Bugs Blitz at the Hill Year Prep to 8 students from Pyramid Hill College and St Pat’s were very lucky last Thursday with the beautiful weather and the opportunity to head to the Hill for a day with the Bugs Blitz team. This is the fifth year we have been fortunate enough to participate in environmental activities and enjoy these days and this time was no different. We had Deidre and Mrs Rogers (our bird lady), scouring the Hill with binoculars for birds of prey and listening for their sounds. Erin showed us what to look for in the water, catching a variety of macro organisms, which are bugs and fish that live in the water. The students were able
to look at them under the microscope which showed that some creatures are very scary close up. Thank-fully, nobody fell in or even got wet, which was a miracle watching some of the younger students swinging the long handled water catchers around. Pollyanna was the photographer, who is going to put “The Big Picture” together. What is this you may ask? Exactly that, a big picture is being created, with every student who was at Bugs Blitz and our Year 9 and 10 students, each holding a message with an up lifting quote, something to do with our school values or a word about our school. The photos will be put together on a large board 8 metres by 1.5 metres and displayed on a wall at the school. We will have an unveiling ceremony when it arrives.
We also played old fashioned games of horseshoes and real knuckles, which many students had never played. Lastly it was catching bugs with John, always our favorite. This year he bought along his pet huntsmen spider, which some brave people were happy to hold, although I haven’t seen Wendy Bolch move so fast as she did when the spider came out. The students found a lot of different types of spiders and beetles this year, with John explaining their names. Students also learnt that ants don’t taste like vegemite, as they found out when they tried them.
The presenters were very impressed with our students’ enthusiasm, cooperation, knowledge, manners and they loved the fact that the older kids cooperated, helping the younger ones, so give yourselves a pat on the back.
Well done to the Shire workers
who had our Hill and the
facilities looking fantastic. A
big thank you to John and his
team, and the staff and students
from both schools for a great
day.

Not much happening because of the cold weather, but activities (Card Bingo, Movie Days etc.) still going on. A very cold day on 1st August. Movie Day was not as well attended as usual, but was enjoyed by those who did attend, followed by a nice afternoon tea. Friday 7th, saw seven at card Bingo, with Lorna Forster winning 7 games and lucky card and lucky door as well. Well done Lorna. Bill Sheppard won 4 games and two lucky cards. Friday is our AGM, straight after our monthly luncheon (including yummy bread & butter pudding for sweets) - $10, hope to see you there. Happy Birthday to anyone having one.

Give the Gift of Reading with
The Reading Hour
The Reading Hour is coming up with the simple message: ‘Share a book for 10 minutes a day, an hour a week, and give the gift of reading’. Hundreds of Reading Hour celebrations will take place during August in libraries, schools, businesses and homes across the country! To celebrate The Reading Hour, Goldfields Libraries will have special Family Book Bundles available for the week of Monday 15 – Saturday 20 August. Designed for ages 0-7, the Book Bundles are free, and enable families to share a love of reading together. Older children and adults are encouraged to borrow books from the library or eLibrary, with over 300,000 items to choose from. Membership is free, and items can be reserved online via www.ncgrl.vic.gov.au
The Reading Hour emerged from the National Year of Reading 2012, and is an ongoing campaign from Love2Read, funded by the ALIA Australian Public Library Alliance and in partnership with the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund. Respond-ing to research highlighting Australia’s critically low literacy rates and the increased social and economic opportunities for children that are read to from an early age, The Reading Hour initiative reminds parents, caregivers and families that reading together doesn’t have to be a massive undertaking in their increasingly busy lives. Rather, it encourages the ‘anytime, anywhere’ mantra, building a foundation in society whereby reading is a gift, given freely.
Although the official Reading Hour is held nationwide on Tuesday 16 August, the joy of reading can be celebrated anytime, anywhere. Anytime is reading time! Driven by Australian libraries, Love2Read raises the status and visibility of reading and literacy nationwide, promotes the benefits of reading and storytelling as critical life skills and catalysts for wellbe-ing, and unifies the national literacy network working toward Australia becoming a nation of readers.

Pyramid Hill Netball Round 17 - August 6
Mitiamo v Pyramid
A GRADE
Warmer conditions saw both teams come out firing with Mitiamo having a 6 goal lead at quarter time. The 2nd had the Pyramid girls fighting hard at the start gaining a number of turnovers but fell away again giving Miti a 16 goal lead at half time. Mitiamo proved to be too strong for Pyramid running away with a strong lead at full time. Mitiamo 68 d. Pyramid Hill 28 Best – Hayley Hipwell
B GRADE
With the sun shining the girls started off strong. Pyramid defence held their own in the first half however the Mitiamo shooters hardly missed. The second half saw the girls still fighting hard to keep up with the pace and accuracy of the Mitiamo team. Unfortunately the Pyramid girls couldn’t get the win against a strong Mitiamo, but a great effort. Mitiamo 46 d. Pyramid Hill 32

It was another lovely day for netball up at the Hill. Unfortunately the girls weren’t able to pull it together against a very strong Mitiamo side. With a side made up of both C and C Reserve players we weren’t able to keep up with the fast paced opposition. Keep our heads up girls – it was a great effort – let’s bring it together for one last game at Calivil next week. Mitiamo 63 d. Pyramid Hill 17
Best – Bec Nunn
C RESERVE
No game.
17 & UNDER
Our girls took to the court eager for their first win, knowing that is was a possibility. Playing through the first quarter with a few bad passes saw Mitiamo get a few goals ahead, but still in reach we were fired up for the second and third quarter. With our defensive end putting heaps of pressure on their attackers we manage to hold off a little longer but soon lost our place letting Mitiamo take over and get the win. Mitiamo 48 d. Pyramid Hill 20
Best – Julia Fernandez
15 & UNDER
We took the court in high spirits with 2 of our Minis playing due to injuries. We were down in the first quarter by 6 goals with our defence playing strong. We changed players around in the next couple of quarters but unfortu-nately were just unable to pull back the lead of Mitiamo. Mitiamo 29 d. Pyramid Hill 21 Best – Ally Burke
MINIS
It was a tightly contested game against Mitiamo, but the whole team played well together. First rate passing and positioning! Charlie Moon made an impressive debut in wing attack whilst illness had reduced the team numbers. Erin managed quite a few goals even after her big day of flower girl duties! Great game girls.
Best – Sammi Moon & Imogen Broad

Pyramid Hill Footy Results Pyramid Hill v Mitiamo
We only had a week to bask in our glory of three out three wins; as this week the results were of stark contrast. The Ressies boys were severely undermanned and a big thank you to all our Under 18’s who filled in. The Senior game was a spectators delight as a great display of skill, competitiveness and good sportsmanship was played out by both the Pyramid and Miti teams. The game was still there to be taken until the final 10 minutes; when Mitiamo lifted and ran out 25 point winners.
Reserves
A tough day at the office this time around after a big win last week. The Superoos started well but our boys had a good quarter. Nato Moon was pivotal in the ruck giving Robert ‘The General’ Pickles, Kiel Kerrison and Troy ‘The Package’ Woolhouse first use of the ball. We just could not get on the scoreboard. At quarter time the boys were flat, so back to basics it was. Limiting the score of Mitiamo was the aim and Brad Peters played outstanding-ly to keep us almost in the match. The last quarter saw a blow out and Mitiamo were just too strong for our side which were totally depleted after a few injuries. We look forward to the last round of the year. ‘Woof, woof’. It’s never an easy job to fill, so thanks Grant, a job well done! Another round of applause to our social committee, who put on a ripper of a Trivia night. Surprise of the night was The ‘Mulldragons’ coming home in first place. Thanks to Fitzy for his MC duties! Thanks to all who attended and made it a fun, family night. Remember to pencil in Vote Count/Presentation Day on Saturday 17th September. Starts at 4pm with the Auskick/Net Set Go followed by Junior Grades and then Senior Grades. All families to bring a salad please.
This week sees the last match of the
round against our Calivil neighbours.
For Seniors it do or die, and for our 18’s
it will determine whether they get a
second chance in the finals series. So
let’s give it everything this week.

Out with the old, in with the new
After many decades of service, the old oven at Mitchell park has gone into
retirement. Mitchell park and the PHFNC catering

Further thanks must be extended to the people who donated items for the raffle, including local businesses the PH Butchery, Coffee Bank and PH Post Office. At the end of three games of twelve ends the winners were Bob Maud’s team from Cohuna. They were the only three game winner and were delighted to take home their succulent-looking pork roasts. Runners up were the Gunbower/ Pyramid combined team comprised of Marg and Graeme L’Huillier and Alan Jobling. There were a number of contenders for second position with a few teams wining two games and losing one, so the point system and was brought into account. A very close third was the Pyramid Hill/ Calivil combined team of Allan Fidler, Andy Nikkelson and John Pickles. They were presented with the “Silly Sausage Award” being unlucky to ‘hit a snag’ – so to speak- and just miss out on the meat pack after calculating points for and against. Congratulations to Allan who took on the bulk of the organisation in the absence of Lionel who is busy sunning himself in Bateman’s Bay with his beautiful bride. The tournament was a great way to get the enthusiasm juices flowing. The greens will be kept in order for practice now leading up to the opening of Pennant, so members can feel free to limber up any time. A reminder that fees are now due and can be paid to Lionel or Marie N.

Tournament Report
What a great way to kick start the Bowling Season!! Under near perfect conditions, blue skies, sunshine and just a gentle breeze, fourteen teams took to the greens to vie for the points to win some magnificently presented trays of meat donated so generously by our local butcher, Paul Walters. A huge thanks to Paul for his sponsorship! Congratulations to our Green Keepers! With all the rain that has been falling over the previous weeks, it was a challenge to get them dry enough to work on – that’s a surprising change! The greens were beautifully presented and running quite well. Well done to Al & Andy who put in a lot of effort! Thanks to Ian for mowing the surrounds and to Graham for marking the lines. The day’s events were punctuated with a fine meal of yummy, piping hot soup, fresh sandwiches and topped off with home-made sausage rolls. Thanks to the catering committee on their preparation and presentation, and thanks to the ladies who came along to work in the kitchen and the bar. Every bit of effort is truly appreciated and it all adds to the successful running of the day.
