    Define the Tank Data

    Now that you have a project file, you need to define the basic tank data.

    1. Select Home > Input > General Tank Data, or click General Tank Data in the Inputpanel.

    TANK opens the dialog box to the Tank Datatab.

    2. Enter the tank data as shown.

    Define the Shell CoursesNext, you are ready to define the shell courses.

    1. Select the Shell Coursestab.

    With the general tank data and shell courses defined, you are ready to define the roof specifications.

    1. Select Roof Specification Parameters on the Home > Inputpanel.

    TANK opens the dialog to the General Roof Specstab.

    2. For Roof Type, select Cone.

    3. Type 15 for the angle et!een the roof and hori"ontal.#. Type 5.$ for Net Area at Roof/Shell Junction.

    This dialog box displays the current job name, the major solution steps to the analysis, and which solution steps are required by the currentinput data. As each solution step is entered, an asterisk displays next to the i tem to show the current progress. There is no user interaction orinput during the solution phase. The analysis/solution phase consists of implementing the rules and equations found in the AP!"#$ and AP!"#% codes. A brief o&er&iew of this phase can be found in the 'olution (&er&iewsection.

    TANK Program Files

    TA)* creates files to sa&e the analysis information.

    Binary Output Data (TKO) File

    After successfully completing an analysis, the analysis module creates the T*( file, which contains the solution data in binary format. TheT*( file is used by subsequent modules to formulate and generate the &arious reports and graphics.

    Message (TXT) File

    (ccasionally, you might want to know how an iteration proceeded or the results of an intermediate computation. The message file +TT-contains this information. As important milestones in the analysis are reached, TA)* labels the newly computed data and writes it to themessage file.

    se this message file in the e&ent that the software encounters an error and TA)* aborts and displays a diagnostic message. ecause thesoftware aborted before an output +T*(- file exists, you cannot access the (utput Processor. n this instance, re&iew the message file for

    intermediate and partial solution data, which may re&eal some reasons for the error. The message file is a standard A'0 text file, which canbe &iewed with a &ariety of editors or printed to the system printer. 1ou can also access the message file from Tools > File Review > Reviewmessage file.

    Solution Overview

    2. Allowable stresses for both the design and test cases - The material control routine includes considerations for reductions due totemperature fromAppendix Mand if necessaryAppendix SandAPI-653 Section 2requirements. The allowables for each shell courseare determined individually based on the specified course materials.

    3. Required shell course thicknesses - This thickness is based on the specified design method, either one-foot, variable point, orAppendix A. The appropriate sections of the code are implemented using the material properties to determine the thicknesses for eachcourse for the design and test cases. Each thickness computation is then followed by a check ofAPI-650 Section 5.6.1.1to insure thatthe minimum thickness requirements of the code are met. f the input indicates that the software is to operate in analyi mode to rate ane!isting tank, the design and test thicknesses "ust computed are replaced with the users input thicknesses for subsequent computations.

    $. Allowed fluid heights - This procedure involves the use of the same code sections used in the thickness determination. n the case ofthe variable point method, this is an iterative process.

    %. Shell weight and center of gravity -The weight&center of gravity routine compares the computed shell weight with that specified by theuser, and selects the !axi!"! of the two for subsequent computations inAppendix #.

    '. Overturning stability - This value is checked according to Section 5.11.

    (. Wind girder requirements - The number of girders, their section moduli, and their locations are determined according toAPI-650Section 5.$. )ind girder detail and si*e is then selected fromAPI-650 %able 5-22.

    This concludes the general computations performed for each tank input data set. #ll subsequent computations are optional depending onuser specification.

    Roof Data - f the roof data has been specified, the software evaluates, analy*es, or designs the roof. +oof evaluation involves weightsummations, required thicknesses and net areas according toAPI-650 Section 5.10.5 or5.10.6. The analysis or design of a supportedcone roof applies the procedures outlined in rownell oung. /ollowing the roof design, the Section 5.10.3checks are implemented.

    AP-!"# A$$endi% & requirements - #fter the actual roof computations are completed, theAPI-650 Appendix Frequirements areevaluated.

    #lso note that the roof weights computed from a design are used in subsequent 0seismic1 computations.

    Seismic requirements of AP-!"# A$$endi% ' - The guidelines of this appendi! are applied to the tank in three conditions design, test,and empty.

    (o))le fle%ibility calculations as outlined in AP-!"# A$$endi% P - This appendi! also offers guidelines on the ma!imum allowedno**le loads. The software determines the fle!ibilities and limiting loads on up to fifteen no**les for all three sets of shell coursethicknesses 0design, test, and user input1.

    *rillage com$utations - These computations conform to the rules ofAPI-650 Appendix I& Section '.

    Settlement limits as set forth in AP-!"+ A$$endi% , - These computations use an iterative procedure to determine the optimumcosine curve which most closely represents the users measured values of shell settlement. #fter the cosine curve is known, the out-of-plane settlement and out-of-plane deflection can be determined.

    Servicemaintenance com$utations - These computations are based onAPI-653 Section 2.

    AP-.### /enting calculations.

    #fter all si*ing, roof, and seismic computations have been completed, the evaluation for the permitted cycle life according toAppendix M&Section M.(begins.

    /ollowing the cycle life calculations, the bolting requirements are checked. This procedure evaluates each of the load cases defined in4ection %.52 and determines, if necessary, the required number of bolts and the bolt si*e. # second pass is then made to determine thegoverning condition and to report a single bolt si*e and quantity, with the corresponding stress for each load case.

    6ost of the time spent reviewing the results of a T#78 analysis is in reviewing tabular reports. These reports are organi*ed by topic. )henthe analysis phase completes, the Out$ut Processor displays the various reports.

    Each entry in the Re$ort 0istdisplays a different report. 6ultiple reports can be selected or removed from the selection by using the 9T+:key in combination with a left mouse click.     The following commands appear on the Home tab for the Output Processor.

    File Panel

    Open -Opens an existing report, which means you are switching the output to a different job. This option opensthe standard File Open dialog box that shows only those jobs who have been analyzed and have output files.

    Save -Saves the selected report.

    Print -Prints the selected report. lic! the down arrow to see the following addition print options"

    Print to File # Prints the selected report to a text file and saves it where you indicate.Print to File Then Run Word -Prints the selected report to a text file and then opens it in $icrosoft %ord.

    %hen you send reports to $icrosoft %ord, if a file named header.docexists in the T&'( system folder,the software reads its contents uses them in the page header when T&'( exports the report to %ord. Therefore,you can set up a header file with the company logo and address details, should you want those to appear onyour reports.

    Word Document -reates the report using $icrosoft %ord.

    Previous -)isplays the previous report.

    Next -)isplays the next report.

    Edit Panel

    Delete -)eletes the selected report from the Report ist and the generated output.

    Select -Selects reports or the text within reports, depending on what you select in drop#down options.

    The Error Checker .LOG Filereport is generated by the error checker. This report contains a list of every warning message and errorgenerated during the error check of the input data.

    The Solution o!ule .T"T Filereport contains the contents of the message file generated by the solution module. The size of this reportvaries depending on which solution routines were needed and how many iterations were necessary to determine the results.

    The values reported in the message file are shown in English units T!"# internal system units$. !ll other values in all of the otheroutput reports are shown in the units system that you specified.

    The #in!$ aterial$ Thickness % #eightsreport contains formal output data computed by T!"#. It begins with a summary of the windparameters used during the analysis, consisting of the velocity factor, the area e%posed to the wind, and the wind moment.

    The ne%t section of the report reflects the material properties used, including the wind girder height reduction factor. &or each shell course,the material name, design allowable stress, test allowable stress, and !ppendi% ' reduction factor are listed.

    The ne%t section of the report details the final shell course thicknesses for the design and test cases. The user-defined shell course thicknessis also reported here, as well as the minimum allowed metal temperature as obtained from !PI-()* &igure +-. The thickness used inimplementing this &igure is the ma%imum of the design and test cases.

    &or !PI-() analysis, the ne%t section of the output contains a table showing the retiring thickness and remaining corrosion allowance foreach course.

    The ne%t section of the report details the allowed fluid heights for the design and test cases, as well as the reuired fluid height is also shownin the table.

    The ne%t section includes the annular base plate thickness and width, the weight of the shell, and the center of gravity of the shell.

    The ne%t section details the results of the /wind overturning stability check/, based on !PI-()* 0ection )..

    The ne%t section of this report details the results of the wind girder computations.     Following the column sizing details is the summary of the checks made according to Section 5.10.3. These checks determine theacceptability of the structural elements based on allowable stresses and unbraced lengths.

    Following these checks is a weight summary of the supported cone roof components.

    Paging Options

    Starting Page - Overrides the starting page number for this group of reports. Use this function when ou have to combine multiple reports

    The software displays the 3D model, upon input. owever, certain elements do not appear until you analyze the tank.

    !ou can view and save output in "D view by clicking 2D Viewat the bottom of the graphics model.

    !ou can #uickly view basic details about tank elements by pressing $T%& and hovering over the element.

    'n addition to showing the outer surfaces, you can also view the 3D model in different shading modes, such as flat shaded and (ourard. Thesoftware also supports operations, such as panning, zooming, and model rotation.

    %ight)click anywhere on the 3D view to display the context menu. The toolbar for performing some basic operations appears on the right sideview. *or more information, see 3D (raphics Toolbar.

    Options ) +ctivates the Plot Propertiesdialog with which you can customize the colors ofelements in the display.

    Visibility ) Select and clear the different options to display and hide that element in the 3Dgraphics view. *or example, you might want to hide the roof to get a better view inside ofthe tank shell. The elements are not deleted from the model, ust hidden.

    Render Mode ) Select how you want the surfaces and edges to display on the model.$hoose between Flat Shaded-shows obects with shaded surfaces and outlined edges orGouraud Shaded-shows the obects with shaded surfaces and smooth edges.

    View Orthographic ) Displays all obects the same relative size regardless of the distancefrom the observer.

    View Perspective ) Specifies that the view should display the tank using perspectiverendering. /erspective rendering is characterized by0

    The size of obects appears smaller as their distance from the observer increases.

    The size of obect dimensions along the line of sight is smaller relative to thedimensions across the line of sight.

    The Plot > Plot Tank Elevations option in the local raphics environment enerates an overall tank sketch with a number of optionaldetails. The tank sketch is useful to et an overall representation of the si)e of the tank.

    Click the down arrow on the Plot Tank Elevations icon to access several additional functions.

    1se Plot Tank Elevations > Show Course Labelsto show or hide the course heiht and material thickness values in the plot. Theselabels appear in the lower riht and start with C2, C!, C!, and so forth.

    Use Plot Settlement > Plot measured elevationsto show or hide the measured elevations on the plot.

    Use Plot Settlement > Plot optimum cosine curveto show or hide the optimum cosine curve on the plot.

    Use Plot Settlement > Plot out-of-plan deflectionto show or hide the out-of-plane deflection on the plot.

    Use Plot Settlement > Display Plot Legendto show or hide the legend on the plot.

    Use Plot Settlement > Spline all data for displayto spline the plot data. Splining the data smooths the plot points into curves andmakes for better presentations.

    The settlement plot uses two Y-axes. The far left Y-axis is for the out-of-plane deflection curve. The Y-axis closest to the curves is for themeasured and optimum cosine curves. These axes and their associated curves are shown in different colors for better visualization.

    The settlement plot positions the curves on an X-axis showing the relative angular position around the tank circumference from the point ofmaximum settlement. The settlement plot also includes a secondar X-axis which shows the location of the actual measurement points.

    The Plot > Plot Nozzle option in the local graphics environment constructs the nozzle plot diagrams of !"#-$%& !ppendix "' necessarto determine if a nozzle is overloaded.
