The Type 35 made its debut at the 1924 French Grand Prix at Lyon and embodied all of Ettore Bugatti’s experience, talent and sense of aesthetic beauty. With its sleek streamlined body and trademark horseshoe radiator, it is one of the iconic designs of the 20th century. The Type 35’s beauty was matched by its performance. With its debut at Lyon marred by a defective batch of tyres the Type 35 soon realised its potential at the San Sebastian Grand Prix later in the season. In its second season the Type 35 really started to show its true form.
Until early 1926 the Type 35 had only been run either as a 2-litre or 2-litre Supercharged (35C). In early 1926 in preparation for the Targa Florio, Bugatti lengthened the stroke of its 2-litre engine to 2.3-litre to produce the 35T. Not long after this a 2.3-litre engine was supercharged and this was to become the start of the 35 in its ultimate format the Type 35TC, more commonly known as the 35B.

In 1928 the 1 1/2 litre Grand Prix formula was abandoned and it was from this point on that the potent and delicately handling Type 35B was to come into its own and consolidate Bugatti’s reputation for years to come. The Bugatti Type 35 in different guises became a dominant force winning countless Grand Prix and sports car races in the late 20’s and early 30’s in the hands of Works drivers and amateurs alike. Convincingly winning the Targa Florio in 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928 and 1929; the French Grand Prix every year from 1926 to 1930 and what has to be one of the most significant victories in motor racing history when William Grover-Williams won the inaugural Monaco Grand Prix in 1929. So successful was the Type 35 that out of 23 cars on the grid for the 1930 Monaco Grand Prix 14 of them were Bugattis. Type 35B’s are still raced hard to this day at some of the most prestigious circuits around the world including competing for the same cup that Williams won all those years ago.
This stunning example has been beautifully rebuilt using all major original components, by regarded marque specialists Ivan Dutton Ltd. The original chassis rails have been independently age tested using Spectrometer Chemical Analysis under the guidance of Mark Morris of the Bugati Owners Club. On the strength of the results the Bugatti Owners Club have confirmed in that this chassis frame is accepted as a restored original frame.

The engine has been completely rebuilt using an original numbered Type 38 lower crank case and Type 35 upper crank case, a new Brineton Engineering roller-bearing crankshaft, original cam box and super charger centre casing. The front axle and numbered gear box casing are original Molshiem components as is the numbered back axle casing. Other original components from the rebuilt radiator, steering box, through other finer details are a culmination of years of collecting. A great deal of time effort and money has gone into the restoration of the complete car. The attention to details and sympathetic presentation of the car is impressive. As for driving, that speaks for itself. With its straight through un-silenced exhaust pipes it sounds fantastic and is fast and exciting to drive.
