The Old Course at Broken Sound Club has achieved designation as a “Certified AudubonCooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for GolfCourses, an Audubon International program. Joseph Hubbard, Course Superintendent, has led the effort to obtain sanctuary status on this course and is being recognized for

Environmental Stewardship by AudubonInternational.

“To reach certif ication, a course mustdemonstrate that they are maintaining a highdegree of environmental quality in a number ofareas.” These categories include: EnvironmentalPlanning, Wildlife & Habitat Management,Outreach and Education, Chemical UseReduction and Safety, Water Conservation, andWater Quality Management.Joe Hubbard is currently working to obtaincertification for the club course, and weanticipate receiving that certification next year.

a Platinum Club of America, a designationawarded every three years to only the top3 percent of clubs in the country. We werealso recently featured in the newspaper forall of our efforts in “going green” and weare continuing in this process every day.We have seen nominal dues increases overthe past three years and this year again,we will see a minimal increase. We alsohave an outstanding staff with minimalturnover, and this relationship betweenmembers and staff is why we have thereputation as being the “friendly” club.

All of these accomplishments could not havebeen possible without the Board, Committeemembers, the members of this club andthe staff. It is certainly a tribute to eachand every one of you because yourcontributions have allowed Broken Soundto achieve a great deal in a relatively shortperiod of time. We know there will alwaysbe issues that we will contend with, but evenif we make mistakes, we learn from themquickly and try to never make them again.

Someone once said “it’s not the destinationbut the journey” and Broken Sound’s journeyhas been an exciting one, with the normalbumps along the way, but also one thatcontinually moves us forward. Heartfeltcongratulations go to all of you for makingthis club what it is today. Best wishes for ahealthy and happy summer.

Aristotle once said “If you would understandanything, observe its beginning and itsdevelopment.” Broken Sound has gone frombeing a developer owned community withaging facilities and basic but unexciting foodto a Platinum Club of America designee. Many of you remember the growing painsin the turnover from the developers, butwe emerged from that time all the better. We remodeled our facilities and golfcourses which attracted new buyers, andour food and beverage hospitality becamesecond to none. We have receivedaccolades and publicity for awards andongoing projects. During this time Mr.John Crean was fortunate to receive theClub Manager of the Year and Excellencein Club Management awards; I washonored to receive a Club President of theYear award from Boardroom Magazine;our Tennis Director, Greg Wheaton, hasreceived four Player of the Year awards inthe men’s 45 division and created anoutstanding tennis program for adults andjuniors; our Social Director, Al Salkeld, justreceived Broward Center’s Group Leaderof the Year award and our social activitiesare the envy of many; the PGA Senior tourselected Broken Sound for its AllianzChampionship which is televised nationallyfor the three days of the tournament.TheOld Course just became an AudubonSanctuary with the club course to follownext year, and most recently we became

Dear Member,Over this past year we have heard a great deal on the economicdownturn and all the negativity in the news, and we have certainlyseen the effect on clubs in south Florida. In reflecting on how thisaffects Broken Sound, however, we can’t help but feel very positive

The Summer Leagueshave been off andrunning. The Men’sSouth County Leaguejumped out to an earlylead in the standingsand they continue todrive towards the

playoffs at the end of the summer. There has been such an overwhelminginterest in playing in these events.

The Club Course hosted the LadiesSummers Swingers on June 11th. Theweather was perfect. The SummerSwingers play every Thursday at a

different club. These ladies, similar tothe men, get to enjoy playing weekly atdifferent clubs. The ladies also havethe Diamond League which is the nine-hole version of the Summer Swingers.

The Golf Staff is working diligently withthe heads of their respective leaguesin order to have a very competitive andenjoyable tournament season that willbegin in November. As professionalswe hear how other club golf programsare declining while ours are quite theopposite.

MaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenanceWe are well into our days of summerwith heat, humidity and the rains forthis time of year. The course is growingwell so we have established ourmowing boundaries for next season.

Two projects we are working on thissummer. The first one includestransitioning the drain pipes on hole#13 that go into the lakes for CMA’slake erosion controls. This project willeventually affect all holes on the golfcourse over the next three years. Playwill not be affected very much until theydo hole #12 probably next summer inwhich we may have to have to skip thehole for the crew’s safety. This is stillto be determined yet when we get tothat point. The other project isunderway around the practice puttinggreen/driving range area with theinstallation of pavers for steps. The

I would like for youall to welcome ournew addition to thegolf maintenanceteam, Cyndi Brett.Cyndi will be incharge of overseeingour multiple land-scape beds with each

superintendent, doing a “green” inventory forour environmental initiative and plantreplacements as budget dictates. I also will beusing her to help us get the Club CourseAudubon certified in a very short time. Herbackground includes many years in the nurseryand horticulture business. If you want to testher knowledge, just have a chat with hersometime, she is impressive. Also, we have anintern from LSU this summer helping alongsideCyndi, her name is Jessie Carvajal. She will behere until returning to LSU to continue hermajor as a landscape architect. If things workout for everyone all around, we would love forher to continue to come back each summer as anintern to bring her new learned education backto Broken Sound.

Note to all golfers on the Club CourseThe ropes in front of the greens attached withthe round balls are there to keep ALL carts fromcrossing and driving up the approach grass. Thisalso means the handicap players. All carts are toexit to the cartpath and if you’re handicapdesignated, only you are allowed to drive up tothe yellow balls located around the green fromthe cartpath or if there are two balls, the otherside of the green. There are many able bodiedplayers driving to the yellow balls that need tostay on the cart path after reaching the approachropes. The rule is in place to protect the golfcourse for all players and is not subject to selfdetermination.

It has taken a fewyears, but the OldCourse has finally beenawarded the AudubonCooperative Sanctuaryfull certification. Theprocess is explained inanother article

contained in this newsletter but it isno small feat as we become one of107 courses in Florida to accomplishfull certification and the first privateclub in Boca Raton. There will be adisplay in the lobby for you to see thecertif ications and other naturalpictures I have been fortunate tocapture over the past five years ofbeing at Broken Sound.

We have one important project thatwill be begin at the end of June andthe grow-in will continue through Julyand August. That is the redesign ofthe collection area behind #14 green.

In cooperation with Gene Bates, we aregoing to raise the catch basin area tokeep good shots on the green or collararea at the very least.

The Old Course committees felt thatgood quality shots were being penalizedfor hitting such a small target. The areaof sod needed to be cut and removedis vast but we will be utilizing this sodonce the shaping is complete so wecan keep the cost to the minimum.

We also have plans to install a greatdeal more aquatic plants around thelakes and the banks to hide thepermanent water line we now have sothe bare ground wi l l not be asprominent. On an operational note, wehave increased the service of our lakesto include hand pulling of weeds, handspraying up to the grass lines and debrispick up if it gets too unsightly.

Join us for the July 4th celebration aswe change it up. We will divide you

into teams to compete in tennis relatedgames for the fun filled event.

Continental breakfast at 8:00am Round Robin Competition at 9:00am.

This event does require a sign up. A successful tennisplayer knows theeffective procedureof getting into

“match mode” before playing a competitivematch. The importance of starting a matchafter being both fully warmed up andspending ample time in match mode can notbe overestimated! Rushing to the match withonly the official ten minute warm up periodto prepare is absolutely insufficient. Not onlyis it not enough time to get your body readybut you will not be setting yourself up forsuccess mentally, either. Make it a point toarrive in plenty of time so as to spend twentyto thirty minutes warming up and reservethose last ten minutes before the match toassess your opponents instead.

Your warm up is an opportunity to hit mostof the shots, volleys, overheads, forehands, backhands, serves, returns, and approachshots. You should also try to play a few points

to get a sense of how you are feeling andplaying. By the time the official ten minutewarm up begins, you should already havebroken a sweat. Use this time instead to getan idea of your opponents strengths andweakness:

· Does your opponent have good volleysor is he/she better at the baseline?· Does your opponent take any volley oroverhead practice?· Does your opponent have a good serve?· Does your opponent move well?..etc….Assess the weather conditions:· Is it windy?· Which direction is the wind blowing?· Who will be serving in the sun?

A thorough warm up is imperative, but don’tneglect your intellectual preparations andopportunity to establish a preliminary gameplan. Use this information to get a properwarm up and get into “match mode.”
