waiting for your flight, please have a look around and enjoy some of our amenities and services, including:

• An increased number of flight-information monitors — 27 of them around the airport, both pre- and post-security. The web-based system is constantly updated so that passengers, and those waiting for them, can keep track of their flights.

• Yoga room. On our second floor, this calm and cozy space offers passengers a chance to stretch, meditate or just chill out before a flight.

• Roof garden. Accessible via the elevator or stairs for both travelers and visitors, this pre-security terrace affords a great view of the runways, along with some fresh air and relaxation before the flight.

• Mamava breast-feeding rooms. New mothers can spend private time with their babies in the “pod” in the north terminal or in a Mamava-supported pre-security room.

• Charging stations and free Wi-Fi. Passengers can find dozens of outlets throughout the airport.

• Local art. To make our airport more beautiful, Burlington City Arts curates exhibits of work by Vermont artists in the pre-security gate area of the north terminal, above the escalators and along the Skyway. See details of current artworks on page 29 of this issue.

A bit of AdvicePassengers have likely noticed an increased number of weather-

related flight delays and cancellations in recent years, particularly at larger, busier airports. But sometimes people miss flights simply because they don’t get to the airport in time. Even at a smaller airport like Burlington’s, it’s important to come two hours early so that the airlines and the TSA have adequate time to process everyone. When things get backed up, no one is happy — and those at the end of the line might even miss their flight.

Here’s another tip: Book your departure as early in the day as possible, particularly if your travel plans require multiple stops. Few things are more frustrating than missing your connection! But the earlier you start out, the more options for other, same-day flights you will have.

Unfortunately, we can’t control the weather. But what we can do is make your time at BTV as enjoyable as possible. We’re constantly working to make our airport better, and we welcome your feedback.

QuelQueS conSeilSLes passagers ont peut-être remarqué que les vols retardés ou

annulés en raison des conditions météo sont plus nombreux depuis quelques années, surtout dans les grands aéroports plus achalandés. Il arrive aussi, parfois, que les gens ratent leur avion parce qu’ils n’arrivent pas à l’aéroport à temps. Même dans un petit aéroport comme celui de Burlington, il est important de se présenter au comptoir deux heures à lavance, pour que les compagnies aériennes et les services de sécurité aient suffisamment de temps pour préparer l’embarquement. Quand ça n’avance pas, tout le monde est mécontent, et il se peut même que les derniers de la queue ne réussissent pas attraper leur vol.

Voici un autre conseil : réservez un vol dont le départ est prévu aussi tôt que possible dans la journée, surtout si vous avez plusieurs correspondances. Rien n’est plus frustrant que de ne pas arriver à temps pour le vol suivant! Plus vous décollez de bonne heure, plus vous aurez d’options de vol le jour même.

Malheureusement, nous ne pouvons rien contre le mauvais temps, mais ce qui est de notre ressort, c’est de rendre votre passage à BTV aussi agréable que possible. Nous cherchons constamment à améliorer notre aéroport et vos commentaires sont les bienvenus.

Citizen CiderThis cidery’s friendly tasting room opens to the public every day at noon, with nine ciders on tap. Myer’s Bagel BakeryAt this small café just off Pine Street, a wood-fired oven bakes Montréal-style bagels in flavors from plain to garlic-rosemary. Try them stacked with house-smoked brisket or turkey. The large kitchen, an incubator space for other culinary entrepreneurs, also turns out sweets such as delicate almond cakes and homemade Pop Tarts.377 Pine Street, 802-863-5013

ArtsRiot KitchenA member of the ArtsRiot Kitchen Collective prepares dinner, with cuisines ranging from Malaysian to Ethiopian, Monday through Friday (check the website for schedule). On Sunday, there’s a New Orleans-style champagne brunch. The space also exhibits local artists, presents occasional live music and hosts the wildly popular Truck Stop — with food trucks offering everything from street snacks to local burgers — out back every Friday night, 5-10 p.m.400 Pine Street, 802-540-0406, artsriot.com/kitchen

Burlington’s South End Arts District is located on Pine Street between Main Street and Flynn Avenue. This axis encompasses the greatest concentration of artist studios, galleries and creative-economy businesses in the city. Locals know it as the site of the annual South End Art Hop. That weekend-long celebration of the arts is put on by the South End Arts and Business Association, which is located in the

heart of the ’hood and serves as its ambassador.In recent years, Vermont’s robust food-and-drink scene has embraced the South End, too, turning the corridor into an attraction for locals

and in-the-know visitors. Nothing like great coffee shops, food trucks, bagels, frozen yogurt, locavore lunches, chocolate and a couple of brew-eries — for hard cider and craft beer — to raise the ante in a funky, postindustrial part of town.

The South End was once home to factories that made brushes, cereal, crackers and more. Today, a renaissance is taking place, with this-generation enterprises repurposing old buildings or filling empty lots with brand-new ones. What follows is an arty and gastronomic guide to Pine Street and Flynn Avenue.

Go around to the back on the south side and you’ll see the large space-guy mural next to the S.P.A.C.E. Gallery’s door. On the roof above sits a metal geodesic sculpture. a century ago, Robert Frost wrote many lines of verse near Route 100, a two-lane road that snakes through some of Vermont’s richest back pockets. Today’s poets might be too distracted by the plethora of places to recreate — not to mention pick up a pair of boots, tuck into a plate of hand-

made tacos or sample local brews.The 35-mile stretch of Route 100 is particularly poetic in the fall, anchored by the ski resorts of Sugarbush

on one end and Stowe and Smugglers’ Notch (technically on Route 108) at the other. That’s when the entire landscape seems to exhale a sweet, end-of-summer sigh before surrendering to winter. Postcard-worthy views are everywhere — good luck coming up with new descriptions of Vermont’s famous foliage!

Tired of gawking from the car? Take a hike. Rent a mountain bike. Or just stop for snacks and selfies at a roadside attraction. Ben & Jerry’s, anyone? At the end of the day, the abundance of cozy accommodations insures that you won’t have miles to go before you sleep.

Where To playNamed after a once-illegal trade route between the U.S. and Canada, Smugglers’ Notch is now a state park with 1,000-foot cliffs and steep trails on Mt. Mansfield that connect Smugglers’ Notch ski resort (smuggs.com) to Stowe Mountain Resort (stowe.com). In September and October, the drive on Route 108 through the narrow Green Mountain pass is a thrilling wriggle through foliage. Reconnect to Route 100 in Stowe village.

But first, consider hiking some of the terrain around the gentler Spruce Peak, or tackling the famous Chin atop the 4,393-foot Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s tallest peak. The Toll Road will take you to the summit by car, if you’d prefer to expend your energy mountain biking or trail running at the Trapp Family Lodge (trappfamily.com), where the hills are alive with autumn activities through November.

In the quintessential ski town of Stowe, the 5.3-mile paved Recreation Path traces the West Branch River past picnic spots, shops and restaurants, ending at the Stowe Community Church on Route 100, near the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum (vtssm.com). Find bike rentals at A.J. Ski & Sports (stowesports.com), or head south to discover standup paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking (umiak.com) on the 860-acre Waterbury Reservoir. The most famous fall event in the surrounding town of Waterbury is the Leaf Peepers Half-Marathon in October (leafpeepershalfmarathon.org); register early for the 13.1-mile effort or the 5K race.

After climbing the hills of Duxbury, Route 100 descends into the neighboring ski towns of Waitsfield and Warren, the base camps for Mad River Glen (madriverglen.com) and Sugarbush Resort (sugarbush.com). The truly iron-lunged might consider running or biking straight up Mad River Glen in two fall races staged by the resort, or entering the O2X Summit Chal-lenge (o2x.com) up Mount Ellen at Sugarbush. Both ski areas offer much mellower chairlift rides to the top, along with harvest-cele-brating events such as SIPtem-berfest (September 27), where you can toast the end of Prohibi-tion that opened the Notch.

Where To sTayIf the surrounding mountains along Route 100 are high, so are the thread counts at luxury hotels such as the 300-room, dog-friendly Stowe Mountain Lodge (stowemountainlodge.com), whose Vermont Maple Syrup & Brown Sugar Scrub at the spa is 50 minutes of Green Mountain magic. The recently renovated Topnotch Resort & Spa (top-notchresort.com) and centrally located Stoweflake (stoweflake.com) offer even more pampering at their spas, while the Tyrolean Trapp Family Lodge (trappfamily.com) abounds not only in von Trapp family lore but also in ame-nities such as an on-site brewery and horse-drawn rides.

Right in the town of Stowe, the 1830s-era Green Mountain Inn (greenmountaininn.com) sits on Route 100 within walking distance of galleries and gourmet eateries. In Waitsfield, the Hyde Away Inn (hydeawayinn.com) is an après-ski favorite that has 10 rooms and lower rates during fall foliage, while the Sugar Lodge in Warren (sugarlodge.com) is a pumpkin’s throw from all the area’s activities.

Higher-end accommodations near Sugarbush include the slopeside Claybrook (sugarbush.com) and the Pitcher Inn in Warren (pitcherinn.com), where 11 architect-designed rooms and suites feature themes such as “School” and “Hayloft.”

The area offers dozens of other hotels, motels, inns and bed-and-breakfasts — something for just about every budget. But if you’re planning a trip during peak foliage season, book those rooms early.

Where To shopMany visitors from out of state envy the beautiful Green Moun-tains, but they might not know they can shop Green Envy. That’s

the name of a Stowe women’s fashion boutique (vermontenvy.com) that focuses on a different kind of “green” — think sustain-able fabrics. Find accompanying footwear at Well Heeled (well-heeledstowe.com), which also sells clothes and accessories in an antique farmhouse, just off Route 100 on Route 108, aka the Moun-tain Road. The Stowe Mercantile (stowemercantile.com), mean-while, is the country store that Vermont visitors dream about, carrying such items as Elmore Mountain goat’s-milk soap, Hatley moose pajamas, penny candy and fudge by the pound.

Speaking of sweets, look for the artisanal kind at Laugh-ing Moon Chocolates (laugh-ingmoonchocolates.com), where handmade truffles and salted caramels sit alongside Halloween marshmallow pops. Longer-lasting souvenirs can be found on the walls of numerous venues in Stowe, including the West Branch Gallery & Sculpture Park (westbranchgallery.com), Green Mountain Fine Art Gallery (greenmountainfineart.com) and Helen Day Art Center (helenday.com). Find high-quality crafts and more at Artisans’ Gallery in Waitsfield (vtartisansgallery.com) and the Parade Gallery in Warren (paradegallery.com). The latter is near the famous Warren Store (warrenstore.com), which carries just about everything, from lunch to locally made jewelry, from T-shirts to a great bottle of wine.

The Saturday Waitsfield Farmers Market (waitsfield-farmersmarket.com) is a bigger affair, with dozens of vendors selling everything from grass-fed beef and heirloom tomatoes to kombucha and quilts. There’s even a massage station to soothe rubbernecking tourists taking in the treats along Route 100.

Along Route 100’s central cor-ridor, visitors hungry for a taste of the Green Mountains can sample some of the state’s finest restaurants, farmers markets, breweries and distilleries. And, of course, one very special ice cream factory.

Agricultural celebrationsWhether you’re watching pumpkins sail through the air or attempting to navigate a sea of cornstalks, harvest happenings in Stowe make for a memorable autumn. Squashes are prolific in the garden, but they reach new heights at the Vermont Pumpkin Chuckin’ Festival. Competitors craft modern versions of medieval trebuchets and launch orange orbs hundreds of feet at this high-flying event. Live music, a chili cook-off and kids activities round

out the fun. All who wander are indeed lost at the Percy Farm Corn Maze. Participants can take an easy or challenging route through this maze of maize that stretches over eight acres. Burlington City Arts curates art exhib-its at the airport in three areas: the Skyway, the area above the escalator

and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to have a look around!

During September and October in the Skyway, artists Jay Giroux and Scott Campbell present their mixed-media col-laboration “ADog for Life — an Homage.” The graffiti-style work is dedicated to beloved Burlington DJ Andy Williams, aka A-Dog, who died of cancer this past year. Michael Farnsworth’s color photographs hang on the opposite wall in an exhibit titled “Visual Quilting.”

In the Gates 1-8 area, Louise Arnold shows oil landscape paintings.

In October and November, the Skyway and Gates area will feature black-and-white landscape photography by Gary Hall and watercolors by Maurie Harrington, respectively.

For all three months, Elizabeth Nelson’s acrylic abstract paintings can be seen over the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step!

Most of these artists live in Vermont. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their individual websites.

The takeoff of an F-16 fighter jet is sure to catch the attention of anyone watching from the terminal at Burlington International Airport. The spectacle is even more imposing when viewed

from BTV’s control tower. And a visiting reporter seeing the airfield from that lofty perspective is altogether awed when four of the mili-tary planes shoot up into the Vermont sky in rapid succession.

To Joe Payne, however, that’s a routine sight — all part of his day’s work as manager of the 21 controllers who take turns guiding aircraft into and out of BTV. Payne, 54, has been involved in air-traffic control for 32 years, the past seven in Burlington. The trim, relaxed Georgia, Vt., resident reflected on his career in an interview two months before his scheduled retirement.

How did you get started?I graduated from college — Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania — in 1981, just when the controllers went on strike. [Then-president Ronald Reagan fired all those who refused to return to work, opening up 11,000 positions around the country.] I’d always been interested in aviation, and I met the educational requirements for one of those jobs.

What was the training like?At that time, you were sent to Oklahoma City for four months, with the last six weeks spent doing intense, simulated problems. You had to bring in planes from all directions without using radar in the approach. I got through that and was assigned to the airport in White Plains, N.Y.

that’s a suburb of new York city.Yes, it was a busy little airport, mostly with corporate jets. After that, I worked for 20 years at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton [International] Airport [in Pennsyl-vania] as a controller, staff specialist and supervisor. I was then in Savannah [Ga.] for a while before applying for the job here. I had visited Burlington and knew it was a neat little town.

Air-traffic control is considered the most stressful job. is it?It can be pretty stressful, but I’ve been fortunate never to have worked at an airport like Kennedy [John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, N.Y.]. At the places where I have been, it can get intense quickly, but it will last for only a short period.

that happens here?We don’t have anything like the number of arrivals per hour of Kennedy airport. But there can be days when you have the flight school here practicing procedures, and maybe you’ll have five regular arrivals scheduled, and at the same time the Air [National] Guard wants to come in. It can get stressful, but only for about 15 minutes.

You’ve been doing this a long time. there must be job satisfaction, too.That comes from realizing you’re a public servant providing an important safety service for the community. That’s the more altruistic view. The personal satisfaction comes when you’re having one of those 15-minute periods of in-tensity and you know you’ve handled it successfully. The endorphins are really going off then. Also, I get a lot of satisfaction from helping younger people coming into our profession and seeing them do well.

What’s the worst experience you’ve had on the job?I’ve never worked an aircraft accident that involved fatalities, but I was in the building in Wilkes-Barre in the late ’90s when one occurred, and I relieved the controller who had been talking to the pilot last. An instructor and student who were practicing touch-and-goes were killed when their plane made a sharp turn as it was heading for the runway. It came in on its wing and went down.

I don’t have nightmares about it anymore, but I have lost sleep over it, even though I wasn’t in the tower.

it seems there are more air-travel delays these days, maybe because there’s more traffic.There’s actually less private traffic now. Recreational pilots used to talk about getting a hundred-dollar hamburger — flying someplace, eating a burger and flying back. Now it’s a $250-to-$400 hamburger, because the costs have all gone up. Fewer people are doing that. Delays typically come when an airport has too many arrivals to deal with. Takeoffs of planes heading to that airport will be delayed, because the thought is that it’s safest for a plane to be held on the ground. Safety is always our bottom line.

vous faites ce travail depuis longtemps; il doit vous apporter de la satisfaction aussi.Je sais que je fournis un service important à la collectivité sur le plan de la sécurité. C’est une façon plus altruiste d’envisager ce travail. La satisfaction personnelle, je la ressens quand je traverse un de ces quarts d’heure très intenses en étant con-scient après que je m’en suis bien tiré. Les endorphines jouent alors vraiment leur rôle. J’éprouve beaucoup de plaisir aussi à aider des jeunes à débuter dans la profession et à les voir bien réussir.

Quelle a été votre pire expérience au travail?Je n’ai jamais travaillé dans un contexte d’accident d’avion où il y a eu des morts, mais j’étais à l’aéroport quand il en est sur-venu un à Wilkes-Barre à la fin des années 1990, et j’ai pris la relève du contrôleur qui avait été le dernier à parler au pilote. Un instructeur et son élève qui faisaient des exercices de posé-décollé ont été tués après que leur appareil eut fait un virage brutal alors qu’il s’approchait de la piste d’atterrissage. L’aile a touché le sol et l’avion s’est écrasé.

Je ne fais plus de cauchemars à ce sujet, mais ça m’a déjà empêché de dormir, même si je ne me trouvais pas dans la tour.

il semble qu’il y ait plus de retards d’avions aujourd’hui, peut-être à cause de l’augmentation du nombre de vols.En réalité, il y a moins de vols privés maintenant. Les pilotes amateurs parlaient autrefois du hamburger à 100 $ : ils allaient quelque part en avion, mangeaient un hamburger et retournaient à leur point de départ. Aujourd’hui, le hamburger revient plutôt à 250 $-400 $, car les coûts ont tous augmenté. Les personnes qui pilotent par plaisir sont donc plus rares. Les retards s’expliquent en général par le nombre trop élevé d’arri-vées. Le décollage des avions est alors à destination de cet aéroport est retardé, car on juge alors qu’il est plus sûr qu’ils restent au sol. C’est toujours la sécurité qui prime.
