Environmental Science and Engineering at TrinityThe School of Natural Sciences is engaged withsolving some of the major challenges facing humansociety through teaching, research and partnershipwith industry and policy development, bothnationally and globally. Research on biodiversity, climate action, peatlands, marine ecosystems, sustainable cities, environmental governance andthe sustainable use of Earth’s natural resources areall areas of expertise. The School comprises of thedisciplines of Botany, Geography, Geology andZoology and two research centres, both with strongenvironmental focus.

Trinity's School of Engineering was founded in 1841and is one of the oldest engineering schools in theEnglish speaking world. The Baccalaureus in ArteIngeniaria (BAI) degree was established in 1872 andearly graduates played a major role in thedevelopment of government services and infra-structure in 19th century Ireland, India, Australia,Africa and Japan. Trinity is ranked in the top 120 inthe world for studying Engineering (QS World SubjectRankings 2020).

Together, both Schools offer an exceptionally vibrant,multi-disciplinary community of innovativeresearchers and teachers who provide students thebreadth and depth of knowledge and understandingneeded to address some of the most pressingenvironmental challenges facing Ireland and theworld. The degree ensures that graduates can make

complex connections from the design of windfarmsto maintaining wildflower meadows, from thetechnical underpinning of solar power generation tothe creation of clean water, from sustainableseaweed farming, to novel negative carbon emissiontechnologies and from coastal protection to sea levelrise. This course covers a wide range of essentialtopics before specialisation in one of two streams –Environmental Engineering or AppliedEnvironmental Science.

Graduate skills and career opportunitiesGraduates will have a strong grounding inEnvironmental Science in conjunction with appliedEngineering skills and problem-solving capability.Students will therefore be at the forefront ofinitiatives to address the challenges set out withinthe United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Graduates of Environmental Science andEngineering will be highly skilled and employablein both industrial and governmental organisationsin Ireland as well as overseas; recent graduatesfrom the Civil Engineering stream who havespecialised in Environmental Engineering areworking in R&D, Civil Engineering andEnvironmental Consultancies, Project Engineers,Environmental Regulation, Energy companies, mining companies as well as setting-up newventures and spin outs.

What is EnvironmentalScience and Engineering?Environmental Science and Engineering is a newintegrated five-year course consisting of a fouryear B.Sc. plus an additional year of study leadingto either a Master in Engineering (Studies) M.A.I.(St.) or a M.Sc. in Applied Environmental Science.

The B.Sc /M.A.I. M.Sc degree programme is basedon two foundation years of environmental scienceand engineering modules, providing students witha firm grounding in the principles common to bothdisciplines, followed by three years of specialisation(in either environmental science or environmentalengineering). Students therefore complete anintegrated five-year course consisting of a four yearB.Sc. plus an additional year of study leading toeither a Master in Engineering (Studies) M.A.I. (St.)specialising in Environmental Engineering or aM.Sc. in Applied Environmental Science or a MAI inEnvironmental Engineering.

The programme offers students the opportunity to tailor their degree in accordance with theiracademic results, interests, aptitudes andemerging career aspirations.

Environmental Science andEngineering: The course for you?The degree in Environmental Science andEngineering is taught by scientists in the Schoolof Natural Sciences and engineers from theSchool of Engineering. It arises from a uniquecollaboration between two leading TrinitySchools that have expertise across a wide rangeof subject areas from Environmental Science toCivil, Structural and Environmental Engineeringand is one of the first of its kind in Ireland andinternationally.

The degree structure is designed to provide forthe needs of students with an interest in theseemerging, multi-disciplinary professional andacademic fields. The course provides studentswith a fundamental grounding in natural sciencesand engineering, and in the applied skillsrequired to develop sustainable solutions formajor societal and environmental challenges.

Strong emphasis is placed on students acquiringpractical laboratory and field skills, as well asworking in teams and in industry placements.

Environmental EngineeringThis strand of the Environmental Science andEngineering course places stronger emphasis onmodules and project work with an engineering focusin years 4 and 5.

Applied Environmental ScienceThis strand of the Environmental Science andEngineering course places stronger emphasis onmodules and project work in the discipline ofenvironmental sciences in years 4 and 5.

In Year 4, students have the option to undertake anIndustry Internship or International Exchange in theirchosen stream. These options include Erasmus,UNITECH (as a paid industrial partnership) and

CLUSTER. Full details of available options areavailable from the School of Engineering and Schoolof Natural Sciences office and on their websites.Alternatively, a student can stay for the full year inTrinity and undertake a Capstone Project modulewhich aligns with their chosen stream, in addition toat least 2 optional modules associated with theirchosen stream.

Following completion of the fourth year of theenvironmental science and engineering degreecourse, it is anticipated that most eligible studentswould elect to complete one further year of study intheir chosen strand leading to a M.Sc. or MAI. degree.

Our graduates are also working in the design anddevelopment of environmental solutions withleading engineering consultancies such as ARUP,RPS, ESB International, Shell, IBM. Suchcompanies have a strong demand for high qualitygraduates at the Masters (and PhD) level due tothe high technical level of their work.

Environmental Engineers and Scientists also findemployment in governmental regulatoryorganisations and other institutions such as LocalAuthorities, the Environmental ProtectionAgency, Geological Survey Ireland, Teagsac,Humanitarian NGOs (Concern, GOAL, SelfhelpAfrica), as well as going to further studies andjobs in academia both in Ireland and overseas.

Graduates will possess a unique broad set ofattributes associated with both engineering andnatural sciences graduates (Level 8 and 9) such asanalytical, modelling, problem solving, design, collaborative team working, professional ethics, global perspective and communication skill sets.

They will be able to operate at the forefront ofdevelopments in the environmental field in the

21st century in key areas such as in conservation, monitoring and protection of biodiversity, theprotection of human health through protection ofthe environment, mitigation and adaptation toclimate change and the move towards a zerocarbon future.

Innovation is a core attribute of theEnvironmental Science and Engineeringprogramme which will provide students withskills in design thinking, entrepreneurship andcreativity enabling students the opportunity to beinvolved in exciting, innovative newdevelopments in environmental engineering andsciences in their broadest sense and to considerholistically their impact on the naturalenvironment and our stocks of natural capital(woodlands, peatlands, rivers, mineral resources).

Your degree and what you’ll studyDrawing on the expertise of the School ofEngineering and the School of Natural Science atTrinity, this programme focuses on delivering aresearch-inspired, outcome-based educationalexperience to students.

Students complete an integrated five-year courseconsisting of a four year B.Sc. plus an additionalyear of study leading to a M.Sc. or MAI. During thefirst two years a balanced and integratedprogramme of modules in environmental scienceand engineering is provided.
