Take part in the grand 3,000 tree plant this month! In an ambitious National Tree Day challenge, Council is urging as many as possible to take part in a massive tree planting event at Sydenham Park on Sunday 27 July, from 10am-3pm. The aim of the event is to plant a total of 3,000 trees in an area which was severely impacted on by early settlers back in the late 1800s. Originally a heavily treed area that was alive with native animals, the banks of the

Maribyrnong River at Sydenham Park were stripped by early settlers, leaving a river valley largely bereft of native trees and animals. To help with the re-vegetating of the area, come along on Sunday 27 July as many hands make light work. Meet next to the Keilor Golf Course end of Kings Road, Keilor (Melway ref:3J9). Please remember to bring along your own gardening gloves, water bottle and wear a pair of sturdy shoes, long trousers and long sleeve top.

A barbecue lunch will be provided at no charge by Brimbank City Council, cooked by the Rotary Club of Brimbank Central. Children under 16 years of age must be supervised by a responsible adult. To register visit treeday.planetark.org/site/10003681 or phone Councils Conservation Community Liaison Offi cer Martha on 9249 4717. Offenders who attack police or other emergency service workers can expect to be put behind bars under tough new laws introduced to State Parliament last week.

The Napthine government has introduced increased sentences for offenders who attack police, ambulance officers, SES volunteers, firefighters, protective services officers or lifesavers, as well as nurses, doctors or other staff in hospitals who provide or support emergency treatment.

Offenders who intentionally inflict serious injury on emergency service workers can expect to spend at least three years behind bars, while those who recklessly inflict serious injury can look to spend at least two years in jail.

If gross violence is involved, attackers will face a minimum of five years jail.

A 30-year jail term awaits anyone who murders an emergency worker.

Attorney-General Robert Clark said the minimum penalties would form part of the offenders minimum non-parole period.

When police and emergency workers put themselves on the line to help others, they deserve the communitys protection and support, Mr Clark said.

Penalties for those who engage in these attacks need to reflect the seriousness of the crime.

Everyone deserves the right to be as safe as possible when they go to work, especially those who willingly face very dangerous

situations such as those involving drug and alcohol-fuelled violence.

The new laws come five months after 43-year-old neurosurgeon Michael Wong was stabbed in the foyer of Footscrays Western Hospital.

Sunshine North man Kareem Al-Salami was charged with attempted murder over the attack and will go before court later this year.

Brimbank polices Inspector Chris Gilbert said attacks against police were uncommon across Brimbank, but he welcomed the tougher laws nonetheless.

Essentially, each of the services named are working for the people out on the street, not against them.

Whether its the MFB, the ambos or ourselves, were out there working for the people, he said.

There just cant be any tolerance for people who assault emergency workers when theyre just trying to help.

The vast majority of people are actually quite respectful of police and their role, and the other part of that is that our members think about safety first all the time.

Western Health declined to comment on the changes last week.

    Tougher laws to protect police

Penalties ... need to reflect the seriousness of the crime - Robert Clark

The life of a paramedic is challenging, varied and amazing just ask Louise Allford.

The 27-year-old Altona paramedic has been with Ambulance Victoria for four and a half years, mostly at the Brimbank station in Delahey. Being a paramedic is the crux of health care, she said. You see a range of cases and its a great opportunity to get out and about and meet different people in a job that changes and is challenging every day.

Brimbank paramedics work four days on, four days off, with two 10-hour day shifts and two 14-hour night shifts consecutively.

Ms Allford says her unit answers many cardiac and drug and alcohol-related call-outs.

We do a lot of the sporting injury-type

trauma, but the stereotypical major car accidents and such we dont see so much of, which is a good thing, she said. In a typical day wed probably do around six cases. Most of them are around the Brimbank area and western suburbs, but we never know where well end up.

I like meeting older people. They have such amazing stories sometimes they need a hand with only the simplest of things.

When someone calls an ambulance, its not a good time for them . . . so when you feel youve made some sort of difference, thats one of the best feelings you can have.

Weve had three or four houses which have sustained significant damage from fallen trees. And several cars have been damaged, too.

We also had to attend a fatal incident on the Calder Freeway.

A pedestrian was killed on the Calder after being struck by a truck in Keilor North about 5am on Thursday morning. Investigators have been told the man was walking on the outbound lanes of the Calder Freeway when he was hit by the truck.

Paramedics tried to revive the man, but he died at the scene.

It was the third pedestrian death in Brimbank in just over two months; two men in their 50s died on May 21 and 22 after being struck by vehicles on Ballarat Road.

    By Ben Cameron

It was predicted to be an interesting week by Brimbank SES and it certainly was with the local service receiving more than 100 calls for help in just over 24 hours as wild weather lashed the region.

Between midnight on Tuesday and 2pm Thursday the Brimbank unit received 135 calls for assistance from householders.

Fifty calls related to building damage and 77 were requests to remove fallen trees.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind gusts of up to 102km/h between midday and just after 1pm on Tuesday at Essendon Airport. Melbourne Airport recorded gusts of 104 km/h at 1pm.

Three response vehicles with support of a four-person incident management team have been working tirelessly around the clock since 9am yesterday [Tuesday], SES spokesman Brad Dalgleish said.

Tennis Victoria has warned that some clubs in

Brimbank face extinction following a council

proposal to increase fees, in some cases by

    more than 1000 per cent.

Tennis Victoria and representatives of a range

of sports clubs met council administrators

last week to strongly object to the councils

dra sports facility hire, licences and leases

    agreement policy.

Clubs will be charged fees of up to $2000 if

    Clubs cry foul over fees

their venues have a pavilion; they will also pay

    playing-surface fees.

At last weeks meeting, the clubs urged the

council to o er discounts for clubs that lease

    venues from the council.

Tennis Victoria executive manager Ken Jacobs

said many lease-holding tennis clubs would

face an uncertain future if the inequitable

proposal was given the green light.

Tennis clubs in Brimbank are totally

reliant on volunteers to manage their clubs,

Jacobs said. ey do not, however, have the capacity

to generate the same levels of income as some

other clubs with gate takings .

    Sydenham Tennis Club treasurer Stacie

Simon said her fees would skyrocket from $160

to $1498.Its a 1000 per cent increase for most clubs,

she said. Its not fair or reasonable .

    Sunshine Baseball Club vice-president Rob

Browne said the club was in danger of folding

as it faced a $3800 annual bill on top of a $750

Baseball Victoria annual fee. Our numbers

will drop, well close our doors as a worst case

    scenario , he said.

Clubs currently pay a at $160 annual fee,

raising about $7000 a year for the council.

    Brimbank community well-being director

Neil Whiteside said a new shared approach

between the council and clubs was required.

e council spends millions of dollars on

maintenance [on these facilities], he said.

e council will consider a nal dra for

    adoption at an upcoming meeting.

In a May 27 hearing at the Ballarat

Magistrates Court, the dogs three owners,

Stuart, Denise and Anthony Wilson, were

found guilty of owning a dog that caused

    serious injury.

    e prize-winning kelpie, named Mack,

attacked the girl at the Wilsons Balliang farm

    Reprieve for vicious dog

grandparents and uncle of the victim, must

pay nearly $12,000 for the dogs pound costs, a

$2 000 ne each and court costs.

However, the magistrate refused to sentence

Mack to death, leaving Moorabool council to

impose conditions for the owners before their

    pet is returned to them.

In making his decision, magistrate Peter

Mithen took into account that the Wilsons had

no prior convictions and had a good standing

in the community . In a closed session on June 4, Moorabool

councillors voted to place restrictions on the

dog, including keeping it in a secure location

and having it muzzled when it is not working

and when there are visitors at the property.

    Moorabool mayor

    Paul Tatchell

    said

community safety was paramount, which was

why the council vigorously pursued the matter

    through the court .

is case should serve as a reminder to

animal owners to supervise their animals

properly, particularly if they mix with children.

e council had originally requested that the

    dog be put down.

Current legislation is really wide-eyed when

it comes to working dogs , said Cr Tatchell.

We need to put a policy in place so we can

deal with working dogs. We live in a rural

region so the problem may come up again.

Moorabool council will now prepare a

contract to set out the exact conditions and

terms of Macks return. If the owners fail to

agree to the conditions within 14 days, Mack

will be declared a dangerous dog.

    Runway projects take ight

    By Xavier Smerdon

A new $28 million building at Werribee

Mercy Hospital is in danger of closing

just four months a er it opened because

of federal and state budget pressures.

e Catherine McAuley Centre is a

    rehabilitation and geriatric medicine

complex built to cater for patients in

    Melbournes west who are recovering

    from surgery or serious injury.

    e two-storey building, opened in

February, o ers an in-patient ward with

    30 multi-day beds, eight two-bed rooms

    and 14 single-bed rooms.

It also includes a gymnasium, meeting

rooms, sta rooms and o ces on the

    ground oor.

But Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said

funding cuts to Mercy Health, which

runs the hospital, could close the new

    sub-acute and rehab facility.

    Mercy Health executive director

of health services Dr Linda Mellors

con rmed that federal funding for

sub-acute services in the new building

    would end on June 30.

Were now waiting on our budget for

the next nancial year, she said.

    e rehabilitation and geriatric

    evaluation and management beds have

been full almost since we opened.

    ese services were desperately

needed and Im certain the community

would be disadvantaged if they were no

    longer available.

Ms Ryan said Mercy Health had been

hit with funding cuts of $29.4 million

    over the next four years.

    Mercy Health in Werribee has

well-trained and dedicated sta ; some

of the top experts in Victoria choose to

work at this service, Ms Ryan said.

But this makes their task so much

harder. Not only is there no new money

to fund for growth, it cuts expected

operation funding. is will have an

    immediate impact.

is funding cut has the potential to

put the brand new sub-acute and rehab

    facility under threat of closure.

    A spokesman for federal Health

    Minister Peter Dutton said health

funding to Victoria would rise from

    $3.46 billion in 2013-14 to $4.69 billion

    by 2017-18.

In regards to sub-acute beds, Ms

Ryan knows full well that was a one-o

    funding arrangement, like many other

programs provided to the states, the

    spokesman said.

Ms Ryan should explain why shes

    attempting to mislead her constituents

and why Labor didnt make any funding

    available in their forward estimates.

But Ms Ryan said that when

compared to Labors last budget, the

    Abbott government

    was investing

$3.2 billion less for public hospitals and

Wyndham residents could not a ord to

    EXCLUSIVE

A lack of choice for people with disabilities in Brimbank has led to an important support agency with nearly 70 years experience opening its doors in Sunshine. Inclusion Melbourne, founded in 1948, officially opened a new Sunshine office last week at the Visy Cares Hub.

The centre will employ up to four office-based staff, with 15 more expected to be working out in the community by the end of the year.

Inclusion Melbourne chief executive officer Daniel Leighton said he was attracted to the diversity and vibrancy of the area and hoped to make Sunshine, and Brimbank, an even more inclusive community.

His said his organisation gave people the chance to make new friends based on shared enjoyment of the activities they chose to take on, whether art, craft, exercise, being part of a sports team or volunteering at the local op shop.

We want to provide more opportunity for people with disability to get involved in their community, and we were keen to come to Sunshine because of the areas diversity and vibrancy.

The Sunshine office already has a number of dedicated volunteers signed up and ready to go.

For more information, to access services or to get involved, go to www.inclusionmelbourne.org.au or call 8508 6728.

    Helping hands reach out

    By Ben Cameron

Hes come a long way from teaching Brimbank kids how to swim, but former Taylors Lakes resident Luis Darcy is still helping the next generation.

The Australian army sapper and member of 21 construction squadron is part of a contingent deployed to Timor-Leste that is building a kitchen and dining area for school children at Dilis Comoro Intermediate School.

Its part of Exercise Pacific Partnership 14, a US-sponsored humanitarian exercise aimed at strengthening international relationships in the Asia-Pacific.

Darcy, who was born in Uruguay and came to Australia aged 15, was well prepared for overcoming language barriers, working alongside the Timor-Leste defence force engineers.

Weve all become really good mates, Darcy says.

Even if we dont understand everything that we say to each other, we all really appreciate having them around and they put in just as hard as we do.

A former Copperfield College student who joined the army as an electrical engineer after graduating in 2004, Darcy says its his first time working alongside the US navy.

Its been great working with other defence forces.

Everyone has been working so hard and weve managed to have everyone focus on achieving a good result on our building project.

I always wanted to be an electrician and it was great doing my training with the army and getting paid well, too. In my opinion, theres no better way to do an apprenticeship.

Theres a southern-country style about this house as you wander up the pathway through a well-maintained front yard, peppered with trimmed established trees, and with a wagon wheel propped against a wall.

The brick facade of the two-storey residence spans the width of the 598-square-metre block and has large multi-paned windows and a Juliet balcony.

Directly to the left of entry is a bedroom with built-in wardrobe.

To the right of entry is a spacious step-down living room with a mirror-panelled feature wall that opens up the space and fills the room with reflective light. Among other bold design statements

in this room are the pine-lined ceiling and exposed brick wall behind a wood heater on a brick half-round hearth.

Adjoining the living room, the kitchen has Tasmanian oak floorboards, timber cabinetry and laminate benchtops, a dishwasher, dual ovens and gas cooktop beneath a hand-hammered copper rangehood.

The family-meals area opens to two pergolas over a large paved courtyard which look out to an established, terraced garden.

Also on the ground floor is a bedroom, powder room and laundry, along with internal access to a double garage large enough to install extra storage for all those bulky household items.

Upstairs, there are three good-sized bedrooms with built-in wardrobes including the main with en suite and private balcony access. The fully tiled main bathroom has a large corner shower and marble-topped vanity unit. A separate toilet rounds out the upper level.

Other features include a hydronically heated slab, a wide driveway with room to park a boat, trailer or caravan, and high ceilings throughout.

The house is just a short distance from all services including the Brimbank shopping centre, schools and transport, and within a quick drive to freeway access.
