Overview From Liszt, Lehár, Bartok and Chopin to modern-era performers such as Leopold Stokowski, Andris Nelsons, Emanuel Ax and Arthur Rubinstein, Central Europe and the Baltic States have a fine musical heritage. Inspired by the landscape and traditions of the region, this musical history is also influenced by the neighbouring Germanic and Russian worlds. Take a trip from Budapest through the Tatra Mountains and north to the shores of the Baltic, enjoying performances at a range of historic venues in Hungary, Poland and Latvia, culminating with three performances at the prestigious Riga Opera Festival. Starting in Budapest, the capital of Hungary situated on the Danube River, the tour takes you through Slovakia for an overnight stay, then to Krakow and Warsaw before concluding with four nights in Riga on the Baltic coast. These countries have a long, shared history, sometimes united under the aegis of a multicultural empire, but at others bitterly divided by turbulent politics. Nevertheless, their distinct identities have been preserved and are expressed through their art, architecture and musical traditions. We enjoy performances in Budapest, Krakow, Warsaw and Riga and visit major monuments to the region’s great composers, including the Chopin Monument in Warsaw – where we enjoy a concert in the park. We round out the tour with fine dining, visits to hidden gems such as the seaside resort of Jürmala, a visit to Empress Elisabeth’s castle at Gödöllö and a special overnight stay in the Tatra mountains of Slovakia.

Your tour leader For over 30 years, Robert Gay has presented music history courses for the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Sydney. Over the same period he has designed and escorted more than 90 musical and cultural tours to Europe and America.

On tour, Robert will provide a thorough introduction to the performances you see, with detailed pre-

performance talks and post-performance reviews. Robert’s approach to music is multi-faceted. First and foremost, he links the music to the biographical, historical and social context in which it was created. Secondly, he explains in plain language technical aspects of the music – how the composer communicates through sound. Finally, as a trained singer who attends dozens of performances each year, he offers great insight into the qualities of the performances you see on tour. Robert’s enthusiasm is infectious, and his skills as a music educator and tour leader are exceptional. Since 2010, he has led tours exclusively for Academy Travel.

“Robert Gay went out of his way to look after the individual needs of group members. A well-constructed itinerary.” Feedback from Robert Gay’s Berlin to Vienna music tour, December 2016.
