Assessment Activity 1 – Fitness Training

Task 1

As part of your BTEC Sport course you have been asked to help the PE department run the year 7 sports teams...

One of your first tasks is to make the year 7’s aware of the important role fitness plays in sports performance.

Make it clear to them what the fitness requirements are.

Your PE teacher has asked you to describe to your year 7 team the fitness requirements for achieving excellence in their sport (P1)

You can get the message across to the team in any way you like.

Assessment Activity 1 – Fitness Training

Task 2 (Merit Task)

Your description went down really well. From this, the pupils are more engaged and thinking about why they need these fitness components. They have been asking:

“why do I need agility” and “why do I need reaction time”

Go through all the components of fitness and explain to them why they are required for achieving excellence in their sport (M1)

Assessment Activity 2 – Fitness Training

Task 1

Now the year 7’s understand the important role fitness plays in sports performance, you have been asked to improve their fitness levels.

Start by describing three different fitness training methods the team could use to achieve excellence in a sport of their choice (P2)

You feel well equipped to help, considering that you have been working on this area in class and have a load of completed work that you know will come in handy.

Assessment Activity 3 – Lifestyle Factors

Task 1

The PE staff are getting a little worried about the attitude of some of the younger pupils in the school.

They seem to think that the behavior and lifestyle of some high profile performers is acceptable.

The year 7 teams need to understand the impact that lifestyle factors can have on training and performance. You need to describe four lifestyle factors that can affect sports training and performance (P3)

You know there are plenty of examples you can use to help get your message across as there always seems to be something on TV or in the newspapers.

Assessment Activity 4 – Fitness Testing

Doing all this work on fitness with the younger pupils has encouraged you to think very carefully about your own level of fitness. You would like to know how fit you actually are.

Task 1

You are to carry out 4 different fitness tests for 4 different components of fitness, recording the results accordingly (P4)

Your coach suggests you focus on 4 components of fitness you think are most important for your sport or your interests.

As you’ve been helping run a series of tests with the year 7s you realise the importance of:

Running the tests safely and correctly Recording the results accurately Conducting pre-test procedures such as getting consent and calibrating

equipment Making notes of test protocols such as reliability, validity and practicality

This can be submitted using photographic and video evidence.

Assessment Activity 4 – Fitness Testing

Task 2

Having completed the tests, you are looking at the results and interpreting them to show what they actually mean.

As ever, think carefully about how to do this.

Interpret the results (say what they mean) and comment on your current level of fitness (P5)

Assessment Activity 4 – Fitness Testing

Task 3 (Merit – M2)

Explain your test results and personal level of fitness, identifying your strengths and areas for improvement (M2)

Task 4 (Distinction – D1)

Compare your results to the national average, others in your group and perhaps tests you have done before. Use the information to evaluate your own level of fitness and think about where you need to be in your sport.

Evaluate your test results and personal level of fitness, considering the level required to achieve excellence in your selected sport (D1)

What does this result mean?

How does this compare with the national average?

Why is this test important to you?

Assessment Activity 5 – Psychological Factors

Having developed an understanding of fitness requirements and lifestyle factors, you are now going to look at psychological factors.

It is really important that the younger pupils know about the effects psychological factors have on sports training and performance, as well as the physical factors.

You need to carefully think about how you can pass on this information and develop their understanding.

Task 1

You are going to use both examples from your own sports training and performance, perhaps in your fitness lessons, to:

Describe the effects, both short and long term, of psychological factors on sports training and performance (P6)

Task 2 (Merit – M3)

Give the details of ‘how’ and ‘why’ the effects that motivation, personality, concentration, anxiety and arousal have on sports training and performance.

Explain the effects, both short and long term, of psychological factors on sports training and performance (M3)

Task 3 (Distinction – D2)

Covering both the short and long term effects, think carefully about how motivation, personality, concentration, anxiety and arousal can affect sports training and performance, and the type of effects they can have.

Analyse the effects, both short and long term, of psychological factors on sports training and performance (D2)

With your growing maturing you have total flexibility on how to get the information across. Make sure you support what you are saying with examples to make things as clear as possible. High profile examples may appeal more to younger pupils.
