Unit 18: Genetics and Genetic Engineering Assessed by Teresa Greer
Start date: February 4th 2009 Hand in date: February 23rd 2009
PurposeGenetic engineering is a prominent and controversial area of scientific advancement, so this assignment provides students with the opportunity to neutrally examine the scientific principles and the suitability for purpose in this area of science. Students will have the op-portunity to examine:
✓ The scientific principles behind genetic engineering
✓ Potential medical examples of genetic engineering
✓ Potential agricultural examples of genetic engineering
Scenario
Many supermarkets have publicly banned “Frankenstein Foods” because of the perception of genetic engineering promoted in the press. Gene Therapy as a treatment technique has also received a bad press. For this assignment you will be compiling a report that gives a neutral perspective on the appropriateness of genetic engineering for commercial pur-poses.
Task A This provides evidence for P4
From your own research you will investigate a range of practical uses for genetic engineer-ing. From your research you will choose two applications of interest. One must be related to crop production and the other to medical science.
First create a genetic engineering front page that covers the basic scientific principles of genetic engineering.
Then begin a profile on each of the chosen applications. The first section should be a de-scription of the given example, what is it, what has been altered and what is the idea be-hind the genetic modification.

Task B This provides evidence for M4
The next section of your profile should contain explanations of the commercial, social and ethical concerns of chosen examples.

Task C This provides evidence for D4
Evaluate application in terms of benefits and drawbacks of using genetic engineering, you can do this in the form of a venn diagram with added explanation, a paragraph discussing benefits and drawbacks or in table form. Add this to the end of the profile.

To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
To achieve a merit grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
P4 describe two differ-ent examples of current applications of genetic engineering and in the production of crops and medicines
P4 explain the com-mercial, social and ethical concerns regard-ing selected examples of genetic engineering
D4 evaluate application of genetic engineering in terms of potential benefits and drawbacks
