His father Lee Hoi Chuen, a Hong Kong opera singer, moved with his wife and three children to the United States in 1939. Bruce Lee was his fourth son and received the name "Bruce" from a nurse at the hospital, and his family never used this name. He and his family moved back to Hong Kong while it was occupied by the Japanese. Bruce had a natural affinity for the camera; he appeared in films as a child actor. He also studied martial arts under Ip Man a friend of his fathers. As a teenager, he was taunted by British students for his Chinese background and later joined a street gang. In 1953, he began to hone his passions into a discipline. He soon began ditching school and fighting with the naval officers and fellow students. Bruce Lee continued both his performing career and aggressive behavior throughout high school. It was during this time that Bruce started combining his martial arts and showy personality as he became known by his peers for demonstrating excessively elaborate techniques during fights with untrained opponents. Eventually he stopped getting into fights for the glory but still fought to help his peers who were bullied. One day he got into a fight with the son of a prominent naval officer and was forced to leave Hong Kong by his own father. After reaching California Bruce, stopped fighting with peers often and actually began teaching some of his fellow classmates martial arts. Soon Bruce began focusing his martial arts skills and aggressive attitude at acting and began taking on many different roles in martial arts movies. The social-cognitive approach can help explain Bruce Lee’s personality because he had gone through many differnt changes in his life but throughout them he displayed very unique sets of behavioral patterns. He acted specifically for each kind of situation he was brought into. These behavioral signatures changed as he grew older. First Bruce Lee was a very reserved child and he didn’t have the same outgoing personality that he used during his acting.
