    Chapter Twelve

    August 9th, 1998

    Boca Del Infierno(Sunnydale)

Dark brown eyes fluttered open, squinting, unsure; they flitted back and forth, cautiouslytaking in the surroundings. When they saw something other than the rock walls of a cave --indeed, when they saw sunlight streaming through a window-- they opened fully.

Im in bed, Cordelia realized.Im home.Xander, she croaked weakly.Honey, her father said. Im right here.Daddy? Cordelia managed, frowning.I sound like a frog...Sweetheart, he said, taking her hand.Call Xander.Mr. Chase furrowed his brows. Are you all right? he asked.Cordelia managed a wan smile. Daddy, Im fine. Could you please call Xander?Mr. Chase raised an eyebrow. Relax, honey. I want to be sure youre all right. You were

gone all night, and that kidnapping...Daddy, he saved my life. Call him.Mr. Chase brushed his daughters hair out of her face. Hold on, sweetie. He stood and

walked to the doorway. Honey? Shes awake. He paused, looking back at Cordelia, andsmiled. Send the boy up.

Hes here? Cordelia asked.Mr. Chase laughed. He wouldnt leave. I offered to drive him home, but he wouldnt

hear of it. He was sitting here with you until about an hour ago, when he fell asleep. I told yourmother--

Xander burst through the door. Cordy?Cordelia smiled. Xander. For just a moment, Xander forgot Mr. Chase stood there. The young man moved to the

bed and embraced Cordelia, holding her to him, gently wrapping his arms around her. Cordeliaburied her head in his neck, kissing him softly as she slid her arms around him.

Ill leave you two kids alone for a few, Mr. Chase said as he left the room and closedthe door behind him.

Cordelia and Xander held each other for a long while, neither speaking, just embracingone another. After a while Cordelia nuzzled his neck again and pulled away.

Are you okay? she asked.Never better, Xander smiled. Cordelia returned his smile. He looks like hell-- his hairs

a mess, there are bags under his eyes, he hasnt shaven... and hes the most beautiful thing Iveever seen. She kissed him again.

How are you holdin up? Xander asked. I mean, these were pretty scary guys whokidnapped you, even for vampires. Did they...?

They chased me around a lot and hit me a few times. They seemed really hot to get meto kill one of them. Im not even gonna pretend I understand that.

Xander stroked her cheek. Im just glad we got to you before... he lapsed, kissing her.

Before what?Xander shook his head. You dont know? They didnt tell you?Cordelia frowned. They said I had to pass some kinda test. They didnt say what or why.

I got the hint that part of the test was killing a vampire, but they didnt explain anything. Just setme loose and said, Dont die! Duh, like I have to be told that.

Xander took her hand. Cordy, they were gonna...She interrupted, Is this gonna be gross? On a scale of one to ten, ten being gross-out city, this is about an eight.Cordelia furrowed her brows. Okay, I can take it. Spill. They were gonna impregnate you. What?? Cordelia shrieked. They were gonna plant some kinda demon seed inside you, and...Xander, Cordelia squirmed. I dont believe you.Excuse much? Xander asked. Like I would make something this icky up?No, I believe that those creepo vampires would...yiecch... Cordelia made a face as if

shed just bitten into a lemon. But I cant believe you think that only rates an eight. On a scaleof one to ten, a vampire...yiecch... she made another lemon-face, with me, is definitely grosser

than an eight. Try like a twelve.Xander brushed a strand of hair out of her face. I think the idea of anybody yiecching

with you is about a twelve, he said softly.Even you? she asked him.No, not me, he replied quickly. Nothing remotely yiecchy about that at all.She kissed him again, pulling him to her. Xander wrapped his arms around her, holding

her close; Cordelia kissed him deeply, her tongue pressing up against his. She ran her handsthrough his hair, and Xander slid an arm down her back, pulling her torso close to him. Shestarted to push him down toward the bed when the door opened and her parents walked in.

Cordelia! her mother exclaimed.Cordelia and Xander disengaged as quickly as they could; one of the buttons on her

pajama top caught on the pocket of his shirt, and though their bodies sat apart, the clothes stayedlinked together. Embarrassed, Cordelia slid the button away from the pocket. Xander blushedfuriously.

Xander, Cordelias father said, I think youd better be going.Xander nodded and stood up. Good idea, Mr. Chase. He turned to Cordelia and

mouthed Call me! She nodded, and Xander slithered by the Chases and bolted out the door.Daddy, mom, Cordelia said. Dont be too hard on him. He saved my life. And that is the only reason well forgive this, her mother said. I know how grateful

you feel toward him.Cordelia nodded.Really, honey, her father intoned, does saving your life entitle him to, ummm...Cordelia smiled. I wasnt kissing him because he saved my life, she told them.

Though I do owe him for that. Her father folded his arms.Daddy, Cordelia looked up at him with big round eyes. I love him.Her father shook his head, and her mother closed her eyes and leaned her head on her

fathers shoulder. You love him because he saved your life? Mr. Chase asked, his voice rising in tone.Oh no, Cordelia replied, I was in love with him before he did that. But wasnt saving

my life like the most romantic thing he could ever do?

Mrs. Chase sighed, threw up her hands, and left the room. Mr. Chase tried to glare atCordelia, but his stern visage crumbled into a smile.

You are so much like your mother, he said. He exhaled. Just dont do anything youllregret, dear.

I try not to regret anything I do, Cordelia answered him.The smile on his face melted back into a glare.Ooops, that didnt come out right.

*Just a minute! Oz called out, pushing himself up off the couch. He snatched the cane

that stood propped against the end table and waddled to the door. Will, he said, smiling, as he opened the door. Come on in.I didnt mean to make you get up, she said.Oz shrugged. I hadda get up anyway. I had to answer the door.Willow smiled. You could leave it open, she told him.

No, he said. Who knows who I might have invited in when I was a werewolf?I didnt know you could talk when you were a werewolf, Willow said.I dont know if I can either. Maybe I cant. But I dont want to be lying on the couch

with a bad ankle when some demon comes strolling through the door. Thatd just be a badsituation, you know?

Willow frowned slightly. We could do a ritual, a blessing, to banish all monsters fromyour home, she suggested. Like we did with Buffys house when Angel went bad.

Oz shook his head. What if that includes me? he asked. My moms pretty laid back, but I dont think shed be too hip with finding me curled up naked on the front porch in themorning, you know?

Willow grinned. Sounds pretty tasty to me, she spoke.Oz raised an eyebrow. Im gettin the feeling that Im not the only one with a little wolf

in his blood.Willow smiled and kissed him. Lets sit down. I dont want you up on that ankle too

long.Doctor said its only a sprain, Oz told her.Willow scowled and pointed at the couch.Yes, maam, Oz said, moving back to the couch and sitting down. Willow sat next to

him and kissed him on the cheek.Somebodys affectionate today, Oz kidded her. Not that that should be taken as a

complaint or anything.Well, Willow began, everything worked out last night. And I know that Khraftstar and

that creepy Melanie are still around, and I know were not done with all this, but just for once I

feel like celebrating. We saved Cordelia, and we stopped that whole baby thing. The two of them shuddered. So, did you kill any vampires? Oz asked.Me? Willow asked. I stayed by the cars. Buffy said it would be safer if we had

someone waiting in case we had to leave in a hurry.Good, Oz said.Willow pouted. Why is that good? Why is me not helping out good?

Just because you didnt fight doesnt mean you didnt help out, Oz said, taking herhand. I dont want you getting into fights when Im not there to look out for you.

Buffy looks out for me, Willow objected.Oz shook his head. Not like I would.Oh, Willow murmured, that isso sweet. They kissed for a long moment; when they pulled away, Oz asked, So whats our next

move?Willow blinked. Our next move?I figure, Oz told her, we got one really mean pissed off vampire goin on a rampage

because he didnt get his demon baby. Theres gotta be some blowback from that. Otherwise itstoo easy.

Willow furrowed her brow. I dont know if Cordelia would agree that it was all thateasy.

Oz nodded. Thats likely. He scratched his chin. But this Khraftstar guy, hes beenalive, like, thousands of years, right? He probably throws a mean temper tantrum when hedoesnt get what he wants. Any idea how Buffys gonna handle that?

    Willow shook her head. Nope.

Oz frowned. Youre saying they have no idea?Willow nodded again. No. Im sayingIhave no idea.Oz raised both eyebrows. Thats not like you.Willow shrugged. I was more worried about you than about the battle plan.Oz smiled. That isso sweet. They kissed, holding one another tight.Do me a favor, Oz murmured.Hmmm?Keep it that way, he told her. What?Let the pros handle this guy, Will. I got a bad feeling about him.Willow pulled back. You think Buffys in trouble?Buffys always in trouble, Oz responded. Thats her deal. Thats bein the Slayer.Willow tilted her head. Thats not what I mean.Oz spoke, I know. But I just wanna make sureyoure not in trouble.Willow kissed him. How did you get so... so... she sighed. Sweet?Oz shrugged. It sorta comes naturally when you have the right sweetie, he said, kissing

Willow on the nose. She shook her head and pressed her lips to his, pulling him to her as she slid her arms

    around his neck.

*Melanie ducked as a ceramic bowl shattered against the wall; the fragments bouncedaway, one of them glancing off her shoulder. She risked a quick look in Raymonds direction; helifted a long iron candle-holder and bent the metal in half. He swore loudly and threw the bentbar aside as if it were made of paper. It clanged off the far wall and fell to the floor.

Meddling little bitch! he yelled, picking up a skull and dashing it against the far wall.He grabbed another. She has no idea what shes done! he screamed, throwing the skull.

No idea what she interfered with! He tossed another skull.

He turned to look at Melanie; she remained crouched behind the altar.Dahak is agod! he screamed. You do not defy a god!He slammed his hands down on the obsidian altar; Melanies eyes widened as the heavy

stone shuddered with the impact. You do not defy me! he raised his hands, clenching them into fists; Melanie peered

over the edge of the altar and saw his hands starting to dissipate into inky blackness.I will split her skull open and drink her blood and hang her lifeless body from a pole!

He shook his dissolving fists. And that idiot immortal will die this time too. No more games, nomore fencing with him. Just death! The end of a life lived too long already.

Khraftstar closed his eyes and concentrated, bringing his rage back under control. Hishands reformed, and he shook them open, flexing his fingers.

You know your part in this? he asked.Melanie nodded. He held up a single finger. You have had your one failure, Melinda. Youve served me

faithfully until now, but this is your one mistake. Make another one and youll find there areworse things to fear than the light.

She nodded in understanding, her blue eyes wide.

There will always be Slayers. Damn Zoroaster for that! But at least we can kill their allythis time. He gestured to Melanie. Once I have drunk his blood well leave this patheticcesspool and find another Hellmouth to summon Dahak through. He looked at the altar. Onethat is nowhere near any Slayers.

There are other Hellmouths? Melanie asked.Khraftstar nodded. Not many. And not as easily accessed as this one. But there are

others. He smiled. They cannot keep Dahak bound forever. He will return. This is his world--they just dont know it yet.

He gritted his teeth. Goddamned Slayer! he growled, tearing a tapestry off the wall andthrowing it across the room. Ill cut her body in half and feed her carcass to the rats! Hegrabbed a candelabra and tossed it against the far wall.

He looked around the room wildly, deciding after a moment to lift the heavy stone benchnear him. Stupid bitch! Do you think you can really stop me? Stop Dahak? He smashed thebench down on the altar; the stone seat snapped in half, but the obsidian didnt even scratch. Hewill feast on your soul for a thousand years! Khraftstar threw the half of the bench he held, shattering it against another wall. And I will feast on your body, you bitch!

Melanie slid away from him, unnoticed and unheeded, until she neared the exit. Then shebolted out the doorway and ran as quickly as she could up the stairs, stopping to listen at the top.She heard another crash and decided that discretion really was the better part of valor. Shemoved away from the stairway and headed into a study, a darkened room filled with books andmaps from all over the world.

Melanie stopped after two steps. The paint on one of the window panes had peeled awayin one corner, and a shaft of sunlight stabbed down into the room. Barely the width of a quarter,

the beam angled down sharply and illuminated a small spot on one of the plush chairs.I havent seen the sunlight in years, Melanie thought, her eyes adjusting to its brightness.

Its beautiful. She frowned as she looked at the sunlight, realizing as her eyes grew used to it that the

brightness shone not on the chair but on some bundle that had been placed atop it. Carefullyavoiding the blade of light, she slipped the cloth cover off the bundle. Her jaw dropped.

The chakram, she whispered. The nine blue stones seemed to gleam in the light.

Take me, a voice said to Melanie. What?Take me, the voice repeated. With my help you can kill him.I would never kill Raymond, Melanie said. Not Khraftstar, the voice argued. His enemy. No, Melanie said, shaking her head. I know you better. You wouldnt do that.Youd be surprised what Id do. Three thousand years is a long time to be stuck in a

disk.I dont trust you, Melanie said. You cant do it without me, and you know it.Melanie backed away and ran from the study, her heart pounding as she sprinted down

the hall, desperately wishing she could be anywhere but inside this mansion.

*Just how long did you let me sleep? Giles asked Jason, who handed him a cup of tea.

I figured it was best to let your body decide how much rest you needed. Jason blew onhis own tea to cool it. He glanced at his watch. About nine hours.

Nine hours! Giles exclaimed. He squinted at the clock. Its almost noon!Let me guess, Jason offered. You havent slept this late since college.Yes, well... Giles said. Sleeping in this late is an indulgence we can ill afford,

especially at this juncture. But having you at less than full steam isnt something we want either, Jason told Giles.

Besides, the sun is out. Were safe, for now.Giles frowned at Jason and sipped his tea. This is quite good, he said.I lived in England for over two hundred years. Id hope I picked up something.Giles nodded and sipped again. Do you let it steep longer?Jason shook his head. Put lemon in the water as it boils.Lemon? Giles asked. Really? Hmmm. He took another sip.Jason slurped some tea and asked, So what do you think his next move is?Giles replied, Youre the expert on Khraftstar, not me. He put on his glasses and spoke,

If he is anything like most vampires, hell be enraged. Immortals tend to get very upset whentheir plans are ruined. He looked over at Jason. No offense.

None taken, Jason assured him.Hell at least want to take some revenge, if he cant make another attempt at

impregnating someone.Jason nodded. He never tries twice. Whenever Khraftstars been thwarted, he leaves. Its

as if once we know what hes up to, once were aware of his plan, he abandons it. Maybe Dahakneeds to enter a host while shes ignorant of his aims. I dont know. Based on his past behavior,

he wont try to kidnap Cordelia again-- or Willow, or Joyce, or anyone else. Hell try to make uspay for what we did and hell leave town.

Giles cleared his throat. Dahak-- and by extension his followers-- seem to thrive onmisinformation and ignorance. Its as if they are stronger when their enemies are unenlightened,so to speak.

Jason considered this. Maybe they are. Dahak is also called the Lie, and Khraftstardraws much of his power from his master. Theyve been continually lying to you since they

showed up in town-- different names, false purposes, misleading us about the chakram and aboutwho they would kidnap. Jason looked at Giles. I really thought it would be Willow.

The important thing is that we rescued Cordelia. Shes far more resilient than youdthink. Shell heal on the inside as well as the outside. Giles snapped his fingers. Wait amoment-- that bit about lying...

Jason raised his eyebrows. They did that to Willow as well, with the Parsis. Giles furrowed his brow in thought.

Perhaps the darkness they serve is something more than the absence of light. Maybe its theobscuring of light-- or truth, as it were. We might be able to predict them better if we could learnto think like they do, or at least understand how they perceive things.

Jason nodded. They do like to lie.And conceal, added Giles. They seem to enjoy keeping us...In the dark, Jason finished. Exactly.Khraftstar will seek revenge, Giles said. And in doing so, he will try to misdirect us.

Hes done so all along, trying to get us to guard areas that are not important to him. The onlytime he failed to trick us was at the cemetery.

Because there was nowhere else to send you, Jason said. You knew where the

ceremony would have to take place. But we wont have that advantage with his next attack.Hell use a diversion, Giles said. Im sure of it.Jason raised an eyebrow. Its a common vampire tactic, Giles explained to Jason. They all employ it at one time

or another. With someone so used to obscuring things, its almost a given that he will try todivert us away from his real goal.

Which will be...? Jason asked.I dont know, Giles responded. Would he try to strike at Cordelia again?Jason shook his head. Its possible, but I doubt it. If he stays true to his past behavior,

hell be more angry at those who stopped him than those who escaped him. Its a good bet hellcome after me, or Buffy, rather than Cordelia. I could be wrong, but I dont think hell seehurting Cordelia as doing our side much harm. He probably wants the Slayer-- or me-- out of theway so that they next time he tries this, there wont be any interference.

The next time? Giles asked. Will that be soon?As soon as he can arrange it, Jason answered. I guess. Dahak is probably chomping at

the bit to get into our world. Hes probably pissed off that we stopped his little ritual, andscreaming at Khraftstar to find somebody else and get things moving again. But Khraftstar wonttake the chance here.

Because we know too much, Giles said. Were in the light, so to speak.Exactly.Giles drank some tea. But well still have to protect Cordelia and the others, wont we?It couldnt hurt, Jason said. Youd feel better, Id feel better, and theyd feel better.

He grunted. Too bad we dont have another Slayer.

We did, Giles said. But she was killed recently. Two Slayers? Jason asked.Giles nodded. It was rather unusual. Though I agree we could use Kendra in this

    situation.Kendra was the second Slayer?Giles nodded.But she died?Another nod.

So will there be a third Slayer?Giles adjusted his glasses. Im not entirely sure. Its never happened before.Jason rubbed his chin. Youll have to guard Cordelia and the others.Me? Giles asked. Im just a watcher.Buffy and I will have to attack Khraftstar. Itll take both of us to stop him. That leaves

you, and Xander, to watch the others. Id say Oz too, but hes hurt.Giles looked over at Jason. Youre right, of course.Jason nodded. I know. We have to cover every contingency, so that when he tries to

trick us--Well be ready, Giles said softly.Exactly, Jason agreed.

    *Buffy?

Buffy nodded. Cordelia? she asked into the phone. How are you doing?Im doing super, thanks to you guys. Xander told me everything that happened last

night.Buffy allowed herself a grin. Im glad to hear youre feeling better.Cordelia paused for a moment and said, Xander also told me what those creepoids were

gonna do with me. To me. Whatever. She took a deep breath. This goes way beyond thankyou, Buffy. I owe you guys my life.

Buffy shrugged. Youd do the same for us.Cordelia shook her head. I couldnt do the same for you. Im not the super-hero. You

are.Buffy smiled. Its all part of the job, Cordelia.

Maybe, Cordelia agreed. But you risked your life forme. You came down into thatplace where you died so that you could save me. Cordelia paused. I know that had to take a lotof guts, even for someone like you who isnt afraid of anything.

Im afraid of a lot of things, Cordelia, Buffy corrected. But not so afraid that Ill letmy friends get hurt.

Cordelia took a deep breath. Buffy, theres no way I can ever make this up to you. Iknow that. But you risked your life for me, and I want you to know that I understand what thatmeans, and that I appreciate it, a lot.

Actually, Cordelia, there is one way you can make it up to me, Buffy told her.Free makeover? Cordelia asked.Buffy closed her eyes. Shes trying, God help me, she is trying...No, Buffy said after a pause. You can promise me youll never hurt Xander again. For

some reason I dont even pretend to understand, hes fallen in love with you. So you just makesure that you never--

He told you that? Cordelia asked. Not in so many words, Buffy lied. But I know love when I see it.Wow, Cordelia said. I gotta go. Thanks again, Buffy. I really mean it.Sure, Buffy said as Cordelia hung up the phone.Honey? Joyce asked. Who was that?Cordelia, Buffy answered, lost in thought.

How is she? Joyce asked, coming over to her daughter.Shes fine, mom. Buffy shook her head. Are you?Hmm? Buffy asked.I asked if you were fine.Buffy gave her mother a tired smile. I will be, she said. Im just, you know, tired.Working hard? Joyce asked.Buffy nodded. Yah. Something like that. You sure you dont want to talk about it, honey? Joyce asked, putting her hand on

Buffys shoulder.Buffy met her mothers concerned eyes. Mom, if we talk about it, youll just get more

worried. I already give you enough gray hairs as it is just being me.Thats not true, Joyce said. Sure, I worry about you-- what mother doesnt worry

about her daughter? But its not like youre a burden to me, Buffy. I love you. I care about you,and I want to help. Buffy started to talk but Joyce held her hand up. And I know theres notmuch I can do about some of your...problems. But even if I can only listen to you talk aboutthem...maybe thats enough.

Buffy closed her eyes and embraced her mother. Mom, she whispered, resting her headon Joyces shoulder, thanks for being you.

Joyce pulled Buffy to her and held her. You too, honey. You too. They stayed that way for some time before a knock on the door startled them both.Jason, Joyce said, opening the door. Come in.He entered. Joyce, Buffy, he greeted them.Youve met my daughter? Joyce asked him.In a manner of speaking, he replied.Down, mom. Hes on our side, Buffy informed her.Hes one of you? Joyce queried, her voice rising.Mom, Im the only one of me, Buffy reminded her. But hes one of the good guys.I knew it, Joyce said.Jason raised an eyebrow. Knew what?I knew you werent an English teacher, Joyce said. That was too good to be true.Jason threw up his hands. I give up.What? Buffy asked.I used to be pretty good at disguises, Jason said. When? During the Renaissance?Joyce stared at Jason. You werent actually alive during the Renaissance, were you?Jason shrugged. Pretty much, yeah.Buffy glanced at Joyce. Mom, hes been around a long time.So why are you really here in Sunnydale? Joyce asked, but before Jason could answer

she spoke again, Never mind. Its probably more stuff that I dont want to know, right?

Jason gestured to Joyce but looked at Buffy. How much does she...?Mom knows Im the Slayer, Buffy said. I know, I suck with the secret identity thing.Jason shook his head. You certainly have a unique approach to slaying, Ill give you

that. You know other Slayers? Joyce asked.Past tense, Jason said softly. Ive known a few. Were they all as much trouble as she is? Joyce asked.Mom! Buffy snapped, turning around to face her mother.

Actually, Ive known one or two who were slightly more independent than yourdaughter.

There, Buffy said. You see?But I will admit... he started. Buffy turned and glowered at him.Jason looked down at her. Ive never met a Slayer who was so deeply cared about by

those around her.Buffy managed a slight grin. Thanks. Can I get you anything? Joyce asked him after a moment. Something to drink,

maybe? No thanks, Jason told her. But I will need your help.My help? Joyce asked.Yep. Jason folded his arms. Giles is bringing Oz and Willow over, and then hell be

ferrying Xander and Cordelia, if the Chases will allow it.So now Casa Summers is mission control? Buffy asked. Were going with the safety in numbers theory, Jason told her.Safety in numbers? Joyce asked.Jason glanced at Buffy and spoke, That vampire lord you dealt with, Stark? He has a

very deep vindictive streak. We gave him some trouble last night, and hes probably going to tryto return the favor tonight.

Joyce fixed Buffy with a gaze. An all-nighter at the library, huh? Joyce asked. Thatswhat Xander told me.

Buffy turned to Jason. See why I lied to her?Shes your mother, Jason told Buffy. Its her job to worry.Hey! Buffy said. Whose side are you on?Thank you, Joyce said to Jason. Now, just what were you doing last night? she asked

her daughter.Buffy furrowed her brow. My job.I see. Joyce frowned for a moment before looking up at Jason. Were you helping

her?Yes, I was, he admitted. And let me guess; you two have to work tonight?Yeah, Buffy admitted. So why is everyone else coming over here? Joyce asked.Because if youre all together, itll be harder for Stark to hurt you, Jason told her.Xander and Giles can protect you guys if creepo sends any vampires after you, Buffy

told her mom.If he has any left, Jason said to Buffy.Theres always the southern belle. We didnt see her last night.Melanie? Joyce asked.Jason nodded. Buffys right. Shes probably still alive. And likely out for blood, like her

master.Joyce shook her head. They seemed so nice when I first met them.Thats what they do, Jason told her. They lie. Really well.Buffy gave him a look. At least somebody does.

Buffy answered the door. She recognized Giles from the knock; four sharp raps, steady, with no rhythm. Come on, you love that about him, Buffy told herself as she swung the dooropen.Hes so reliable in so many ways. Stable. Stuffy, even. In a good way.

Come on in, Buffy said cheerfully.Giles removed his glasses and cleaned them with a handkerchief. Hello, Buffy, he said.

It was quite a piece of work talking Mrs. Chase into letting Cordelia accompany us.Ill bet, Buffy agreed. Did you try to confuse her with too many words, or did you tell

her the truth?Actually, I opted for telling her that we saved Cordelias life, so we knew what was best

for her in the short term. She bought that? Buffy asked.Giles replaced his glasses. Oh, yes. But I had to mislead her into thinking I was some

sort of law enforcement agent.Thats you, Buffy said, tapping him on the arm. The X-Giles.Giles scowled at her terrible pun.It ought to be very interesting at the next parent-teacher night, Giles muttered.Dont worry about that, Cordelia said, coming up behind Giles. She never goes to

those things.Giles favored Cordelia with a withering gaze. I wonder why.Cordelia gave him a sweet smile. Because she has a life. She tugged on Xanders hand,

pulling him after her as she entered the house. And you find that lack of tact so refreshing, dont you? Buffy gibed him.Buffy, a favor, Giles said as he closed the door. She raised an eyebrow.Do shut up.Buffy frowned as Giles stepped past her into the living room, where everyone had

gathered.Thank you all for coming, Giles said.Like we had a choice, Cordelia mumbled.Giles regarded her. You can always return home and subject yourself to the dangers that

we rescued you from not twenty-four hours ago, or you can be quiet and listen.Cordelia tried to sink into the couch. Sorry. Now, this is relatively simple, Giles explained. Were fairly sure that Khraftstar will

try to exact revenge on us tonight. By having everyone in one place, it makes it much moredifficult for him to achieve that.

Oz raised his hand. Yes, Oz?I dont mean to question things here, seeing as you guys have been doing pretty good so

far, but doesnt gathering us all up make it that much easier for this guy to find us?Giles glanced at Jason and Buffy. We wont all be here.Willow followed Giles gaze. Youre sending Buffy and Jason out to attack him.

Giles nodded.Xander asked, Why not wait until its daytime? Wouldnt that be better? That way you

can knock him out and give him a nice lethal sun tan.Giles adjusted his glasses. Were not sure where he is.You dont know where he is? Willow asked.Stark said something to me about a mansion once, Joyce offered. Melanie said it was

a huge place, but they never said where it was.Mansion? Jason asked. Close by?

I think so, Joyce responded. They were sort of vague about that. Why am I not surprised? Buffy piped up.Theres a whole bunch of mansions out by the North Downs, Cordelia said. He could

be in one of those. Theyre not too far.Giles held up a hand. We dont have the luxury of waiting and looking for him. Hes

probably going to make some sort of vengeful gesture tonight. The sun sets in a few hours, andwe have to be ready.

Ready for what? Xander asked. I thought you said Buffy and Old Guy here weregoing to take the fight to them.

Old Guy? Jason echoed.Giles replied, They are. But in case Melanie manages to elude them, we want to be

prepared.Whats she gonna do? Willow asked.I dont know, for certain, Giles told her. But whatever she tries, well be ready.Xander will scare her off, wont you? Cordelia asked him.You betcha, Cordy, he said. When everyone looked at him, he said, Hey! I shooed her

away from Willows house that time. It could happen.

Melanie will be a little more desperate now, Jason spoke. I dont think shell scarethat easy.

Or you could take care of her, Xander suggested.Id like to, Jason murmured softly. How exactly are you gonna go after this guy if you dont know where he is? Oz

wondered. The Slayer can detect vampires, Giles said. After last nights... he stopped, glancing

at Joyce. Well, after last nights scuffle, I should think most vampires still here would be keento avoid the Slayer.

Yeah, Xander agreed. You mean both vampires, Giles.Giles frowned at Xander.Xander added, There cant be too many left after the way we blew through them last

night.Joyce glanced at Xander and then faced Buffy. He was working with you? she queried.Hes my understudy, Buffy said. Sort of. It was mostly a training exercise, mom.So how many vampires did you kill? Joyce asked Xander.Only a few, he said. Buffy and Jason are the real heavyweights. Like Buffy said-- I

was mostly there to learn. You know, like an observer. But he killed the one that kidnapped me, Cordelia offered. Creepy bastard. You were kidnapped? Joyce asked. By vampires?Uh huh, Cordelia said. They broke Ozs ankle, too.Its a sprain, Willow and Oz corrected her in unison.Jason leaned over to Giles and whispered, I have to talk to Buffy. Alone. He glanced at

Joyce. Now looks like a good time.Could I possibly join you? Giles asked. Ive seen Joyce wax maternal and it is not a

pretty sight. No, you handle this group, remember? We agreed? I get the Slayer, you hold the fort.Giles scowled at him. Thanks.Buffy, Jason said. I need to talk to you. In private, if possible.Buffy nodded. She moved close to Giles and said, Try to make sure mom will let me out

of the house again in this lifetime.

Ill see what I can do, Giles told her dryly.Buffy and Jason moved into the dining room.So none of you were at the library last night? Joyce asked. No, we were all at the library, Willow explained.I wasnt, Oz volunteered.Oh, right, Oz wasnt, Willow corrected.Because you had a sprained ankle, Joyce ventured.Oz nodded. Yes, maam.If you dont mind, Joyce, Id like to... Giles started, but Joyce stopped him with a dark

look.It can wait, he mumbled as she turned back to Xander.

*This better be good, Buffy said. My mom is in there considering whether I can ever

wander out of her sight again.

Giles will explain it to her, Jason assured her. Besides, this is important.Buffy folded her arms. Im listening.Khraftstar isnt like any other vampire youve ever faced. Hes older, stronger, and

much more cunning. Hes very hard to kill. The Master wasnt exactly a piece of cake, Buffy responded. No, Jason agreed, but Khraftstar was alive before there were vampires. He really is

the very first vampire. But because he was changed into one, rather than being bitten, he hascertain powers. And being close to Dahak doesnt hurt him, either.

So he does what? Turn invisible? Or are you talking about the lying thing? He can persuade people, Jason told her. Thats true. But Im talking about... I dont

know exactly what to call it. Jason shook his head. He can merge with the darkness. He can what? Buffy asked.Jason spread his arms. I dont know what to call it. He can make his body dissolve into

shadow. Ive seen him do it. One minute hes right there, and then... hes just gone. Vanished.Dissolved.

Buffy frowned. So thats why you never killed him.Ive tried, believe me, Jason told her. But he just evaporates when hes in danger.

Makes him damn tough to stake.Buffy nodded. You do have a plan b, right?I think so. But its tricky.Buffy gave him a half smile. Its always tricky. If this was an easy job, fate wouldnt

have to force me to do it.Im glad you feel that way, Jason spoke. Because only you can do this.

Buffy asked, Okay, cryptic old guy, Ill bite. Do what?We know that Khraftstar has the chakram, he began. That magic disk that talked to my mom in her dreams? Buffy asked.Thats right, Jason agreed. That magic disk is the key to this whole thing. Jason

leaned against the wall. Its the only weapon that can kill Khraftstar. And he has it. Buffy frowned. If its the only thing that can kill him, why doesnt he

bury it, or destroy it, or drop it in the ocean? Carrying it around with him is like begging to bekilled.

Its a revenge thing, Jason explained. Id tell you about it, but its a long story, andyoud probably be bored.

Probably, Buffy agreed. So we gotta get that disk thingy. Okay. How do we find it?Just like you can detect vampires, you can sense the chakram, explained Jason. It was

the weapon of the first Slayer, and it still carries some of her spirit with it. As a Slayer, you candetect it, if you know how to look for it.

I can sense it? Buffy asked. But that disk could be miles from here.Doesnt matter, Jason told her. Once you know what to look for, you can find it from

pretty far away.Let me get this straight, Buffy said. Im gonna sense some magic disk-- which I have

a connection to because its a Slayer thing-- and then were gonna go find it. And when we findit, super-old vampire will be right there. Then we chop his head off with it, right?

Jason shrugged. Pretty much.I dunno, Buffy told him. That seems kinda weak to me. I mean, how do you know Ill

even be able to find it?Because the only other person I ever told about this could find it. She was a descendant

of the original Slayer. She found it, and youre a lot more powerful than she was.

Oh, Buffy managed. So, what do I do?Its simple, really. At least in theory. You just concentrate on the disk. Just picture it in

your mind, and--I only saw it once, Buffy said.Thats okay, Jason told her. Just concentrate on the disk, and when you can picture it

really clearly, say Xena.Zeena? Buffy asked. Whats that? Some kind of magic Slayer password? Its the name of the first Slayer, Jason said. It was her chakram.Buffy blinked. She used to wear it on her belt, she murmured. What? Jason asked softly.Buffy looked up at him. I saw it, in a dream... she wore it on her belt.Jason nodded. Youll do fine.Buffy shrugged. Usually Giles is the one who handles the mumbo jumbo spooky type

stuff. I just sorta kill things.Jason patted her on the shoulder. Now you get to do both. Fun, isnt it?Buffy frowned at him. Are you sure youre not a Watcher?Jason held up his hands. Turned down for membership. Honest.Buffy shook her head. Figures.

*Jason sat at the desk in Buffys bedroom; the Slayer perched on the edge of her bed, her

eyes closed, concentrating. Her furrowed brow and stiff shoulders attested to the effort she putinto the task at hand. Jason watched her for a moment, then looked away out the window. I knowyou can do this, Jason thought. Melinda did it. If she could do it, Im certain you can, Buffy.

Buffy tried to picture the disk, but she had only seen it once. And even then it was beingswung at me. Not the best way to study something.

Buffy cleared her throat. Okay, its round. Hole in the center. Big hole. Silver. Sharpedge, with some gold around the inside. She tightened her eyes, frowning, and concentratedharder. Somethings missing, she thought. Theres some detail thats important that Im missing.

She took a deep breath and tried to relax. No use trying to force it, she told herself.Theres something about this disk, about being a Slayer...

Thats it! Buffy realized. I can sense vampires, most of the time. Ill just relax and letthat take over, and...

She could see the disk, the jagged gold edges cut sharply into the silvery steel. The bluestones embedded in the gold chips began to glow. Buffy could feel a connection, as if the diskwere in the room with her, and she could reach out and touch it...

Suddenly she saw a vampire breaking through a window and stabbing her mother; bloodgushed from her mothers stomach. Joyce cried out wordlessly, reaching for Buffy...

The Slayers eyes popped open. Jason, she said quietly. The big man looked over at her.He knows Im looking for it.Who?Dahak. Khraftstar. One of them.

How do you know? Jason asked.Buffy gave him a look. Trust me, I know. Hes trying to keep me from finding it.Jason nodded. Figures. He would try to keep it hidden.Any tips? asked Buffy.Tips? Jason responded. To getting around him? Them? Whoever it is?Have you seen the chakram yet? he asked her.Buffy nodded.Next time you see it clearly, say Xena right away.Do I actually have to say it, or...Just think it, Jason said. That should be enough to establish a link.Buffy looked at him skeptically. All right. Ill try it.She closed her eyes again and relaxed, thinking about how sensing vampires came

naturally to her, how she could feel a little shiver run through her when they were near, just aripple that alerted her. Buffy pictured the chakram again; she could see it clearly, with a sharpedge and little square golden areas instead of the jagged ones. She could almost feel it in herhand. The blue stones began to glow again. Buffys arm moved as she tried to pick up thechakram. As she reached, her thoughts were interrupted by a vision of Cordelia laying flat on herback, surrounded by vampires, giving birth to a demonic child. Buffy frowned, gritting her teeth. Not this time, she thought. We stopped you.

Cordelias features faded, merging with another womans face. This woman had blondehair and green eyes and cried out in pain. Not-Willow! Buffy recognized her. Not-Cordelia,really.

The blonde woman reached out to her, pushing away one of the vampires. Help me!she called out, when Khraftstar appeared.

You wont stop us next time, he jeered at her as he scooped up the baby and showed itto Buffy. Youll be dead, and your successor will be on the other side of the world.

Xena! Buffy shouted to herself, in her mind. The vision of Khraftstar faded, replaced by the sight of the disk.Im here, a voice assured Buffy. Come get me.Where? Buffy asked. Where can I find you?

He has me, the rotten bastard. Khraftstar. We know, Buffy said. We need to know where he is.We? the voice asked. Who is we?Im the Slayer, Buffy told the voice.Im here with Jason.Who is Jason?the voice demanded.Buffy shook her head. Hercules, she said aloud, and then repeated it in her head.Hercules is with you? the voice asked urgently.Yes. He told me how to reach you. Now how can we find you? Where are you?Tell Hercules I said thank you, the voice said.I will, I promise. Now how do we find you?Youll be able to sense me, even after we break our connection, the voice told her.

Come free me, Slayer. Ive been imprisoned way too long.I will, Buffy told her.The voice faded; the image of the disk vanished, to be replaced by a dark shadow that

writhed and undulated.IF YOU TRY TO RESCUE HER, YOU WILL DIE, the shadow told her.Already done that, Buffy retorted. Get a new threat.WHENIRE-ENTER THE WORLD,IWILL--

Dont you mean if I re-enter the world? Buffy asked the shadow. That whole babything didnt work out too well, did it?

The shadow lunged for her; Buffy ducked, throwing herself to the floor, when stronghands shook her shoulders, snapping her out of her trance.

She blinked and looked up. Hercules? she murmured.Lets keep that our little secret, okay?Buffy nodded. Are you all right? Jason asked. She nodded again, rubbing her forehead. I think so.Did you make contact with the disk?Buffy closed her eyes again. I sure did. And?She looked up at him, her hazel eyes seeming to take him in for the first time. She said

thank you.Jason asked, What? She wanted me to thank you. For helping her.You definitely made contact, Jason said.Buffy nodded in agreement. Dahak knows it too.Hard to keep a secret from the god of liars, Jason admitted.Hes gonna know were coming, Buffy spoke.Jason put his hands on his hips. Thats a whole different thing from stopping us.Buffy smiled. I know. Hes afraid of what we can do, now that we know everything.Jason folded his arms. You...dont know everything, Buffy.

She arched an eyebrow. You always keep secrets from your partners?Jason shook his head. I didnt only come here to kill Khraftstar.Buffy stood up, taking a deep breath. Lemme guess, she said. You came to Sunnydale

to teach English, too.Jason gave her a sharp look.Okay, Buffy told him. Spill.I came here to free Xena, he said. Her spirits been locked up in that chakram for three

thousand years. I figure thats long enough.

Buffy raised her eyebrows. Three thousand years? she asked.Jason nodded. Once Khraftstar is dead, I have to take the chakram and free Xenas

spirit. You gonna break it? Buffy asked.Jason glanced away. If it were only that simple.

*Too bad were outta holy water, Xander said to Giles. That really seemed to do the

trick last night.Giles nodded in agreement. Yes, it is rather effective. But until we can form some sort

of relationship with a member of the clergy, well have to do without.Bummer, Xander said. Somehow the thought of arming everybody with crossbows

isnt giving me the warm fuzzies.Giles glanced over at the group and back at Xander. Perhaps we could give one to Oz.

He seems responsible, and hes certainly brave. He proved that last night when he threw himself

at Melanie. So what about the rest of them? Xander asked. Crosses? Stakes?Yes, of course, Giles told him. Would you mind passing them out?Got it, Xander said, scooping up several stakes. He turned to face the group. Ladies

and Oz, step right up. Dont be shy, everyones got a stake in this.Giles rubbed his nose. Nervous energy, Rupert, nervous energy. Have patience with the

boy. He is doing the best he can.The Watcher turned to see Xander handing a stake to Joyce. What am I supposed to do

with this? she asked him.Xander made a stabbing motion with his free hand. Pointy end first, aim for the heart.

Its the first thing Giles taught me.Joyce shook her head. Im no Slayer, she told him.Like daughter, like mother, Xander quipped. Giles, you sure some of this Im not the

Slayer thing isnt hereditary?Giles sighed.A whole night cooped up with two teenaged couples and a worried mother.

Id rather be out facing that demon. When Giles didnt respond, Xander told Joyce, Its not like were gonna have to use

them. Then why give me one? Joyce asked. Im not a killer.Maybe not now, Xander replied. But its never too late to start.Willow slapped him on the arm, which elicited an Ouch!Actually, Mrs. Summers, hes right, Cordelia said. I never killed anybody before last

night. I didnt know if I could do it.

You... killed someone last night? Joyce asked.Oh yeah, Cordelia told her. Two vampires. The first ones kinda scary, but when they

just poof and turn into dust, you dont feel so bad about it.Joyce nodded. Okay...Will, Xander said, handing her a stake. Willow took it and made an imaginary kill,

feeling the weight of the stake. She nodded her approval.Oz, heres your backup, Xander said, handing Oz a stake and sliding the last one into

    his belt.

Back up? Oz asked, tapping his finger against the business end of the stake.Yeah. Youre gettin the other crossbow.Hey, Willow spoke, how come he gets the crossbow? How come you guys get all the

weapons? She frowned. We can fight too, you know. Will, hey, Xander said. I know you can fight.Willow pouted. I want the crossbow, she said.Giles? Xander asked.Hmm?Willows got a mean case of crossbow envy. She hit him on the shoulder.Oz, Giles asked, would you mind terribly if we gave your crossbow to Willow?Be my guest, Oz said, smiling at his girlfriend. I always knew you were a fatale

femme.Willow smiled back at him. Thanks.Xander moved back to where Giles stood, looking out the window at the slowly setting

sun. Are you sure about this?Giles glanced at him. The crossbow? Absolutely.Xander frowned. But you said--

Xander, Giles said. Neither of them has been trained in the crossbow, as you have.Willow is as courageous and as level-headed as Oz, if not more so. With any luck we wont haveto use it at all; but if we do, Willow is an excellent choice. He rubbed the bridge of his nose. You shouldnt underestimate her. Willow is very resourceful.

Im not underestimating her, Xander said softly. Its just, you know...Willows myoldest friend in the world, okay? He shook his head. Its kinda hard to imagine her with acrossbow zapping a vampire.

Yes, Im sure she was entirely comfortable watching you march off to battle last night,Giles told him.

And you say Cordy just blurts out whatevers on her mind, Xander snapped, movingback toward the others.

Giles frowned and shook his head. At least I know that its not just Buffy. All teenagersare difficult.

Rupert, Joyce spoke, coming up behind him, I dont like to question you on things likethis...

Giles turned to face her. But...But are you sure this is absolutely necessary? The kids all seem a little nervous. Im not

sure putting weapons in their hands is such a good idea.Giles removed his glasses. I honestly hope we wont have to use them, Joyce. I dont

think Khraftstar will come after us. But he has made gestures of one sort or another toward you,Cordelia, and Willow. We shouldnt take that lightly. If all goes well, hell be far too busy togive us any thought at all.

Thats another thing, Joyce said. If this vampire is so dangerous, arent you worried

about sending Buffy out after him?Giles met Joyces eyes; he saw the concern there, the worry, and he realized no matter

what he said, he could not erase it. Joyce was Buffys mother; her maternal instincts wereasserting themselves.

Joyce, Giles said softly, Jason is a few thousand years old. As far as I can tell, he isvirtually impossible to kill. Hes as strong and as resilient as Buffy, and I know he cares abouther. He will help protect her when they face Khraftstar. Giles put a hand on her shoulder. I

cant tell you not to be concerned; I am as well. But she is not alone in this battle. And keepingall of us together-- and armed-- assures her that she doesnt need to worry about us.

Joyce managed a wan smile. Thank you, Rupert. Not at all, Joyce, he responded.Cordelia! Willow scolded from across the room. What? She has been in there with him a long time. And even you said he was a hunk.Willow glared at Cordelia. At least I didnt call dibs when I saw him.Cordelia arched an eyebrow. Im not the one you need to worry about.Im not worried! Willow said.Cordelia smiled archly. Besides, we know Buffy has this thing for older guys. And I

mean way older guys...Joyce looked at Giles. Maybe I better go check on them.Giles nodded. It has been a while, he agreed.Joyce turned to move toward the stairs when Buffy and Jason appeared. We know how to find the chakram, Buffy said.Jason spoke, Were pretty much ready. Hows everything going here? Were all fine, Giles spoke up. Everyones prepared.

Buffy walked over to her mother. This is it, she said. Its time. Wish me luck.Joyce grabbed her daughter and held her tight. Be careful, Joyce murmured.I always am, mom, Buffy whispered. I always am.

*That way, Buffy said, gesturing.Jason flipped on his turn signal. North? Is that way north? Buffy asked him.He nodded.North, she spoke with certainty. Jason waited for the light to change and made a left

hand turn, heading on to a dimly lit two-lane road that seemed far more rural than the rest ofSunnydale.

Woah, Buffy said.Woah? Jason asked as he flicked on his high-beams.We are headed out to the North Downs, Buffy spoke. Cordy called that one. That would explain the north part, Jason told her.Buffy gave him a look. Okay, compass man. I told you I could find your disk. I didnt

say Id get all Rand-McNally about it.Just so long as were heading the right way, Jason said, his eyes darting back and forth

at the scenery. We are, Buffy assured him.

Cool night air blew in through the windows; the unseasonably mild evening provided awelcome relief from the heat of early August, and a quarter moon hung in the sky, looking downat them. Buffy looked out the window at the rolling meadows as Jason drove.Beautiful area, shethought as they passed a large house with an enormous yard.I could live out here, no problem.

Jason glanced from side to side, half-convinced that Khraftstar would try some sort ofambush against them. The immortal suspected that Khraftstar could detect Buffy the same wayshe could detect him.No reason to tell her that, though. The important thing was to get her away

from everyone else and let us face him by ourselves. He looked over at Buffy, taking her in asshe watched the scenery slip by.

In a few more years shes going to be a stunningly beautiful woman, Jason thought. Shesreally pretty now, and shes only seventeen. He shook his head. What am I thinking? he askedhimself.Buffy may not have a few years. A Slayers life is a hard one. Even though shes moretalented than most Slayers Ive known, still...

Buffy glanced at Jason and caught him watching her. He looked away quickly.Buffy brushed a strand of hair out of her face. Were you checking me out? she asked

him softly.Jason shook his head. No.Yeah you were, Buffy told him. You may be old, but youre not dead.Buffy, he said. I was not checking you out, okay?Dont you think Im a little young for you? she asked. I mean, I know you look thirty,

but theres this way huge age thing, and...For the last time, Jason said, I was not checking you out.Buffy nodded. Okay.He glanced at her. Okay what?

Okay you werent checking me out, she said. You dont sound convinced, he said, slowing down for a stop sign. Are you? she asked him. Convinced, I mean?Jason turned to look at her. Which way? he asked.Buffy gestured again. North.Thats east, he corrected her.Right. East, Mr. Im not checking you out.Jason popped the parking brake. Buffy, he said softly. What is it going to take to

convince you? He shook his head. Dont we have enough on our minds right now?Buffy furrowed her brow. Look. Ive seen older guys-- and I mean really older guys--

give me that look. That, if only she werent so young look. Buffy folded her arms. Yourenot the first guy over a hundred years old who thought I was worth a second glance. Shepointed at Jason. I dated a vampire, for your information.

I know, Jason said. Angelus. Giles told me about him.Buffy nodded. Then you know the age thing is not a problem.Jason raised his eyebrows. It sounds like you wantme to be checking you out.I didnt say that, Buffy replied.Jason tilted his head. Not that I would mind if you were, she added.Buffy, he began, but she cut him off.I know, she said, holding up a hand. Ive heard it before. We have different lives. We

come from different worlds. Blah, blah blah. She met his eyes. Its just that... well...Go on, he said.

The last few days, when youve been around like all the time... it sorta reminds me ofwhen Angel was here. You know, this big, strong, mysterious, immortal guy who knowseverything and is here to help me out. She smiled slightly. Its kinda nice.

Jason nodded. Im not Angel, Buffy.I know, she told him. I can see you in a mirror. And you look good in sunlight.Jason chuckled.Look, Im not saying anything, okay? Except that its been nice not being so alone all

the time. Willow has Oz and Xander has Cordelia, and I dont have anyone like that. Not that

youre like that, she added hastily, at all. But its kinda hard telling guys, Oh, by the way, Ima super-hero, I save the world and kill bad guys every week. She looked away from him. WithAngel-- and with you-- I dont have to do that. You guys know all that, and you just accept it.

You really miss him, dont you? Jason asked her.Buffy spoke, Yeah. I loved him so much. I still do.Jason touched her shoulder. I think maybe you might want to wait a little while longer

before you try to replace him.She nodded.Besides, I wasnt checking you out, I was admiring you.The difference being? she asked him, arching an eyebrow. The difference being that I admire who you are on the inside as well, Buffy. Youre the

strongest and most dedicated Slayer Ive ever known. You give hope to a lot of people. Theres alot to be said for that.

Buffy smailed. Thanks.Suddenly she frowned. Wait. You said on the inside as well. You were scoping me

out.Jason pointed past her out the window. East?

Buffy frowned at him. Yes.Jason took off the parking brake and made a right hand turn that took him on the east

road. The scenery remained virtually the same, with a brook winding lazily across the wide

open stretches of grass, slipping under the road and meandering along the other side, disappearing into a copse of trees. Buffy noticed that the houses started to space themselvesfurther apart; they also began to sport massive porches, and extra wings, and multiple cargarages. Theres some damn rich people living out here, she mused as they drove by a sprawlingmansion dotted with amber lights to accentuate its architecture.

Jason kept his speed steady; any one of these houses could be their destination, anddespite her talk earlier of being certain she could find the chakram, he had his doubts aboutBuffys abilities.Everything seems to be going well so far, he thought, but shes new at this, andshe--

Here, Buffy stated.Jason slowed down. This one? he asked, jutting his chin in the direction of a darkened

home that rivalled Sunnydale high school for size.Yup, Buffy spoke softly, looking at him. This is it.Jason nodded. Okay, he said, pulling into the long driveway. You ready?Buffy nodded in reply. Lets waste this guy.Jason drove up the long driveway slowly, turning off the lights and taking in the layout of

the huge house, noting the location of the doorways and windows and how high off the groundthe second floor balconies stood. He had just started to get a feel for the place when the car rolledup to the high iron fence that ran around the entire length of the grounds.

Bet its locked, Buffy said. That wont be a problem, Jason told her. What are you, Superman? You cant bend iron.Jason shrugged. Well see. He got out of the car and moved to the gate.As Buffy watched him approach the gate, she felt a shiver of recognition; a vampire

loomed near. She thumbed the button to lower the window, but Jason had the safety on. Shethrew open her door. Jason! she called out.

He turned to look at her.

Vampire, she told him, getting out of the car. Close.Very close, Melanie said, rising up out of the grass on the other side of the fence. Jason

stepped back, and Buffy drew a stake. You, Jason said softly.Melanie nodded. She looked at Buffy and held up her hands. Its okay. Im not going to

attack anyone.Right, Buffy answered her.I just want to talk, Melanie spoke. Buffy, theres no way I could beat the both of you

in combat, you know that.Oh, I know it, all right, Buffy replied. But you can probably do that hypnosis lying

thing like your creepy boyfriend. Im not lining up to be his dinner.Melanie looked at Buffy. Ive only been a vampire fifty years. Im not nearly old

enough to have that kind of power. That kind of strength takes centuries of work.So what do you want? Buffy asked her.I want to talk to... Jason, she said. Alone. No way, Buffy said, raising her stake. I--Buffy, he told her, its okay.

What?Jason put a big hand on her shoulder. Its okay. She cant get at us through the fence

anyway.Buffy frowned. Shes dangerous. I dont like this.Jason said, Just trust me on this one. Please.Buffy gave him a long look. If she touches you, she is so history.Agreed, Jason spoke. He turned to face Melanie and said, Melinda... what do you

want?Melanie looked at Buffy. The Slayer gave her a dark stare, but stepped back two paces.

Melanie looked back at Jason, and her expression softened. You havent changed at all.Thats immortality for you, Jason said. But then youd know all about that, wouldnt

you?I came here to make you an offer, she said softly. You dont need to die.Jason folded his arms. I have no intention of dying.Melanies face grew concerned. Dont underestimate him, Hercules. Khraftstar is more

powerful than you realize. Hell kill the both of you in a minute. Thanks for that vote of confidence, Jason told her. Anything else? She lowered her head. I know why you came to Sunnydale, she told him. I know what

youre looking for, what you want. She looked up at him. You want the chakram.Jason nodded. You used it as bait to lure me here. Now youre gonna have to deal with

the consequences of that. What if I gave it to you? she asked him.Jason merely stared at her.

Would you leave if I delivered it to you?Why would you do that? he asked her.Melanie spoke, Because I dont want you to kill Raymond.I thought you said hed tear through Buffy and I.Melanie nodded. He probably will. But youve got a lot of experience, and Buffy is...

very lucky. She closed her eyes. Im not a gambler, Hercules. You know that. Its unlikely youtwo will kill him, but not impossible. Why should I take the chance of that happening when I canprevent it?

Were supposed to let you just walk away? You kidnapped a friend of Buffys, and youtried to kill all of us at one point or another. He shook his head. If I let him go, hell just trythis somewhere else until he succeeds. Jason frowned. I cant let that happen.

Melanie looked up at the tall man. I love him, Hercules. You remember what thats like, dont you? Half a century ago you loved me.

Jason closed his eyes. Dont remind me.I have to, she said. So youll understand why Im asking you this. Just take the

chakram and go. Free Xena if you have to-- I dont care about any of that. I just dont want youfighting Raymond.

You cant stop us, Buffy spoke up.Stay out of this, Slayer, Melanie hissed.Shes right, Jason told the vampire. One way or the other, Melinda, its going to end

tonight. Either your new boyfriend will plunge the world into darkness, or well kill him. Youcant buy us off-- even with a prize like the chakram-- just because you love him. Im not thrilledwe have to break your heart, but I didnt tell you to fall in love with him.

Melanie gave him a bitter look. I cant believe I loved you when I was mortal.Jason frowned, Neither can I.

She started to walk away when he said, If you leave right now, well spare you. What?? Buffy blurted. If you leave Sunnydale and never come back-- ever-- then well let you go. He

exhaled. Were not here for you, Melinda. The hell were not-- Buffy started, but Jason motioned for quiet.Open the gate and let us in and just keep walking, and you can live to see another

moonrise. Stay in there... He let the words hang in the air.Melanie stood still for a moment, a breeze blowing her long dark hair around her face

like a shroud. Then she turned away and resumed her walk toward the house.Jason shook his head. I never get anything the easy way, he said as he grabbed the

massive iron gate and yanked it off its hinges.

*Melanie paused at the bottom of the stairs, peering into the darkness. Raymond? she

asked.I am here, Khraftstar responded, coalescing from the inky blackness.Theyre here, Melanie told him. They have come.He stroked her chin gently. I know, he said softly. He pulled his hand away and

slapped her viciously across the face. Melanie spun away from him and fell backward to thefloor.

I also know you tried to buy him off, Khraftstar hissed. Did you think I would beunware of your scheme?

I did it for you, Melanie explained. I did it because Im scared.Scared? he asked. You infant! Child! He glared down at her, allowing his hunting

face to come over him. You are a vampire! You are one of the greatest race to ever walk theEarth, and youre scared?

Hes old, Melanie explained. And hes powerful. And this is not an ordinary Slayer...

None of them are ordinary! Khraftstar growled. They are all servants of the Light, even if theyve forgotten that. Each of them is dangerous. But not as dangerous as I am. He bentover and picked Melanie up as if she were a rag doll. And you think I am so weak that I cannotstand up to a half-witted immortal and a seventeen year old girl? He threw her away from him.

Melanie landed hard, her back slamming against a shard of a broken bench. She grimacedin pain and rolled away as Khraftstar advanced upon her.

You doubt the power of Dahak? he asked. No! she said. I dont! Im just afraid for you.He lifted her again. Why?Because I love you, and I dont want to see anything happen to you.Khraftstar considered this; he set her down gently. Very thoughtful of you, Melanie. But

if you believed in Dahaks power, in his vengeance, you wouldnt have to worry about me.I dont care about Dahak, Melanie answered him. I care about you. I dont care if he

makes it into this world or not! I only care that youre all right.Khraftstar blinked, his hunting face disappearing. You cant mean that.Melanie looked up at him. I do. She brushed herself off. Im happy to help you bring

your master into this world, and Ill do anything I can to see that it happens. But Im doing it foryou, not for him.

Without him, I am nothing, Khraftstar said. No, Melanie told him. You are everything. To me, anyway. I know you serve some

higher purpose, but all I care about is that you are alive and well and in love with me. Shelooked away. The rest takes care of itself.

Are you serious? he asked her.She nodded.Khraftstar closed his eyes. The Master calls his followers in many ways, he spoke after

a moment. He looked up at Melanie. When this night is over, and I have drank the blood of theSlayer and Hercules, I will make this up to you, Melanie. I will reward your love for me. Andwhen Dahak has again taken his place in the world, you will be my queen. He ran a handthrough her hair. You will help me wipe the humans away from our Earth.

Melanie nodded. So long as I can be with you, thats fine, she said.Khraftstar raised his head; his features cleared, as if he listened to a song only he could

hear. They are entering the mansion, he told Melanie. Go fetch the chakram and bring it

here. And be careful not to touch it!I know, she said. I dont want that witch in my body either.Melanie kissed Khraftstar, and then she bolted for the stairs.

*Buffy tried the knob on the front door, a massive mahogany barrier with no windows and

no knocker. Locked, she announced.Jason gently guided her aside, lowered his shoulder, and snapped the door off its hinges.Dont they knock where you come from, or were you born before doors were invented?

Buffy queried. Its not like they were gonna let us in, Jason argued.

Good point, the Slayer conceded. But now they know where we are. They would have known anyway, Jason told Buffy. Khraftstar can probably smell us

from here, or hear our pulse. Dont forget his powers. He could be like anywhere in here, right? So long as theres a shadow, he could be

hiding there?Jason shrugged. He needs a fair amount of darkness. It has to be at least his size, and

hes not a small man. But yes, aside from that, he could be anywhere.Oh, Buffy said. Lets make this a little harder for him. She flicked on the lights.Red bulbs came to life, casting an eerie hue over the foyer and spilling into the living

room.Great, the young woman said. He lives in a giant darkroom.Makes sense, Jason spoke.Buffy glared up at him.Besides, you look good in red, he joked.Buffy rolled her eyes. Lets just go get this guy, okay? Geez, even the master wasnt this

bad. This guy has a degree from the university of creepiana. They moved in from the foyer and walked into the living room. Buffy hit another switch,

and more red lights came to life. Jason pointed to the painted over windows. He has this placepretty well sewn up, but most older vampires have a phobia about sunlight. Hell probably beunderground.

Basement? Buffy asked.Jason nodded.Figures, she said as they made their way through the living room. They stopped for a

moment on the other side of the room and listened, but they couldnt hear anything other thantheir own breathing. Buffy flicked on the lights; they revealed another living room, much like thefirst. Wonderful, she said. More couches.

It is a mansion, Jason murmured. Whatd you expect?A floorplan would have been helpful, Buffy said, looking around.Didnt you ever live in a castle? he asked.Buffy turned to meet his eyes.Stupid question, he said. Forget it.The Slayer started to cross the room, but Jason said, Hold it.Hold it? Buffy asked. There were windows on every room on the outside of the house, he said.Buffy nodded. So he wont be in any of those rooms, and its probable the entrance to the basement

isnt either.Buffy digested the information. So, we have to find some room-- or hallway-- that has

no windows. No outside walls.Right, he said.

Back to the foyer? He nodded, and they retraced their steps. This time they tried a door directly opposite the

front door, but found it locked.Let me guess, Buffy said. Jason broke it off the hinges, and they switched on the light.

A long hallway, bathed in red, stretched ahead of them.Bingo, Jason said as he started down the hall. The chakram isnt that way, Buffy said.He turned to face her and raised an eyebrow.

Its over there, she told him, pointing ahead of them but somewhat to the left.Jason put a hand on her shoulder. Well, dont take too long. I cant hold him off

forever.Buffy nodded and turned to go.Hey, Jason said softly.Buffy looked up at him.Watch yourself. Melinda could be out there.Buffy said, Thatd be her last mistake. Then she left.Jason shook his head and muttered, I hope she has the sense to stay away from Buffy.

He continued down the hall.Buffy made her way back through the two living rooms only to discover a third; this one

sported less furniture and had hardly any decorations on the walls. She glanced around andnoticed that the room led to a dead end. Perfect, she murmured. Now I have go back and trythat hallway-- or knock through a wall.

I wonder if Jason can kick through a wall, she mused as she started turn back to thesecond living room.Hes hell on doors and gates.

Something caught Buffys eye, and she spun to find herself staring into a full-length

mirror.Talk about useless, she said, looking at her own reflection. A mirror in a vampires

house? Whats next? A tanning bed?Buffy moved closer to the mirror to inspect it. She touched the surface and felt the

smooth glass, ran her hand down the center and began looking at the outer edges of the mirrorand its frame.

Could be a door, she murmured. Really small door, but a door. She ran a hand downthe left side of the mirrors frame and felt a small button the size of her pinky tip protruding fromthe egde of the frame. She pressed it and heard a rewarding clacking noise as the latch cameundone. Buffy pushed the mirror forward and stepped into another hallway, a pitch blackpassageway that seemed to have no light fixtures at all. Buffy pulled a stake from her belt andproceeded cautiously, leaving the mirror-door open in case she needed to come back this way ina hurry.

The hallway appeared to run parallel to the one she and Jason had found previously;Buffy let her eyes adjust to the darkness and moved slowly, keeping one hand along the left wall.He can appear from darkness-- darkness like this, she realized as she started down the hall. Justbecause he doesnt sleep on this level-- maybe-- or prefers it downstairs doesnt mean that hewouldnt come up here. But Buffy trusted her Slayer sense to alert her if something, orsomethings, came closer.

Her hand touched wood, and she stopped. Doorway, she realized. Bedroom? Den?Servants quarters? Buffy shrugged and ran her hand down the wooden door until she found theknob. She tried it, but it was locked.

Buffy frowned. Im no Jason, but... She gripped the knob and yanked hard, pulling it

out of the door with a creaking screech; then she pushed the wooden door open and entered theroom.

She tossed the useless knob on the bed and glanced around. Buffy flipped on the red lightand saw a small bedroom: a single bed with silk sheets, a chest of drawers, and a closet, open andempty. She left the door open to allow some of the dim red light to spill out into the blackhallway.

She could make out another door ten feet ahead of her on the left side, and she jogged toit, tearing the knob out of the wall again and entering. This room duplicated the other one in

every resect, even to the small but nicely made bed. Buffy frowned as she tossed this knob onthis bed and stepped back out into the hallway. This is going to get really old really fast if all Ifind are empty bedrooms. I know the place is big, but how many guests could they have, or need? She shrugged as she made her way to the next door. I just hope I find something soon, becauseJasons gonna need my help.

As Buffy closed her hands around the next doorknob, she felt a shudder run through her;she knew a vampire approached.Probably Khraftstar, she thought, stepping away from the doorand readying her stake. She braced herself for an attack, wondering which direction it wouldcome from; he could appear from almost anywhere, given how dark he kept the mansion. Butsuddenly Buffy heard a door open somewhere down the hall, and she knew instantly thatKhraftstar had not just passed through that doorway. Melanie. Has to be.

Buffy ran down the hall, the stake held in front of her in the darkness. She stopped in thedoorway of the room and glanced in; red light spilled out, and she could see Melanies formhunched over a chair.

Melanie grabbed something off the seat of the chair and turned to leave the study whenshe stopped short. Slayer, she hissed.

She has the chakram, Buffy knew in an instant, able to pinpoint the disks location. Put

it down, Buffy warned.Melanie smiled; her features wrinkled and her eyes went a horrible dull yellow. I dont

think so. She lifted the bundle she held, the chakram wrapped in a cloth, and added, But yourewelcome to try and take it from me.

Buffy shrugged. Since you offered so nicely, she said, launching herself at Melanie, who knocked away her stake with the chakram. Buffy landed in a crouch and rolled beneathMelanies kick; the Slayer lashed out with a low kick of her own and tripped the vampire, knocking her over.

Melanie rolled easily into a somersault, but Buffy was already up and on her. The Slayerlanded a vicious punch, and then another; Melanie smiled, showing her fangs, and backhandedBuffy, sending her sprawling across the room.

Do you have any idea how mad you made him? she asked Buffy as she advanced uponthe Slayer. Raymond is beyond furious! She kicked Buffy in the ribs, knocking her back intothe wall.

Melanie moved to Buffy and grabbed her by the ponytail, yanking her head up. Anddont think Hercules will save you! Youre both going to die today.

Buffy glared up at Melanie. I dont need anyone to save me, honey, she spat, slammingMelanie in the stomach and rolling away, hopping back up to her feet. Especially from you.

Well see, Melanie said, aiming a punch at Buffys head; the Slayer blocked it,grabbing Melanies wrist and throwing her across the room.

You know, Buffy said, moving in on the vampire, youd do a lot better if youd putdown the chakram. Buffy kicked at Melanie, but the taller woman rolled away, returning to herfeet.

Youd like that, wouldnt you? Melanie sneered.Actually, what Id like is to impale you on something nice and wooden, Buffy replied.

But Ill settle for just kicking your ass. Buffy kicked out, hitting Melanie in the knee andforcing the vampire to stumble. Buffy grabbed at the wrapped chakram, getting a good grip, andshe tugged at it.

No! Melanie growled, yanking it out of Buffys grasp and smacking the Slayer with theflat edge of the disk. Buffy stumbled backwards and fell into a chair.

You know, Buffy said, Im getting really tired of getting hit with that thing.

Thats the closest youll ever get to it, Melanie sneered.Buffy shot her an angry look and grabbed a book on the end table next to the chair; she

flung it at Melanie, who blocked it. Buffy grabbed another volume and tossed it; Melanie dancedaside.

Melanie smiled evilly. Youll have to do better than that, little girl, she snapped.I know, Buffy said, grabbing the arms of the chair and kicking off the floor; the chair

fell backward, and Buffy rolled into a somersault and ended up in a crouch.Melanie hesitated; she had lost sight of Buffy, and wasnt sure what the Slayers next

move would be. She took a few steps toward the door.Buffy grabbed a heavy tome from a low shelf behind her and threw it two-handed at

Melanie; the book spun like a frisbee and hit the vampire in the ribs, knocking her back into ashelf full of books. She slipped from her feet and hit the floor hard.

The Slayer pounced on Melanie before the vampire could get her bearings. Buffy grabbedthe heavy book and raised it high, bringing it down on Melanies head; the vampire slumped andlay still.

Buffy took a deep breath and grabbed the still bundled-up chakram from her hand; theSlayer stood, looking down at the unconscious vampire.

You know, she said, exhaling, Giles is right. I really should hit the books more often. Then she unwrapped the chakram, a slight grin on her face as the nine stones on each side

glowed a bright blue.Come to mama, Buffy said as she gripped the chakram...Warriors shouting on a hilltop, waving their swords, calling her name... Hercules,

touching her cheek, kissing her... a young woman, holding her tightly, telling her to promise, promise, that she would never turn into a monster... a huge battle, with many soldiers, and fireand death all around her... tears of joy running down her face as the same young woman held upher baby, a son... and a terrible fight with a dark man, white teeth flashing behind a black beard, his laughter ringing...

Buffy blinked as she remembered to breathe. She gazed down at Melanie. How much she resembles me, a voice inside the Slayer said.Hello? Buffy wondered.Xena?Slayer, the voice responded. You did it. You freed me!Sort of, Buffy agreed. Now youre inside me.Much better than being stuck in that disk, the voice told her.Ill take your word for it, Buffy said. We gotta go help Jason.Hercules fights Khraftstar? the voice queried. That was the plan, Buffy told the voice. We have to help him. Lets move!

What about her? Buffy asked.First things first, the voice instructed. Khraftstar first, his lackey second. Im with ya, Buffy said as she bolted out of the study and back down the darkened

hallway, retracing her steps through the living rooms and sprinting down the hidden hallway.

*Jason ducked as the rubble flew past him, splintering off the wall. Wish I still wore those

gauntlets, he thought as he leapt over a pile of broken furniture and landed on the far side of theroom. He picked up the seat of a stone bench and flung it at Khraftstar.

The vampire ducked it easily.Youre stalling, Hercules, Khraftstar said. And I know it. Youre waiting for the

Slayer to arrive and finish me off. He smiled, baring his long fangs. Ive read the prophecytoo.

Jason shook his head and looked for another piece of rubble.Khraftstar shook a finger at him. Very good! Youre avoiding eye contact. Youve done

your homework. The vampire leapt over the obsidian altar to Dahak and landed in front ofJason.

But so have I! He backhanded Jason, sending him spinning into the wall.Get up! Khraftstar said. Im not done with you!Jason tried to shrug off the stunning blow, but Khraftstar hit him once more, kicking the

immortal in the ribs and slamming him up against the wall again. Not so tough without theSlayer, Hercules?

Jason rose to his feet. I can take care of you on my own, he said, punching Khraftstar inthe stomach and knocking him back into the altar. In fact, I owe you a couple more. Headvanced on the vampire.

Khraftstar stood just as Jason came up to him. You owe me? he howled. All the times

you and your damned Slayers have stopped me, and you owe me? He hissed at the immortal, opening his mouth wide.

Look at me, Hercules! Look at me!Jason tried to turn his head, but Khraftstar grabbed him, wrapping his cold hands around

the mans skull. Jason tried to close his eyes, but he found himself drawn in by the dead yelloworbs, and he stared unblinkingly.

Offer me your neck, Khraftstar purred.Jason tilted his head. The vampire leaned in close, fangs bared, when Jason landed a

savage uppercut, lifting Khraftstar off the floor and spilling him on top of the altar.I dont think so, Jason said. I was alive before vampires too, remember? He smiled.

Your little trick doesnt work on me.Khraftstar rolled to his feet, swearing under his breath. I have other weapons, he

snarled, drawing a dagger and throwing it at Jason. The big man caught it in mid-air and threw itback.

The vampire plucked the blade in mid-flight as easily as Jason had; he re-sheathed it.Im waiting, Jason said.Khraftstar leapt at Jason, his arms outstretched; Jason readied himself for the blow, but it

never came. The big immortal looked around but couldnt see his opponent.Great, Jason muttered. He melded with the darkness.Jason could hear the faint hiss of a laugh; as he turned to face it, Khraftstar appeared

behind him and slammed his head into the altar.Idiot! the vampire said. Did you think I would suddenly forget about my greatest

strength? He hit Jasons head again, hard, driving it full force into the stone. That I would

hesitate to use my ally, the darkness?Khraftstar took Jasons head in both hands and brought his knee up; there was a crack as

the immortals nose broke. The darkness gives me strength, Khraftstar said. He drove an ironfist into Jasons temple, further dazing the big man, and then he grabbed Jasons face and liftinghis head. Each time I merge with it, I am rejuvenated. You could have me on the verge of deathand it wouldnt matter. He smiled, licking Jasons blood off his hand.

He raised an eyebrow. Ive never tasted the blood of an immortal, he said. Is this whatambrosia tastes like?

Khraftstar landed a savage blow to Jasons midsection, doubling the immortal over; hefollowed with a kick to the head, spinning the big man in place. Jason tried to remain on his feet, but Khraftstar appeared in front of him and slammed him, two-handed, in the temple once more.

Jason tottered, one hand cupping his broken nose.Khraftstar reached out and knocked Jasons hand away from his face. Ill be sure to

drink you dry-- after youre dead. Good bye, Hercules.Khraftstar reared back, his fist aimed at the big mans broken nose. Dimly Jason realized

the next blow would drive his splintered cartilege up into his brain and kill him, but being sobadly dazed, he lacked the strength of will to lift his arms to protect himself. He teetered on theedge of unconsciousness, barely standing, and tried to blink away the dusky haze that descendedover his vision.

Khraftstars arm flew forward, but something stopped it at the last second; a whooshingnoise filled the chamber as the chakram sailed by, and the vampires amputated hand fell to thefloor. Lacking a fist, the punch fell short, and Khraftstar smacked Jason with his bloody stumpon the top of his chest. The big man fell over.

The chakram hit the far wall, pinged the obsidian altar, glanced off a piece of rubble, andreturned to Buffy. Thats pretty damned handy, the Slayer thought.

Khraftstar shrieked in pain. You bitch! You know what you have to do, the voice told Buffy.Thats a scratch, Buffy told him. Just the beginning of what Im gonna do to you.Khraftstar turned to face her. You have no idea what you are dealing with, child, he

told her, allowing himself to begin dissipating.Youre right, I dont, Buffy said, slinging the chakram. But Xena does. The disk sailed past Khraftstar, who smirked at the Slayer. The chakram caromed off the

altar, skipped up off the far wall and buried itself in Khraftstars back. He cried out wordlessly,an incoherent howl of pain.

Whats the matter, Khraftstar? Buffy asked as she approached him.He had stopped dissolving, and his body had reformed, except for the severed hand. Pain

clouded his yellow eyes. How? he asked, his voice a snarl. How do you stop me?The chakram is a weapon of the light, Buffy explained. When it touches you, you

cant just melt away. Youre not going anywhere. He lifted his right arm; where an inky blackness had seeped from him, now only blood

dribbled. His eyes widened. Even if you kill my body, he managed, the demon inside me will

still live. I will still carry out the will of my master.Buffy slammed him across the face with a right hook, spinning him around and knocking

him to his hands and knees.Oh, no you wont, she told him. Weve got that covered too.Khraftstar looked up, making eye contact with Buffy. Remove the chakram, he said

And I will spare you. He paused. Ill even forswear vengeance on your friends.

Buffy shook her head. You know, that woulda worked on me, that hypnosis crap youpulled on my mom. If it was just me. But its not. She punched Khraftstar. And thats for eventrying it in the first place.

Dont toy with him, Xena said, just grab the chakram!Im entitled to a little payback, Buffy replied. Now! Xena ordered her.Okay, geez, Buffy said, and grasped the chakram. She felt a jolt as Xena left her body,

moving back into the chakram, and suddenly something pushed her away from the
