BSIDESDFW WELCOME
Thank you for your interest in sponsoring Security B-Sides Dallas-Fort Worth (BSidesDFW). We
are excited to be continuing this event into its ninth year as we provide a local low-cost
alternative for the security hobbyists, enthusiasts, practitioners, academics, and researchers.
The original 2009 un-conference in Las Vegas spawned a wave of new similar events throughout
the United States and around the world. Security B-Sides (BSides) is a community-driven
framework for building events for and by participants in the information security community. It
creates opportunities for individuals to present and participate in an intimate atmosphere that
encourages collaboration. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction by
participants. This is where conversations for the next-big-thing happen. The open platform gives
community participants a rare opportunity to directly share ideas, insights, and develop
longstanding trusted relationships with others in the community. The BSides family continues
to grow each year and plans are underway for new international BSides events in Tokyo, Cardiff,
and Jordan.
While BSidesDFW has traditionally offered free admission to the participants, there is a cost
associated with producing such an inclusive event, one which is shouldered by the generosity of
our sponsors. This package contains information specifically for BSidesDFW 2018 and includes
various opportunities for sponsorship to provide optimal benefit for you, our sponsors.
It is our belief, the greatest reward is that of supporting and giving back to the community by
enabling others to grow and learn. However, there are also other benefits associated with your
sponsorship. You will find near exclusive access to some of the top talent and leading
companies in the region.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or requests. You can reach us via
email at [email protected].
Again, thank you for your consideration. We value your participation at BSidesDFW and the
BSides ecosystem at large.
Regards,
BSidesDFW 2018 Coordinators
BSIDES INFORMATION
EVENT INFO
Security B-Sides is a framework of events that enables individuals to expand the spectrum of conversation
beyond the confines of traditional media. Frameworks such as BSides enable individuals to drive the event,
shape the media, and encourage participation. BSides are free and/or low-cost, community organized events
put on by local individuals with the expressed goal of enabling a platform for information dissemination. BSides
is an unconference that encourages use of the Open Space format. This varies from structured presentations
to free-form “fire talks”, but all provide a direct connection between speakers and the participants.

GOALS
BSides events act as a complement to other conferences by enabling a long-tail spectrum of conversations that
expand upon and/or provide alternate perspectives to the current and related topics to our industry. The goal is
to foster communication and collaboration while increasing the level of involvement and investment in our field.
Major corporate conferences focus mainly on the current hot topics in Information Security as it relates mostly
to business-specific interests. BSides events explore the fringe of security conversation, uncovering the
innovations and issues hidden around the corner. Our subjects have ranged from hardware hacking to gender
issues, from Twitter hacking to proximity-based identity theft.
In other words, BSides gives voice to the conversation that is happening just below the surface months before it
hits the mainstream media, and sponsoring enables you to engage that audience.
TARGET AUDIENCE
While each BSides event is distinct, we target the industry
professionals looking to offset or augment their current security skill
set with applicable and actionable conversations that question
everything from industry-standard paradigms to the Next Big Thing.
These are industry leaders, thought leaders, information security
professionals, and students who wish to expand their body of
knowledge. People who attend have various backgrounds in different sectors and verticals. Their common goal
is to learn about emerging issues and connect with those who are experiencing and mitigating them.
Unlike other events where the speakers are limited to narrow time slots and quickly ushered out afterwards,
BSides provides a small and intimate environment for the participants to directly engage the speaker before,
during, and after their talk or presentation. Participants are seeking far more than just information; they are
looking to make connections they will call upon throughout the rest of the year and beyond.
Prior BSidesDFW speakers include:
Wendy Nather (“The Code Your Code Could Smell Like”, 2010)
Simple Nomad (“Emerging Security Threats”, 2010),
Jayson E. Street (“How I Walked In And Misbehaved”, 2011)
Andrew Case (“Investigating Coordinated Data Exfiltration”, 2011)
Bertaha Marasky (“Big Data, Little Secrets”, 2012)
Branden Williams (“The Failure of Information Classification: A New Model is Afoot!”, 2012)
Valerie Thomas (“Securing the Human: Security's Real APT”, 2013)
David Cowen (“File System Journaling Forensics”, 2013)
Lenny Zeltser (“Introduction to Malware Analysis”, 2014)
Mike Sconzo (“Machine Learning in Security”, 2014)
J. Wolfgang Goerlich ("New Ways to Steal, New Ways to Protect", 2015)
Lennart Koopmann ("Lean Threat Intelligence: Detecting Intrusions and Combating
Infiltrators with Open Source Software", 2016)
Itzik Kotler (“Malware From Thin Bits”, 2017)
Megan Roddie (“Strengthening Your SECOPS Team by Leveraging Neurodiversity”, 2017)
BSIDES ETHOS
PARTICIPATION
BSides is made up of participants rather than “attendees”. Each
Participant in BSides brings something to contribute, from
hardware and new technology demonstrations to organizational
skills and their own social groups.
MEDIA COVERAGE
In the first year alone, BSides gathered mass media attention and received coverage in CSO Online, The
Register, ZDNet, and Dark Reading magazines. In addition to the plethora of blog posts and podcasts, BSides
has also received coverage from Hacker News Network (HNN), EFFector Newsletter, and Cisco System Cyber
Risk Report. Check out the entire list here: http://www.securitybsides.org/Media
SUPPORT AND SPONSORSHIP
REASONS TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT
As a proud Sponsor, you are offering to bring critical resources that to help fuel
the evolution of the industry from a fundamental level. Being involved in an
event as intimate and specifically focused as this has enormous benefits.
BRAND RECOGNITION AND AWARENESS: Depending on the level of sponsorship, you
may enjoy your brand placement on some or all of the following: shirts,
signage, lunch sessions, lanyards, or participant badges. You could also enjoy creative and custom branding,
including transportation, banners, and podcast interviews.
BIG FISH, SMALL POND: Sometimes, sponsoring large or multiple events is not
within your budget, leaving you with few options for communicating your
message to that professional IT demographic. We provide an excellent
solution to that problem! Our small, community atmosphere brings together
active and engaged participants who not only want to absorb information but
also make things happen. We can enable you to be that big fish.
STAY IN TOUCH WITH THE INDUSTRY: Having a presence at BSides not only gives
you access to an audience but also to the leaders and professionals who are
actively driving the future shifts in the Information field. You’ll have early
access to the thought processes and conversations that create the Next Big
Thing.
INTERNET SIMULCAST: Many of the BSides events are simulcast online, which means
that your exposure is not just to the few hundred (or thousand) participants in
attendance – your reach goes much, much further. The 2010 San Francisco BSides
event online audience ranged from 5 to 10 times those present onsite at the event.
Plus, these simulcasts are archived online for later viewing, making your
contribution much more persistent. In 2016 BSidesDFW partnered with Shadow
Systems and simulcast the primary track. We expanded on this partnership in 2017
and recorded both tracks. We are expecting to continue that trend in 2018 as well.
MEDIA: The media coverage for BSides is massive relative to its size. When you are
part of the conversation, it’s easy to get your message swept up in the media. Many
participants have been quoted and picked up by mainstream news sources
including National Public Radio (NPR).

BENEFITS / VALUE OF SPONSORSHIP
Every organization has different goals and priorities for their interactions, which is why we offer several different
levels of sponsorship for any individual, group, or organization. Fiscal responsibility demands mileage from your
marketing dollars. What will your contribution get you in return? Sponsoring a specific activity, for example
lunch, will yield recognition at the opening and closing remarks as well as targeted signage at the food table(s)
thanking you for your patronage. This puts your name and logo in front of our 300+ participants at multiple
times throughout the day. Alternately, you may seek a more interactive sponsorship by selecting an option that
gives you a booth. One-on-one face time with decision makers/influencers, technical administrators, and/or
technology champions. Additionally you may be speaking with available candidates and/or students who are
soon to be changing their role in the industry and bring their experience to your organization. Additionally
BSidesDFW acquired formal 501(c)(3) status in 2017 enabling new options for benefactors.
**While BSidesDFW does not provide a participant list directly, you are welcome to solicit contact information
from participants while on-site at the event. Door prize drawings are an excellent option for this.
