Structural Design EurocodesThe Eurocodes are seen as leading the way in structural codes. Their flexibility enablesadoption and use not only within Europe, but internationally. This feature has beenrecognized by several countries outside Europe and they are already committed toadopting Eurocodes. The primary objectives of the Eurocodes are to: • Provide common design criteria and methods of meeting necessary requirements for mechanical resistance, stability and resistance to fire, including aspects of durability and economy

• Provide a common understanding regarding the design of structures between owners, operators and users, designers, contractors and manufacturers of construction products

• Facilitate the marketing and use of structural components and kits in EU Members States • Facilitate the marketing and use of materials and constituent products, the properties of which enter into design calculations

• Be a common basis for research and development, in the construction industry • Allow the preparation of common design aids and software • Increase the competitiveness of the European civil engineering firms, contractors, designers and product manufacturers in their global activities.

The Eurocodes comprehensively cover all principal construction materials. They are structured and located in this brochure as follows:

Basis of structural design is the lead document in the Eurocode suite. It describes the principles and requirements forsafety, serviceability and durability. It also provides the basis and general principles for the structural design and verificationof buildings and civil engineering works (including geotechnical aspects). It is the first operational 'material-independent'design code. BS EN 1990:2002 should be used in conjunction with all the other Eurocodes (BS EN 1991 to BS EN 1999)for design.

Eurocode 1 Actions on structures provides information on all actions that should normally be considered in the design ofbuildings and civil engineering works. It is in four main parts. The first part is divided into seven sub-parts which cover densities,self-weight and imposed loads; actions due to fire; snow; wind; thermal actions; loads during execution and accidental actions. The remaining three parts cover traffic loads on bridges, actions by cranes and machinery and actions in silos and tanks.

Eurocode 3 Design of streel structures has a much wider scope than most of the other design Eurocodes due to thediversity of steel structures, the need to cover both bolted and welded joints, and the possible slenderness of construction.

The real differences when compared to existing British standards lie in bringing new methods into the scope. Forexample, the design of semi-rigid joints in buildings is explained, and more advanced methods of design for cold-formedsteelwork are included. The rules for shell and for the design of piles, sheet piling and silos are new, and rules forstainless steel appear for the first time.

Effects due to shear lag, in-plane load introduction and plate bucklingfor I-section girders and box girders are covered. Also coveredare plated structural components subject to in-plane loads as in tanks and silos. The effects of out-of-plane loading are outside the scope of this document.

Eurocode 6 SeriesDesign of masonry structures

Eurocode 6 Design of masonry structures relates to buildings and other civil engineering works, and coversreinforced, prestressed and confined masonry. The four parts cover the rules for reinforced and unreinforced masonry, structural fire design and detailed rules for lateral loading. They code deals with specific aspects of passive fireprotection in terms of designing structures and parts for adequate load bearing resistance that could be needed forsafe evacuation of occupants and fire rescue and for limiting fire spread.

This Eurocode also applies to the design of buildings and civil engineering works, or parts in unreinforced, reinforced, prestressed and confined masonry. It outlines the requirements for resistance, serviceability and durability of structures.

BS EN 1996-1-1:2005 Eurocode 6. Design of masonrystructures. General rules for reinforced andunreinforced masonry structures

BS EN 1996-1-1 deals with unreinforced masonry and reinforcedmasonry where the reinforcement is added to provide ductility, strength or improve serviceability. The principles of the design of prestressed masonry and confined masonry are given, butapplication rules are not provided.

Eurocode 8 SeriesDesign of structures for earthquake resistance

Eurocode 8 Design of structures applies to the design and construction of buildings and civil engineering works inseismic regions. Its purpose is to ensure that in the event of earthquakes:• Human lives are protected• Damage is limited• Structures important to civil protection remain operational.

It is unlikely that BS EN 1998 needs to be used in the UK, except for special structures – e.g. nuclear structures, longspan bridges and tall buildings.

BS EN 1998-1:2004 Eurocode 8. Design of structures forearthquake resistance. General rules, seismic actionsand rules for buildings

BS EN 1998-1 applies to the design of buildings and civilengineering works in seismic regions.

BS EN 1998-1 deals with: • Basic performance requirements and compliance criteria

applicable to buildings and civil engineering works in seismic regions

• Rules for the representation of seismic actions and for theircombination with other actions

• Fundamental requirements and other relevant aspects of design and safety relatedto base isolation of structures and specifically to base isolation of buildings

• General design rules relevant specifically to buildings. Contain specific rules for various structural materials and elements, relevant specifically to buildings.

BS EN 1998-2:2005+Amendment1:2009 Eurocode 8.Design of structures for earthquake resistance. Bridges

BS EN 1998-2 primarily covers the seismic design of bridges inwhich the horizontal seismic actions are mainly resisted throughbending of the piers or at the abutments; i.e. of bridgescomposed of vertical or nearly vertical pier systems supportingthe traffic deck superstructure. It is also applicable to the seismicdesign of cable-stayed and arched bridges, although itsprovisions should not be considered as fully covering these cases.

BS EN 1998-4 specifies principles and application rules for theseismic design of the structural aspects of facilities composed ofabove-ground and buried pipeline systems and of storage tanksof different types and uses, as well as for independent items, such as single water towers serving a specific purpose, or groupsof silos enclosing granular materials, etc.

BS EN 1998-4 includes the additional criteria and rules requiredfor the seismic design of these structures without restrictions ontheir size, structural types and other functional characteristics. Forsome types of tanks and silos, it also provides detailed methodsof assessment and verification rules.

BS EN 1998-3:2005 Eurocode 8. Design of structures forearthquake resistance. Assessment and retrofitting ofbuildings

Although assessment and retrofitting of existing structures fornon-seismic actions is not yet covered by the relevant material-dependent Eurocodes, BS EN 1998-3 was specifically developedbecause:

• For many older structures, seismic resistance was notconsidered during the original construction, whereasnon-seismic actions were catered for, at least by meansof traditional construction rules

• Seismic hazard evaluations in accordance with presentknowledge may indicate the need for retrofitting campaigns

• Damage caused by earthquakes may create the need formajor repairs.

BS EN 1998-5 establishes the requirements, criteria, and rules for the siting and foundation soil of structures for earthquakeresistance. It covers the design of different foundation systems, the design of earth retaining structures and soil-structureinteraction under seismic actions. As such it complementsEurocode 7 which does not cover the special requirements of seismic design.

The provisions of Part 5 apply to buildings (BS EN 1998-1), bridges (BS EN 1998-2),towers, masts and chimneys (BS EN 1998-6), silos, tanks and pipelines (BS EN 1998-4).

BS EN 1998-5 also contains empirical charts for simplified evaluation ofliquefaction potential and gives a simplified procedure for seismic analysis ofretaining structures.
