Course in Depth

What will I study?In Year 1 you will study the fundamentals of business andmanagement. You will gain an understanding of businessrelationships and processes, management techniques andeconomic markets.

Year 2 enhances your core knowledge of business andmanagement by allowing you to follow a number ofcompulsory modules alongside options enabling you totailor your degree towards your future career planswithin a leisure and tourism environment.

In Year 3 you will study a variety of contemporarybusiness issues with an emphasis on leisure and tourism,in addition to strategic management. You will alsocomplete a piece of independent research through adissertation, or research based project which enables youto work on a relevant, agreed topic of your choice.

How will I study?As well as preparing for and attending lectures, seminars,tutorials and workshops, you will spend time reading andcompleting coursework, including written assignments,presentations and posters.

You will have the opportunity to develop youremployability profile through a work placement orparticipation in a graduate enterprise project. In addition,you will undertake live client projects with organisationsor work on agreed projects with real outcomes andimpact.

How will I be assessed?Throughout the programme, there is a combination ofdifferent forms of assessment to test intellectualdevelopment, vocational capability and critical thinking.Coursework involves individual and group-basedactivities, case studies and problem-solving exercises.Examinations take a variety of forms, using both seen andunseen questions.

Who will be teaching me?All of our staff are passionate about student learning anddevelopment. This degree is developed by specialists inleisure and tourism, accountancy, e-commerce, humanresource management, marketing, operationsmanagement, people management, and small andmedium enterprises. Year 1BUS1012: Business Economics (20 credits)Business Economics covers the basic principles of micro- and macro-economics. The micro element will provide atheoretical base, and thus allow for the study of organisational behaviour in the marketplace. The macro element willequip you with an understanding of the broader national and international environment in which business operates.

BUS1013: Introduction to Accounting and Statistics (20 credits)Introduction to Accounting and Statistics focuses on the development and interpretation of financial and statisticsinformation to be used in the context of personal skills development and an understanding of business. The moduleintroduces you to basic accounting statements including the statement of financial position; the income statement andcash flow statements and forecasts.

BUS1014: People and Organisations (20 credits)People and Organisations provides a comprehensive foundation to the study of management from both theoreticaland practical perspectives. The module seeks to consider the conceptual frameworks relevant to the behaviour ofindividuals and groups in organisations and examine the issues which are raised in their management. The modulefocuses on three themes: rational modes of management, people strategies and contemporary issues in the workplace.

BUS1015: Operations Management (20 credits)Operations Management is centred on the recognition that resources are scarce and that choices must be madebetween the alternatives available. The module outlines how organisations seek to ensure output is achieved assmoothly, efficiently and profitably as possible.

BUS1016: Marketing for Business (20 credits)Marketing for Business equips you with an appreciation of marketing as one of the central functions of any businessand at the heart of any organisation’s activities. This module provides an introduction to marketing and demonstrates itsimportance to business decision making.

The module will provide you with an awareness ofemergent business types and their markets and the factors behind small business start-ups, entry routes, funding andbarriers.

BUS1018: Statistics for Economics (20 credits)Statistics for Economics provides you with an understanding of, and an ability to apply, a range of mathematical andstatistical concepts and techniques suited to a variety of economic situations. Descriptive statistics and techniquesused for summarising and analysing data are fundamental to the work of business and economics professionals andwill allow you to present information to a wide range of participants. BUS1019: Information and the Organisation (20 credits)Information and the Organisation provides an insight into how organisations are creating, collating and making use ofinformation for a range of purposes. Information has been described as the currency of the 21st century; unlike aphysical good it increases not decreases in value as supply increases. The module will examine how businesses manageorganisational processes, provide services, track the behaviour of consumers and forecast demand for products andservices. This comes at a cost and you will also consider the ethical issues around a world where your movements,habits and hobbies can be quantified, anticipated, profiled and packaged for profit.

BUS1031: Introduction to Digital Marketing (20 credits)Introduction to Digital Marketing recognises that the ubiquity of the internet has changed much of our consumptionand has also affected marketing substantially. The module introduces a broad range of topics in the area of digitalmarketing including website marketing, social media marketing, e-commerce and digital advertising. You will examinehow organisations can best use digital marketing to influence consumers and customers, discuss theoretical conceptsand apply them to the development of digital marketing strategy, and identify issues related to the planning, design andimplementation of digital marketing.

Language modules, delivered at the Edge Hill Language Centre, are available to study as an integral part of this degree.A single Language module can be studied instead of one of the optional modules above.

Year 2BUS2017: Research Methods for Business (20 credits)Research Methods for Business are crucial to personal, academic and vocational development. Employers areincreasingly looking for graduates who have specific skills, including those significantly developed through learningabout methods of research. This module introduces these methods and considers how they are required to undertakespecific academic projects, enhance knowledge and understanding, and address specific business issues and practicalmanagerial problems.

BUS2018: Managing the Human Resource (20 credits)Managing the Human Resource is concerned with developments in human resource management since the early1980s and current people management practice. In keeping with the management discipline in general, there havebeen a number of significant developments in the management of people over the last few decades, not least with themove away from Personnel Management to Human Resource Management. The module will take a practical yetintegrated approach, as required by today's HR professionals.

LTM2010: Introduction to Leisure and Tourism (20 credits)Introduction to Leisure and Tourism provides a theoretical basis for understanding the nature of leisure and tourismand for the identification of key issues, problems and trends within these sectors. The module considers thedevelopment of leisure and tourism, the role of different providers, the importance of leisure to different communitiesand the spaces in which leisure takes place. You will examine the economic, social and cultural significance of leisureand tourism and seek to ascertain not only the current importance of leisure and tourism but also how trends mayindicate the future of these industries.

LTM2011: Leisure and Tourism Planning (20 credits)Leisure and Tourism Planning examines the role of public policy (at central and local government levels) and theplanning processes which have a major impact on leisure and tourism, not only in terms of public sector provision butin shaping the political, economic, social and environmental conditions within which the whole sector operates. It is an opportunity tohone employability skills, relate theory to practice and gain experience in a working environment. The module isdesigned to enhance your understanding, skill-base, personal development, aptitude for self-promotion and ability toreflect upon your experience in the workplace. It will also help familiarise you with professional business etiquette.

BUS2020: Graduate Enterprise (20 credits)Graduate Enterprise enables you to experience running your own company with a number of your colleagues. You cancreate your own product or service, launch it into the marketplace and experience at first hand the issues faced bysmall business owners. You will be supported by your own business consultant who is on secondment from industryand the full resources of the Graduate Enterprise Company.

The module will enable you to improve your competitiveness at a global level. Project management is anarea of study that recognises that resources are scarce and that choices must be made between the alternativesavailable in terms of bringing a project to a satisfactory finish, both on time and within budget. BUS2023: Quality Management (20 credits)Quality Management provides you with an understanding of the importance of total quality management which is anessential aspect of every organisation, both manufacturing and service industries, in order to survive in a competitiveenvironment. The essence of total quality management is a dedication to understanding what the customer wants andthen employing resources including people to set up systems and processes to deliver products and services thatensure customer satisfaction and comply with government quality standards.

BUS2024: Managing People (20 credits)Managing People focuses on the drive to privatisation and marketisation that accelerated from 1979 in the UK andshortly after in the USA. The nature of work, as experienced by employees, also changed with significant increases inflexible work patterns and the increasing importance of service sector employment. Hence, the repertoire of skillsrequired of those involved in managing people continues to expand. The purpose of the module is to provide you with acritical understanding of the changing nature of work, as well as raising your awareness of the practical strategies usedby organisations to manage such changes.

BUS2026: Global Corporate Social Responsibility (20 credits)Global Corporate Social Responsibility examines how the global marketplace presents challenges for organisations tobalance the social, economic and environmental components of their business, while building shareholder value.Organisations that choose to ignore this responsibility risk their futures, reputations and profits and it is thereforeimperative that the modern manager is aware of the various ethical issues that may have an impact upon theirorganisation and devise mechanisms of regulation and control to deal with them. You will examine the pressures fromvarious sources to engage in ethical behaviour. You will also consider ways in which companies can structure theirresponse to these pressures and reflect upon the implications for both business and society of a business ignoring itsethical responsibilities.

BUS2027: Intermediate Economic Analysis (20 credits)Intermediate Economic Analysis enables you to develop a deeper understanding of economic concepts, such assupply, demand, price and elasticity. The module also introduces new concepts in both micro and macro-economicanalysis. Crucially, micro and macro-economic analysis will be applied to business scenarios. Micro theory will beapplied to goods, labour and financial markets. On macro, models of equilibrium in goods and money markets will becovered, as well as the development of analysis of the main economic indicators, economic policies and the widereconomic situation.

BUS2029: Leadership Culture and Change (20 credits)Leadership Culture and Change explores the nature of leadership and management roles within an environmentcharacterised by change and cultural and organisational diversity. At an organisational level, the module considers howfar organisational culture and change can be influenced by leaders and managers. At a national level, it considers hownational cultures influence leadership styles and the process of change. Both large-scale organisations and small andmedium sized enterprises will be examined, including an analysis of contemporary trends in these areas.

BUS2030: Finance and Performance Management (20 credits)Finance and Performance Management will develop your financial knowledge and examine the management of abusiness with a specific focus on the management of finance within the business context. You will investigate theprocesses used to develop information to inform managerial decision making. The module will examine how differentbusiness types use financial data in the measurement of their performance. It will also look at real time companyinformation and decision making and evaluate the significance of the decisions. A key activity will involve investigatingthe measurement of financial performance of a business through analysing and comparing the models available.

BUS2031: Retail Marketing Planning (20 credits)Retail Marketing Planning recognises that effective marketing planning is essential for all organisations. This moduleoffers you the opportunity to place tactical marketing activities in the context of the marketing planning process.Specifically, this module provides you with the opportunity to examine the complex nature of marketing planning fororganisations in the retail sector which constitutes a dynamic and vital element of the British economy.

More and more companies are now heavily investing in marketing analytics. Therefore, analysing the'digital footprints' in a meaningful manner is essential. Due to the unstructured nature of data, understandingbehavioural patterns is complex. This module will provide a background understanding of analytics in relation tomarketing strategy and communication.

BUS2034: Services and Experiential Marketing (20 credits)Services and Experiential Marketing examines the implementation of marketing concepts, theories and practices toorganisations operating in today's increasingly competitive environment. As the number of products and servicesincreases, the marketplace as a whole becomes increasingly competitive and crowded. This, coupled with the shiftfrom manufacturing based economies to largely service-based economies, has resulted in a raft of new challenges fortoday’s marketers. You will develop an understanding of the nature and role intangible elements play in creating valuefor consumers, critically analyse the major differences between the marketing of services and physical goods, andapply and evaluate a range of relevant services marketing and experiential marketing theories and tools toorganisational situations.

BUS2035: Consumer Behaviour (20 credits)Consumer Behaviour considers the factors that influence what, where and when consumers buy and what they buy.Understanding the factors that affect buying behaviour enables marketers to predict the response of customers tomarketing strategies. This knowledge can then be fed into the design and innovation process for new products andmarketing campaigns. In addition, you will examine the issues of increasing consumerism and addictive shoppingbehaviours.

BUS2036: International Economics (20 credits)International Economics will help you to develop a deeper understanding of international economic concepts,including theories pertaining to trade and international investment as well as currency. The theory will be analysed inrespect of trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) flows and movements in currency markets. Major players in theinternational economy will be examined in terms of their development and economic models. The role of institutionssuch as the EU, World Trade Organisation and International Monetary Fund will also be considered.

BUS2037: Law for Business (20 credits)Law for Business develops your understanding of some of the key principles of law, in terms of how they relate tobusiness and commerce, and apply these to problem situations within a typical business environment. Anunderstanding of some basic legal principles is important to managers, in particular the rules relating to contract,consumer protection, corporate liability and employment.

BUS2038: Loyalty Generation and CRM (20 credits)Loyalty Generation and CRM centres on how Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is about buildingrelationships with customers in order to develop and build loyalty and so keep customers for longer. This drives higherprofits and keeps competitors out. The module introduces CRM, its impact on business strategy, users' activity, andfirm process and functionality. You will also examine CRM commercial packages.

Year 3BUS3024: Strategic Management (20 credits)Strategic Management explores the process of strategy formulation and implementation and considers how thedecision making process influences the choices made by those involved in deciding the strategic direction oforganisations. You will gain a critical understanding of how psychological, political, economic, social, cultural andtechnological factors influence decision making and the subsequent formulation and implementation of strategy in arange of different types of organisations.

LTM3004: Heritage (20 credits)Heritage introduces not only a growing area of tourism and leisure, but one of academic study. The module exploresthe heritage debate and analyses the reasons why preserving the past is considered important in post-industrialsociety. The focus is a contemporary consideration of the meanings attached to heritage by a variety of organisationsand individuals. The module seeks to challenge current attitudes to conservation and develop a high level of criticalthinking. Case studies include both urban and rural environments.

LTM3006: Managing the Impacts of Leisure and Tourism (20 credits)Managing the Impacts of Leisure and Tourism addresses the undoubted, profound and sometimes catastrophic effectthat leisure and tourism can have on the socio-cultural, physical and natural environments as well as on fragileecosystems. With an increasing emphasis being placed on market positioning based around price rather than quality,as well as spontaneous, unplanned and poorly managed leisure and tourism developments, there has been abreakdown of environmental capacities and the spoiling of the quality of facilities, leisure spaces and destinations. Theresult is that economic, social and environmental indicators consistently show that development is no longersustainable in its present form. This module deals with these issues and assesses the ways in which they are managed.

BUS3022: Dissertation (40 credits)Dissertation enables you to produce a key piece of evidence that shows your development over the degree and howyou are now equipped to apply graduate level skills. The module requires the design and implementation of a researchproject in an area of interest agreed with your supervisor via a research proposal and meeting. Support during thedissertation is given by a specified tutor although you will have overall responsibility for managing the process.

BUS3023: Extended Business Project (40 credits)Extended Business Project provides an opportunity for you to undertake an in-depth research project for asponsoring organisation on a topic of common interest. The nature of the project will be negotiated between you, yoursupervisor and the sponsoring company.

BUS3027: Strategic Financial Management (20 credits)Strategic Financial Management introduces some of the techniques used in financial decision making. Anunderstanding of the financial implications of decisions is vital for managers. The module provides an insight into thecomplex issues involved in the financial appraisal of long term projects and allows you to gain a deeper understandingof the theory and practice of strategic financial management.

BUS3029: Seeing the Future: The Next Decade of Commerce (20 credits)Seeing the Future: The Next Decade of Commerce questions where the challenges of the next decade will comefrom and explores the changing face of commerce. Capitalism is an evolutionary process where new industries, new

BUS3030: Business Strategy and Digital Goods (20 credits)Business Strategy and Digital Goods examines the implications of the internet and the rise of ubiquitous mobiledevices that are changing business and society. Specifically, the module will explain how a new economy of creativity,opportunity, connectivity and content has been created. You will consider this 'digital economy', the key conceptsunderpinning commercial activities and investigate how the application of existing theories of competitive advantageand added value can be applied to, or are changed by, digital goods and services that have no physical form.

BUS3031: Global Logistics and International Trade (20 credits)Global Logistics and International Trade examines, in a global context, the set of processes required to strategicallymanage materials and product flows from suppliers through to the final customer in order to achieve competitiveadvantage. The module looks at the theoretical background of logistics and considers the practical perspectives oflogistics from an international trade perspective. You will consider how effective logistics and procurement systemscan become key business enablers and contemplate how international supply chains must form a significant element ofthe strategy of any organisation operating on a global basis.

BUS3033: Development Economics (20 credits)Development Economics discusses the key economic, social and political factors responsible for economicdevelopment and growth. In particular, the module provides an insight into economic theories analysing thedevelopment patterns across different countries and explaining differences. You will consider what factors effectivelyenhance or hinder economic growth and explore the relationship of economic development with national andinternational institutions, macro-economic policy and foreign direct investment. The role of civil society and theenvironment on economic development will also be examined, as will socio-economic issues such as poverty andinequality.

BUS3034: Contemporary Issues in Economics (20 credits)Contemporary Issues in Economics provides you with an understanding of, and an ability to critically analyse,contemporary issues in economics. Economic theories and understanding established earlier in the programme will beutilised to analyse contemporary economic situations and policies. The module will cover current, significant economicevents both nationally and internationally, in respect of both the economic situation and policy. All issues will beconsidered from the perspective of business and management.

BUS3036: Strategic Human Resource Management (20 credits)Strategic Human Resource Management critically investigates how far human relationships are central to StrategicHuman Resource Management (SHRM). The module takes a cross disciplinary approach making content as relevant tohealth and education as it is to sport, events management or any other organisational setting which requires peoplemanagement. BUS3037: Organisational Misbehaviour (20 credits)Organisational Misbehaviour takes a critical position in reflecting on why it seems almost inevitable for institutionsand their employees to misbehave. Topics covered will include institutional racism, politicians’ expenses, and the Liborinterest rate scandal. We will critically review such instances of personal and institutional misbehaviour to understandwhy it appears so difficult for organisation’s and their employees to act in a way which is both ethical and aligns withthe moral norms we expect from our principal institutions.

BUS3039: Global Marketing Management (20 credits)Global Marketing Management encourages you to develop an informed appreciation of international marketing in thecontext of emerging world markets and increasing globalisation. The module provides you with the means to integrateaspects of operational marketing within a strategic and international perspective. In particular, you will study how andwhy companies choose to operate internationally, the entry strategies available to them, globalisation and theinternational marketing environment.

BUS3040: Marketing and Society (20 credits)Marketing and Society will help you to define and understand how marketing in society is utilised as a tool for publicservices such as charities, government and the health service. This will involve the study of the business and socialenvironments in terms of their target audiences, resources, planning, education and current changes. The module willfamiliarise you with key models of behaviour change and the role of stakeholders, values, beliefs, emotions andlifestyles in influencing such change, with emphasis on environmentally sustainable behaviour. You will also beintroduced to a practical and reflective campaign process that supports the use of social marketing to achievebehaviour change.

BUS3041: Advertising in Marketing Communications (20 credits)Advertising in Marketing Communications enables you to study the role of advertising in online and offline integratedmarketing communications strategies. You will drill into the elements that comprise individual adverts and considerhow the range of online and offline media vehicles available to deliver them have blurred the boundaries betweenadvertising and other elements of the promotional mix. It is important that you understand the strategic role ofadvertising and the rationale that underpins the design and development of individual adverts. In addition, you need tounderstand the place of advertising within the marketing communications techniques available to marketers, whilstunderstanding the effects advertising has on the consumer and the debates that emanate from those effects.

BUS3042: Marketing Simulation (20 credits)Marketing Simulation is designed to provide an understanding of marketing management and planning and to engageyou in the marketing decision-making process via the use of a marketing simulation package. Working in a group, youwill analyse the marketing environment, undertake competitor analysis, manage the marketing mix, and decide thepositioning of your product portfolio.

BUS3044: Entrepreneurship and Innovation (20 credits)Entrepreneurship and Innovation considers how to turn a good idea into a successful market-leadingproduct. Entrepreneurship and innovation go hand in hand and involve the development and release of a new product/service or the repacking of an existing one to provide competitive advantage or even create new markets. This moduleexplores a variety of concepts around strategic entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship. We will examine thedifference between an idea, an invention and an innovation and provide you with a case-led understanding of theprocess in action, from creation to implementation. Moreover, it provides you with a number of tools and techniques tocritically evaluate success and build on your previous experiences of work-based learning or enterprise education.

BUS3048: Sustainability and Business (20 credits)Sustainability and Business recognises that sustainability is increasingly shaping business practice and culture in the21st century while acknowledging that business has a vitally important role to play in all our sustainable futures. Themodule will equip you with a comprehensive and holistic understanding of sustainability and the various business andsocietal contexts in which these can be applied. Exploring the broad and holistic concept of sustainability, as framed bythe United Nations' 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), you will discover a range of ideas, concepts and theoriesof sustainability and gain insight how they are shaping the future business agenda. You will examine theinter-connectedness of different sustainability challenges facing humanity, such as climate change, energy and health,and consider the vital role that business has to play in addressing them. You will critically analyse specific approaches

LTM3005: Events Management (20 credits)Events Management focuses on the events industry, an important and economically dynamic part of the leisure andtourism industry. Each year, an increasing number and variety of events occur throughout the United Kingdom.Business, sporting, cultural and mega-events dominate the media, utilise and dominate transport systems, and fillhotels. They provide an important source of wealth, giving an important boost to economies, generating revenue andemployment. Though the benefits are often well publicised, event management is often problematic as organisersattempt to balance perceived benefits against a range of impacts. This module deals with these issues and allowsyou to reflect upon the practice of event management and consider the key problems associated with hosting events.

If you studied Language modules in Years 1 and 2, you may wish to study a further Language module in Year 3. Thiswould form an integral part of your degree in place of one of the optional modules above.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modulesmay vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that theavailability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected bytimetabling requirements.

TimetablesTimetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Entry RequirementsTypical offer 104-112 UCAS Tariff points. No specificsubjects are required.

• A Level: BCC-BBC;

• BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTECQCF qualifications): Distinction, Merit, Merit(DMM);

What are my career prospects?As a BSc (Hons) Business & Management with Leisure &Tourism graduate, you will be qualified to work in areassuch as leisure and tourism, accountancy, administration,banking, education, finance, human resourcemanagement, marketing, public sector management,retailing, small and medium sized enterprisemanagement, general management, and specialistfunctions. Alternatively, you may wish to undertakefurther study and progress to a Masters degree.

You will gain affiliate membership of the CharteredManagement Institute (CMI), a globally recognisedprofessional body, for the duration of your degree andassociate membership (known as ACMI) for oneadditional year after graduation. You will then have theoption to renew your associate membership on an annualbasis, however this would be at your own expense. TheCMI is dedicated to promoting the highest standards inmanagement and leadership excellence. Membershipentitles you to full access to ManagementDirect, anextensive online portal that provides invaluable careersinformation, course-based resources and advice on bestpractice.

On completion of your degree, you will also be awarded aCMI Level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership.

Tuition FeesIf you are a prospective UK student who will be joiningthis undergraduate degree in academic year 2021/22, thetuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.

Tuition fees for international students enrolling on theprogramme in academic year 2021/22 are £12,500 perannum.
