Dear Reader!

Before you is the latest special edition of the Poznań Fair Magazine, devoted to the largest building trade fair in Central Europe: BUDMA International Construction Fair, WinDoor-tech Fair of Machines and Components for Window, Door, Gate and Facade Production, and CBS – Sports Facilities, Amenity Areas, Wellness & Spa.

Inside you will find above all detailed information about these events. Energy-efficient/passive home, intelligent home, wooden home, home without barriers – these are a selection of the most important exposition topics presented “Budma NEWS”. We also endeavoured to analyze the conditions and perspectives of Polish construction. This task was not easy. How difficult it currently is to forecast the con-struction sector is proven by the article “It’s Touch-and-Go” by edi-tor Marek Wielgo. We also encourage you to read the interview with the Under-Secretary of State for the Ministry of Infrastructure Piotr Styczeń, who urges that energy-efficient construction is not a future requirement, but a present day one.

For twenty years Budma has been a promotional platform for the latest construction solutions. Later in this magazine we write about how it has changed over this long period of time. We also present the investment plans of the Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie for the coming future.

We encourage you to plan your fair participation. To facilitate this you will find an information booklet for visitors in the centre pages which contains essential exposition information and a floor plan.

We wish you interesting reading. See you in Poznań.

The January construction fair in Poznań will have a unique, jubi-lee character. Trade specialists will be meeting for the twentieth time to take part in the largest construction trade fair in our part of Europe. Awaiting visitors will be special expositions, interac-tive demonstrations, and spe-cialist conferences, as well as – which of course is most important – close to five-hundred companies presenting the most modern construction offers at their stalls.

BudShow, in other words: KNX intelligent home page 9

When thinking about a home’s beautiful shape, number and size of rooms, architecture of windows and doors, or systems and instal-lations, did we not forget to give regard to the functionality of the whole composition? This is how our home becomes for us a com-fortable sanctuary and not a pro-verbial “ball and chain”. It is worth paying more attention to the technol-ogies and functionalities of various installations. We can accustom and adapt our home to our needs and lifestyle. This seemingly still shape can become friendly and help us in many prosaic activities.

Architecture Day special guest page 10

Budma is traditionally an occasion to meet with the most outstanding personalities from the architecture world. In January 2011 the special guest for Architecture Day will be one of the most well-known Finn-ish architects, globally-renowned Professor Rainer Mahlamäki.

Never before have construction companies been so divided in appraising the situation in which their industry has found itself. Although it appears to be blossoming in comparison to other industrial branches during the crisis, many small and medium companies, particu-larly those that specialize in residential, indus-trial, and hotel buildings, are on the brink of bankruptcy. All of this is due to loan obtain-ment difficulties. The consequence was a drop in housing demand and halt in the develop-ment of new investments by developers.

On the other side are large companies that specialize not only in the construction of roads, but also technical infrastructure and structures related with environmental pro-tection. Infrastructure construction sector has been practically unharmed by the crisis, as many investments receive European Un-ion contributions. At present such moguls as Polimex Mostostal or Budimex are lauding record setting order portfolios.

The whole residential construction sector has barely a 20-percent share, therefore in last year’s GUS statistics the crisis would not have been visible, if it were not for...the winter. The freezing cold created a record setting abun-dance of snowfall, which completely paralyzed the construction industry. This had drastic con-sequences on the results for the whole trade. After the three winter months GUS noted a 15-percent drop in construction-assembly production in comparison to 2009. Only in the months that followed did the trade begin to make up its losses. Many companies were also hard hit by the flooding in southern Poland.

Macroeconomic Uncertainty

If the aura proves to be kind, than this year should be better. But such certainty does not exist. Why? The basic risk is the macroeconomic situation in Poland, on which companies do not have an influence. For example, what will hap-pen with state finances over the next two years? After all, not only Poland but also in other Euro-pean Union countries. On this to a great degree is what most investments depend. If the Euro-pean Union budget is committed to saving the

Euro zone, then after 2013 Poland may receive less funding for infrastructure.

Moreover, economists have not yet signalled an end to the world crisis. Indeed, there are those who are muttering about a second wave. The source of the new wave of problems would be an avalanche in the scale of unpaid loans.

Revival of the Credit Market

On the other hand, the probability is quite small that investors constructing or renovating their apartments and homes will be able to discourage a 1 percentage point rise in VAT on materials and services. The economic situation could bring about the elimination of the so-called VAT reimburse-ment on construction materials. The Ministry of Infrastructure is proposing that this type of prefer-ential tax disappear in 2014. It cannot be ruled out that the government will accelerate this decision and cause Poles to sling into constructing and ren-ovating because as much as PLN 16,000 is at stake.

Construction market sprits would be raised above all by banks loosening the screws on credits. The residential construction sector has already begun to awaken from its crisis slumber. Developers have not only started to prepare pre-crisis investments, but are also applying for licenses for further realiza-tions. Material manufacturers and contractors are surely rejoicing the fact that the crisis has not dis-inclined individual investors. Admittedly, GUS has not noted an increase in construction starts, but their numbers have also not reduced. A similar sit-uation can be seen as far as construction permits are concerned.

More and More Orders

TAI Marketing Group and PressInfo.pl have confirmed that last year the number of con-

struction tenders rose in each quarter. They mainly concerned road and electric power engineering works. Precisely energy works will become in the coming years the main driving force for the construction industry. Research company PMR estimates that in the next 10-15 years the construction of new power plants and transmission networks ab-sorb at least PLN 100 billion.

It should come as no surprise that energy con-struction placed 2nd on PMR’s list of the most attractive construction market segments in the perspective of the next 2 years. Without compe-tition are road works. The third most mentioned branch was environmental protection construc-tion, which continues to maintain a relatively high level of attractiveness.

Construction Pessimists on Top

Although PMR observed the previous year an increase in optimism among managers at the 200 largest construction companies, among them there are mainly pessimists. They see more negative phenomena than positive influences on their business. Prof. Zofia Bolkowska from the University of Management and Law in Warsaw believes that there are more complaints than there are reasons to complain. According to her, psychological factors have a great influence on how the economic situation is perceived.

However, this does not mean that companies do not have problems. The most often made complaint concerns bureaucracy. What is in-teresting is that business owners in public often assure that competition is good both for companies and the market. Meanwhile, in PMR research they listed it as a factor that obstructs activities. This is because the conse-quence of increased competition is the lower-ing of prices, which – as companies claim – is often imposed on them by investors. Another indication that things are not rosy in the trade are payment obstructions.

Analysts from Home Broker admit that the lack of clear progress in the construction industry has an effect on the perception of companies in the trade held by market investors. Last year the WIG-Construction index, which is comprised of 31 companies, earned less than the broader Warsaw stock market (WIG). Even weaker during this time were developers. ■

We are living in times of global uncertainty – claim economists. Construction is one of those industries in which its effects are be-ing most painfully felt. Global warming is increasing the frequen-cy of extreme weather phenomena, which drain the pockets of many companies. So how does one operate in such conditions?

Interview with Mr PIOTR STYCZEŃ, Undersecretary of State in the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure

Energy-saving – the present time

requirement

■ Energy-saving architecture is becoming more and more popular. Is it only a fashion or the requirement of the future?

Energy-saving architecture is not only more and more popular, but it is becoming a standard prac-tice. This fact results from the conditions which must be met in Poland by all the objects cov-ered by the Building Law and its implementing regulations. We already have a fashion to show how little energy is needed to operate a build-ing or a flat. The energy-saving architecture is definitely not the requirement of the future – it is already the requirement of the present time. Fulfilling of this requirement is currently taking place in the projects that are just being started or in the projects that involve modernization of the already existing objects. In addition, there are public funds available for improvement of the fixed property energy-saving condition – for instance through the renovation programmes, thermomodernisation programme, and in some portion, also through the expense compensation premiums. Such funds become impulses that lift up “good practices” – the investment projects and initiatives of the investors who are willing to ex-ecute the investment projects, not only correctly, functionally and in conformity with the stand-ards, but also to achieve measurable benefits in operation of such objects. Today, energy-saving building projects should most visible where pub-lic investments are under execution, run by the lo-cal self-governments. Such building investments should play the role of a good example and sup-port – in order to make behaviour of the investors a trend, as far as energy-saving is concerned, on the specific area, in a particular commune.

■ What are the initiatives that are undertak-en or planned to be undertaken by the Min-istry of Infrastructure in order to encourage people in Poland to build in compliance with the energy-saving technologies?

It should be emphasized, that such initiatives are not only the domain of only one ministry. This is what the whole government worries about. These initiatives include the works conducted by the ministers of economy, environment, interior and administration and by the General Inspec-tor of Building Control. The initiatives which are

INTERVIEW

executed by the Ministry of Infrastructure can be treated as complementary works over the entire area where the state affects the sphere of archi-tecture based on the energy-saving technologies. First of all, the Minister of Infrastructure proposes solutions based on the act that supports thermo-modernisation and renovation works. Secondly, he places in his budget, the agreed upon package of financial means, intended for the supporting the energy-saving building projects - in particu-lar for the thermomodernisation, and also stimu-lates progress in scope of the practically applied energetic standards. We have proposed some regulations that promote higher degree of the energy-saving than it results from the implement-ing regulations to the Building Act – for example in the package relating to public building, and also municipal and social housing construction – where the investor who wishes to obtain sup-port from the state budget may cause toughen-ing of the standards relating to energy-saving in the buildings, and in such a way obtain additional points applied in the procedure of choosing the best applicants.

The other initiatives, which can be undertaken by the Minister of Infrastructure, will be based, among the others, on the execution of the hous-ing industry supporting programme, which – pro-vided it obtains permission of the government – will be subjected to the assessment by deputies, because it is the response to the Parliament reso-lution of 19 February of this year.

■ Slow-down in the economy affected the building industry in a particular way. Do we know when the sector forgets the crisis?

Slow-down in the economy did not affect the building industry in particular way –the sector itself also perceives the problem this way – and we should rather evaluate this slow-down by the situation in the entire economy. There are two ba-sic aspects related to the situation in the building industry, which make it possible to restore posi-

tion of the building industry in the entire econo-my. First of all, the building industry continues to be the main beneficiary consuming the European resources and funds from the public budget. The funds for the infrastructuraI investments and ob-jects executed in the communes maintain a pros-perous economy first of all for the contractors of such investments. Secondly, in the housing con-struction – except for a period of time when the number of started building projects was reduced – we now have the situation of relatively easier re-construction of the investment potential. Among the other reasons, it is related to the fact that we have not accelerated the performance in hous-ing construction excessively, and we have not overheated the prosperous economy, which took place in years 2007-2008. On the other hand, the government – being aware that the possible sur-plus of flats should be consumed by the demand – sustained, and even strengthened its activities – e.g., the program “Family on its own” - which took over that surplus. The demand was strengthened basing on the credits granted by commercial banks, the repayment of which is being co-fi-nanced from the budget sources. Of course, the sector should not forget about the crisis. It is not so, that the crisis phenomena in the market econ-omy cannot occur, or that some slow-down in the sector is not foreseeable for those who are func-tioning within the sector. I would only mention, that the reactions, but also the crisis phenomena themselves, which had partly negative effect on the construction industry in the past, are entirely different than those that took place at the turn of last century, i.e., between the years 1999 and 2002. It was then, when the building industry indeed suffered substantial collapse in execution of the investment projects. Today, we rather deal with flexible reacting, with the ability to apply different types of the investment activities, which are typi-cal to those that had been the basis for meteoric success of particular companies, or even a part of the sector – when the building industry indeed was cutting off high rent from the economical development of the whole Poland. ■

Energy-saving architecture is not only increasingly popular but becomes the principle.

Construction fair, taking place in January in Poznań, will be of extraordinary, jubilee nature. The professionals in this branch are going to meet in Poznań for the twentieth time to partici-pate in the biggest construction fair in our part of Europe. Numerous attractions are awaiting the visitors: special exhibitions, interactive shows, specialized conferences as well as – which is the most important – nearly one and a half thou-sand companies presenting their latest offers for construction industry in their stands.

Jubilee a magnet

Although construction industry business outlook does not pamper entrepreneurs, the interest in participation in jubilee edition of Budma fair (11th – 14th January 2011) is ex-

tremely big and it is known as early as today that January edition will be much greater than this year’s. Many companies which have not presented their offer at Budma fair yet applied for participation in the fair. Tradition-ally the representation of market leaders will be substantial.

Increase relates to nearly all construction in-dustry branches. For instance, the exhibition of wood joinery will be presented in a spectacular way. The most significant door manufacturers (among others Classen, DRE, Invado, Pol-Skone, Porta), window manufacturers (among others Drutex, Fakro, Okpol, Pozbud, Rotofrank and Thermoplast), blind manufacturers (among others Alukon, Anwis, Bamar-Pol, Dormax, Luxan, Portos, Somfy and Vertex) as well as

gate manufacturers (among others Dan Doors, Efferts, Normstahl-Polska, Wayne Dalton and Wiśniowski) will take pride in their products.

Budma Fair is an event of distinctively inter-national nature. As in previous years, the per-centage of international companies among exhibitors will be very high – 30 per cent. Joint national speeches under the auspices of inter-national governmental and economic institu-tions will be organized by Austria, Belgium, Belarus, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Spain, Romania and Italy.

Build in an energy-saving, innovative and safe way

During next year’s edition the layout will be changed and the scope of exhibitions will be enhanced. The subject matter of the fair will include all stage of the construction project execution – from designing, earth works and construction equipment at the site, struc-tural elements, walls and fronts, ceilings, floors, wood joinery, doors, roofs, construc-tion chemistry and bathroom ceramics to finishing systems and building management

How to build a house, the heating of which will not cost a fortune? Or an intelligent building which will close roll shutters itself, turn on intimate light in a living room, put on romantic music? Or a wooden cottage which will enchant us with the climate of pine forest every day? – the coming edition of BUDMA International Construction Fair will give answers to these questions.

Budma 2011a jubilee

Sustainable development in construction industry

Bearing in mind the problem of decreasing resources of our plant, with simultaneous constant increase in its population, it is understandable that the idea of sustainable development constitutes one of major areas of interest of international community and is considered a route marker, in accordance with which progress in all fields of human activity should take place.

Sustainable development is a task of building a number of balances at various levels. The most general understanding relates to: society, environment and economy. With reference to construction industry it relates to holistic approach to environmental impact during the life cycle of construction facility existence (LCA – Life Cycle Assess-ment). Sustainable construction means new challenges in the scope of designing structures with the consideration of its durability as well as methods of its mainte-nance, upgrading, repair and demolition.

The implementation of the principles of sustainable development in a company involves measurable benefits. Taking advantage of the potential held, consisting of research background, know-how and many-year experience of experts, contact with institutions influencing con-struction market in Poland and the EU, Building Research Institute prepared the offer of services including the sup-port for entrepreneurs’ actions for the benefit of sustainable development and confirming their achievements in this respect. The offer of the Institute includes: certification of construction goods for the EKO-ITB marking, goods environmental declarations according to LCA, verification of environmental declarations submitted by the manu-facturer, certification of environmental management systems, building sustainability assessment system and ex-pertises in the scope of building energy efficiency, product thermal insulation, acoustics, indoor air quality etc.

systems. The aforementioned systems will be presented, among others, at the Bud-Show exhibition known from previous editions. Within the framework of this show, an “in-telligent house” equipped with state-of-the-art solutions in the scope of computer supported electronic control will be created from scratch in one of the pavilions.

Next year’s special exhibitions are closely connected with the leading theme of Bud-ma 2011 Fair „Sustainable construction – energy saving – innovation – safety”. Due to expected significant increase in electri-cal energy costs, as well as pronounced EU policy regarding the reduction of electri-cal energy consumption and the emissions of greenhouse gases, both the exhibition and the fair agenda will be focused, to a large extent, on one of the elements of sustainable construction, namely energy saving. Much attention will be devoted to modern thermal insulation materials and technologies. Energy-saving technologies will be discussed, in even wider scope than this year, during Energy-Saving – Passive Construction Forum and the special exhi-bition accompanying it. Moreover, for the first time at Budma fair, the possibilities of obtaining energy for heating houses from renewable sources will be presented in such a complex way. Manufacturers and distributors of solar collectors, heat pumps and equipment using geothermal energy will present their offers. Special exhibition “The Village of Wooden Hous-es”, connected with sustainable construc-tion will present the latest technologies used in this more and more popular kind of construction.

Set to work on your knowledge

Budma 2011 Fair will be accompanied by an extremely extensive programme of events. A few dozens professional conferences will take place during the four fair days. The debate on sustainable construction in the European Union and Construction Engineer-ing Days devoted this year to the issue of Eu-rocodes and construction after floods show the great promise. The Architecture Day, the special guest of which will be the honoured Finnish designer Rainer Mahlamäki, will be an

unquestionable hit of the extensive package of events for architects. Numerous presenta-tions, workshops and shows at special space such as e.g. space for architects Archispace along with effective designing Academy, roofing art shows, Modern Carpenter’s Work-shop, Building with No Barriers, Floor Salon, construction ceramics exhibition or stone in construction will take place. Budma will also be the place of competition for the best craftsmen. 4th Polish Tiling Competition and the competition for the title of the „Capital of Polish Parquetry” will be organized within the framework of the fair. For the 6th time CBS – Sports Facilities, Amenity Areas, Wellness & Spa, being the biggest in Poland fair devoted to sports construction branch will take place within the framework of Budma Fair. Within the framework of CBS, manufacturers and distributors from sports construction and amenity area sector as well as manufacturers of materials, equipment and technologies applied in sports, amenity and tourist facili-ties as well as wellness and spa facilities will present their products and latest material, technological and structural achievements.

And for the second time WinDoor-tech Fair of Machines and Components for Window, Door, Gate and Facade Production, organ-ized in bi-yearly cycle, will take place during Budma. Theme scope of WinDoor exhibi-tion comprises, among others, structural systems, profiles, semi-finished goods, glass materials and products, construction hard-ware, fixing technology, protections, ma-chines, equipment and devices as well as services. ■

Fair range of subjects will cover all stages of the construction investment implementation.

For several years the attention of visitors to the January construction fair in Poznan has been drawn by the unique on a European scale special exposition Wood House Village.

Forum participants will get acquainted with buildings that to date have been successfully realized using these types of technologies in various European countries, as well as their technical conditions. Also presented will be financial support available for energy-effi-cient construction. Today almost everyone can build to an energy-efficient standard, including newly constructed and modern-ized structures, as well as multi-family resi-dences, communal dwellings, offices, shop-ping centres, hotels, schools, sports halls, swimming pools, and industrial buildings. Proof of the topicality of energy-efficient construction is the first edition of the forum, which will be held during BUDMA 2010 and has already attracted an exceptionally large mass of participants.

Energy-efficiency is one of the main themes of BUDMA 2011. The latest solutions relating to energy-saving construction technologies will be presented during a special exposition of companies, as well as a two-day seminar series and presenta-tions at the Energy- Efficient and Passive Construction Forum.

The traditional, ecological construction material that is wood is experiencing its Renaissance. The great interest in the usage of wood in modern construction – especially among private inves-tors – is reflected by expositions and events at BUDMA 2011.

Contributing to the dynamic growth of energy-efficient construction in the world is the need for environmental protection and high energy costs. The most energy in traditional construc-tion is used in heating. For this reason specialists for many years have been working on improving the thermal insulation of buildings and reduc-ing heating costs. At the end of the eighties Dr. Wolfgang Feist together with a team of special-ists from Germany’s Residential and Environ-mental Institute have been working on practical solutions to this problem. He has formulated and pioneered standards for passive construction. In passive buildings heat loss is restricted so signifi-cantly that only so-called passive energy sources are needed to equalize it (solar energy penetrat-

ing through windows, and heat created by resi-dents or from household equipment). Only dur-ing freezing cold periods is supplemental heating used – most often heated air circulated through ventilation ducts or heated floors and walls.

The most important goal of energy-efficient and passive construction is the aspiration to achieve the highest warmth comfort through the obtainment of high surface temperature in external building partitions. Throughout the year a passive building assures residents an appropri-ate microclimate, resulting from comfortable warmth and optimal ventilation gained through the constant circulation of fresh air. The lowering of heat energy needs alone is achieved through the application of appropriate heating insulation and heat-protection carpentry, as well as through unique thermal fibres that provide buildings with heat leakproofness. ■

During the upcoming edition one will also be able to see examples of the most modern so-lutions applied in wood construction. Being erected in one of the main fair facilities will be wood houses built using various technolo-gies. Visitors will be able to see for themselves their unique advantages, and feel the distinc-tive atmosphere of their interiors that have a calming effect. Most importantly, buildings made from wood are fully biodegradable and therefore very environmentally friendly.

The Wooden House Association plans to organ-ize at BUDMA seminars devoted to wood con-struction. The preliminary program for this event is comprised of presentations and workshops on the topic of growth of this type of construction in Poland, construction of wood houses from prefabricated materials, and log homes (from

EXPOSITIONS

solid wood and insulated logs), requirements for wooden skeleton constructions, multi-family residences made using skeleton technology, and heat leakproofness of wood houses and insula-tion materials.

Wood in the construction industry certainly does not just function as a construction ma-terial – it is also one of the fundamental fin-ishing materials. The Polish Parquet Lay-ers Association is preparing an interesting conference on the topic of modern parquet laying and workshops for parquet layers, where during spectacular demos by masters of the parquet laying art will share their skills and the secrets of their trade. In cooperation with SPP, a special exposition called Parquet Show will take place.

The exceptionally abundant offers of door and window carpentry manufacturers and distributors will also be presented in January. Among the products to be shown by exhibi-tors are passive windows, which are enjoying ever greater popularity. ■

Building a house we dream about plenty of space, a few bedrooms, a garage and many other amenities. However, the reality is some-times surprising. Large space means higher heating costs, more light switches, windows, a lot of running to check everything before leaving. Added to this there is a burglar alarm, TV set in each room, coffee maker, DVD and a number of other electrical appliances. In a small apartment a glance was enough to check everything, but in a house it re-quires much more time and effort. Even if our living spaces increases, the amount of time we can spend looking after it does not, un-fortunately, change.

But let us return to the starting point, namely building a house. Suppose you have already planned its struc-ture. It is worth considering, however, whether during designing a beautiful shape, the number and size of rooms, type of windows and doors, systems and installations, the functionality of this design has not been forgotten, so that our house is a comfortable retreat and not the pro-verbial „ball and chain”. More attention should be paid to technology and functionality of vari-ous installations. The house can be tamed and adapted to our needs and habits. This virtually lifeless form can become friendly and relieve us of many mundane activities.

The BudShow project at the Budma 2011 will be based on building a smart house designed by the Design Office MTM STYL. The exposition will be accompanied by a series of conferences and lectures on building automatics and contemporary trends in its design and applications. At-tractive formula of the BudShow organ-ized by Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie

and ARDO Market-ing Communica-tions Agency of-fers the exhibitors an innovative and dynamic form of presentation of their products and the visitors can actively partici-pate in the project. Presentation of KNX smart home will be devoted

to three different aspects. The first one is an exhibition „Home Under Construction” - specially prepared cross-sections and in-dividual design elements will help partici-pants see the products and technologies and their proper applications. This will be accompanied by shows of assembling parts supplied by the project partners and commented on by a moderator. The shows will take place several times each day of the fair according to the previously agreed schedule. The last element of this special space will be an exposition of a ready to move in part of the house.

Smart solutions used in the BudShow de-sign will be based on the KNX system. The exceptions are the products supplied by the FAKRO company which uses Z-Wave wireless radio protocol to control their win-dows, external shutters and internal acces-sories that enables forming wireless net-work and controlling FAKRO products with a wireless remote control and in the future via a mobile phone or the Internet.

The walls of the model house built at the BudShow will be built using Porotherm Dryfix system offered by the Polish branch of Wienerberger Porotherm. Dryfix sys-tem is based on using blocks of perfectly smooth, specially polished surfaces con-nected with a specialist foam mortar. The model home will also comprise Terca clink-er bricks and Koramic ceramic roof tiles. The Polish company Elwiz SA will provide some of the warmest windows on the mar-ket - Elwiz energeto. It will be a premiere of a passive window Elwiz-energio passiv. The company Bartosz s.j. will equip the building with in-VENA ventilation system intended for residential buildings, based on an independent mechanical ventilation for each apartment.

The Wiśniowski company will provide ex-ternal aluminum doors of Aluprof-MB 70 system with a coefficient of heat transfer Uk = 1.5 W/m2*K, steel jacket fire doors with a fire resistance EI 60 and automatic garage sectional doors UniPro equipped with a safe system of torsion springs and tilt gate made of galvanized steel sections, filled with gal-vanized steel sheet and profiled. ■

As is tradition, taking place on the second day of the fair (January 12th) will be “Architecture Day”, organized by the Association of Polish Architects (SARP), National Chamber of Architects of the Republic of Poland (IARP) and Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie. This year’s keynote is the for-mal opposition “Low & High Architecture”. The inaugural lecture will be given by one of Fin-land’s most distinguished architects – world fa-mous Professor Rainer Mahlamäki.

During the block devoted to low-rise architec-ture, emphasis will be placed on such issues as

Rainer Mahlamäki – Architecture Day special guest

Traditionally Architecture Day at Budma is an opportunity for meeting the most distinguished personali-ties of the architecture world. In January 2011 one of the most renowned Finnish architects, world famous Professor Rainer Mahlamäki, will be the event’s special guest.

Professor Rainer Mahlamäki has been a Professor at the University of Oulu’s Department of Architecture since 2000. Two years later he was nominated Board Chair of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and has performed the function to date.

Mr. Mahlamäki is the co-owner of Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, established in 1997, where he cooper-ates with another renowned designer: Ilmari Lahdelma. The studio specializes in the design of large and demanding structures – mainly museums and multifunctional cultural centres. Outstanding engineering concepts and a perfect understanding of context, both urban and natural, have earned them as many as 27 first prizes in international architecture competitions.

In 2005 Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects won an International Architecture competition for the building of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, in which their piece of work was considered the best out of 119 designs presented by domestic and foreign participants. In 2008 the design was granted the prestigious International Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects has been awarded for innovative design approaches many times. Haus-järvi – Residential Home and Health Care Centre was considered the best concrete structure in 1992. The Museum in Vellamo received the award for best steel structure of 2008, as well as first place in the Annual Lighting Contest 2009 in Finland and Colour09 Contest in Finland 2009.

The Finnish architect’s most famous designs include: Lusto – Forest Museum and Information Centre in Punkaharju, Tampere University of Technology, Folk Arts Centre in Kaustinen, Kotka Museum Centre and Nuuksio Nature Centre in Espoo.

the reinterpretation of vernacular architecture in contemporary construction, ecological housing developments, and straw architecture, as well as eco-original architecture. Presented during the session concerning high altitude construction will be the concept of a high-rise building captur-ing water and preventing surrounding areas from becoming steppe-like.

Moreover, the presentation titled “Eco-Archi-tecture. Nature and Technology at the Service of Architecture” will take place. Also during Ar-chitecture Day, awards will be handed-out as

part of the 5th edition of the Maciej Nowicki Competition, organized by the monthly magazine “Architektura i biznes”. The com-petition’s goal is boosting interest among Polish architects in the area of architecture innovation. The most interesting architectural projects, making use of innovative solutions, will be awarded in the competition.

The following day (January 13th), “Public Space – From Idea To Completion” will be the subject of “Urban Planning Day”. The event is being organized by the Poznań branch of the Society of Polish Town Planners (Towarzystwo Urban-istów Polskich), Marshal Office of the Wielko-polskie Voivodeship, and Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie. ■

Definitely, the culture of area development – smooth footways, better suited public transport, but also more easily accessible architecture. Disability tends to be less fre-quently treated as a taboo. More and more often we can see people using wheelchairs, or blind people on a street, at school, or on a bus. Unfortunately, next to the perfectly developed land we can find the absurd bar-riers, of which only a small part was built before 1994. Why does it happen the way it does?

Lack of funds, lack of knowledge

There are many reasons. Lack of funds, too general and imprecise regulations, lack of competent knowledge are only a few of the problems. In West Europe, North America or Australia the process of establishing laws, developing knowledge and consciousness of architects is already in progress since the beginning of the 80s. The American “Americans with Disabilities Act – Stand-ards for Accessible Design” is a document comprising over two hundred pages, which precisely determines the principles for landscaping the accessible area. In many countries there is an obligation that build-ings are commissioned by the accessibility planning specialists. Poland is still far be-hind such standards.

The level of expertise of the issues among architects, investors and contractors is still inadequate. This is why we can so often see inclined planes too steep, stairs without ap-propriate marking, though required by law, errors in the location and selection of outfit for the “accessible” toilets, applying

the Braille markings on the touch panels, where a blind person will be unable to lo-cate the correct pushbutton. These are only a few of the appearing barriers.

Inaccessible area

Another category is made up by the histor-ic objects. In the West it is possible to com-pletely reconstruct buildings such as Louvre in Paris. Ob-viously historic ar-chitecture deserved due respect, how-ever, it must keep pace with the times. In Poland, this way of thinking is still far distant; that is why we are constantly wrestling with the problems of single steps, lack of eleva-tors or too narrow passages in the most important historical objects or areas.

In Poland as much as 5.5 million indi-viduals, thus every seventh of us, are suffering from disa-bility. We have to be

aware that the area that meets the highest global standards is the area still inaccessi-ble not only to the persons with disabilities but also to elder people, children or preg-nant women. ■

The offer of the companies which have their own solutions in scope of the accessible area development can be seen at the Budma 2011 Fair new “A Building

without Barriers” special exhibition.

The Louvre Museum in Paris has been fully adapted to meet the needs of disabled people.

EXHIBITIONS

Sixteen years had passed this year since the day the Building Law was enacted in Poland. This law imposed the obligation that necessary conditions and facilities must be provided to enable disabled persons using public utility objects and mul-tifamily dwelling buildings. What did change since that time?

In many countries there is an obligation to commission the building by the accessibility planning specialists. Poland is still far behind such standards.

Given the scale and complexity of the project, the knowledge of nuclear power plants built so far in the world and the EU is vital to the success of the project. A con-ference entitled „Construction of nuclear power plants in Poland as an opportunity for the Polish construction sector” held on January 12 at the International Construc-tion Fair BUDMA 2011 will be an excellent opportunity to share such information.

At the conference Polish engineers and construction companies will present their experiences related to implementation of nuclear power investments in Europe (e.g.

in the UK, France, Finland and Hungary). Security issues will be discussed based on American, French and Russian experiences. Monitoring rules around the nuclear center will also be presented.

Construction of a nuclear power plant is also a huge logistic enterprise. The confer-ence will provide a simulation of providing accommodation for 4,500 workers building the nuclear power plant within five years, modular construction.

Craftsmen in action

Traditionally, Budma fair will be a com-petition arena of the best craftsmen. The fair will host the fourth Polish Tile Laying Championships. 42 finalists from the whole country, selected during regional qualifi-cations, will enter the championships. The fair also involves competition for the title of “Capital of Polish Parquet Floors.”

Nearly one thousand Polish roofers will come to Poznań in January to learn about the latest novelties in roofing technology. The Congress of Polish Roofers organized by Polish Association of Roofers will be as usually a major event for the roofing in-

dustry and will be dedicated to the most current issues related to the roofing sector. Innovations in the tools and technologies used in the roofing industry will be pre-sented during roofing shows prepared by the Polish Association of Roofers and dur-ing the second edition of the presentation series “Modern Carpenter Workshop” organ-ized by Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie under the title: “New technologies in tradi-tional crafts.”

The Association of Polish Parquet Floorlayers is organizing conferences on modern parquetry and workshops for parquet floorlayers. ■

EVENTS

The space prepared by Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie and PROCAD will perfectly reflect the work specificity of this profes-sional group. Archispace includes the latest information technologies assisting in the de-sign process, a gigantic database of free CAD library and direct contact with the producers of the construction industry in one common space intended for architects, design engi-neers and installers.

The most important and largest compo-nent of the stand and the idea of Archispace Budma 2011 will be the Academy of effec-tive design. This space, offering a dozen or so seats, will host, on each fair day, a number of short “live” trainings on the latest trends and design technologies. Each participant will be awarded an attendance certificate, which will also include a unique access to free online database shows. They will be excellent sup-plementary materials expanding the training scope and allowing the designers to study the discussed issues in depth.

As in previous years, active designers will have an opportunity to receive a CD, pre-pared especially for BUDMA and distributed exclusively during the fair. The CD will include, among others: a library of 40 thousand CAD drawings (digital models of specific products of the construction industry used in Polish investment projects), information and pres-entation materials, the Designer’s Assistant – that enables management of CAD drawings libraries, offers a library of typical 3D draw-ings, and training materials “First project” for selected CAD systems.

ARCHISPACE is also a place of building relationships between designers and manufacturers working in the construc-tion industry. Manufacturers’ consulting desks will provide an opportunity to learn about new products on offer, but first of all they will offer a possibility of using virtual models of specific products directly in con-struction projects. ■

Academyof effective design

Designers are some of the most important elements of the building industry. For some years Budma Fair has offered them a special place called Archispace.

Win a notebook

All participants of the Academy of efficient de-sign will have a chance to win attractive prizes. Every day the guests can win a HP notebook and a few PROCENT cards - cards of PRO-CAD loyalty program with points ready to be exchanged for chosen gifts.

This is of valuable importance for the practition-ers of the trade who are open to the techno-logical improvements in the wood, aluminium and PVC working sectors. Consultants at the stands will be ready to provide you with infor-mation which may turn out invaluable at the moment of decision making concerning the investment projects – in most cases requiring careful and professional background. Howev-er, even the most up-to-date machinery park along with the best tools and competent op-erators shall not be able to guarantee to the company success without the components that allow to manufacture windows, door,

gates and facades which are competitive on the world market. This is why the very im-portant part of the WINDOOR-TECH fair next edition are just the components that allow to execute even the most challenging and ambi-tious projects, as far as both the technical and design features are concerned.

The idea of the event is an alternative promotion of the most up-to-date solutions that allow for the business dynamic devel-opment. Under the “PVC Window Factory … Live” catchphrase, hides the full-dimension, advanced machine park, which manufac-tures PVC windows in real time using the best compo-nents. Techno-

The entire process will be supervised by the project coordinator and technical staff present on the spot.

Already several weeks before the fair will start we can see that the idea to create a separate event for the manufacturers of windows, door, gates and facades, where in comfortable conditions they can meet with their suppli-ers – turned out to be a great success. As the organizers themselves admit – great interest in the participation in the nearest edition of the WINDOOR-TECH fair shows its positive development potential not only according to the increasing statistics figures, but first of all –

due to its professional quality. ■

NEWS

The fast approaching EURO 2012 European Football Championships on the one hand are a great challenge for local governments – while on the other, an exceptional moti-vator to improve infrastructure essential for practising other sports disciplines. The scale of infrastructure shortcomings was so great, that despite a substantial economic growth there is still much to do.

– Before the first whistle sounds at EURO 2012, many football pitches and several important sports centres will be construct-ed or modernized– says Robert Burzycki, Sales and Marketing Director at TAMEX Sports Facilities S.A., a general contractor for sports facilities. – Besides pitches, the sports base in Poland also includes track and field facilities, which in most cases in-volves adapting to PZLA and IAAF require-ments – adds Burzycki.

Everything indicates that the coming years will be marked by the construction of new sports facilities and the modernization of existing ones. Although it is difficult to give the exact amount that has been invested to develop these types of infrastructure during the last several years, these funds are estimated to be several billions.

– Growth of the sports infrastructure sector would not be dynamic if it were not for Euro-pean Union funding – says Norbert Skupiński, Editor-in-Chief of the monthly Sportplus. – A very positive example of investment in this sector is the “Orlik” program [football pitches for youth]. It has already opened in excess of 1300 pitches, with over 1000 more facilities of this type to be constructed in the coming 2 years. On the wave of success of the pitch construction program, a new initiative will be launched that aims at an even broader promotion of sports disciplines.

– Currently we are working on a pilot pro-gram titled “Biały Orlik”, which involves the construction of 32 ice rinks throughout the country. They can be temporary ice rinks situ-ated on multifunctional Orlik football pitch-es or permanent ones located directly next to them. – says Jakub Kwiatkowski, Press Sec-retary for the Ministry or Sport.

With Orlik pitches popping up in our neigh-bourhoods and the media reporting many good things about the progress of stadium construction works, we eagerly await swim-ming pools, running tracks, and even mod-ern SPA facilities - often only associated with hotel infrastructure. Nonetheless it is hard to

speak of their coming into being without ap-propriate materials, components and profes-sional “know-how” concerning construction. This type of market potential overview is enabled by trade fairs like CBS (a co-opera-tive initiative between the Polish Sports In-frastructure Club and the Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie), which will be held during 11-14 January in Poznań.

– CBS, where in two pavilions over 100 exhibi-tors will present their offers, has been enjoy-ing a great turnout from the side of trade pro-fessionals linked with the planning, design, construction, modernization, furnishing and management of sports and recreation facili-ties – says Tomasz Stachowiak, CBS Fair Direc-tor. The demand in this construction sector is also shown by the large turnout of individual investors searching for solutions to complete both small undertakings (e.g. home pool or sauna), as well as those more advanced (e.g. SPA salon beside an agro-tourism facility).

By coming to Poznań they will also gain an additional benefit, as running in parallel at the same place and time will be the BUDMA International Construction Fair, presenting the international potential of trade manu-facturers and suppliers in an even broader scope. According to organizers – the up-coming edition of CBS, with its interesting thematic scope and program of professional conferences and workshops, will also lead to the realization of ambitious development plans for Polish sport. ■

Each investment serves to improve exhibitor and visitor comfort, leading to an increase in fair effectiveness. During the opening of the January BUDMA fair, a cornerstone was placed on the spot of the demolished pavil-ion 6B. The facility is now ready. Thanks to the expansion, another modern pavilion with an exhibition area of 10,000 m2 was gained. The next stage of works involves combining pa-vilions 6A and 5 into one complex. Through this a new facility will appear offering an im-posing exhibition area: over 25,000 m2.

The Congress Infrastructure is Growing

Poznań has grown to become one of the most important and largest congress centres in Poland. This has without a doubt happened thanks to the infrastructure and potential of the Poznań Congress Centre. Last year it hosted 1900 congresses and conventions, attended by 475,000 people – nearly double the attendance of two years ago. The Centre’s organizational ambition is to equalize the expanding congress base. Preparation works are divided over two years. Pavilion 8A – part of the so-called “four-pack” complex and where the UN conference took place – will disappear, as it is the least functional pavilion. Pavilion 14B will be mod-ernized. At the same time, the construction crew will begin renovating and modernizing pavilion 15. According to plans, works will be completed in 2014.

Main Entrance Will Get All Decked-Out

This for sure is the most spectacular of the planned investments: a complete reconstruc-tion and modernization of the front walls of

the fair buildings. The design competition for this investment was won by Studio ADS. The gorgeous complex main entrance will run from the current administration build-ing, through the Fair Centre building, all the way to the glassed East Hall. Its shape will be wide and spacious, and it will not block view of the MTP’s sym-bol – the famous fair spire. Placed on its facade will be in-stallations for multi-media projections. And what will be inside? The current functional arrange-ment of the build-ings will change. Appearing in the newly constructed parts will be a glamorous VIP zone: reception hall, club area, conveniently connected with re-maining buildings. The Fair Centre gains more space. Appearing on the floors will be new of-fice space, separated from common areas by glassed walls. The existing lifts will be replaced with panoramic ones. From the conference rooms in the East Hall mezzanine one will be

able to admire a panorama of the city. We will move into the corridors of the glamorous new sections of the MTP complex in 2013.

New IT Project – Unique on a Europe-wide Scale

In September last year visitors were greeted by a new arrangement of registration points in the East Hall and WTC Hall. A novelty was also the professional registration system, based on the reading of bar codes. Bar codes are now found on all documents that authorize admission to the fair grounds – admission tickets, invitations, exhibitor cards, press cards, vehicle entry cards. To get inside, it is enough to scan a code on a reader at a gate. Formalities have also been reduced through the launch several months ago of www.mtp24.pl, which is intended for fair guests. One can use it to

buy electronic tickets or in advance fill-out and print registration questionnaires – re-quired to buy a ticket at the ticket office or, if someone has de-cided to pay through the Internet, buy an electronic ticket.

Since January MTP has been providing wire-less Wi-Fi Internet services for participants of fairs and events organized on the fair grounds. This is not a unique service, but it has important features – it is available to clients on every single square meter of fair ground, has guaranteed high capacity, and without difficulty serves thousands of par-ticipants simultaneously. ■

Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie continuously succeeds in large scale organization challenges. Each year the MTP Congress hosts nearly 1900 events of various types. It was here in 2008 that the UN World Climate Change Conference was held, in which 10,000 guests participated. In December 2009 the fair grounds were filled with 30,000 participants of the Taizé European Youth Meeting. On a similarly large scale are investments in the fair’s in-frastructure. In 2010 alone PLN 50 million are being allocated for it in the budget.

Investmentboom at the fair

The new pavilion 6A has over 10,000 square metres of exposition space.

Investments in the fair grounds are happening almost without end. In 2010 alone PLN 50 million is being allocated for it in the budget.
