Exploring the World of Books
Books open the door to a new
world for children. One day, they
could be king of the jungle and
the next day they might be
climbing a giant beanstalk.
Create a setting for children to
explore books with these three
ideas for reading corners.

Wild About My Reading Corner - Essentials
Theme No. 1: Jungle
Inspiration: “Where the Wild
Things Are” by Maurice Sendak
Essentials:
• Roll of brown craft paper
• Green construction paper
• Clear painter’s tape
• Faux animal print rug & pillows
• Giraffe, elephant and lion stuffed
toy animals
Home Office: White Plains, NY
Wild About My Reading Corner - Instructions
Using brown craft paper, cut out a tree trunk with thick branches. Tape it to the
wall with clear painter’s tape (to avoid peeling the paint off of the wall). Next, cut
over-sized leaves and tape them to the branches.
Finally, cut three long sheets of brown craft paper and twist them into vine
shapes. Drape the vines from the ceiling, fastening each point in place with tape.
Set out the animal print rug, pillows and stuffed animals and you’ve got yourself a
reading corner fit for a jungle king (or queen)!

Out of this World Reading Corner - Essentials
Theme No. 2: Outer Space
Inspiration: “The Magic School
Bus Lost in the Solar System,” by
Joanna Cole
Essentials:
• Hang-up solar system
• Space shuttle wall decals
• Bean bag
Home Office: White Plains, NY
Out of this World Reading Corner - Instructions
Purchase a glow-in-the-dark solar system kit and expose each planet to light.
Secure each hanger to the ceiling, allowing the planets to hang from the clear
line fastened to them. Stick the space shuttle decals to the wall behind the
planets. Set up the beanbag against the wall.
Warning: After exposing your child to this new atmosphere, you may have
trouble bringing him or her back to Earth for dinner.

Under the Sea Reading Corner - Essentials
Theme No. 3: Below Sea Level
Inspiration: “1001 Things to Spot
in the Sea,” by Katie Daynes
Essentials:
• Under the Sea Canopy Tent
• Submarine and marine life wall
decals
• Blue, yellow and red pool noodles
• Colorful bath loofah
• Packing paper
Home Office: White Plains, NY
Under the Sea Reading Corner - Instructions
Consider purchasing an inexpensive
children’s blue canopy or sea-themed
canopy. Follow the canopy’s installation
instructions to hang it from the ceiling.
Off to the side, crumple up packing
paper to create a pile of sand. Then,
cut the pool noodles in thirds, gluing
one end of each piece to the “sand.”
Finally, glue the loofah to the sand and
you’ve got yourself a colorful coral reef.
Your child will love diving into his or her
favorite book in this sea-themed
reading corner.
