Little Penguins and Short-tailed Shearwaters (also known as Tasmanian muttonbirds) are special
seabirds of Bruny Island. Both species:
• Rely on nearby marine waters for their food
• Nest in burrows in the dunes, often in colonies
• Have adults, eggs and chicks that are vulnerable to attacks by dogs and feral cats
Little Penguins cannot fly. They live and breed on Bruny Island year round. Adults leave their burrow before sunrise and feed at sea before returning after sunset.
Please:
• Follow all guidelines when you visit the penguin and shearwater colony at the Bruny Island Neck
• Remember your safety is more important than a good photograph
• If you come across a penguin, keep a distance of at least 20m where possible
• Keep dogs and cats well away from nesting sites
• Stay clear of fenced or signed nesting sites
• Do NOT use flashes or white light torches (they blind penguins’ vision)
• Slow down - many penguins are killed by vehicles at the Neck.

Shearwaters live and breed at Bruny Island over summer. Young are left alone in the burrow for up to a week or more while the adults feed at sea. Shearwaters are harvested as a traditional Aboriginal food source (licence required).
