2. Professional Information 2.1. Preamble
Civil Engineering is the profession that helps to provide the community with a wide range of
structures for better and easier living conditions. Civil engineering program use mathematics, natural
sciences, engineering and human sciences to assist in providingan easier life for mankind.

2.2. Program Mission and Aims
2.2.1. Program mission
The Civil engineering program aims to graduate civil engineer who is responsible among his
community or society for establishing safe, economic, healthy and convenient accommodation and
other infra-structures, and for every individual in the society. This is achieved through providing him
with basic and applied sciences as well as technical and professional skills within a high quality,
distinctive educational program, hence, such graduate shall be able to keep up with scientific
development in the field of Civil engineering design, construction, and management, and to make
the right decisions to solve engineering problems with the active role in community service and
development of the country. The graduate shall also be able to acquire scientific and practical
experiences that add to his capabilities to take an active role in community service and country
development.
2.2.2. Program Aims
The civil engineering program aims at providing future engineers with appropriate theoretical knowledge and technical skills to respond timely and effectively to professional market demands in the field of civil engineering construction and management.
The following are the aimed graduate engineers able to:
a) Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering concepts to the solution of engineering problems.
b) Design a system; component and process to meet the required needs within realistic constraints.
c) Design and conduct experiments as well as analyze and interpret data. d) Identify, formulate and solve fundamental engineering problems. e) Use the techniques, skills, and appropriate engineering tools, necessary for engineering
practice and project management. f) Work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams. g) Communicate effectively. h) Consider the impacts of engineering solutions on society & environment. i) Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary engineering issues. j) Display professional and ethical responsibilities; and contextual understanding k) Engage in self- and life- long learning. l) Act professionally in design and supervision of civil engineering disciplines m) Use the codes of practice of all civil engineering disciplines effectively and professionally n) Design, construct and protect all types of excavations and tunneling systems for different
purposes o) Manage construction sites p) Select appropriate building materials from the perspective of strength, durability, suitability of
use to location, temperature, weather conditions and impacts of seawater and environment. q) Select and design adequate water control structures, irrigation and water networks, sewerage
systems and pumping stations r) Define and preserve properties (lands, real estates) of individuals, communities and
institutions, through different surveying and GIS tools

The Higher Institute of Engineering has adopted the National Academic Reference Standard,

of Education), issued August 2009

By the end of this program graduates of the Civil Engineering program should be able to:
