and jewelry designer, and his wife Teresa Lorioli. His younger brother wasa renowned animal sculptor,Rembrandt Bugatti(18841916); his aunt,Luigia Bugatti, was the wife of the painterGiovanni Segantini; and hispaternal grandfather,Giovanni Luigi Bugatti, was an architect and sculptor.

Before founding hisBugattiautomobile company, Ettore designed anumber of engines and vehicles for others.Prinetti & Stucchiproduced his1898Type 1. From 1902 through 1904,Dietrichbuilt hisType 3/4andType5/6/7with theDietrich-Bugattimarque. In 1907, Bugatti became employedwith theDeutz Gasmotoren Fabrik, designing theType 8/9.

On his own time, Bugatti developed theType 2(in 1900 and 1901), and the1903Type 5. While at Deutz, Bugatti built hisType 10in the basement ofhis home. In 1913, Bugatti designed a small car forPeugeot, theType

    19 Bb.

Although he was born in Italy, Bugatti established his eponymousautomobile company atMolsheimin theAlsaceregion. The company wasknown for the advanced engineering of its premium road cars and itssuccess in earlyGrand Prix motor racing, a Bugatti winning the firstMonacoGrand Prix.

While displaced from his home in Alsace by World War I, Bugatti designedaeroplane engines, notably the somewhat baroque 16-cylinderU-16whichwas never built in any large number and only installed in some very fewaircraft.[1][2]Between the wars Ettore Bugatti also designed a successfulmotorized railcar, the Autorail, and an airplane, theModel 100, though thiswas never flown. His son,Jean Bugatti, was killed on 11 August 1939 atthe age of 30 years, while testing aBugatti Type 57 tank-bodied racecarnear theMolsheimfactory. After that, the company's fortunes began todecline. World War II ruined the factory in Molsheim, and the company lostcontrol of the property. During the war, Bugatti planned a new factory at

Levallois inParisand designed a series of new cars.To modern sensibilities, Bugatti's concept of customer relations wassomewhat eccentric. To a Bugatti owner who complained that his car wasdifficult to start on cold mornings, he is said to have retorted, "Sir! If you canafford a Type 35, you can surely afford a heated garage!" [3]

HISTORYFrom 11th to 18th October 2005, the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was

presented in Madonie in Sicily, an area known throughout the world as

the setting for one of the most illustrious motor races, the Targa Florio.

For the first time, on the roads of the legendary course and on the

Autodromo di Pergusa in Enna, a wider group of media professionals

were able to convince themselves of the qualities of this new super

sports car. As Dr. Thomas Bscher, President of Bugatti Automobiles

S.A.S., explained: 'It is no accident that Bugatti is presenting the new

Veyron here in Sicily. Since the acquisition of the rights to the name in

1998, we have not only built a new car, but have also breathed new life

into one of the world's most prestigious automobile marques. And it

was on the course of the Targa Florio in the 1920s, wth its Type 35

Grand Prix racers a model that made a vital contribution to the

renown of the marque that Bugatti achieved its most famous

victories. Here in Castelbuono I can state clearly and this is a source of

pride for us all the Bugatti marque is alive and the new Bugatti Veyron

    16.4 will ensure its future!'

Another car, 50 years down the road

In 1956, the final attempts had failed, in the wake of the death of the

company's founder in 1947 preceded in death in 1939 by his son Jean,

    wth whom he collaborated

to keep the substantially weakenedcompany alive. After 47 years' production, in the course of which 7,950

Bugattis of models 13 through 251 had been manufactured, the gates

to the Bugatti factory in Molsheim were forced to close. Today, nearly

Bugatti world. As a centre for reminiscence, picturesque town near

Strasbourg has never lost its significance. The area's 'Enthusiasts

Bugatti Alsace', together wth their friends in the various Bugatti clubs

throughout the entire world, are in large measure responsible for

keeping the brand alive over the decades

even in the absence of the

product itself. This is an experience in which various other prestigious

automobile brands wth melodious names have not shared. It is in this

fact that the strength of the Bugatti brand values is expressed most

clearly. The admiration for 'art on wheels', the bold pursuit of the

aesthetic conviction of Ettore Bugatti, a man who was first and

foremost an artist, not a technician. The grandeur of the victories in

the glorious years of dirt-encrusted heroes on the racetracks of this

world and, not least, the suitability of these racing cars for everyday

driving which made Bugatti cars accessible to a broader clientele. The

prestige of inspired design and the exclusiveness of individual models

that helped catapult certain Bugatti models into the astronomical price

    classes.

1998 through 1999: Four design studies in 15 months time

In April 1998, the Volkswagen Group took over the Bugatti trademark,

presenting the brand to the public for the first time at the International

Motor Show in Paris wth a study for a two-door coup it had

commissioned Italdesign to create: the Bugatti EB 118. A few months

later, in March 1999, at the Geneva Motor Show, a design of the EB

218, itself also created at Italdesign, caused a sensation wth a four-

door saloon using the same 18-cylinder, 6.3 litre engine wth 555 hp.

This was followed the same year, at the IAA in Frankfurt, by the centre-engine design, the Bugatti EB 18/3 Chiron; once again Giugiaro was

responsible for the design. And shortly thereafter, in Tokyo, the Bugatti

EB 18/4 Veyron celebrated its world premiere, a model designed at the

'Volkswagen Centre of Excellence Design' under the directorship of

Hartmut Warkuss. Less than a year later, in autumn 2000 in Paris, the

    Super Sport edition

The Veyron Super Sport features an engine power increase fromthe standard 1,001 metric horsepower (736 kW; 987 bhp) to 1,200metric horsepower (883 kW; 1,184 bhp) and torque of 1,500 Nm(1,100 ftlbf) and a revised aerodynamic package.[4]It was shownpublicly for the first time at thePebble Beach Concoursd'Elegancein August 2010.[3]

Bugatti's official test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel drove the SuperSport version of the Veyron on Volkswagen'sEhra-Lessien high-speed oval to establish the car's top speed. With representativesof theGuinness Book of Recordsand German TechnicalInspection Agency (TV) on hand, Raphanel made passesaround the big oval in both directions achieving an averagemaximum speed of 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph).[15]Onceproduced for sale, the first five Super Sports will sport the sameblack and orange finish as the first production car, which wasused to set the speed record, and all production models will beelectronically limited to 415 km/h (258 mph) to protect the tyres.[4]

    Top speed

German inspection officials recorded an average top speed of theoriginal version of 408.47 km/h (253.81 mph)[5]during testsessions on theEhra-Lessientest track on 19 April 2005.

This top speed was verified byJames MayonTop Gearin

May noted that at top speed the engineconsumes 45,000 litres (9,900 imp gal) of air per minute (as muchas a human breathes in four days). The Veyron has the highesttop speed of any street legal production car. Once back in the TopGearstudio, James was asked by co-presenterJeremy

On 4 July 2010, Bugatti's official test driverPierre HenriRaphanelpiloted the Super Sport edition and was clocked at anaverage of 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph) on the same track, taking back the title from theSSC Ultimate Aero TTas the fastestproduction vehicle of all time. The 431.072 km/h mark wasreached by averaging the Super Sport's two test runs, the firstreaching 427.93 km/h (265.90 mph) and the second 434.20 km/h(269.80 mph). The record run was certified by the German

government and theGuinness Book of World Records.[17]The car's everyday top speed is listed at 350 km/h (220 mph). When the car reaches 220 km/h (140 mph), hydraulics lower thecar until it has a ground clearance of about 9 cm (3.5 in). At thesame time, the wing and spoiler deploy. In this handling modethewing provides 3,425 newtons (770 lbf) of downforce, holding thecar to the road.[11]

For top speed modethe driver must, while at rest, toggle a specialtop speed key to the left of the driver's seat. A checklist thenestablishes whether the car and its driver are ready to attempt toreach 407 km/h (253 mph). If so, the rear spoiler retracts, the frontair diffusers shut, and normal 12.5 cm (4.9 in) ground clearancedrops to 6.5 cm (2.6 in).

deceleration of 1.3g'son road tyres. As an added safety feature,in the event of brake failure, ananti-lock braking system(ABS)has also been installed on the handbrake.

Prototypes have been subjected to repeated 1.0 g braking from312 km/h (194 mph) to 80 km/h (50 mph) without fade. With thecar's acceleration from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 312 km/h (194 mph),that test can be performed every 22 seconds. At speeds above200 km/h (120 mph), the rear wing also acts as an airbrake, snapping to a 55 angle in 0.4 seconds once brakes are applied, providing an additional 0.68 g (6.66 m/s2) of deceleration(equivalent to the stopping power of an ordinaryhatchback).[11]Bugatti claims the Veyron will brake from 400 km/h

(250 mph) to a standstill in less than 10 seconds, though distancecovered in this time will be half of a kilometer (third of a mile).[11]

    STRUCTURE

A super sports car like the Veyron 16.4*) needs to be

light in order to reach top speeds. From the initial concept to the design and the selection ofmaterials, the Bugatti engineers tapped the full potential oftheir considerable expertise to ensure that this car is,indeed, a lightweight. Titanium, carbon, magnesium, andaluminum each part of the Veyron 16.4 is made of thematerial with the lowest weight and the highest level of

functionality. The titanium piston rods save approx. 4 kg ofweight, the titanium screws 3.5 kg, and the magnesiumvalve caps another 2 kg. By reducing the wheelbase, theoriginal weight was reduced by about a third, and thetitanium exhaust system another Veyron 16.4 first withits wafer-thin layer of titanium aluminite saves yet another

17 kg. These combined efforts capped the Veyron 16.4sweight at a compact 1,888 kg. Add the cars high-poweredperformance and unmatched speed, and you have a

uniquely fast and nimble super sports car.Optimum protection is guaranteed by the cars carbonmonocoque construction: weighing only 110 kg, thesurvival cell withstands enormous crash impact forces. This principle is comparable to that used in the Formula 1world, where drivers usually emerge uninjured from theircars even after severe accidents. The maximum impactforce reduction is mainly due to the frames integrated in

the carbon monocoque. The front part of the monocoqueis made of aluminum; the rear consists of a combination ofcarbon, stainless steel, and aluminum. The cars safetyconcept, which includes two frontal airbags for the front-seat occupants, is so sophisticated that additional airbagswould be redundant. Crash tests have shown the Veyron16.4 to conform to all international safety standards and

to exceed them. As painful as it was for the engineers towatch their valuable prototypes hit the test wall, they werealways glad to see that the Veyron survived thesemaneuvers almost unharmed.

The Veyrons*) central nervous system consists ofthree data busesone for the driveline, one for the convenience functions,

and one for the internal diagnostics system. A total of 26control devices is connected to these buses. This digitalnetwork comprises the cars complete intelligence system:from engine regulation to electric windows; from rearspoiler control to GPS. In place of a traditional network,Bugatti equipped the Veyron with a lightweight onboardnetwork also used in aviation technology. This saves 5 kgof weight and also offers extreme temperature resistance.

The hub of this network is the telemetry computer. Itconstantly collects all vehicle data, checks them forreliability, and monitors battery voltage. As soon as thevalues become critical, the computer automaticallytransmits an error report to Bugatti from anywhere in theworld. Whenever theres the possibility of a malfunction, there is also perfect service available. Customers may of

course deactivate this option, but they can also intensifythe service level: the Veyrons GPS data are alwaysaccessible in case the car should go missing. In addition, the Veyron features speech-controlled, hands-free mobilephone operation with integrated Bluetooth technology. TheBluetooth GPS is controlled via an exclusive Bugatti PDA.Both systems use the Burmester sound system for crystal-clear audio output. All visual data are displayed on therearview mirror a feat made possible by the extremelybright LED display placed behind the semi-transparentmirror glass. The PDA boasts additional useful features:drivers can use it to access lap times, tire pressure, gasconsumption, and key telemetry data.

beginning in spring 2009. The model has extensivereinforcements to compensate for the lack of standardroof,[34]and small changes to the windshield and running

lights. There are two removable tops, the second atemporary roof fashioned after an umbrella. The top speedwith the hardtop in place is the same as the standardcoup version, but with the roof down is limited to369 km/h (229 mph)and to 130 km/h (81 mph) with thetemporary soft roof. The first (chassis 001) wassold atauction, raising approximately US$900,000 for charity.[35]

Had a model been especially popular or highly successfulin races, Ettore Bugattis customers often pushed themaster to tease out of the engine a few horsepower morefor their future car. Bugatti Automobiles SAS had been in a

similar situation when their existing customers asked thecompany to not only design their second model opticallydifferently but also to create a version with a sportier andmore extreme driving experience. The result is a car with auniquely high performance of 882 kW (1.200 bhp) offeringexperienced drivers a whole new dimension of excitement, with a maximum torque of 1.500 Newton metres and alimited top speed of 415 km/h (to protect the tyres). The Super Sport*) is a consequent further development ofthe classic exclusive 736 kW (1.001 bhp) Bugatti Veyron16.4, launched in 2005. This model offers a stunning set ofspecifications, such as the twin clutch gearbox with sevenspeeds, the extraordinarily precise driving performance in

bends and excellent stability when braking andaccelerating.Continuous work in extreme performance ranges lead to

constantly new conclusions, which enabled the engineersat Bugatti to develop the Veyron into a direction in whichthe driver can reach new dimensions. Every modificationis designed to produce an even more powerful car for anagile ride. Four enlarged turbochargers and biggerintercoolers have been used to boost the power of the 16-cylinder engine, and the chassis has been extensivelyredesigned to maintain safety at extreme speed. Thanks

to slightly raised main-spring-rate, stronger stiffer Anti-Roll-bars, and new shock absorbers with a complexarchitecture originally developed for racing cars. Thisgives noticeably more precise control of the wheels andthe car as a whole. With lateral acceleration of up to 1.4 Gand improved interaction between the tyres and theintelligent all-wheel drive system, the Super Sport offers

perfect handling and even more powerful acceleration of1.500 Newton metres on corner exits. The body has been fine-tuned to improve aerodynamicefficiency and maintain perfect balance in every situation, while the new fibre structure of the all-carbon monocoqueensures maximum torsion rigidity and passive safety atreduced weight. The skin is made entirely of carbon-fibrecomposites, and the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sportis available in 100 percent clear-lacquered exposedcarbon on request.

    Criticismsand

commentsGordon Murray, designer of theMcLaren F1(which formany years was the fastest production car ever built) saidthe following about the Bugatti Veyron in UK automagazineevoduring its development period:

The most pointless exercise on the planet has got to be

    this four-wheel-drive, thousand-horsepower BugattiGordon Murray[40]

Murray later brought up and criticized Volkswagen for"scamming" car buyers in the 1990s for buying thecheapest parts possible for the production of Jettas andGolfs, allowing Volkswagen to make a larger profit off theircar sales, funding the construction of the Bugatti Veyron.

However, Murray was impressed with the Veyron's engineand transmission after he test drove one forRoad andTrackmagazine.[41]

    [edit]Top Gear

The Veyron has received considerable praise from allthree presenters of the popular BBC motoring showTop

Gear. While initially skeptical that it would ever beproduced,Jeremy Clarksonlater declared the Veyron "thegreatest car ever made and the greatest car we will eversee in our lifetime." James Maydescribed the Veyron as"our Concordemoment." Clarkson test drove the Veyronfrom Alba, northern Italy to London in a race againstJames May andRichard Hammondwho made the journeyin aCessna 182aeroplane.

A few episodes later, James May drove the Veyron at theVW test track and took it to its top speed of 407.16 km/h(253.00 mph). During the second episode of the 13thseries, Richard Hammond raced the Veyron againsttheMcLaren F1driven byThe Stigin a one mile (1.6 km)drag race inAbu Dhabi, commenting on Bugatti's"amazing technical achievement" versus the "non gizmo"racing purity of the F1. While the F1 was quicker off theline and remained ahead until both cars were travelling atapproximately 200 km/h, the Bugatti overtook itscompetitor from 200 to 300 km/h, and emerged the victor.Hammond has stated that he did not use theVeyron's launch controlin order to make the race moreinteresting.

The Veyron also won the award for Car of the DecadeinTop Gear's end of 2010 award show. Clarksoncommented "It was a car that just rewrote the rule bookreally, an amazing piece of engineering, a genuineConcorde moment". When the standard version was

tested, it did not reach the top of the lap time leader board, which was speculated as being due to the car'sconsiderable weight disadvantage against the other cars

towards the top. The SuperSport version, however, achieved the fastest ever time of 1:16.8 (later beaten bytheAriel Atom V8, theMcLaren MP4-12CandtheLamborghini Aventador[42]), as well as being taken to a(verified) average top speed of 431.072 km/h(267.856 mph) by Raphanel on theprogramme,[43]thenceforth retaking its position asthefastest production car in the world.[44][45][46]

In 2011, Bugatti Veyron: A Quest for Perfection - TheStory of the Greatest Car in the World[47]was publishedwhich took the stance that the car had now become sofamous that it was effectively a bona fide 'celebrity'. Thebook follows its author Martin Roach as he attempts totrack down and drive the car, along the way interviewingchief designers, test drivers, and the president of Bugatti.
