SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Anew study documents a loss of 1.3million acres of grassland over afive-year period in the WesternCorn Belt - a rate not seen sincethe 1920s and 1930s.

The research by ChristopherWright and Michael Wimberly ofthe Geographic InformationScience Center of Excellence atSouth Dakota State Universitysaid a recent doubling in commodi-ty prices has created incentives forlandowners in South Dakota,North Dakota, Nebraska,Minnesota and Iowa to convertgrassland to corn and soybeancropping.

''Historically, comparable grass-land conversion rates have notbeen seen in the Corn Belt sincethe 1920s and 1930s, the era ofrapid mechanization of U.S. agri-culture,'' the authors wrote.

The study is published inTuesday's edition of theProceedings of the NationalAcademy of Sciences of the UnitedStates of America.

It found that corn and soy pro-duction has expanded onto margin-al lands with high potential for ero-sion and drought. The authorscompared the land use change ratein the Western Corn Belt to thedeforestation of Brazil, Malaysia,and Indonesia, but Wright said it'sover a much smaller area.

''And we're not talking about apristine landscape like a Brazilianrainforest,'' Wright said.

The researchers say that highcorn and soybean prices, promptedlargely by demand for biofuel feed-stocks, are driving the change.Growers groups say the increaseddemand for their crops is alsospurred by the rising internationalneed for protein sources, andAmerican farmers are doing allthey can to keep up with the sky-rocketing demand.

The analysis identifies areaswith elevated rates of grass-to-cornand grass-to-soy conversion, rang-ing from 1 percent to 5.4 percentannually. Grassland conversionbetween 2006 and 2011 was mostlyconcentrated in North Dakota andSouth Dakota, east of the MissouriRiver. In Minnesota and theDakotas, this expansion was con-

centrated near wetlands, posing athreat to waterfowl breeding habi-tats.

The percentages don't appearlarge during a single year, butwhen they accumulate over alonger period, it could mean theloss of hundreds of thousands ofacres, said Eric Lindstrom, aBismarck, N.D.-based governmentaffairs representative for DucksUnlimited.

''We've been very concernedabout the accelerated loss of nativeprairie,'' Lindstrom said.

The conservation organization issupporting the Protect OurPrairies Act, a U.S. House billintroduced last week by Rep. KristiNoem, R-S.D., and Tim Walz, D-Minn.

The bill would conserve nativegrasslands by reducing crop insur-ance for the first four years onnewly broken native sod or grass-lands.

Ducks Unlimited also would likefederal crop insurance subsidiesbased on the productivity of theland versus incentivizing wetlanddrainage and habitat destruction.

In their study, the South DakotaState researchers found some dif-fering trends when looking atstate-level data.

In the Dakotas and Minnesota,grassland conversion was concen-trated on relatively high-qualityland, suggesting that land ownersare seeking higher rates of returnby moving from livestock ranchingto growing corn and soybean.

In Minnesota, the researchersfound that much of the grasslandconversion was on lands withexcessive wetness, pointing to alikely increase in the use of man-made drainage systems.

Grassland conversion in Iowawas concentrated on less suitableland, likely reflecting a relativelack of higher quality land avail-able for growing more corn andsoybeans. The change in Nebraskafocused on lands highly unsuited tocrop production, suggesting anincrease in irrigation in southwestNebraska.

The authors say that their find-ings may have implications for theregion's land productivity, carbonsequestration, biodiversity, floodrisk and vulnerability to drought.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — ASoutheast Iowa farmer has come up with asurprising solution to the high cost of cattlefeed.

Bob Batey, of Mount Pleasant, says his 50cows devour the sawdust mixture he feedsthem.

The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports thatBatey, who is 85, stumbled upon the idea inthe 1970s when he noticed cows eating saw-dust that had washed into their pasture froma nearby paper mill.

Experiments on his farm led him to discov-er a way to treat and cook sawdust thatresults in a digestible feed cows find tasty. Ithas a nutritional value equivalent to grasshay.

Veterinarian Tara Wellman-Gerdes of WestPoint confirms Batey's cows are healthy.

The drought created a shortage of corn andhay, causing prices to jump for livestockfarmers.

Missouri SenateEndorses Bill LettingKids Work on Farm

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Childrenyounger than 16 could avoid future federalregulation and continue to work on their par-ent's farm under a bill scheduled for a votethis week in Missouri's Senate.

In 2012, the federal government proposedrules that would have prevented childrenfrom doing certain agricultural work. Theplans were scrapped after opposition fromlawmakers, but Missouri's Senate is lookingto pass a law just in case.

The Senate measure would exempt chil-dren from getting a work certificate and fromlimitations on the number of hours and daysthey can work. Children would only need theconsent of their parents to work on the fami-ly's farm.

The measure sponsored by RepublicanSen. Brian Munzlinger, of Williamstown,received initial approval last week, but needsone more vote before moving to the House.

Bureau of LandManagementMoving Wild Horsesto Montana Ranch

BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — The Bureau of LandManagement (BLM) says it's proceedingwith a plan to move 700 wild horses to aranch in southwestern Montana.

The Montana Standard reports the firsttruckloads of horses are due to arrive at the15,000-acre Spanish Q Ranch northwest ofEnnis as early as Wednesday. BLM officialssay all the horses are expected to be at theranch by March 18.

The Spanish Q has a 10-year contract withthe BLM to house the horse at a cost of $1.36per animal per day, much less than the aver-age $5.50 cost at short-term facilities inWyoming, Colorado, Nevada, Utah andOklahoma

The ranch will hold horses that have beencaptured to control population levels on pub-lic land and have not been adopted.

Feedlots,MeatpackersClosing With Fewer U.S. CowsRoxana Hegeman, Associated Press

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Years of droughtare reshaping the beef industry as feedlotsand a major meatpacking plant close becausethere are too few cattle left to supply them.

Some feedlots in major cattle-producingstates have been dismantled, and others aresitting empty. Operators say they don'texpect a recovery anytime soon, with highfeed prices, much of the country in droughtand a long time needed to rebuild herds.

For consumers, the impact will be felt ingrocery and restaurant bills.

Amarillo broker Dick Bretz says most ofthe bad news is in Texas. That is where thereare the most empty feedlots, the most inter-est in selling and the least interest in buy-ing.

Most experts estimate the cattle feedingindustry now has an excess capacity of 20 to25 percent.

Total Number ofNebraska FarmsDeclines Slightly

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The total numberof Nebraska farms and ranches declinedslightly in 2012.

The federal Agriculture Department saysthe total slid to 46,700 last year. That's downfrom the previous year's 46,800 and 2010's47,200.

In Nebraska, the average farm size was974 acres last year, compared with 972 theyear before.

The number of farms with less than$100,000 in agricultural sales declined by1,200 farms while the number of farms withmore than $100,000 in sales grew by 1,100.

House Approves$6.9M Factory &Farm Tax BreakJeff Amy, Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Factories, farm-ers and fishermen could stop paying salestaxes on electricity and fuel, under a stateHouse proposal.

Representatives passed House Bill 844 bya 75-43 vote Monday to exempt those groupsfrom a 1.5 percent sales tax on fuel used inproducing those industries' products.

The tax break would cost more than $6.9million, under projections from the stateDepartment of Revenue.

House members are likely to consider a $45million a year tax break to exempt manufac-turers from the state's franchise tax soon.

Supporters of the bill, say many otherstates don't tax energy use in production.They say Mississippi would be more attrac-tive for new factories without the tax.

Opponents say the state can't afford to sur-render tax revenues when it's struggling tofund existing programs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The FebruaryUSDA Agricultural Outlook Forum 2013was highlighted by a big focus on the2012 drought. Emphasized were themany effects of the drought alreadyknown, along with some still anticipated,and then of course the big question inregard to the weather outlook. There is aconcern of the residual effects into 2013,but the standard for the forum is to lookat the year projecting trend line yields,assuming normal weather. This resultedin bearish USDA projections for 2013 newcrop corn and soybean prices.

The retail food price outlook for 2013was generally expected to see a 3 percentto 4 percent rise as a historical residualeffect of the higher commodity prices in2012 and early 2013. Highlighted byRichard Volpe, economist with the USDAEconomic Research Service, were thesmaller retail food price effects of bigcommodity price volatility, including theaddition of the big corn usage for ethanolover the past 8 years. This is a topic thatcritics of corn used to produce ethanolhave made, along with some myth mediastories that retail food prices have soaredor will soar. Interesting to note, veg-etable prices were down in 2012 as anaggregate and are not projected to be upin 2013. The USDA Programs emphasiz-ing nutrition were part of the displays atthe forum, so they received an economicboost as well as the food science healthboost.

The future of our new and bigger ageconomy was one of the themes through-out the many forum sessions. AgSecretary Tom Vilsack, Deputy SecretaryKathleen Merrigan and Chief EconomistJoe Glauber started out the conference,with Tom Daschle as the distinguishedguest speaker. Highlighted was the pointthat everyone in ag needs to work togeth-er for a better future. The ingenuity andtechnology advancements in U.S.Agriculture are having and will continueto have global effects to improve life. Thisremains a positive time for ag, eventhough we have seen this devastatingdrought year domestically. The U.S. rolein world agriculture has never been moreimportant. Secretary Vilsack did men-tion the upcoming sequestering as anitem that likely will affect timely USDAvital items, but did not elaborate on hismanagement of this potential and realchallenge.

U.S. Energy Information AdministratorAdam Sieminski was the evening dinnerspeaker on Thursday. It was a personableand open talk about the big changes intechnology increasing U.S. Natural Gasand oil production to a point whereexporting liquid natural gas is now possi-ble. As far as the expansion to E85 andE15 blended gas, there did not appear tobe much of an agenda, which was disap-pointing to the ag community. Jokingly-serious, there were a few questions aboutwhy gas prices are "so darn high" in thedinner crowd. Administrator Sieminskinoted that our gas prices between $3 and$4 are good compared to Europe andJapan. The tone in the ag community atthis time is that more should be done tolower gas prices, including makingethanol and biodiesel more accessible tothe public, especially currently when itwould effectively lower fuel prices domes-tically. The infrastructure to make thathappen is extensive and did not appear tobe a near term emphasis.

Bryan Durkin, COO of the CME Group,David Baudler, Cargill AGHorizons pres-ident, and Scott H. Irwin, ag marketingPh.D. at the University of Illinois took onsome market and futures industry hottopics consisting of a focus on the integri-ty of the markets and the science of themarkets needed for them to work. Theneed for newly interpreted Dodd-Frankregulation that has been discussed in theindustry did not hold water in regard toany evidence of harm that needs to befixed. The MFGlobal Inc. and PFG messwas briefly brought up as an item thatstill needs to be properly addressed, butnew regulation on smaller firms orincreased capitol for the public, likefarmers, would be a problem, not a solu-tion. The Justice Department is 16months into the MFGlobal Inc. investiga-tion, and the industry still has hope jus-tice will be done and the public will havetheir money returned.

In regards to price protection for farm-ers, crop insurance is the main answer.There is comfort by the USDA and thepublic that insurance is doing the job.Incidentally, the new crop February aver-age for crop revenue insurance to date forcorn is $5.69 and $12.96 for beans. Andstill bad news for the western corn beltand western U.S., where the weather out-look for the spring calls for persistentdrought.

Highlights of the USDA AgriculturalOutlook Forum 2013

DENVER (AP) — Colorado lawmakersThursday rejected a proposal that wouldhave required genetically engineered foodto be labeled, amid fears that the mandatewould burden farmers and raise foodprices.

A Democratic House committee voted 7-2against the bill after more than five hoursof emotional testimony from mothers seek-ing labels and farmers saying the require-ment would hurt them. The lawmakersultimately sided with farm groups thatsaid the change would need to be done on afederal level and not by an individualstate.

''That's a price Washington should notask one state's citizens to bear,'' concludedRep. Kathleen Conti, R-Littleton.

More than 60 countries require geneti-cally modified foods to be labeled, but theU.S. isn't one of them. Only Alaska hasenacted legislation requiring the labelingof genetically engineered fish and shellfishproducts.

The federal government and dozens morestates are considering similar labelrequirements amid complaints from con-sumers that genetically engineered foodsmay be unsafe.

''Who's going to protect us? Who's goingto let us know what's in our food?'' askedMarie Weller, a Colorado Springs mother ofthree who brought her daughters and sonto the hearing.

The bill's sponsor, Democratic Rep.Jeanne Labuda of Denver, said consumersdeserve to know more about how their foodis produced.

''People want to know what's in the foodthat we're eating,'' said Labuda, whoargued that food producers already have tolabel foods containing certain additives orallergens, so an added GMO label should-n't be a burden.

''For some reason, we are not affordedthat same information when it comes togenetically engineered foods,'' Labudasaid. ``We consumers deserve to know thatinformation.''

Lawmakers also heard from a wheatfarmer who said genetically modified foodscan require fewer pesticides and lesswater, and that label requirementswouldn't help consumers but would burdenfood producers.

WAUSA, Neb. — It’s anantique store, except nothing isfor sale.

It’s a museum, but thenagain, most of the history ofthe artifacts has to be recitedby the shop’s founder, DwightBloomquist.

He should know. Most of itcame from his family.

"The What's It Shop," as ithas become known, has a namethat fits it perfectly.

"It’s a little bit of every-thing," Bloomquist said."People would come in and say,'Well, what is it?' so I thoughtI'd just go with that."

Located on the Main Street ofWausa between two bars, theshop features the collections ofBloomquist and his family’sprevious generations.

The basement is occupied byhis nephew, Paul Bloomquist,who is an electrician andplumber.

Just about anything can beviewed in neatly arranged

rows, such as cookie jars, but-ter churns, religious artifacts,washing machines, theaterchairs and artifacts, dishes,signs, sewing machines, beautyshop items, newspapers andyearbooks, horse tack andcountless other items.

It even includes machinery,such as restored tractors and afiretruck. Many of the itemsare more than 100 years old —and most of them still work.

If they weren’t in workingorder, Bloomquist can fix them.He grew up in an era when peo-ple had to be able to fix thingsthemselves because there usu-ally weren’t replacement parts,he said.

Many of the items are relatedto agriculture.

"It started out when mygrandpa bought this farm in1899," he said. "It's been in thefamily ever since."

Nobody ever had a farm sale,including Dwight’s son, Scott,who currently farms the sameland. Someday, Scott's son,Jeff, likely will be the one totake over the farm after him.

"Grandpa didn’t sell any-thing," Dwight said, "so I justkept that stuff. A lot of it isfrom grandpa and my dad. Weneeded some place to put it."

When a business on Wausa’sMain Street came up for salearound 2000, Bloomquist said

he and his nephew decided topurchase it.

His nephew keeps his busi-ness operating out of the base-ment, but he isn’t interested inthe items upstairs, Bloomquistsaid.

"I give tours for anyone whowants to come and look," hesaid. "That’s what I have itthere for."

Bloomquist said he wants tohave younger generationslearn about the past.

Last summer, there was a"farm day" as part of thelibrary’s summer reading pro-gram. The children got to seethe The What’s It Shop anddemonstrations, such as cornbeing shelled from an antiquesheller.

They also got to go ride on anold country school merry-go-round and see how previousgenerations had fun.

Looking at the tools andmachines, it is amazing howmuch easier life has become foreach generation.

"And at the time, theythought they had it good,"Bloomquist said, noting howlabor intensive some of themachines were, such as an oldwashing machine that wasturned by crank, or a motorand belt if a family waswealthy enough.

Many scientists say the labels aren'tuseful because genetically modified orengineered foods are safe. California vot-ers last year rejected a statewide labelingrequirement.

The American Association for theAdvancement of Science - publisher ofScience magazine - has said geneticallyengineered food is no different from con-ventional foods and that labels for GMO,or genetically modified organisms, would''mislead and falsely alarm consumers.''

One of Colorado's members of Congresshas suggested a national labeling law.Democratic Rep. Jared Polis has saidconsumers need the information.

Labuda said she wasn't sure whether alabel requirement would boost foodprices. But she said the requirement isworthwhile as consumers face stores fullof produce that seems to have changedover the years. Labuda talked about see-ing fresh tomatoes in the dead of winter.

''All I know is, they don't taste liketomatoes,'' she said.

(AP) — The director of anew safety initiative at the University ofNebraska Medical Center expects its atten-tion to such agricultural hazards as dust,noise and sleep deprivation to strike a blowagainst the deaths and injuries that makefarming the most dangerous occupation inthe United States.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports thatRisto Rautiainen of the Central StatesCenter for Agricultural Safety and Health inOmaha isn't satisfied with statistics thatshow a decrease in fatalities nationally from3,300 in the 1960s to 550 in 2011.

''No, I think we need to make a lot moreprogress,'' said Rautiainen, who has a Ph.D.in occupational and environmental healthand about a dozen team members who devoteall or much of their time to farm safetyissues.

Omaha is the newest of nine regional cen-ters that recently earned praise from anindependent review that cited them as a low-budget, high-impact way to make the lives offarm and ranch families safer. Their work,also aimed at risks to rural kids, is under theorganizational umbrella of the NationalInstitute for Occupational Safety andHealth.

In Nebraska, 15 to 20 people die in farmaccidents every year. With 60 to 70 indus-tries taken into account, ''that's the biggestgroup,'' Rautiainen said, ''and truck driverson the interstate are the other big group.''

Tractors with rollover protection, shieldson moving machinery parts and growingsafety awareness are among the reasons thetoll of deaths and injuries is in decline. But itisn't hard to find crop and livestock produc-ers in Southeast Nebraska who have hadfirsthand experience with serious accidents.

Jon Propst's father broke his hip, sufferedother serious injuries and spent 39 days inthe hospital when he got entangled in apower take-off shaft near Seward in the1960s.

Much more recently, Rod Hollman ofMartell had an unpleasant encounter withan Angus cow and her strong motheringinstinct.

''Just last spring, I was tagging a babycalf,'' Hollman said, ''and the cow got behindme and knocked me through a barbed wirefence.''

A log of accidents kept by the safety andhealth center for its seven-state territory -Nebraska, the Dakotas, Kansas, Minnesota,Iowa and Missouri - tracks mayhem inthumbnail descriptions like this one:

''28-FEB-12 Crete, male, 33, fatal.Entangled in sweep auger within grain binon family farm.''

Propst and Hollman agree farming isn't asdangerous as it was decades ago.

''Equipment manufacturers have seen howfarmers get hurt, and they've addressedthose problems quite a bit,'' said Propst, alsoa rural firefighter and first responder tomedical emergencies.

In his area, he said, ''There's not been amajor farm accident that I can think of in 10years.''

But the occupational niche farmers occupypresents some special challenges, and envi-ronmental hazards such as inhaling dust areamong them.

Todd Wyatt, core director for research atthe safety center, said the hog producers of ageneration ago didn't work in confinementbarns ''and they didn't spend all day longwith the pigs.''

Now that they do, ''components from dustin the swine barn actually slows down thecilia,'' the tiny hair-like projections that pro-tect nasal passages and other parts of therespiratory system.

Working in confined settings, on steep ter-rain, with augers, agricultural chemicalsand unpredictable livestock, on top of andinside grain bins - and working alone inremote settings - are risk factors that aren'tovercome easily.

Plus, Propst said, farmers are responsiblefor more acres.

''We've got more to do so we're in a biggerhurry.''

Roger Hoy, director of the tractor testinglab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,said there was a new problem to contendwith, too - boredom.

''Before we had all these computers, farm-ers would actually drive the tractor.''

Now, because of global positioning systems,he said, ''a good portion of the time, a farmeris only there in case something goes wrong orto turn the tractor around at the end of arow.''

Since the mid-1980s, rollover protectionhas been standard on new tractors. But sur-veys suggest many of the tractors still per-forming farm chores are from as far back asthe 1930s and 1940s.

''A lot of those tractors are still running,and there's no rollover protection on them,''Hoy said.

Part of the injury surveillance evidenceaccumulating at the agricultural safety cen-ter in Omaha, Director Rautiainen said,points to the absence on farms and ranchesof safety standards enforced in ag businesssettings by the Occupational Safety andHealth Administration.

''Farmers working alone,'' he said, ''nobodytelling them what to do, many times take arisk that, in other industries, wouldn't bedone.''

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakotaexports increased by about $900 million in2012 led by strong global sales of agricultur-al and construction machinery and a recordvolume of crude that was shipped to Canadabefore returning to the U.S. by pipeline.

Federal Commerce Department statisticsshow the state's exports totaled $4.2 billionlast year. That's up from $3.4 billion in 2011and $2.5 billion in 2010.

The biggest increase in export value camefrom oil shipments, which jumped from $741million in 2011 to $1.3 billion last year.

Data show wheat exports last year werevalued at $164 million. That was down 15percent from 2011.

University of Neb.Will Offer CropScout Training

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The University ofNebraska-Lincoln announces it will offer acrop scout training workshop for pest man-agers.

University specialists will teach workshopattendees on March 13 how to better managecorn and soybean pests.

The workshop will cover how to protectcorn and soybeans from insects, disease andweeds. Attendees will be tested on how toidentify potentially threating bugs andweeds. Participants will also receive a take-home instructional manual on crop manage-ment.

The workshop will be held near Mead atthe university's Agricultural Research andDevelopment Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The daylongtraining costs $125. Lunch will be provided.

Company Wants toSpread Hog PlantWaste in Fields

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A Minnesotacompany is looking to spread up to 19,000tons a year of byproduct from the JohnMorrell hog processing plant in Sioux Fallsacross farm fields around South Dakota.

The dried, treated wastewater byproductcurrently goes to the landfill.

On Monday, the Minnehaha County plan-ning commission will take up a conditional-use permit application from Austin, Minn.-based Environmental Land Management,the Argus Leader reported.

The county planning staff is recommend-ing the permit be denied, saying it's likelythat the proposed use would constitute a nui-sance for surrounding properties with resi-dences.

''The proposed use has the potential forodors, additional heavy traffic during thetransportation of the material and attractingnuisance animals and insects,'' the staff saidin the report.

The John Morrell wastewater is sent toanaerobic digesters, in which microorgan-isms break down the biodegradable material.It then goes through a dissolved air flotationsystem that removes suspended oils andsolids before being dewatered on a belt press.

Michael Klema, Environmental LandManagement's director of business develop-ment, said what emerges ''looks like used cof-fee grounds.'' He said it does not have anodor, and he plans to bring a sample to theMinnehaha County planning commissionmeeting to prove that claim.

Klema characterized the byproduct as avaluable and free fertilizer supplementrather than a waste product to be sent to thelandfill.

''Only a certain amount of lucky farmersare going to get a sniff of it,'' he said. ''There'snot enough to go around.''

Klema said the company needs conditional-use permits in Lincoln and Minnehaha coun-ties before it can seek solid waste permitsfrom the state Department of Environmentand Natural Resources (DENR). The compa-ny also wants to haul the material to fields inHanson and McCook counties, which do notrequire conditional-use permits.

Jim Wendte, an engineer with the DENRsolid waste management program, said thestate agency has about a decade's worth ofexperience dealing with products such as theone ELM wants to distribute.

He said it's somewhat akin to treatedsewage sludge, which has been spread onfields for decades.

Wendte said he hadn't seen a report detail-ing John Morrell's wastewater byproduct,but he surmised that, ''we would probably bedealing with something that is slightly lessproblematic than municipal sludges.''

Sludge from a municipal sewage plant canaccumulate heavy metals, pharmaceuticalsand pathogens, but the product from JohnMorrell is likely to contain only waste fromprocessed hogs and some cleaning products,Wendte said.

He said that based on DENR's experiencewith similar products, if they're properlyworked into the soil they are unlikely to runoff because of rainfall and are not likely tomigrate down and contaminate groundwater.

Federal ReserveReports IowaFarmland Values Rose

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The FederalReserve Bank of Chicago says its surveyshowed Iowa farmland values rose 20 per-cent during 2012, a year in which the statestruggled with drought.

The bank's survey echoes the Iowa StateUniversity's annual Iowa Land ValueSurvey, which is conducted in November. TheISU survey said the value of an average acreof good Iowa farmland rose almost 24 percentfrom October 2011 to October 2012.

The Gazette reports that the bank's surveyof 212 agricultural banks across the 7thFederal Reserve District found farmland val-ues rose even faster during the last quarterof 2012, as possible tax increases loomed for2013.
