answer. This talk will cover how to set regenerative retrofit priorities and offer case studies to illustrate how district energy, biofuels, natural gas, cogeneration, solar, wind and geothermal should be assessed, mixed and matched and prioritized to drive towards true sustainability through regenerative retrofits.Presenter:Dan Cloutier, President, Power Ecosystems Inc.

W15 – Redirecting the Silk Road of Curtain-Wall SystemsWednesday, March 20 • 2:00 – 3:30pm • BALLROOM 102[ AAA=1.5 CO; BOMI=1.5 CPDs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU ]Despite the increasing use of glass in buildings, there is no full understanding of the glazing systems from many in the construction industry including owners, architects, code consultants, mechanical and structural engineers. Beside the appearance, many performance parameters are involved in determining the best curtain wall system for a building, such as: daylight, view, thermal performance, condensation risk, security, safety, fire resistance, sound insulation, glass strength, structural adequacy and weathertightness.

The question, that needs to be answered by architects and engineers, is: “What is the best curtain wall for my building?” For offtheshelf systems, the answer is relatively easy as those systems have testing and track records. Any deviation from that scenario, and we end up with many unknowns. Furthermore, there is a shift in the North American market for mid to highrise buildings to use curtain wall systems that are manufactured overseas.

The most efficient tool to verify weathertightness and structural performance is testing. Understanding the testing procedures and associated standards (ASTM & AAMA) would mitigate errors/mistakes and give confidence in selecting the appropriate curtain wall, especially for a project with international team.

The presentation will discuss RJC experience with overseas systems used on a local highrise including the advantages and difficulties encountered. In addition, the talk will cover: brief mention of curtain wall history, different curtain wall types. Two case studies will be included throughout.Presenter:Amir Hassan, Project Engineer, Building Science and Restoration, Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd.
