BTEC Learning for LifeWe have created a suite of certificates that place learning skills at the heart of learners’ personal development and achievement.

By delivering the course, you are empowered to build learners’ self esteem, confidence, and independent and interdependent learning as they develop and improve the skills required for learning and for life. The skills acquired in the BTEC Learning for Life courses can be applied to any subject, helping learners improve their results across the curriculum.

Learners learn to recognise and reflect upon their own •experiences and competences, providing them with the skills required to be successful in job interviews and to work independently in further and higher education.

Learners can progress through the course at a pace suitable •for them. Flexible unit options ranging from Entry 3 to Level 3 mean this qualification can be delivered to whole cohorts of students, with a range of abilities.

Evidence collection requirements are flexible, allowing •you to be creative with your delivery and letting learners take responsibility and ownership of their own and peer evidence collection.

BTEC Learning for Life can be embedded in any part of the •curriculum or taught as a stand alone qualification, allowing you to adapt the course effectively for your staffing structure.

About Learning for LifeThe BTEC Learning for Life Certificates are available at four levels – Entry 3, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.

They are accredited on the QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework), which means learners receive credits for the units they complete.

At each level, a minimum of 16 credits are required for learners to achieve the qualification.

Unit number Unit name Credits1 Developing skills for team learning 4

2 Developing skills for reflective learning 4

3 Developing skills for independent learning 4

3 Developing skills for creative learning 4

The qualifications are delivered in 160 guided learning hours at Entry 3 and Level 1, and 120 guided learning hours at Level 2 and Level 3. Guided learning hours are the maximum expected time to complete the qualification including all directed study (e.g. class work, homework, preparation and activity work, plus extra curricular activities).

At each level, learners are required to complete the above four mandatory units. The assessment criteria for each level builds upon the previous level, encouraging continual improvement and progression. It also allows learners to aim for a higher level and ‘drop down’ if required, but still be rewarded for the work they have done.

AssessmentAll units within the BTEC Learning for Life qualifications are internally assessed. To achieve a ‘pass’ a learner must have successfully achieved all the assessment criteria.

Evidence can be paper-based or in an e-portfolio. A range of media can be provided, including video, references and letters. Evidence can be collected or witnessed from sources outside of school or college, such as from a parent/guardian, employer, coach, etc, if it is verified by a teacher in the centre.

ApprovalAny organisation wishing to deliver BTEC programmes must first gain centre approval from Edexcel. An approved centre must obtain qualification approval to deliver and assess any BTEC programme at any level. To find out how you can gain approval to start offering BTEC qualifications, go to www.btec.co.uk/becomeapproved.

RegistrationThese certificates are recommended for learners aged 14+. You can register learners at any time of the year without incurring late fees, subject to centre approval.
