Great Service Starts with Installation and Commissioning1COMMISSIONINGCOMMISSIONING

CommissioningDuring commissioning, we check that every aspect of the thruster system has been installed correctly, including component location, hull integration, alignment, piping and wiring.
At the Harbour Acceptance Test (HAT), we run the thruster and check all basic functions. We test the interfaces with other systems and tune controls. At the Sea Acceptance Test (SAT), we set the full thruster load and fine-tune the system. We may attend other tests such as dynamic positioning and FMEA.
A Brunvoll delivery A Brunvoll delivery is only regarded as complete when we are confident that the thruster system is functioning optimally. This forms the basis for low life-cycle costs and thruster durability. This is not the end of the story…
… it’s the beginning of a long-term relationship of service and support.
Great Service Starts with Installation and CommissioningCOMMISSIONINGCOMMISSIONING

“The sea has shaped our lives for generations”“I grew up with boats and ships and the North Sea. On this wild and jagged coastline, there’s a culture of doing the job right. Every day, you see how much depends on that. So fine-tuning thrusters, and getting them to work at their best, is a very satisfying job.”
“Check it straight away”“A noise that doesn’t sound right. An alarm you cannot explain. It makes sense to check it straight away, before a small problem develops into a bigger and much more expensive one. Multidisciplinary Brunvoll expertise is just a phone call away. Go straight to the source.”
“Hands-on”“Having all the details of Brunvoll thruster systems at our fingertips gives us time for the work that adds value for our customers. After more than 20 years of Brunvoll experience, I have seen how it pays to invest in taking care of information and experience.”

Communication with shipowner and crewAlert and observant crews are important for optimal maintenance: planning, decision-making and setting priorities. Time and costs can be saved when crew members report vital information such as:• Running hours• Oil analysis• System checks – any alarms?• Any leaks or water content in thruster?• Noise and/or vibration?• Observations and gut feelings?
Basis for maintenance planningOur thruster service management database, TSM, provides the full history for every Brunvoll thruster: • Crew experience and observations• Brunvoll’s hand-on expertise and
experience
Brunvoll’s TSM databaseThe thruster service management (TSM) base contains detailed records:• Thruster system history since delivery
and any modifications• Complete Brunvoll service history • Record of all spare parts from Brunvoll• Operational statistics matching
customer needs • Observations to check at next dockingService technicians have information at their fingertips

A typical Brunvoll service jobReplacement of the propeller blade seal is an example of a small service task. Larger jobs include replacing wear parts while the gearbox is in the tunnel. This work requires dismantling of the propeller blades and removing the propeller hub to access the thruster internals.
More extensive service work – might involve the removal of the gearbox from the tunnel and setting it up in the workshop for closer inspection. When time is short, we can replace the gearbox. But there is generally no need to have a back-up thruster. Brunvoll thruster systems are service-friendly and made to last for the lifetime of the ship.
Taking care of what we learn from each service jobEach service job is documented in the Thruster Service Management database. Experience from service work and ideas for improvements are brought back to Brunvoll – so that we can offer even better products and service in the future.
… a little earlier than it is really needed … … sometimes a little later …… and sometimes too late.
Tomorrow, constant monitoring of thruster system parameters will make it possible to schedule maintenance precisely when components are close to the end of their useful life.

Collecting Richer DataBrunvoll develops and delivers BruCon Condition Based Maintenance systems with additional sensors to collect richer information, enabling powerful analysis of the Brunvoll thruster systems as a whole. CBM improves decision support and consistency in maintenance procedures.
The result is more rational maintenance schedules, reduced risks, and more effective use of assets with less downtime.
Optimizing Main- tenance with Remote Data Communication Expert analysis of collected data is combined with Brunvoll experience and observation of the thruster’s condition.
We assess the number of running hours, oil condition and crew observations. Performance statistics help us to recommend what should be available on site.

MAINTENANCE
Cruise is a demanding sector with extremely tight docking schedules. There is no room for errors or waste of time. As the service teams work, thousands of passengers may already be packing their bags for the next cruise. Brunvoll service technicians inspect and service the 6 thrusters installed on “Carnival Fantasy” within the tight schedule for every docking.
How is this possible?• The thrusters are well-engineered and designed for easy maintenance.• Reliability and robustness are built into every component.• The service team knows exactly what to look for and what to do.• Brunvoll’s service technicians arrive fully prepared for the job,
with generous quantities of extra parts that might be needed.• Team members have effective communication skills and work culture.• All Brunvoll service experience is documented in the TSM database.

MAINTENANCEBrunvoll – trusted in demanding offshore service vessels for more than 40 years
DSV “Acergy Harrier” (now “Altus Optimus”) has been running for some 150,000 hours with standard maintenance. For class inspection, removal of the inner LowNoise tunnel in 2010 showed that the thruster systems were still in excellent condition with hardly any fouling or corrosion after 25 years’ operation. All the thruster systems are still going strong.

With Dynamic Positioning (DP) operating 24/7 in some of the world’s most challenging environments, offshore service vessels demand the ultimate in robust and reliable thruster technology.
A thruster failure could put the safety of the crew and the vessel at risk. A day of downtime may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
MAINTENANCEBrunvoll – trusted in demanding offshore service vessels for more than 40 years
“Seven Pelican” – thrusters in the sea since 1985 In an extraordinary test of endurance, the 4 Brunvoll tunnel thrusters on board the Diving Support Vessel (DSV) “Seven Pelican” have accumulated more than 25 years of operation.
In 2010, a full inspection of all the thruster systems showed they are still going strong and still satisfy the stringent noise reduction requirements.Bow: 3 x Brunvoll LowNoise SPA VP 1100 kWStern: 1 x Brunvoll LowNoise SPR VP 920 kW
DSV “Alliance” has clocked up more than 113,000 operating hours for the thrusters – which have been in the sea for 30 years.Built as “Wilchief”, this pioneering DSV is still in service. For divers’ safety, the vessel position must be maintained over the dive site in the face of winds, waves and currents. This places exceptional demands on thruster reliability.

EMERGENCYEMERGENCYTroubleshooting and emergency repair – when the unexpected happens
Suddenly … a rope or a log gets sucked into the thruster “Excelsior” repair with the vessel afloat
A carbon fibre rope caused damage when it was sucked into a thruster on the LNG tanker “Excelsior”.
In a demanding operation with the vessel afloat Off Port Limit Singapore, Brunvoll’s service technician worked together with the vessel’s Chief Engineer and crew to replace the thruster gearbox and propeller blades.
The vessel was trimmed to raise the thruster tunnel above the waterline.
The technicians and parts were lowered to the thruster tunnel using the ship’s crane.
After the challenging repair job, the thruster tunnel was submerged again. The thruster started smoothly – and “Excelsior” was back in operation without dry docking.

PERSPECTIVELooking at the big picture “In this majestic landscape, it’s easier to keep your focus on the important things.
From the mountain peaks, you gain a broad perspective of land and sea.
Life in these surroundings gives you a respect for long seafaring traditions – and an urge to tackle new challenges.
KRISTIAN SOLEMSJØSenior Service TechnicianStarted at Brunvoll in 2003
Here, wind and waves, tides, rocks, and currents …
… have presented challenges to seafarers for generations.
Doing the job right has been a matter of survival.

PERSPECTIVEBrunvoll’s service technicians are a special breed
“The jagged Norwegian coast may be the most complicated shoreline on earth. Brunvoll’s home in Molde is close to a junction of coastal routes that has been a shipping hub since Viking times.”
EFFICIENCYBrunvoll makes thrusters that last – with minimal maintenance. We make our living from selling quality thruster systems, not from large volumes of spare parts or frequent service calls.

EFFICIENCYBrunvoll’s multi-skilled service technicians have climbed our in-house career ladder through specialized training and experience – from apprenticeship in thruster production to fully qualified service technicians.

After-Sales Service Efficiency the Brunvoll Way
Brunvoll often does the job with just one
Brunvoll technicians are trained in all aspects of Brunvoll thruster service • Planning and preparations • Logistics • Mechanics • Hydraulics • Electronics • Software • Business sense • Communication
We only service Brunvoll systems and we know them inside outThat’s why one multi-skilled Brunvoll technician can do the job alone – with the opportunity to call in more resources if necessary.
Our service technicians do their utmost to ensure constant reliability of your Brunvoll system. Top-quality workmanship is a cornerstone of the Brunvoll culture.
AttitudeWe choose our people carefully. We recruit potential – people who are keen to build multidisciplinary expertise, who can take action and think constructively under pressure. Most important? Attitude. Teamwork. The willingness to make a special effort when it’s needed.
Trusted on boardBrunvoll’s service technicians focus on the whole system – not only the electrical functions or only the mechanical functions.
Their goal is to make sure that all the thruster components work together to give you velvet-smooth performance in the long term.
TOOLBOX
The right toolsThe Brunvoll Toolbox is composed individually for every single service job.
Logistics and planningOur service technicians make detailed plans and contingency plans for transport of the Brunvoll Toolbox well in advance.
44
The Brunvoll Technician and his ToolboxWe send the customized toolbox to the site in good time before the service technician arrives for the job. The toolbox includes everything needed to get the job done efficiently.
We take pride in over-preparing with generous margins – we know that every minute counts once the vessel is dry docked.
The service technician dismantles the thruster. Together, the customer, the class surveyor and Brunvoll make the final decision on action and spares to be replaced.
