The master cabinetmaker listened closely, taking satisfactionfrom skillfully orchestrated sounds which came from hiswood shop. Intonations from each craftman’s task became a

part of the melody–the gentle swoosh of a wooden plank whenpulled from its stack, the intermittent buzz of a miter saw, the softthump as a rubber mallet encouraged a joint. He knew by heart thewell tuned whisper of glaze. Every cabinet became a song; thewooden notes given life by his talented hands. This was KarlGeiger and his legacy.

threw out your back and cannot work well in the kitchen. All of these people with diminished abilities can be morecomfortable in their homes with modifications byThomas G. Wells Construction, LLC.

In business for 25 years, President Thomas G. Wellshas worked on numerous Aging in Place projects. “Agingin Place is not for just people over 65. It is for anyone that

cannot live comfortably with the tradi-tional home layout. A chairlift for some-one who cannot access stairs. Brighterlights for those with diminished eyesight.A doorbell with a flashing light for thehearing impaired. Grab bars placedstrategically around the home for thosenot steady on their feet. And the remodel-ing does not have a commercial or indus-trial look. Many manufacturers are creat-ing products that are beautiful and func-tional,” Wells says.

Servicing Lower and Central BucksCounty, Montgomery County, and areasin New Jersey, Thomas G. WellsConstruction, LLC uses universal designon its work—form, function, beauty, andaccessibility are harmonious. Accordingto Wells, the company has its ownCertified Aging in Place Specialist onstaff—Cathy Pope.

“People in their mid-40s to early 50sare considered the Baby Boomers. Theycall us the Sandwich Generation becausewe have elderly parents to take care of andwe also have children. We are seeingmore and more clients investing inremodeling their homes for aging parents. This way, their loved ones can be moni-tored, and also avoid the expense of seniorliving,” Wells says.

Thomas G. Wells Construction, LLCrecently built an addition to a single-fam-ily home in Newtown. “The daughterand her husband invited her 80-year-oldmother to live with the family. The housewas not large enough—all of the second-floor bedrooms were occupied. Theydecided on an addition on the back of the

house. Now the mother has her own liv-ing room, bedroom, accessible bathroom, and closet. It is located right off of thefamily room. She can be with the family,or have her own privacy,” Wells says.

Aging in Place bathroom remodelingis another popular request by clients.“Whether it is a walk-in shower with ashower bench, non-slip floors, or dozensof other design solutions, we can cus-tomize a solution specific to your circum-stances. We recently finished a two-storyproject on a home in Yardley. The secondstory was extended over the garage. Thismade the two bedrooms on the secondfloor larger. We were then able to put inan accessible bathroom between thosebedrooms. The bathroom features a zerothreshold shower. It does not have a lipyou have to step over. The tile floor of thebathroom is the exact same height as thefloor of the shower,” Wells says.

For a family in PlumsteadTownship, Jarrett Vaughan Builders,Inc. built a high-end kitchen with allnew cherry floors in the house. “Thiswas a traditional development housethat had a fire. We useda computer model to design the projectso the clients could see what it wouldlook like before we started building it.Crown moulding, columns, pilasters, lighting fixtures, and a random patternbluestone floor were incorporated into

Gail Bracegirdle’s studio is located in the large, historic CanalWorks building in Bristol. I come at 10 a.m. sharp and Gail isgraciously waiting for me in the parking lot, so I don’t get lostlooking for her studio. Smiling, she takes me inside the CanalWorks and shows me the wonderful job that developer BernardMazzocchi is doing by preserving this landmark through the cre-ation office and studio space.

Entering Gail’s studio is like entering her mind. Althoughjam packed with the tools and materials of her trade, it is organ-ized and decorated with her own work—some finished and some

in progress. Noticing that I am admir-ing the paintings on the wall, Gail says,“They’re all watercolors, but I like toexperiment with different styles andtechniques.”

And experiment she does. On one ofthe walls is a series of paintings of sockmonkeys that a friend of hers collects andnext to them are some interesting land-scapes and in different spots throughoutthe studio were still lifes of fruit, flowers, and just odds and ends. Besides still lifesthere were landscapes, gardens, and evenabstract pieces.

Looking around I affirm that sheliked still lifes. She mischievously says, “Ihave control over them.” This, of course,is in contrast to the landscapes where

light can change from minute to minute. And light is an important element inGail’s art.

Her subjects, while interesting andvaried, are not what make her paintingsdistinctive. She can paint anything—from something as simple as a sock mon-key, a single flower or a bowl of fruit andmake it a masterful painting. Her per-spective and way she looks at a subject isalways a unique view, but what makesGail’s work particularly interesting is heruse of color.

Color and watercolor are themes thatgo back to Gail’s years at Moore Collegeof Art, where she earned a BFA in textiledesign. She worked in this field for 25years, using color to make designs that

Art Feature h&g_home & garden guide 11/19/12 8:59 PM Page 3

would be printed on fabrics used inhome furnishings. And although shemajored in textile design while at Moore, she took fine art courses. In her water-color class her professor was the well-

know watercolorist Ranulph Bye. Shesays, “People would say to me, ‘Youmean you studied with the Ranulph Bye.’You know how connections fall intoplace in your life.”

Gail says she always liked watercolor.“When I was designing, we worked ingouache, which is opaque watercolor. Thereason we worked in that was that whenwe were printing fabric, we only had acertain limited number of screens orrollers because the color has to be uni-form throughout. I couldn’t work with thewatercolors and the gouache at the sametime. I couldn’t think that way, so when Igot out of school, I stopped working withthe transparent watercolors.”

As things began to change in the tex-tile industry, Gail saw an opportunity toleave textile design and do what shealways really wanted to do—paint. “Asthings began to get more computerizedand changes came into the industry, Iwould have to adapt. But I said, ‘I’ve donethat; I’m moving on to something else.’”

Gail has incorporated some of thethings that she learned as a fabric design-er into her work as a painter. She showedme a box of fabric, which she designedand I noticed her same sensitive eye tocolor. She credits her experience indesigning fabric with the way she thinksabout doing a painting. Of course whenGail first thinks about painting the sub-ject, but she works first with the colorsshe will use. “I do everything with threecolors. I start with three colors. If you getall the colors together and start mixing, you’ll get mud. (This is something Iteach my students.) When I pick threecolors, it doesn’t matter what they are. Ijust mix them and see what kind ofarrangements I get. And if the colorswork for the idea I have for the painting,

then those are the ones I stick with. Ihave an idea of what I need, but I try dif-ferent ones until I get it right.”

Although Gail doesn’t necessarilybegin with the three primary colorsexactly, she explains, “They are all yel-low, red and blue. The blue may be agreen, but I start with three. That’s theway I work out my colors.” Gail admitsthat it is hard sometimes to teach this topeople who do not have a color back-ground as strong as hers. “My under-standing of color was very formalized. Ihad a full year of color theory. I’m a col-orholic.”

When I say thestandard lineabout water-color being anunforg iv ing

medium because you can’t really changewhat you have done, she only agrees withme partially. “There’s some tricks,” shecountered. “It’s different. Some colorsstain and if you use those colors, there isno way you can get them out of thepaper, but lots of colors don’t stain and ifyou plan it, you can just lift them off witha soft wet sponge. The other thing toremember is that it’s just a piece ofpaper. If you don’t like it, use anotherside. And if you really don’t like a paint-ing, what I’ve been doing is cutting themup and making business cards out ofthem by attaching labels.”

Gail says she always wanted to be anartist. Her grandfather was in the textileindustry and he was a partner in a mill inPhiladelphia. Gail sees it as an influence.

Art Feature h&g_home & garden guide 11/19/12 8:59 PM Page 5

Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2013 53

“Even though I was very young, Iremember visiting it with my dad. And itwas there in the back of my mind. Myuncle did design work for him, and Ihave his library.”

Gail likes to do series of paintings. Shehas for example a series of monkey socks, which are stuffed animals made fromsocks to look like monkeys. A friend andfellow artist in the Canal Works collectsthem and she has painted several. Anotherseries are her works on crinkled paper. “Itake a light weight paper. I found out thatworks the best. I soak it and crinkle it—painting on it while it is wet. The fibers ofthe paper break a little and so the paintsoaks into the fibers of paper.” This cre-ates a textured painting.

Gail teaches watercolor painting atArtworks in Trenton. Her class is called

Watercolor Anarchy. Gail enjoys teachingand has taught at several locations. Real estate staging and designing experts can

increase selling price, decrease listing time,

and keep inconvenience to a minimum

The real estate markethas changed dramati-cally. Home inventoryis up. New home andexisting home sales are

down. Competition is fierce. You need toset your home apart.” These are thewords of Kimberly Boyer, DSA,CPCNR, CPIR, CPRES, IDS Affiliateof Kimberly Boyer Interiors. Since 2006,she has been guiding homeowners inproperty makeovers through staging, interior redesign, and color consultation.

Based in Doylestown, Boyer has apassion for decorating and design. “Mygoal is to help you express your person-ality in creating a home interior that suitsyour needs and surrounds you with thethings that you love. It is a privilege forme to come into your home,” Boyer says.

Educated through Temple University, aswell as The Decorating & StagingAcademy, Boyer is certified in real estatestaging and interior redesign.

With real estate staging, Boyer fol-lows a specific process. “I start with anin-home consultation. I start at the curband go through each area of the house, including the front yard, backyard, base-ment, and garage. I assess the propertyon a point system, including appeal, cleanliness, use of space, clutter, odors, and improvements. I look at the housewith a buyer’s eye. I then give the ownershomework, identifying items in need ofrepair, removal, or updating. Once theprep work is complete, the physical stag-ing takes place with placement of furni-ture and accessories. Clients must have a90 percent assessment before going to

market. My goal is to increase selling price, decrease listing time, and keep inconven-ience to a minimum,” Boyer says.

With clients in Bucks County andMontgomery County, Boyer works withbuilders, realtors, and homeowners.Boyer has improved historic homes, aswell as new construction. Her full-serv-ice firm also offers move managementservices for those who want to downsizeor “rightsize,” along with interiorredesign, shopping services, and colorconsultation.

Boyer was chosen to be a set design-er for a $25,000 home technologymakeover sponsored by Verizon FiOS.“A family from Doylestown won thecontest at the Doylestown Arts Festival.I provided the design of two bedroomsinto a jewelry design studio and a homeoffice/recording studio, as well as aredesign of the family room. It was ontelevision, and James Earl Jones came,”Boyer says.

Also in Doylestown, Boyer helpedfour generations living in one household.“The grandmother, mother, daughter, and grandchildren moved into onehome. They brought furnishings fromseveral homes and needed to make thepieces work. I worked on their livingroom, dining room, the grandmother’sroom, and some spaces.” Boyer says.

Boyer recently completed an interiorresign for a Langhorne residence.“According to the client, the living roomwas never used and felt cold and uninvit-ing. They wanted a room that could beused as a reading/music room, and just a

place that felt comfortable in which tohang out. Incorporating only what theclient already owned and using strategicfurniture placement, I was able to meettheir desired needs with great results,”Boyer says.

For homeowners who want to tryreal estate staging, HGTV’s Designed toSell designer Lisa LaPorta offers somestaging tips.

BATHROOMS1. Get rid of grimy bathroom walls

with one part water and one part bleach.Once clean, apply a fresh coat of paint.

2. Scour glass shower doors with onepart muriatic acid and 10 parts water.Scrub well with steel wool.

3. Avoid dated tile by painting it.4. Replace the old vanity with a

pedestal sink.

BEDROOMSA master bedroom should appeal to

both sexes. Get rid of gender-specificfeatures. Paint the walls a neutral colorand choose bedding and accessories thatcoordinate.

KITCHENS1. Stain dated cabinets instead of

replacing them. Complete with somestylish hardware.

2. New kitchen appliances bring highreturns from sellers. Stainless steel mod-

els are popular.3. Fill existing hardware holes instead

of making new, unsightly ones.4. Granite countertops are a big sell-

ing feature.

LIVING ROOMS1. Buyers love built-in bookshelves.

There is a fine line between filling themwith clutter and staging them to sell. Thetrick is to arrange neutral items in clusters.

2. Rip down shabby wood paneling.Fill in the cracks between the panels andallow the filler to dry. Then paint the walls.

3. Fireplaces bring a whole set ofissues. Tone down an overpoweringbrick fireplace with paint. Update an oldfireplace screen. For a fireplace made ofcolored stones, give a good scrubbingwith soap and water. Then use a stonecolor enhancer to polish the stones andmake them shine.

4. Pack up unnecessary items and fur-niture before you show the house. Movethem to the garage or a nearby storagefacility. Buyers want to see squarefootage, not personal belongings.

FLOORING1. Vinyl tile is an expensive way to

update the home. 2. Add drama to old hardwood floor-

ing. Replace damaged boards and givethe floor a good sanding. Stain theboards with a rich color.

OUTDOORS1. A nice outdoor deck can be a big

selling feature, but an old one is a major

liability. Start by sanding the wood, thencover it with a light colored stain for arustic look. Add furnishings for enter-taining.

2. Breathe new life into a worn redbrick patio with a fresh coat of paint.

According to The NationalAssociation of Realtors, a well presentedhome is not necessarily a well maintainedone. The National Association ofExclusive Buyer Agents surveyed itsmembers and found that 82 percent ofrespondents said their buyers are likelyto be distracted by staging. Instead, firsttime buyers should concentrate on suchelements as the floor plan and home’slocation.

Jon Boyd, President of the NationalAssociation of Exclusive Buyers Agents, offers helpful hints for buyer’s reps. “Donot be dazzled by the light. Halogenlights make a room seem large. Thesame is true for torchiere style lamps thatreflect light up to ceilings. Do not letshimmer hide realities. Mirrors and glasstabletops both make rooms appear larg-er. Measure each room to see how big itreally is. Beware of tight spaces. Be surethat the furniture in a room is appropri-ate for the room’s use. Encourage buyersto measure their furniture so that theywill know how much room they need,”Boyd says.

Whether it influences homebuyers orhome sellers, it is clear real estate stagingis a powerful tool in the sale of a home.

Dear Garden Associates, Inc.offers distinctive design, installation, and mainte-

Dear Garden Associates, Inc.recently renovated a property inTinicum Township. “We removed asection of asphalt parking in order toallow space for us to create the plant-ings, wall, and path. The building wasa storage shed converted into a pool-house. We were responsible for thedesign and execution of the plantings, stonework, and lighting. The designcreates spaces for seating to take inviews of the property, as well as path-ways to allow for a more enjoyableaccess to the pool. The plantings, which are designed for year-roundinterest, have a definite focus on colorand fragrance during the pool season. We also are responsible for the ongo-

ing maintenance of this garden,”Dear says.

Dear also mentioned several gar-dens constructed from Tinicum toNew Hope, Bucks County, as well asin Princeton, New Jersey. “We areresponsible for the design and con-struction of vegetable gardens, includ-ing seasonal layout, maintenance, andharvesting. In some instances, we actas “training wheels” to help the clientsalong as they learn how to tend thegardens. Our maintenance team willreplant the gardens during the courseof the year so that there is a constantsupply of food. We tailor what is plant-ed to the taste of the client, and ofteninclude fun things for kids. Fruit suchas strawberries, raspberries, blueber-ries, grapes, kiwi, and orchard fruit areoften a main component of our gar-dens,” Dear says.

Since 1961, the landscapedesigners at Bucks CountryGardens Ltd. have helped

homeowners define their propertyvisions and handle design/buildprojects with comprehensive plans. With clients based in Central andUpper Bucks County, the companyalso has a seasonal store and gardencenter. According to PresidentTom Hebel, their specialty is out-door living spaces.

Recently, Bucks CountryGardens Ltd. was called upon tocomplete the renovation of an out-door living area in BedminsterTownship. This comprehensive proj-ect had been in the planning stagesfor five years. A pending substantialprivate affair was the deadline for theproject. “The project involved theremoval of a 20-year-old deck areaand landscape that had become out-dated and ineffective for the family. The owners also wanted to have useof the area for eight months of theyear, not just for the summer. So it isnot just a swimming pool area. Wetried to incorporate as many ele-ments for the new outdoor living

space—patios, a freestanding fire-place with a covered patio area forboth dining and seating, pool paving, and associated landscape plantings,”Hebel says.

Another project for the compa-ny’s designers was to renovate thegardens associated with theMossRehab area of DoylestownHospital. “The garden was veryindustrial looking. It had to be aes-thetic as well as therapeutic. Wedemolished the existing conditions. There was grading and earth workinvolved. The inviting garden nowincludes a pondless waterfall androlling mounds and berms of lawnarea with boulder outcroppings andspecimen plantings around theperimeter of the space. It is all con-nected through softly curving side-walks. We have created a wonderfulhealing environment,” Hebel says.

“On a Mechanicsville property, abosquet, or grove, of fruit trees wasunder planted with Carex pennsyl-vanica as part of a larger garden. In

the background is a border of hollies, boxwood, hydrangea, daisies, anemone, sage, and calamint. Alongthe edge of the barnyard gardenparterre is an oak timber arbor sup-porting white roses. A mixed border, box hedges and pea gravel paths, allelude to the European garden histo-ry that influenced early gardens inBucks County,” Walter says.

Walter’s Nursery, Inc. also isworking with the Golden PheasantInn in Erwinna to renovate its gar-dens. “The Golden Pheasant Inn’sherb garden sits atop a low wall alongthe towpath of the Delaware Canal. The garden includes oak timberraised beds for the herbs, vegetables, and blueberries. Grill It!

According to the Hearth, Patio &Barbecue Association (HPBA) nearly74 million U.S. households own at leastone. They are used on the popular hol-idays of the Fourth of July, Memorial

Day, and Labor Day, with increasing popularity onThanksgiving. Among owners, the most popularutensils are long handled tongs, cleaning brushes, long handled forks, and long handled spatulas.Popular meats prepared on them include burgers andsteaks, followed by hot dogs and chicken. Introducing… the barbecue grill.

Egg shaped ceramic cookers thatare charcoal fired are known as Kamadostyle cookers. A turkey fryer can befueled by LP gas or electricity. It is filledwith oil for frying, or can be used to boilor steam foods. Charcoal, wood, a com-bination of both, electric, or natural gasor LP can fuel smoker grills, whichcome in numerous configurations. Andthere is the small and lightweightportable grill. Models range from alu-minum throwaway to stainless steel.

Barbecue enthusiasts enjoy stayingon top of the latest trends. According tothe HPBA, consumers are looking foroutdoor cooking units with stainlesssteel refrigerators, bottle openers, bev-erage centers, brick ovens, and othercooking elements.
