Why Industry?

Companies formed by transporting goods from the east over land to the edge of Lake Erie, where they would be loaded onto ships for transportation

through the Great Lakes

•  Buffalo Harbor

•  Niagara River

•  Erie Canal

•  Railroads

With material moving, storage, transportation came people

Why EAST Side Industry?

East Side Industry was at the heart of the Buffalo’s growth

Natural boundaries forced companies looking to expand to look east

1820s – Hydraulic neighborhood develops using Little Buffalo Creek, various canals as an industrial center using water for power

Late 1820 - 1830s – Streets beginning to be laid out

1840s – Rail-lines enter the city

– Hamburg Canal: Clark and Skinner Canal, Ohio Slip/Ohio Basin

Why East Side Industry

1850s – Streets laid out to Jefferson Avenue

1860s – 1861 Buffalo City Directory, businesses such as Awning Makers, Blacksmiths, Brewers, Box Makers, Dry Goods, General Grocers, Shingle Manufacturers, Contractors, Tinsmiths, Vinegar Manufactures, and Wagon Makers moving into the East Side – but, no major single industry

1860 – 1890 Population expands from 81,000 – 255,000, and by 1895 population is 310,000

1890s – Forges, Foundries, Iron Works, Sewing Machine Manufacturers Furniture Makers, Liveries, Meat Packing, Food Transportation, Lumber Yards, Railroad Depots, and Tanneries

- Buffalo has 76 Dry Good Stores, and 51 of them are on the East Side
