Jimmy Clark Head Coach Jimmy Clark is in his ninth year as Athletic Director and fourteenth year as head baseball coach. Clark, a native of Conway, Ark., has coached multiple All-Americans, 67 All-Confer-ence players, brought the program its first-evernationalrankingandhasledthe team to the post-season three times. His teams have rewritten the

school record books over the last 13 seasons. Prior to his arrival, the program had won just 11 games the previoustwoseasons.Inhisfirstyear,Clarkmatchedthatwintotalandwonfivemoreconferencegamesthan the previous season. From there, the veteran coach has built the program into a playoff contend-er in each of the subsequent seasons. In 2005, Clark was recognized as the American Southwest Confer-ence East Division Coach of the Year after leading theEaglestotheirfirstwinningrecordinnearlyadecade. Two years later, Clark had his club in the playoffs,thefirsttimeinovertenyearstheprogramqualifiedforpost-seasonplay.Clarkfollowedthatseason with even better results. The 2008 team went 32-11, the best record in school history, and made its second straight playoff appearance. The team showcased some of the most dynamic players in school history, including three All-Americans. Clark’s 2008 team received national recognition, too, earn-ingtheprogram’sfirsttop-25rankingfromD3base-ball.com. Ozarks was ranked as high as #14 in the poll and remained in the top-25 for most of the year. The 2009 team made its third consecutive trip to the playoffs under Clark. Under Clark, two of his pitchers have played pro-fessionally.SuccesshascarriedoffthefieldaswellasClark has coached eight players on the prestigious Academic All-America Team and another 80 have been on the conference All-Academic Team during his tenure. A number of his players have been on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team. He also had the conference’s Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2003. A former standout at the University of Central Arkansas, Clark coached at Class AAA powerhouse Heber Springs High School for nine years where he was named the 2AAA Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1998. In nine years, Clark compiled a record of 155-100 (.600), and the Panthers won three conference titles and a regional title. Clark was a four-year starter at the University of Central Arkan-sasatvariouspositions,includingfirstbase,pitcher,outfieldanddesignatedhitter.Afterfinishinghiscol-legiate career, Clark became an academic advisor at University of Arkansas-Little Rock. Clark earned his

Nathan Bacon Assistant Coach NathanBaconentershisfirstsea-son as the assistant baseball coach. Bacon, a native of Kansas City, Mo., was a standout pitcher at NAIA Avila University from 2010-2012, where he led the Eagles to a pair of confer-encechampionships.Baconfinishedhis career with a 20-6 record on the

mound and earned All-Conference honors twice. He played at NAIA Central Christian College in 2009, earning the team’s Pitcher of the Year award that season. He was a member of the pitching staff at NCAA II Harding University prior to Central Christian College. Bacon was a pitching coach at Summit Christian Academy in Lee’s Summit, Mo., during the 2013 season. He was the pitching coach for the Diamond Kings Under-18 team in 2013 and has given pitching and hitting lessons at Searcy Sports Advantage. Bacon played at Summit Christian Academy, leading the team to a pair of state championships, while earning All-State honors three times. Bacon received his bachelor’s degree in history from Avila University in 2012. He and his wife, Jackie, were married in 2013.

bachelor’s degree in mathematics from UCA and his master’s degree in secondary education from UALR. He has spoken at a number of clinics, including the Arkansas High School Baseball Coaches Association. He and his wife Kelli are the parents of two sons.

SOLID NUCLEUS RETURNS FOR EAGLES Head baseball coach Jimmy Clark believes his offense and defense will be strong enough to com-pete in the rigors of the American Southwest Con-ference,buttheEagleswillneedtofindawaytoreplace 180.0 innings on the mound. Ozarks lost two of its three conference starters on the mound who combined for 122.4 innings of work. Three other pitchers graduated. Clark believes he has the pitchers on the staff, but it is just a matter of whowillfillthoserolesmosteffectively. “I feel good about our defense and offense, but pitching is somewhat of an unknown,” said Clark. “I am excited about the arms we have on the staff. They are just not proven. Even the guys we have coming back haven’t thrown a tremendous amount. They have been contributors, but they haven’t been the main guy. Someone will have to step up.” Among the potential starters on the mound include senior right-handers Alex Rodriguez and Nathan Cedor as well as junior right-hander Grady Finley. “We need these guys to be starters and go deep into games,” said Clark. “But Alex is good out of the pen, too. Nathan seems better suited as a starter and Grady is a guy that doesn’t walk a lot of bat-ters.” While the Eagles had an up-and-down season and didn’t qualify for the playoffs in 2014, the club wasn’t too far from being among the mix of post-season teams. Ozarks dropped a three-game series against LeTourneau University, with two of those losses by one run. LeTourneau won the conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Re-gional.Ozarks,meanwhile,finished14-26overalland10-23 in conference play in 2014. “We were close, but we weren’t very consistent last season,” said Clark. “We were good one week-end and bad the next. It was frustrating. If we can get some contributions from some of the guys who haven’t played much, we can be right in the thick of things.Wehavetofigureoutawaytowinthosetightgames. I think offensively and defensively we will give ourselves a chance. Ultimately, our pitching will determine how far we go.” Clark’s teams typically use bunting to advance runners. However, with more speed on the roster, he plans to steal more bases. “I’m hoping to steal some bases so we don’t have to rely on the bunt so much,” he said. “We have some guys that can run. We will do what we have to do. It just depends on the situation.” Another NCAA rule change is likely to affect the offensive output of all collegiate baseball teams. A

new rule instituted this season will require the use of a low-seam ball, which will allow the ball to travel further. Ozarks hasn’t been a power-hitting team, but the new rule could produce more home runs at Lon-nie R. Qualls Field. “With the new low-seam ball, the ball should go further,” said Clark. “A ball that went 300 feet will now go 320 feet.” The Eagles have six starters returning, including All-Conference short stop and right-handed pitcher Andrew Beck. Beck produced a spectacular fresh-manseasonbyfinishingsecondontheteaminbat-ting (.308), RBI (31), total bases (58), doubles (9) and runs(24).Herankedfifthintheconferenceinsaveswith three. “Andrew has a chance to be special,” said Clark. “He has some pop with the bat and he has a nice arm. The sky is the limit. He is working really hard.” All-Conference players Sam Shook and Taylor Parker bolster the lineup with their bats. Shook will seetimeinleftfieldwhileParkerwillplayatsecond. “Sam has a good work ethic,” said Clark. “We know what we will get out of him. I’m excited for what he will do his senior year. Taylor is a guy that can drive in runs and plays solid defense. We have somegooddepthintheinfieldwithTaylorandtheothers.” Third base is open for a new starter this season, whileseniorJohnSinglerreturnsatfirstbase.Intheoutfield, theEagleswillhavespeedandplayingexperience in junior Dean Igert and sophomore Alex Smith. “John was our most consistent hitter this fall,” said Clark. “He is really getting the barrel on the ball and driving it. We need him to be an RBI guy. In the outfield,Deanhashadagoodoff-season.Alexhasalotoftalentandspeedandcouldplayinrightfield.There will be some other guys like Zach Walker that couldcontributeintheoutfield.” Andres Acosta provides power as the designated hitter and transfer Jake Smith will see action behind the plate. “Andres is back and probably has as big as bat as anyone in the conference,” said Clark. Clark believes it will take a total team effort and an improved mentality to pull out close games this season and improve upon last season’s record. “Winning breeds winning and losing breeds los-ing,” he said. “Some years, you win those one-run gamesbecauseyoufindaway.Othertimes, itgoeswrong and players start to think a little bit too much. A team’s mentality has a lot to do with that. We need to play well to win in this conference. We can’t have an off day and expect to win.”
