ErP not animposition but an opportunity

The implementation of Lot 1 and Lot 2of the ErP Directive relating toheating appliances on 26 September

last has serious implications for bothproduct suppliers and heating installers. While some will regard it as yet anotherunwelcome tier of bureaucratic form-filling, it is in fact an opportunity that willlead to better, more profitable business.

It will make for a level playing fieldwhen the various products in themarketplace are being assessed andcompared, and provide installers with atransparent and clear-cut mechanismwhen presenting options to their clients.

Both manufacturers and installers haveobligations under this latest phase of theErP Directrive and virtually all productsuppliers are already compliant.

On first reading the obligations oninstallers appear more onerous in thatthey relate to certification of the entireheating system. However, again themanufacturers have shown leadership bydevising mechanisms and tools thatinstallers can freely access to help themhonour their commitments.

See inside to learn how you can ensureErP compliance.

OFTEC calls forresponsibilityOFTEC has called on boiler manufacturers to use only seasonal efficiency data that isavailable on the Home-heating ApplianceRegister of Performance (HARP) database when quoting boiler efficiencies.

David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland said: “Webelieve it’s in the best interests of consumersand the industry that all manufacturers andenergy companies behave responsibly. It is vitalthat manufacturers in particular use the agreedseasonal efficiency data when quoting theirboiler efficiencies. This ensures the householderis getting the correct information, allowing themto make comparisons and informed decisions.

Paul Martin, Programme Manager, TechnicalStandards Development, SEAI added:"Consumers rely on accurate information andlike-for-like comparisons to help inform theirpurchases. We would therefore prefer to seemanufacturers using only efficiency levelsquoted on the HARP or SEDBUK databases tomaintain consistency across the industry.”

The large project at Fujitsu Ireland’s IT Services head office involved theinstallation of seven 45kW, two 40kW andone 33.5kW outdoor units across the twofloors and three wings of the Fujitsu Irelandoffices at Swords, Co Dublin. These, the indoor ducted systems and a DX splitsystem in the IT room, were all installed byDublin-based contractor Crossflow, throughfacilities management company Mitie.

The new Fujitsu system replaced an oldone based on the no-longer available R22refrigerant in a mixture of open-plan areas, small offices and meeting rooms. The IT room was kept on a separate system as it required almost constant cooling.

All the systems are controlled via Fujitsu’sPC-based System Controller, allowing remoteaccess for energy management, schedulingand fault fighting.

Crossflow Director Padraig Hanveycommented: “There were a number ofchallenges with the installation, not leastthat it was a working building, so most of theinstallation had to be done at night. However, thanks largely to Fujitsu’s people and itsequipment, it all went extremely smoothly.

“While Fujitsu systems were obviouslyspecified by the end user and we had neverinstalled them before, we certainly will again.

“Because we weren’t familiar with theequipment we received a great deal of helpfrom Fujitsu’s Technical Manager, Martyn Ives, and our engineers were sent for freespecialist training at Fujitsu Air Conditioners’training centre at Elstree, near London.

“Our engineers were very impressed with the equipment and how easy it was to install and commission. You normally getsome hitches but this installation went assmoothly as we could have wanted.”

Following the installation, Crossflow, which has been installing air conditioningand ventilation since 1972, received fullmarks in the Fujitsu internal installation audit.

Chris Dymond, Fujitsu Services InternalProject Manager, said: “Both designer andinstaller had never used Fujitsu VRF beforeand are well impressed, saying it is as good,if not better, than other manufacturers.”

Fujitsu’s Sales & Marketing Director, IanCarroll says: “It was pleasing to work withCrossflow on this prestigious project forFujitsu Services. It shows that when installers see the quality and flexibility of our VRF, backed by our first class technicalteam, they will then put Fujitsu forward on future projects.”

The Liebert AFC combines theexceptional levels of energy efficiencyallowed by adiabatic free-cooling,together with the endless availabilityguaranteed by the multi-scroll compressorback-up. This pioneering adiabatic systemenables water evaporation which lowersthe air temperature entering the free-cooling and condensing coils, consequently increasing free-coolingoperation and mechanical efficiency.

Moreover, it maximises free-cooling all year round while maintaining 100%cooling availability, even under the most critical conditions. These includefluctuating power supplies, watershortages and extreme external air temperatures.

“This is genuinely pioneeringtechnology”, says Steve

Wood, Sales Manager, Core AC. “Aconsolidated design and the integrationof new technologies have led to the most efficient water cooler in the market, resulting in partial Power UsageEffectiveness (pPUE) of 1.08, lower thanany other chilled water system. In addition, the Liebert AFC provides a significantincrease in terms of energy savings whencompared with other efficient chilledwater systems on the market.

“For example, in a typical 1.4MW datacentre located in central Europe runningat full load, a free-cooling chiller willconsume approximately 963,000 kWh ofenergy per year, based on current marketofferings. However, this is reduced to

645,000kWh over an annual period withthe Liebert AFC. This reduction in energyconsumption equates to a cost saving ofalmost €50,000 based on an energy cost of 0.15 €/kW.”

Emerson Network Power is continuallystriving to develop data centre solutionsfor the future. These are designed tooptimise availability to the customer inany circumstance and this commitmentwas marked in 2014 with the launch of its dedicated Thermal Managementbusiness. Drawing on the combinedexperience and industry-leadingknowledge within the ThermalManagement business, the Liebert AFCsolution seeks to address the complexrequirements of enterprise-scale and co-location facilities, in order to reliably andefficiently control and manage heat.

“Over the last few years the datacentre ecosystem has become mission-critical in supporting major innovationtrends such as cloud computing, thelatent power of ‘big data’, and theexponential rise of mobile devices”, says Austin McDermott, ManagingDirector of Core AC. “This, in turn, hasmade for an increase in operatingtemperatures within which ITinfrastructure functions.

“Our latest Liebert AFC adiabatic free-cooling chiller seeks to address some ofthe evolving pressures around this growingrequirement for heat management. Drivenby our understanding of the challengesfacing our customers, we are adoptinginnovative methods – like the newly-introduced adiabatic cooling – to deliverpioneering data centre solutions.”

The Liebert AFC – the world’s first adiabaticfree-cooling chiller – is now available in Irelandfrom Core Air Conditioning. Designed tomaximise free-cooling capabilities whiledelivering guaranteed availability within thedata centre environment, it delivers threecooling technologies in one highly-reliable and efficient unit, saving businesses up to 30% in annual energy costs.

12 Building Services News ❙ September/October 2015

For many years the commercial andindustrial heating industry has beeninvolved in an evolutionary process of product design in response tochanging regulations and standards. In particular, these efforts have beendirected at improving energyefficiency and reducing emissions with a view to both maximising theperformance of the products whilealso gaining commercial advantageover competitors.

The result of this is that productshave continued to improve and this isclearly a benefit to all concerned. Morerecently though, politicians, and inparticular the European commission, have become involved in this process. This involvement has resulted in theEnergy Related Products Directive(ErP). Under this Directive sit theEcodesign requirements for energy-related products.

The purpose of these regulations isto ensure that products continue toimprove and that manufacturers arerequired to comply with a standardisedset of performance standards. Thereare some aspects of the regulations, however, that are as yet unclear, thereby creating some uncertaintythroughout the supply chain.

To set the scene, Ecodesign has anumber of sections, known as “Lots”,each of which has a fairly broad scope.Much of the attention has been onLot 1 and Lot 2 which came into forceon 26 September 2015. Lot 1 covers

the Ecodesign requirements for spaceheaters and combination heaters, which refers to boilers up to 400 kWoperating on gas and oil fuels. Lot 2relates to water heaters and storagetanks up to 400kW input or 2000 litres capacity.

On a positive note, most of theissues relating to these Lots have been settled. With particularreference to boilers, Lot 1 requiresthat manufacturers of boilers withcapacities between 70kW and 400kWwill need to include information inthe technical fiche, but do not needto comply with the more onerouslabelling aspects of the regulations.

Currently, this means that themajority of commercial boilers will not need to comply with theEcolabelling regulations. However, it is interesting to note that theimproved thermal performance ofbuildings, combined with the growinguse and integration of renewables, isleading to a general reduction in thesize of boilers required for commercialapplications. Looking to the future, this may well result in more sub-70kWboilers being used in these applications– though by then the regulations willprobably have changed again!

One area where there is still aserious issue is when new boiler shellsand burners up to 400kW are suppliedseparately, as it is still unclear whetherthese fall within the scope of Lot 1. In relation to upgrades, it has been

Boiler design andspecification areinfluenced by a number ofnational andEuropeanregulations thatare divided into‘Lots’ that coverdifferent productgroups. RossAnderson,Director of theIndustrial andCommercialEnergy Association(ICOM), takes a look at thecurrent situation.

confirmed that identicalreplacement items will beavailable for a further three years,up to 26 September 2018.

Another area of uncertainty is the status of the regulationsfor gas and oil boilers between400kW and 1MW, and solid fuelboilers between 500kW and1MW (the latter being coveredunder Lot 15).

This is because larger boilers(1MW to 50MW) have to complywith the Medium CombustionPlant (MCP) Directive. So, there isa large gap between the 400kWgas and oil boilers covered by Lot 1 and the 1 MW boilerscovered by the MCP Directive.

There is a similarly large gapbetween the solid fuel boilers upto 500 kW covered by Lot 15 andthe MCP Directive. In fact, theoriginal draft document for

Lot 15 had a scope up to1,000kW, but this was reduced to500kW in a subsequent draft tofall in line with the currentstandard – EN303.

ImplicationsClearly, these areas ofuncertainty represent a majorheadache for the manufacturersas a lack of clarity makes itdifficult to reach informeddecisions about where best to make future investment in production.

However, it is not justmanufacturers that are affectedas the absence of a clear policypotentially creates issues forspecifiers and installers as well. For example, it could potentiallyencourage the use of lessefficient boilers in the rangebetween 400kW and 1000kW

as these will only have to meetexisting regulations. Similarly, if the specification is for a 1.2MW boiler, it would fallwithin the remit of the MediumCombustion Plant Directive, whereas two 600kW boilerswould not necessarily be covered by the new regulations.

Moreover, a specifier selectingseparate boilers and burnersunder 400kW has no meaningfulguidance as to what performancecriteria will ensure compliance. This could lead to specificationsas vague as “in accordance withthe Ecodesign Directive”.

As well as relating to efficiency, the Ecodesign requirements alsoset limits for emissions. In thecase of solid fuel boilers thatcomes under Lot 15 whereemissions levels are at such a low level that current designswill find it very difficult tocomply. For example, to ensurethat biomass boilers meetparticulate matter (PM) levels, the most effective solution willbe to add filters in the flue outlet on the boiler. These willrequire more plant room spaceand will add to overall costs.

Looking to the futureWhile this article focuses on areasof uncertainty, the situation isn’tall doom and gloom. Progress isbeing made in these areas andthere is good reason to believethese issues will be resolved inthe near future. To help achievethis, associations such as ICOMcontinue to work with regulatorybodies throughout Europe tosteer the regulations in adirection that works well for all stakeholders.

See www.icom.org.uk/ forfurther information. ■

The improved thermal performance of buildings, combined with the growing use andintegration of renewables, is leading to a general reduction in the size of boilersrequired for commercial applications.

The purpose of these regulations is to ensure that products continue to improve and thatmanufacturers are required to comply with astandardised set of performance standards. “

Heat Merchants has been developingits product portfolio in recent years and thelatest addition to its commercial offering isthe extensive Bosch commercial heatingrange. Established in 1895, BoschCommercial is now one of the world’sleading manufacturers of heating products, specialising in complete system solutionsfor the commercial and industrial heatingsectors. Individual boiler outputs go from50kW to 38,000kW and Heat Merchantscan now offer the full range, in addition totechnical support and specification service.

“Bosch Commercial is a global market-leading brand and we are delighted to have been selected as a supply partner forits extensive commercial heating range. OurTechnical Design team is available to assistheating engineers with specification andproduct selection for any commercialapplication”, said Alan Hogan, ManagingDirector, Heat Merchants Group.

One of the core ranges offered by HeatMerchants is the Bosch GB162, a range ofgas-fired boilers with 50kW, 65kW, 80kWand 100kW outputs. The 50kW offersinstallation flexibility for heating engineers

and bridges the gap between domesticboilers and the current light commercialrange.

The GB162 50kW boiler is suited to both large-scale domestic installations and light commercial applications. With net efficiencies of up to 110% and NOxemissions of less than 40mg/kWh, theGB162 range provides clean, low-carbonheating and hot water. It can also beinstalled in a cascade arrangement up to800kW with the ability to modulate downto as little as 2.5ºC of the total output.

Geoff Hobbs, Bosch Commercial Business Development Director, commented: “By adding a 50kW gas-fired boiler to our portfolio, we are making a commitment to those installerswho are accustomed to working with largedomestic or smaller commercialapplications. The GB162 is alreadyrenowned for being a very simple boiler to install, and the 50kW model gives extraflexibility to the range. The new ranges are also timely in respect of the recentapplication of the ErP Directive that saysnew commercial boilers with an output of

between 70kW and 400kW now have to beof a condensing type.

“Condensing boilers may have beenmandatory in the domestic market for overa decade, but it is only recently that theintroduction of the Energy related Products(ErP) Directive has seen the commercialsector follow suit. Early estimates suggestthat around 70% of commercial boilers soldeach year will now be of the wall-hungvariety, whereby systems comprising ofmultiple smaller output boilers in a cascadearrangement will become more common.

“ErP requirements are by no means aliento the vast majority of installers, but theneed to follow condensing boiler bestpractice will grow in importance as the shift away from cast iron gathers pace.Ultimately, as a regulation set by theEuropean Union, the ErP Directive isdesigned to drive improvements in theefficiency and performance of heating and hot water products”.

In a change from the usual format, this year’s outing featured ashot gun start with 24 four-ball teams participating. All entered intothe spirit of the occasion and arrived in excellent time for registrationand collective tee-off at 12.30pm sharp. There was some slight drizzleearly in the morning but, by the time the teams went out, it was dryand warm, with a notable wind that added another dimension to the “longest drive” competition.

Scoring was calculated under a Florida scramble in a bid to allowfor fairer team results. This meant that the player whose shot wasselected as best shot did not get to play the next shot. This alsomeant no delays on the course, the format working so well that aftertwo hours of play the teams were exactly half way round. Four hoursafter tee off the first teams began appearing back

With all the score cards returned by approximately 4.45pm, the golf committee undertook the difficult task of selecting the variouscategory winners, while the golfers showered and adjourned to thebar for some post-golf banter and socialising.

Thanks to the shot gun format, virtually everyone who playedremained on for the dinner and presentation of prizes with the mealbeing served at approximately 6pm and the presentation of prizesbeing completed by 7.15pm.

Individual prizes were presented for longest drive, nearest the pinand inside the pro, with team prizes going to third, second and first. The premier team award is the PJ Doyle Trophy, first presented in1990 in memory of Patrick J Doyle following his premature death. PJ was widely known and respected throughout the industry, wasCIBSE Chairman from 1988 to 1990, and a director at HA O’Neills. ■

Thermal Insulation Distributors Ltd(TIDL) is Ireland’s leading manufacturerand distributor of thermal and fire-stopping products for commercial andindustrial applications. Last month inBuilding Services News (July/August 2015edition) we featured an overview of thewhole company while this month sees the first of an ongoing series profiling thevarious divisions within TIDL, beginningwith the Thermal Covers Division.

Thermal covers serve a multitude ofpurposes (see panel), all of which arecentred on two primary benefits – energysavings and the health and safety ofoperatives working near the plant in question.

TIDL’s Thermal Covers Division produces a range of products includingremovable insulation jackets for industrialplant and equipment such as valves, flanges, strainers, boiler ends, heatexchangers and bespoke equipment.Virtually everything is custom made, designed and manufactured specificallyfor each application.

The process begins with TIDL engineersconducting thermal imaging analysis toidentify areas of serious heat loss and/or possible burn risk to personnel. Onfoot of that analysis, the design teamproduces a customised drawing for eachpiece of equipment and this forms themanufacturing template that ultimately

leads to the bespoke range of removableinsulation covers for the whole project.

TIDL Thermal Covers provides solutionsfor indoor and outdoor environments, including high-specification covers for the pharmaceutical, food, beverage, IT and petrochemical industry sectors.

Recently supplied contracts include:• Intel• Diageo• Pfizer• HSE

• Corrib Gas Terminal. All products are manufactured using

Class O materials to BS476 Part 6 and 7 tocomply with the Building Regulations Part B.

Further endorsing the quality of the

products is TIDL’s accreditation as an ISO 9001:2008 certified company for themanufacture, sale and distribution ofthermal insulation products.

Consequently, all covers are qualitychecked in accordance with ISO9001:2008 procedures before leaving the TIDL production facility.

All residential and commercialheating products must now carry theEuropean ErP energy efficiency labels, intended to assist consumers in theirpurchasing decisions, to help reduceprivate energy demand and combatclimate change. These labels will markthe grade of efficiency of eachindividual product. This label must bevisible on all display merchandise.

Heat pumps will be classified intonine efficiency categories, the highestbeing A++ to the significantly lowervalue appliances marked “Category G”.

For heat pumps providing heating at55°C, they must be labelled as A, A+or A++, with a minimum efficiency of100%. For low-temperature heatpumps, these systems must beworking at an efficiency rate of 115%within the A+ or A++ category.

Panasonic’s full range of heatpumps achieves A++ rating whenoperating at 55°C*. This is the highestrating that can be attained, highlighting that Panasonic solutionsare as energy efficient as possible.

The ErP Directive not only requires

manufacturers to label individual newproducts, but installers must alsoprovide a datasheet and energyefficiency label for each product in thequotation for the client. If an installeris working with a multi-technologysystem, the Directive not only requireslabelling of individual componentssuch as the boiler, controls and heatpump, but it will also be compulsoryto label the system as a whole, basedon a total energy efficiency calculation.

To make it easy for installers tocalculate a multi-system's energyefficiency and to obtain the appropriateErP label, Panasonic’s new online toolautomatically produces the systemlabel once the installer has goneonline and input the Panasonicproduct codes and data from othersuppliers’ product fiche of theequipment being installed.

Panasonic will supply the energylabel and data sheets for all its productsaffected by these regulations, whichmust be used when labelling itsproducts. Official labellingcommenced on 26 September but atransitional period of six months hasbeen granted.

Further to the ErP (Energy related Product) Directive

coming into force in September, Panasonic has developed

the Energy Label Generator, an easy-to-use online tool to

help installers comply with these new regulations. The

Directive requires manufacturers to label individual

products, and installers to label multi-technology systems.

Panasonic’s new A2W ErP Tool enables users to print out

the relevant labels and supporting data-sheets for

Panasonic equipment.

ErP imposes ‘fiche’obligation on installers

36 Building Services News ❙ September/October 2015

The introduction of the EnergyRelated Products Directive (ErP)impacts on all energy-relatedproducts sold within the EU. Anyproduct that consumes energy, with the exception of methods oftransport, has to meet a certain setof minimum requirements. Theobjective of these requirements is to significantly reduce greenhousegas emissions and any other adverse environmental effects of these products.

Product groups have been splitinto a series of lots with Lot 1covering heat-producing appliancessuch as boilers and heat pumps withan output up to 400kW, and Lot 2covering water heaters and hotwater storage tanks up to 400kWoutput or 2000 litres. These productsare now subject to minimumefficiency and emissions criteria. For heat pumps, noise limits will also be assessed. Manufacturerswhose products don't meet therequirements will be unable to sell those products in the EU.

All installations of boilers andwater heaters in new and existingbuildings are affected by the

Directive. As older products don'tcurrently meet the new efficiency oremissions limits, many will need tobe replaced. This will affect all non-condensing boilers up to 400kW,including atmospheric, pressure jetand pre-mix boilers.

There are actually two directiveswithin the ErP. The first, Ecodesign, sets the minimum energyperformance and environmentcriteria for energy-related products. The second, EnergyLabelling, says that every product

below 70kW will be classified with an efficiency band G to A+++,and the classification detailed onthe energy label stuck to theproduct. Apart from the usualperformance-related data, it isworth noting that the new-stylelabel includes a sound factoroutlining the boiler's operating level in decibels.

Virtually all manufacturers ofheating appliances covered by Lot 1and Lot 2 of the ErP Directive arenow fully compliant in this respect.

With Lot 1 and Lot 2 of the ErP Directive coming intoeffect on 26 September 2015, suppliers of heatingproducts – and more especially heating systeminstallers – are now subject to new obligations. However, before going on to explain what these are, Vincent Broderick, Sales Director Baxi Potterton Myson, gives a briefbackground to ErP and what it means.

ErP Directive:Layout 1 30/09/2015 14:19 Page 1

Page 39: Bsnews sept:oct 2105 web

What does ErP mean for theinstaller? For many homeowners the firstsight of the boiler will be during or after the installation date. Thiseffectively means that they aregoing to be guided by the installerwhen making a decision as to whatboiler to choose. Moreover, whilethe label includes information onoutput and relating to noise levels, they will depend on the installer to explain precisely what theinformation means. Consequently, it is up to installers to helphomeowners understand therelevance of ErP.

ErP is also significant for installersin that they are now responsible forcertain elements of the Directivewhen installing a new appliance. This includes calculating theefficiency of the installed system, providing an energy label for theproduct and completing the fichedocument.

This document will provide theinstaller with an efficiency figure forthe entire heating system, inclusiveof the boiler and heating controls. On the first and positive sideinstallers will have an additionaltool at their disposal to help up-sellother controls, as homeowners lookto become more energy efficient.

However, on the downside, installers now have to complete thisnew form using an online database. This, no doubt, will require a further learning curve for many.

Just what is a fiche? The fiche is a new documentinstallers are required to fill outwhen they complete an installation, whether for a simple boilerreplacement or a whole newheating system. It is seen as asupporting document to the energy label.

There is no standard format for a fiche but it must provide certain

information relating to theperformance and efficiency of theproducts installed. Suppliers arerequired to provide a fiche at thepoint of sale, usually in or with theproduct brochure or any otherliterature in the box, and installersare required to provide a fiche tothe consumer that records theefficiency of the whole heatingsystem.

While each product will besupplied with a completed fiche at the point of sale, heatinginstallations usually consist of morethan one appliance. This means thatthe installer will need to work outthe combined efficiency of theproducts installed within the totalsystem and then provide this newfiche to the consumer.

Each product performs differently, even if they are from the samerange. For example, a heatingsystem made up of a Baxi EcoBlue24kW and a Nest LearningThermostat will perform slightly

differently to a Baxi EcoBlue 28kW with a Nest LearningThermostat. This also applies wheninstalling water cylinders and/orsolar panels as part of a largersystem.

However, most manufacturershave created an ErP calculation tool to help installers work out asystem's efficiency. After in-puttingthe products that have beeninstalled, the ErP calculation toolwill work out the combinedefficiency rating and provideinstallers with a completed, printable fiche.

While the implementation of Lot 1 and Lot 2 of the ErP Directiveundoubtedly places an additionalburden on manufacturers andinstallers, it will lead to a moreorderly, transparent marketplacewhere consumers can betterevaluate the benefits of qualityproducts and systems. This has to be good news for all bona fidemanufacturers and installers. ■

Building Services News ❙ September/October 2015 37

Who is responsible for what? Both manufacturers and installers have obligations under the ErP Directiveto ensure compliance with the regulations. Essentially, under Lot 1 and Lot2 relating to heating products and introduced on 26 September last, theseare as follows:

Manufacturer• To provide the energy label for products.

Installer• To calculate the system's efficiency;• To provide the energy label for the system; • To complete the fiche to provide the efficiency figure for the complete

heating system.

Retail premises, offices, restaurants, warehouses, factories andcold rooms are all subject to the problemsassociated with frequently-opened doors. They not only cause discomfort but, because of the significant energy loss, greatly increase the running costs of abuilding. Using an Airbloc solution devisedand installed by Diamond Air makes for acost-effective and energy-efficient solutionthat can reduce heat loss by as much as80%, and of course lead to correspondingenergy cost savings.

Airbloc is the well-established brand of Nortek Global HVAC who has beendeveloping and manufacturing innovativeand quality-driven commercial HVACsolutions for many years.

The current Airbloc range comprisesambient unheated models or heatedmodels using gas, electricity, hot water orsteam. In well-insulated structures, Airbloc

provides the final complement to the lowenergy concept by eliminating a majorsource of heatloss.

Airbloc units are a simple and versatilesolution supplied in a compact modularformat for simplified on-site handling.Units are designed for doors up to sixmetres high. For industrial applicationswhere over-door installation is notpractical, the units may be verticallymounted at one or both sides of the door. Remote control panels are providedwith each air curtain to reduce on-sitewiring.

Although the three Airbloc ranges covermost standard applications, Airbloc aircurtains can be custom designed to meetparticular requirements. These mayinclude special sizing for integrationwithin ceiling systems or bulkheads, vertical mounting, or units with specificairflow performance.

Chris Jones, Airbloc Product Manager at Nortek Global HVAC says: “We are veryexcited to have teamed up with areputable company such as Diamond AirConditioning and are confident that theywill grow and strengthen our marketpenetration throughout the HVAC andbroader building services sector inIreland”.

“Airbloc is the perfect addition to ourexisting product line-up”, says DiamondAir Director Graham McCann. “It makesfor genuine solutions that are innovative,high-performing and energy efficient, something we strive to deliver on everyproject. These objectives are shared byAirbloc and our new partnership willresult in an even stronger service offeringto our existing and new customers”.

Hitachi Ireland, working closely withlocally-based air conditioning contractor Crystal AirServices, has just completed a major VRF, heatpump and heat recovery installation at SERC inNorthern Ireland

The Space is the new flagship performing arts, music, computing and engineering facility at theSouth Eastern Regional College (SERC) in Bangor,Co Down. The €16.5 million, 3,650sqm projectcomprises a professional theatre, dance studio, drama studio, conference hall, professionalrecording studios, industry-standard computinglaboratories and incubation facilities.

The different building types, varying occupancypatterns and diverse usage called for a verycomplex, yet simple-to-operate, indoor environmentmanagement system. However, working closelywith project consultants Bennett Robertson Designand mechanical contractor Harvey Group, Hitachiand Crystal Air Services came up with the perfectsolution.

Essentially, the system comprises six Hitachi Set-Free high-efficiency VRF systems; two 32kw Yutakiair/water heat pumps for the underfloor heating inthe ground-floor, open-plan, areas; Hitachi heatrecovery ventillation units (KPI total heat recoveryunits); and Hitachi’s CS NET WEB centralised web-based controller.

The unique features of the solution devisedincluded key benefits such as:• Low height, low noise indoors for recording

studios;• Off-coil control on cooling mode (limited from

12-16°C);• Fan-off on thermo-off condition (when set point

is reached on heating mode the indoor fan goesto off to eliminate cold draughts associated withair recirculation);

• Modular design that allows independentdefrosting of outdoors (continuous heating);

• CS Net Web with touch-screen and buildinglayout.Hitachi’s Set Free Variable Refrigerant Flow

(VRF) systems are an extremely powerful coolingsolution for all kinds of applications. They compriseoutdoor and indoor units, and control systems, designed to save on energy usage while beingreliable, flexible and easy-to-install.

Hitachi’s heat recovery ventilation systemsadjust the temperature and humidity of incomingfresh air to match the indoor environment. Benefitsinclude airflows from 250m3/h to 2,000m3/h; ErPLot 11-compliant motors; highly-efficient heatexchanger with automatic ventilation; energyexchange during summer months that reducescooling load by up to 20%; easy access hatches for simple in-situ maintenance.

Hitachi’s Yutaki S air-to-water heat pumps can be used for new installations, to replace aconventional heating system entirely, or alongsidean existing heating solution. » A useful guide to practical smoke shaft principles and specifications

sha

ftFor natural shafts, the head of the shaft is terminated with an automaticopening ventilator. Mechanical shafts useextract fans, mounted on the roof andconnected to the builder’s work duct withsheet metal ducting. An automatic openingventilator is mounted at the top of thestairwell and the complete system would becontrolled by an addressable control systemthat provides automatic operation of theventilation by interface with the fire alarm system or smoke detectors.

Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) are often used to ascertain thevolume flow rate required to maintainthe design conditions within the lobby. This was essential in the early days ofadoption of such systems as eachsituation was, in effect, a new scenario.

However, after more than five yearsof common usage, there is a bank ofdata available to inform such selectionfor most buildings, particularlyresidential where one lobby is verysimilar to another. Fläkt Woods nowhas data from dozens of models andhas aggregated this into a matrix to develop suggested extract rates for buildingswithin the parameters of BS 7974.

Against this background Flakt Woodsdesigns bespoke solutions for each individualproject, carefully selecting the necessarycomponents and combining them to deliverthe perfect solution. The key elements of these solutions include:

Stairwell ventilatorThe ventilator above the stairwell will primarily

be used as an air inlet for the smokeshaft andshould have a minimum free area of 1.0 sq m.It should also comply with EN12101-02;

Smoke exhaust plantFor mechanical shafts, extract fans shouldcomply with EN12101-03 and a standby fan is required in case of fan failure. The selectionof the appropriate temperature rating shouldbe dictated by the results of any designcalculations or CFD modeling. However, basedon previous project data, a rating of 300ºC for

1-hour will be suitable for most residentialsituations. Ventilators at the head of naturalshafts should be to the same standard asstairwell ventilators, complying withEN12101-02.

Lobby ventilatorsThe ventilator connecting the lobby to thebuilder’s work shaft may be a door type or adamper. The basic requirements are for it toopen on the fire floor to exhaust smoke andfor the remaining floors to remain closed,

preventing smoke spread and maintaining firecompartmentalisation.

There is no specific standard for theseproducts so the two common approaches areto use an E30Sa fire door (with an electricalactuator) or a smoke damper, neither of whichwill be fully certified for the application butwhich offer pragmatic solutions. The actuators should be “drive open”, “driveclosed” rather than a spring-return type.

Control systemThe control system should comply withEN12101-09 where applicable, andsensitive equipment such as invertersand PLCs should be located out of the fire zone. It may be designedspecifically for the building, or be amodular standardised product that can be configured to the building.

Most residential applications will suit the modular approach, with localzone control panels located throughoutthe building communicating with acentral processor, usually located at the fan position, and a HMI panel at a convenient location that is used for commissioning and testing.

Triggering of the system may be fromdedicated smoke detectors purely for theoperation of the smoke control system, orthrough interface with a building smokedetection system compliant with BS5839 part 1, L5 classification.

Smoke shafts are essentially a simple ventilation system designed to extract anysmoke leaking into a common lobby to protect the escape stairs. Typically, avertical builder’s work duct rising through the building would be used to extractsmoke from the lobbies and each lobby would have a damper connected to thebuilder’s work duct, writes Gavin Power, Flakt Woods.

With a strong focus on printingexcellence and productivity at Polestar, the new humidifier installation providesan effective solution to the problem ofelectrostatic charge generation whenprotective paper is removed from the litho plates. By reducing anddissipating the electrostatic charge, thepaper and plates are easier to handle, it prevents the attraction of dust andreduces the risk of spark generation.

The Condair ML humidifier deliversultrafine sprays directly into the air, which rapidly evaporate to maintain arelative humidity of 45%RH, the levelrequired to counter the effects of static electricity.

The Condair ML Solo is a low energy, cold water spray humidifier, requiringjust 5% of the energy used byequivalent steam humidifiers. This fits well with Polestar’s strongenvironmental credentials, which seek to minimise its impact on theenvironment through initiatives such asrecycling and wastewater management.

Ten spray heads are located in theplatemaking area, with a capacity to

deliver up to 48 litres of pure, demineralised water into the air eachhour. Effective moisture distribution isensured from the twin jets on each MLSolo unit by a low energy, low-noisefan. Operating in complete safety at70bar, the jets are fed with mineral-freewater produced centrally by a CondairMLPRO100 pump and reverse osmosistreatment station. The system features a stainless steel, oil-free, high-pressurepump, RO water purification and UVwater sterilisation, so low maintenanceand pure, hygienic sprays areguaranteed.

Work at the Polestar Sheffield plantalso included the installation of twochillers, inverter-controlled chilled waterpumps, pumping stations, tanks andover 3km of stainless steel pipework, with Condair undertaking theinstallation of the humidificationsystem.

Condair’s ML Solo humidifier iswidely used in the printing industryaround the world, particularly in paperstorage, press halls and print finishing. An environment of 45-55%RHeffectively deals with problems caused

by dry air such as tight edges, papercurl, misfeed and web breaks, andeffectively disperses static and dust.

In an industry where temperatures can get high, the cold water humidifieralso offers the benefit of free cooling –up to 33kW from a system like the oneat Polestar. It is also widely used forhumidification and evaporative coolingin many other industrial applicationssuch as woodworking and textiles, commercially in horticulture, inapplications such as supermarkets to maintain the quality of freshvegetables, and in offices.

The spray head operation is virtuallysilent, introduces no dust to theatmosphere, is hygienic and requiresonly infrequent and straightforwardmaintenance. With a choice of colours, jet configuration and outputs, withadjustable brackets for directionalorientation, they can be ceiling- or wall-mounted and suit many situations.

I graduated from DIT Bolton Stwith a degree in building servicesengineering in 1999, having spent a few summers along the way inChicago on J-1 visas and where Imade lots of life-long friends. Ongraduation I worked for a shorttime in a factory in my hometownof Tullamore but, when anopportunity arose to obtain aworking visa in the United States,I decided to head back toChicago and “the land ofopportunity”.

The Irish built Chicago andmade it what it is today … theheart and soul of the Midwestand economic fulcrum of thenation. The Irish have always

had a prominent role in thedevelopment of Chicago as a world-class city, from the Irish workers who dug the ditches in1900 to reverse the flow of the Chicago river,to the first Mayor Daley who ran the city for21 years from 1955 to 1976; the second MayorDaley (his son) who ran the city for 22 yearsfrom 1989 to 2011; and the current crop ofIrish-born professionals who lead today’s realestate, financial, construction, energy andlegal industries.

Chicago is a work-hard/play-hard city. Thework-hard part is a given in a city built onblue-collar Midwestern (and Irish) values —you work hard or you don’t survive. The play-hard part applies to having fun after workand on the weekends with friends and, lateron in life, with family. I have three youngdaughters so these days I play harder thanever, just in a different setting.

After a few months working at a local baron the north side of the city called Sheffield’sin 1999, I had my first interview with a firmcalled Henneman Raufeisen, a well-respectedmid-sized Midwest engineering firm. Myinterview with company principal AlRaufeisen was a few hours long and wechatted about everything from Formula 1racing to engineering formulas. I spent 10great years at Henneman Raufeisen. It was agreat introduction to the HVAC design industryand Al turned out to be a mentor that heavilyinfluenced my professional career.

I had the perfect head start thanks to thegreat education I received at DIT Bolton St.

The building services engineering courseis a fantastic foundation to build on.Coming straight out of college andbeing able to lay out piping andductwork systems, and size major piecesof HVAC equipment like boilers, chillers, pumps, towers etc, gives you all thetools you need to hit the groundrunning. Engineering graduates in theUS typically have a much broadercurriculum, so having this skill-set fromcollege is a definite advantage. In mycurrent role I still try hard to hire DITBolton St graduates because I know howwell educated they are in the buildingservices industry. Just last year we hadfour DIT Bolton St graduates in thesame office.

When I started out in the industry I was surprised at the attitude towardssustainable and high-performancebuilding design. The industry in the USleaned heavily on rules of thumb andsafety factors when sizing equipment, and very little priority was given tobuilding simulation or creating energymodels. Things started to evolve around2002 when the US Green BuildingCouncil’s Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design (LEED) buildingrating system began to get a footholdin the design and construction industry, and terms like “energy modeling” and “commissioning” becamecommonplace.

The US had a lot of catching up to do with European high-performancebuilding codes and standards, but itmanaged to close the gap relativelyquickly over the following few years, culminating in LEED being the mostrecognised green building rating systemon the planet, and a major driver formarket transformation in the United States.

In 2009 I got an opportunity to bepart of a start-up company calledBuilding Momentum Group (BMG) thatfocused exclusively on the performanceof the built environment, with coreservice offerings of energy modeling,high-performance building designconsulting, commissioning and energy assessments.

The construction industry was in a lull because of the recession, but itturned out to be a great time to startsomething with a fresh and newperspective, shaking things up andchallenging the industry’s conventionalthinking. At that time in 2009 mostfirms were still in survival mode oremerging from the recession andbattening down the hatches to ridethrough the economic storm. We hadthe luxury of having venture capitalbehind us from a large manufacturingfirm that wanted to diversify into aconsulting service model. We quicklygrew our group from two to 10 in a“down economy”.

The work environment at a start-upfirm is a fantastic experience and onethat I highly recommend everyone try at some point in their career. It is a lean, fast-paced, high-pressure, fun, dog-eat-dog world that refocuses

priorities but can be hugely fulfilling. As a dynamic and nimble enterprise that could quickly change tack, re-navigate and refocus if needed multipletimes over while the big boys were stilltrying to turn their ship, it was a funway to challenge market norms andindustry standards.

However, as the construction marketrebounded, our venture capital was re-allocated to one of our parentcompany’s core sectors, and just likethat our start-up firm dissolved … butthat’s how it goes and in the words of Liam Gallagher, “you gotta roll with it”.

Chicago is the epicentre forarchitectural design firms and at ourstart-up firm we had worked with mostof the bigger firms in town (who alsowork nationally and globally). This gave us a pretty good insight into theworkings of the biggest and best in the

“St Patrick’s Breakfast Chicago” – fellow DIT Bolton St building services graduates andDLR Group employees (l to r) Patrick O’Sullivan, Shona O’Dea and Ruairi Barnwell withChicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Chicago is the only city in the US to dye its river green for St Patrick’s Day.

Postcard from abroad:Layout 1 30/09/2015 11:36 Page 2

Page 48: Bsnews sept:oct 2105 web

industry. What we quickly found wasthat the marketing rhetoric doesn’talways live up to the actual innerworkings of a design firm, and once youlook behind the curtain things aren’tnecessarily as rosy as they appear inthe glossy brochures.

One firm that we really had peggedas guys who “get it” was DLR Group. As one of the initial signatories to theArchitecture 2030 challenge (which is acommitment to design carbon-neutralbuildings by 2030), DLR Group actuallywalked the marketing talk. So, whenthe opportunity arose to take the coreteam from our start-up but nowdissolved firm over to start a high-performance building design group at DLR Group, we jumped at it.

DLR Group is an integratedarchitecture and engineering designfirm, with over 700 employees spreadaround 22 offices in the US and China.I’ve been lucky enough to visit a lot ofthese offices, including a trip to ourHawaii office in 2013. In 2012, Architectmagazine, the official publication of theAmerican Institute of Architects in theUS, ranked DLR Group as the No: 1design firm in the country.

One of the first projects I worked onat DLR Group was Chicago’s first LEEDPlatinum Fire Station, Engine Company16, which became the blueprint andprototype for all future fire stations inthe City of Chicago. Coming from a

family where my father was a Fire Chief, being part of this project was a veryproud achievement for me personally.

At DLR Group I was given the supportto build a “best-in-class” team ofengineers that were focused andpassionate about integrated design andthe optimisation of holistic buildingperformance. Today I lead a group ofengineers out of our Chicago office thatsupports our integrated design practiceregionally and nationally, and also sticksto that same start-up principles of beingnimble, dynamic and adaptable tochange in a rapidly-evolving energy, sustainability and design industry.

Chicago has everything a youngprofessional could ask for. The cost ofliving is average, rent can be high in thetrendier areas, just like any city, butthere’s always a food or drink special tobe taken advantage of at the many barsand restaurants across the city.

On any given day there are at least

two direct flights that leave Chicago forDublin, so Ireland is only seven hoursaway and it’s possible to do a quickweekend home. I’ve done it for some of the important Irish soccer qualifyingmatches and World Cup play-offs.

There is a great Irish network inChicago today and a “can-do” attitudethat is infectious. Nobody will ever sayno to making an introduction or doingyou a favour. New York gets a lot of thespotlight, and the West coast has theglamour, but if you are ambitious thereare few spots in the country with morepotential for growth than Chicago.

One big cultural difference to Irelandis that people in Chicago don’t sit in allweek waiting for the weekend. If it’snice on a Tuesday evening then it’s timeto have an impromptu BBQ or get outfor a quick sail on Lake Michigan or tocatch a Cubs game at the legendaryWrigley Field. Even when Saturday doesroll around, you are more likely to betailgating at a sporting event, enjoyingthe outdoors camping, playing on oneof the many GAA teams in Chicago orbike riding on the lakefront than being

in a nightclub at 2am looking for last orders.

The winters aretough but that makesevery hour of theSpring, Summer andFall (Autumn) evenmore precious andforces you into amantra of living everyhour of the day to themaximum, Chicagostyle! ■

When he first started hiking his goal was to reach the top of the highest mountain ineach province in Ireland. Having done that twice, this year he set his sights further afield. He choseKilimanjaro which, at 5895mts, is the world’shighest free-standing mountain.

He booked the trip with a company called Pat Falvey Irish Worldwide Adventures, which isbased in Kerry and run by full time adventurerPat Falvey.

There were 15 on the trip covering all ages, including an 80-year old man, Kevin Gormley, who was climbing with his two sons to mark his 80th birthday. He was an inspiration toeverybody, complaining least and setting thepace for the entire group. In fact, he became the oldest Irish person to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro.

The party flew out from Dublin to Tanzaniafrom where they began their trek using theMachame Route where the usual scheduleinvolves five days to the summit and two to descend.

The early pace was surprisingly slow. Thelocals catchphrase was “poley poley”, whichmeans slowly slowly. It would later become very obvious that acclimatisation was the key to reaching the top.

On the third day David began to experience a degree of mild altitude sickness. It’s somethingthat you can’t really legislate for in advance butwhen it hits it’s not very pleasant. A thunderingheadache and exhaustion are the leadingsymptoms. Again acclimatisation is the key and thankfully, the next day, he was over it.

The party made good progress over the nextfew days, stopping at camps every eveningwhich were set up by the porters who wentahead each morning to prepare for their arrival and overnight stop.

As they progressed they encountered differentclimatic zones which were reflected by the plantgrowth – the coffee and banana plantations; a beautiful tropical rain forest; a spectacularmoorland/alpine meadow; an amazing lunarlandscape; and finally, the depleting glaziers of a summit ice field on Summit Night.

The Summit Night (day five) was really whatthe trip was about. It was visible from day twoonwards and looking up at it from early on it

looked insurmountable. The summit attemptbegan at 11pm the night before and the plan was to arrive at the summit for sunrise at 6am.

As it happened they arrived at the summit of Kilimanjaro (“UHURU” – Peak of Freedom) at around 7am on 27 June. The sense ofachievement was huge and thankfully everybody in the group got to the summit and back down again safely.

Based on the strength of this experience Davidplans to tackle the Himalayas next year. ■
