Captain’s Note

With the holy month of Ramadhan behind us, the KGNS calendar for social and golfing events is back on track, starting with the Raya Open House

and the inter-club game (home) with Royal Pahang Golf Club! It was very heartening to see KGNS members and corporate bodies hosting Buka Puasa at our premises for their families, friends and business associates. For me, personally, these gatherings are ideal opportunities for us to catch up and touch base with people dear to us, and to meet and form new acquaintances.

- Dato’ M. Harris KudusCaptain

These

gatherings

are ideal

opportunities

for us to

catch up and

touch base

with people

dear to us,

and to meet

and form new

acquaintances.

In any case, you might have noted that, during

the Ramadhan break, the Course and Ground crew

took the opportunity to do hollow-tining of all

greens on the Putra and Kelana courses. Also,

renovation of the Course and Ground maintenance

building was undertaken, mainly in September,

and at time of writing, work is in the completion

stage. There is, however, more to be done in KGNS

and, as we go along, we will identify areas, both

off and on the course, that are in need of

improvement.

At this time, I would congratulate and welcome

those who joined us in the intake of new members

at October’s Introduction Night; aside from added

revenue and patronage of our F&B outlets, this

also means that traffic at the Putra and Kelana is

going to be a little heavier. Accordingly, it is hoped

that golfers, particularly the new members, would

take special pains to love and protect our courses,

to observe the rules and etiquette of the game,

even as you enjoy your round of social and/or

competitive golf.

I take this opportunity to wish all Muslim

Members Selamat Hari Raya Aidi l f i t r i &

Maaf Zahir Batin and to all Indian Members, a very

Happy Deepavali.

Please be advised that all golfers should have valid golf

insurance for your own and third party protection.GolfInsurance

Note: Golf Insurance is compulsory for all visitors, members’ guests and reciprocal members.

Rules of Golf

Love Thy Course

Under Rule 16-1a, you are allowed to

brush aside loose impediments on your line

of putt with your hand or even a putter. The

casual movement of the putter along the line

of the putt would not be a breach of the Rules

unless in the process you did something to

the putting green, such as press anything

down, which might influence the movement

of your ball when played (Rule 1-2).

This beautiful par-3 is all carry-over-water that sits between its tee and its near-island green. The tee shot, from a slightly elevated back tee, increases in difficulty when a cross wind is present or when the wind is blowing directly into the face of the golfer. A good, bold, confident swing can yield a birdie, but a ‘maybe-I-should-play-it-safe’ mind-set more often than not means a double-bogey for the scorecard.

Club Updates

Welcome to KGNS!

Gavin Rajpal Singh Seine Cycle & Carriage

Patronising the Club at a very early age, courtesy of father Kuldip Singh Seine (Management Committee member), he is not a stranger to KGNS. “I like the facilities provided here even if I don’t get to use all of them! For me, it’s golf, swimming and the gym. My older brother is already a member, now it’s my turn – have to start paying my own bills from here on!”

Michelle Yap Li Peng MedaFI (consultant firm)

Back from Sydney after her tertiary studies and work stint, she is equally familiar with KGNS as “my parents are members too and I would come here for swimming lessons as a kid! It has been quite a wait to get in but I am glad to be here. I intend to take up golf and you can expect to see more of me at the driving range, after work, of course!”

Haziq bin Hamizan Professional golfer

Dad, Hamizan Mohd Derus, introduced him to KGNS and golf as a child and Haziq turned pro in July 2009. “Convinced my father to transfer membership to me and hopefully I’ll start a dynasty here, continue the cycle of life with my own family!” On aspirations for KGNS, he is anxious that “we get to hold the Malaysian Open here” and, needless to say, with him in the field!

In his welcoming address, aside from highlighting discipline and dress code, the President stressed that membership into KGNS comes with responsibilities, in caring for the Club and its facilities, particularly, the golf courses. Urging all to abide by the rules and regulations of the Club, YBhg. Tan Sri reiterated that, at KGNS, a handicap test and rules seminar were prerequisites for those keen on golfing. Citing his own 40-year unending love for KGNS and seeing it grow through the years, he called on all new members to do likewise.

At Introduction Night (4), held on the evening of 8th October, 14 new members were inducted into the KGNS family in a simple ceremony

with their proposers and seconders in tow. Also in attendance were KGNS President, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas and

members of the Management Committee and the KGNS Management team..

In the course of the evening, Berita Subang spoke to some of the new members and their casual comments were as follows:

1. Dr. Anil K Radhakrishnan 2. Darryl Kevin Valentine 3. Gavin Rajpal Singh Seine 4. Haziq Bin Hamizan 5. Terence Kam Chee Ling 6. Ngiam Choong Jin 7. Pauzi Bin Mohamad 8. Sarita a/p Moorthy 9. Toi See Yen 10. Toi See Yau

Having served for several years in a similar capacity with real estate companies and property developers (Meda Inc.), Brian’s move into the leisure industry is, as he puts it, “totally different and because knowledge has no limit, I want to learn as much as I can about the leisure industry.” In a recent interview with Berita Subang, Brian remarked that while the “pace at KGNS is comfortable, less hectic than the corporate world, networking is equally important.”

Not entirely sure when or how he will take up golf, Brian is, presently, somewhat preoccupied with

New Face in KGNS

Just now settling down to the task of getting a firm handle on the financial affairs of KGNS, Brian Tan Ken Boo, 38, joined the Club management team

In the meantime, he is looking at the financial procedures and systems currently in place at KGNS with a view to improve, if required, on the status quo and clear hurdles and/or weaknesses, if any. When pressed for an opinion on his findings, he replied that “it’s too soon to tell!” and, further, that “cash-flow is not an issue here and optimising returns or taking risks is very much dictated by Club policy.”

Welcome, Brian, to the Club and may all your aspirations come true at KGNS!

Course & Ground

Work continued to progress as planned for the main areas, which included the office, spare parts storage and workshop, and it is to be noted that the contractor himself worked as hard as he could in a bid to finish the job on schedule. Although we experienced a 6% delay, the overall progress percentage was almost 80%, as at 20th September 2009, and we remain hopeful that, on this basis, the project will be completed within the targeted time.

Construction of the Course & Ground Maintenance Building started on 7th July 2009 after all the necessary preparations had been

undertaken by both the Course & Ground and House Departments. The appointed contractor, SQA Builders Sdn Bhd, quickly got down to work that was timetabled for completion by 3rd October 2009. The existing machinery

storage areas however, were completed in two weeks as the scope of work only involved changing the roofing structure, to steel type.

At Berita Subang print time, all the necessary activities have been carried out by the contractor, Course & Ground Department and the individual who is related or appointed to overseeing this project. We are confident that by mid-October, the new building will be up and running, with added rooms for both staff and equipment.

The Course & Ground Department takes this opportunity to thank the individual concerned and the company who have put in a lot of effort to make this new building a reality.

Hollow-tining In the golf industry this means making a hole, 3”or 4”

deep, with the deepest being 8”, into the soil. The major function of of this is to loosen the soil structure, let air go through the soil for better ventilation and aid root movement penetration through the soil. Mother Nature’s way of doing this job is using earthworms, but for golf courses, especially on the greens, the existence of earthworms poses problems for the Course Superintendent because the action will mirror the quantity of thatch. Numourous numbers of earthworms will mean a lot of thatch, a condition that is not healthy for grass survival. During heavy golf traffic, as is the case in KGNS, the greens are easily compacted and when more major competitions are scheduled by the Golf Department, the survival rate of the grass will decrease or, even worse, it will die if no preventive action like hollow-tining is taken.

Verticut This is a combination of the word “vertical” and “cut”,

which means cutting the grass in a vertical way. The major function of this “cultural practice” is to cut what is known as the runner of the grass and, at the same time, remove the thatch that has accumulated underneath the grass level. As mentioned above, this accumulated thatch will make the green unhealthy because the twin activity of hydro-carbon breakdown bacteria and earthworms not only make the green smelly, but too soft and soggy during heavy rain. The runner will make the green look untidy and will affect the trueness of the green.

Course & Ground

& Verticut Hollow-tining

Cultural PracticeThe Course and Ground Department has scheduled this cultural practice to be undertaken twice a year for both courses and recently, during the fasting month, it was done for the Kelana Course (work took place from 24th till 27th August) and on the Putra Course (from 14th till 17th September). The reason for choosing the fasting month was because of the low tracffic during this period. The size of tining is 3/8”, and the depth up to 5”. Heavy verticut has been applied for the collar. After completion of this cultural practice, the affected areas would then be top-dressed with sand, fertilized with selected fertilizers and watered frequently in order to make the recovery period shorter. Playable condition is normally achieved after 2 weeks of cultural practice.

Merdeka Night 2009

Although “Merdeka Night 2009” fell during the month of Ramadhan, it did not stop our patriotic members from coming together to usher in our Independence Day 2009 and make the occasion a success. Held in Bilik Buaya on 31st August, the celebration began at 8.30pm with the Jammers, our Sunday resident band, getting members and their guests into the party mood.

Mandarin ClassGathering

The Social Sub-Committee recently organised 10 Mandarin Classes (from June-August), which proved to be a success as there was a great response from our Club members to participate. The main purpose of conducting these classes was to stir interest in spoken Mandarin and also as a social activity where students and teachers could look forward to seeing each other weekly for a 2-hour fun, interactive “Hua Yii” lesson. It was a member-for-member activity for which students need only to pay for refreshments served during the classes at RM10.00 each per lesson. Students comprising, Chinese, Malays and Indians, with the young-est at age 15 and the oldest at 85, took part.

Mrs. Evanna Low, a Social Sub-Committee member and the person

responsible for starting this activity;

En. Atan Mustaffa Yussof Ahmad, the key person and the one responsible

for the detailed design of the Mandarin Class syllabus and the Blog page;

and last but not least;

Ms. Gillian Goh who tirelessly commited her time weekly to ensure that all

the students were not left out or left behind in any class.

There were spot quizzes with patriotic questions about Malaysia and those with the right answers walked away with prizes sponsored by Forest’Secret and Ricoh. Also a special performance by Mr Alex Wong, a young Elvis impersonator who won

the Super Talent Search 2007, delighted and awed the audience with his fantastic performance and very-much-like Elvis voice.

At the stroke of midnight, cheers of “MERDEKA! MERDEKA! MERDEKA!” reverberated with the Social Sub-Committee leading all in song through “Negaraku”, followed by “Tanggal 31 Ogos” by Sudirman and “Satu Malaysia” (theme of this year’s Merdeka celebration) while hand-held “Jalur Gemilang” were waved in unison. A Merdeka cake, sponsored by Menangfax, was cut right after, adding icing to the festivities .

The Social Sub-Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors; Forest’Secret and Ricoh for sponsoring prizes for the games and, last but not least, the sporting members who turned out and joined in to make this “Merdeka Night” a memorable and meaningful one.

The class instructors were club members themselves who volunteered

their services without charge. We acknowledge with special thanks the

untiring and unselfish contribution of time and energy from our kind

volunteers, viz.:

The next Mandarin Class is scheduled to start after 1 November 2009. At

the same time, we are also looking for more volunteers to assist us to cater

for more participants. Course notes will be provided.

New students are requested to sign up for the class at the Reception

Counter or call Pamela Looi at 03 7876 0388 ext 70/71.

Winners waltzed away with trophies, Body Shop hampers and the chance (for the top 4 in the solo and duet categories) to represent KGNS in the 17th Interclub Karaoke Competition, which was hosted at Royal Selangor Club on 7 August 2009.

The Social Sub-Committee would like to thank our Emcee, Mr Louis Iskandar and the panel of judges for officiating the evening – Zue Hassim, Aderline Khan and Eja Ismail, who contributed their time to support this event.

KGNS Nightingales

The Annual KGNS Closed Karaoke Competition 2009 was held at the Multi Purpose Hall with 12 solos

and 3 duets. With participants’ families and supporters filling the Hall and rooting for their favourite songbird, the contest started promptly at 8.30 p.m. There is no shortage of talent in KGNS and for the 2009 edition of the competition, it was very encouraging to see new faces joining in the challenge. Everyone enjoyed themselves, listening to renditions of popular evergreens and cheering on the contestants who gave off their best that night.

A novel way to celebrate Hari Raya Ai-dilfitri, as KGNS teen golfer Mohd Hisyam Abdul Majid will tell you, is to go sign up for a golf tournament – and win it! Home for the holidays from Brisbane, Australia where he studies, the lad first secured a berth in the third leg of the SportExcel Premier-Elite championships held at Kelab Rahman Putra. Then, despite an absence of nearly nine months, young Hisyam turned in a stellar performance to post 3-under on the par-72 course, 5 shots clear of the nearest contender, and clinched victory in the Under-18 category.

In a media interview, Hisyam re-marked, “I registered 2-under for the first nine holes followed by 1-under in the final nine holes”. A little unsettled by the heavy downpour that disrupted play, he was unflinching, though, in keeping both momentum and spirit going and was “glad that I pulled it through!” Next on the cards is the SportExcel Junior Open Grand Finals scheduled for year end, when he will be set to defend the Boys’ Under-18 title that he currently holds. Syabas, Hisyam, and all the best from all of us here in KGNS and Berita Subang!

KGNS Hari Raya Open House 2009at Poolside Terrace

The KGNS Hari Raya Open House was jointly organised by the Food & Beverage and the Social Sub-Committee in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations for members to get-together for fun and fellowship. It was held on Saturday, 3rd October from 6.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. Members were charged a nominal RM15.00 fee per person in the form of a contribution.

More than 200 members and guest who attended the event enjoyed the wide range of Raya Cuisine of “Masakan Kampung” and “Warung”. Lemang, Ketupat, Rendang, and Serunding were part of the dishes, besides the wide range of Kueh Raya.

Some members came in their Raya outfits and enhanced the festive mood of the event. The patrons were entertained by The Gazalian who belted out some nostalgic numbers as well as some modern songs. To the delight of those present, Afiq from Akademi Fantasia 5 made an appearance and performed two sets of fun Raya numbers. Sporting members also sang some Raya songs with the band.

We thank all the members who helped make the event a successful one and hope to see everyone again next year.
