INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGYDeemed University under Section 3 UGC Act 1956

Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) is a premier

institute in chemical technology situated in the heart

of Mumbai. Live interaction with the Chemical

Industry blended with brilliant history of top

academic performance has served to earn everyone's

admiration. The institute has dealt efficiently various

techno-scientific problems for many years. It has been

grooming and motivating students to become pioneer

in their respective fields. ICT's tradition of excellencehas been kept by number of first generation

entrepreneurs, academicians and giants of Indian

chemical industry like Prof. M.M.Sharma, Mr.

Mukesh Ambani, N.H. Sekhasaria to name a few. The

outstanding achievement of qualified faculty and

motivated students body stands testimony to high

academic standards of the institute. The institute has

received many citations and award of excellence. One

of the main features of ICT is its strong educationalinfrastructure. ICT provides its students with all

facilities and atmosphere required for a complete

learning experience. ICT has now grown to be a

deemed university devoted to training, research, and

industrial collaboration in chemical engineering and

    technology, in the country.

ICT has brought kudos to the state of Maharashtra,

despite being at a disadvantaged position with

reference to other technological institutes of national

importance, particularly the IITs, IISc, ISERS,NISERs and Central Universities. Its stellar

performance is reflected in the following:

    1. MHRD had evaluated all deemed universities in

the country in 2009 and granted A grade to 38

universities among 135 deemed universities.ICT is

rated as Number OneDeemed University with A

grade. It is the only one among 4 in Maharashtra

State, the other 3 being centrally funded TIFR, TISS

    and CIFE.

    2. The ICT has also been rated as Number One

Institute by NPIU among 127 TEQIP fundedInstitutes, all over India, in October, 2010.3. Biospectrum magazine in August 2010 has alsorated ICT's programme as Number One among allbiotechnology programmes in the country and the firstprize was bestowed on 17th December at Bangalore.4. A survey was published by Professor JudeSommerfeld of Georgia Tech., USA showing that theICT is Number One Institute in India far ahead ofseveral others including IITs, and it is also in top 10 inthe world in Chemical Engineering. This rank has

been maintained since 1970s.5. Very recently the UGC decided to recognize

faculty who have supervised as single guides at least

15 PhDs. The ICT has a record of 11 faculties who

qualified for special grants. The Director (Vice

Chancellor) Professor G. D. Yadav, is the topmost

among all academics with supervision of 61 PhDs.

and 58 masters degree holders. He is the only serving

faculty in the State to be a Fellow of the TWAS- the

Academy of the Developing World, Trieste, Italy,

    including Fellowship of INSA.

    DEPARTMENT OF FIBRES AND TEXTILE

    PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT

    Prof. (Dr). Ravi V. Adiverakar

    Head of the Department

The Textile Department, over decades has proved to be the most preferred

destination for aspiring textile technologists from across the country. The

department consistently attracts the finest faculty and the best of students

for its Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral programmes. In this

new era of globalization, industries plan to leverage their competitiveadvantage for sustainable growth leading to quantum leaps in the

economic development of the nation. Keeping this in focus, we at

Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), since inception (1934), nurture

the budding technologists and enlighten potential leaders, shaped by its

    Vision, Mission and Values.

The Department of Fibres and Textile Processing Technology has

continually re-invented itself in terms of academic programmes and

research infrastructure for the pursuit of technological excellence.

Students are not only exposed to the core disciplines of textiles processingbut also fibre manufacture, dyestuff and specialty chemical

manufacturing. The presence of world class facilities, vigorous institute-

industry collaborations, interdisciplinary research collaborations and

industrial training opportunities help students of ICT to excel and be

ahead in the competitive professional environment.

In the last seventy seven years, Department of Fibres and Textile

Processing Technology has produced many illustrious alumni, whose

contributions at national and international levels have been significant.

The alumni of our department are often sought after for coveted positionsin the realm of business, academics and research.

We highly value our partnership with recruiters, alumni and friends of

Institute of Chemical Technology and remain committed to making your

recruiting experience productive and positive. I invite the recruiting

organizations and graduating students to find the best match between their

    needs and capabilities.

    Wish you all the best!

    DEPARTMENT OF FIBRES AND TEXTILE

    PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY

It was about 75 years ago that the Textile Industry was progressing in-full swing in city like

Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. Many other industries were not even born, in that pre-independence era.

It was the time, Sir Vitthal Chandavarkar was V.C. of University of Mumbai and also the Chairman

of Mill Owners Association. He and his industrialists friends donated 200 lakhs for creation of an

educational and research institute catering to the need of Textile industry and that's how this UDCT,

then called as University Department of Chemical Technology, under the wings of Mumbai

University, was established with two disciplines: Textile Chemistry and Chemical Engineeringoffering a 2 year degree course post B.Sc. chemistry, called as B.Sc.Tech. A number of new

disciplines of chemical technology, pharmacy, and biotechnology were opened up over the years as

per the need of the nation and all these various technological disciplines have played a paramount

role in building the respective industry in the country. Most of the Professional Bodies of the

Technocrats of these disciplines, even today operate from the portals of excellence of UDCT.

Thus the Department of Fibres and Textile Processing Technology (FTPT), formerly known as

Textile Chemistry section has the unique distinction of being one of the two disciplines (other being

Chemical Engineering), with which this institution- ICT (formerly UDCT) started in the year 1934.

The Department conducts B.Tech course with an intake capacity of 34, which is highest among allthe B.Tech courses of ICT.

The course involves study of chemistry and manufacturing of Fibres and Textile, their chemical

processing such as bleaching, dyeing, printing and finishing. It further encompasses the study of

chemistry as well as application of various kinds of chemicals, dyes, thickeners, and finishing

auxiliaries which are used in chemical processing of textile fabrics and garments. Textile chemistry

also involves knowledge of green chemistry, biotechnology and nanotechnology with special

reference to chemical processing of textile.

The post graduate courses of M. Tech. and Ph.D. (Tech.) attract a large number of students and so

far more than 2250 graduates and 500 postgraduates have passed out from this Department. The

faculty of the Department has good interaction with the industry. A number of industries have been

benefited by the technical advice given by the faculty. There have been a number of industrial and

governmental research projects in which problems of mutual interest are investigated and the

students as well as the Department have been benefiting by this interaction. The department is

recognized as Centre of Advanced studies in Physicochemical aspects of Textiles, Fibres,

Polymers and Dyes presently in Phase VII, since 1962. The Department also played an important

role in evaluating TUFS under Ministry of Textiles, GOI. The faculty is engaged in high quality

fundamental as well as applied research and they have got over 1000 publications in Indian and

International journals as well as reputed fellowships to the credit from recognized institutions in

    India and abroad.
