BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Bryan Thao Worra holds the distinction of being the first Lao American to receive an NEA Fellowship in Literature in 2009

for poetry. In 2012, he was selected as the Lao delegate to serve as a Cultural Olympian during the London Summer Games.

His poetry is presently on display at the Smithsonian's National American History Museum and as part of the traveling exhibit

“I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story.”

He is a reporter with Asian American Press and the creative works editor of the Journal of Southeast Asian American

Education and Advancement. He has also served as the Assistant Executive Director of the Lao Assistance Center of MN.

He founded the first National Lao American Writers Summit in 2010 bringing together over 100 established and emerging Lao

American writers from across the country, many meeting for the first time in 40 years. In 2012, he established the first Lao

Minnesotan Artists Heritage Month, recognized by the Governor of Minnesota. His writing is cited in over nine national and

international textbooks including the 2012 edition of the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics and Wenying Xu’s Historical

Dictionary of Asian American Literature and Theater.

He received a 2011 award for Youth Media Innovation from the University of Minnesota Human Rights Center for his work

training and developing Lao American youth to use film and video to address social justice issues such as racism. Since 2003

he has served as a regular speaker to the annual Asian Media Access Youth Media Training Camp in Minnesota training Asian

American youth on story development techniques and script development. He was among the first Lao Americans to present

their literary work on youtube and other social media formats and works closely with emerging Lao American film-makers.

Among his 20 other literary, academic and professional awards, he holds an Asian Pacific American Leadership Award in 2009

from the State Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans, and a 2002 Many Voices Fellowship from the Minnesota Playwrights

Center. He organized numerous Lao American interdisciplinary exhibits and performances in Minnesota including Beyond

The Other Side of The Eye (2013) Legacies of War: Refugee Nation Twin Cities (2010), Emerging Voices (2002), The

5 Senses Show (2002), Lao’d and Clear (2003), Giant Lizard Theater (2005), Re:Generations (2005), and The Un-

Named Series (2007).

Bryan Thao Worra is the author of 6 books and his work appears in over 100 international publications around the world

including Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, Germany, France, Singapore, China, Korea, Chile, Pakistan, and across the

United States. His poems have been translated into Spanish, French, German, Korean, Thai, Tagalog, Bengali, and Lao. He is

the first Lao writer to hold professional membership in the international Horror Writer Association and the Science Fiction

Poetry Association. In 2016, he became the first Lao American to serve as the president of the Science Fiction Poetry

Association. Thao Worra was also the first Lao American to serve on the board of the award-winning Loft Literary Center,

and has served on the advisory committees of the Carl Brandon Society and the Kartika Review.

He has served as a consulting contractor to numerous institutions including Asian Media Access, the Minnesota History

Center, the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans, the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Thao

Worra was a featured guest speaker at numerous colleges nationally including California, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota,

Illinois, Colorado and Ohio.
