“India Comes To Indy”by Haresh Gangwani

“India Comes to Indy” was the caption in the Metrosection of Indianapolis Star dated Sunday Aug20th 2006. Weall know that India has been in Indy for longer than that that.In fact, the India Association itself has been in Indy since 1967but it was Aug 19th 2006 when we; India Association ofIndianapolis made a statement to the people of Indianapolisand greater Indianapolis (both Indians and non Indians) thatwe have a huge presence and that we want to celebrate IndiaIndependence Day with all (Pictures of the India Daycelebration can be seen in this edition of Bharati – courtesyMahesh Subramaniam and many others who took picturesthat day). As the President of IAI it was a moment of pridefor me to have been given the opportunity to conduct first evercelebration parade in downtown Indianapolis. Roads wereblocked for the parade which started from the Monumentcircle downtown and ended at the Military Park.

People started gathering at the Monument circle at around10:00am in their colorful and authentic outfits along withbanners representing their respective associations. I amthankful to all who went all out in decorating their cars, convertibles, floats for this occasion. At around 11:15am welined up on the West side of the Monument circle for theparade, and wow what a lineup that was! Starting in the veryfirst row were kids and adults carrying the India Associationof Indianapolis banner followed by a glitteringly decoratedfloat (thanks to Abdul Muhammad and Rajendra alvandharfor their hardwork). The float was a trailer borrowed fromAtul Bhargava (thanks Atul) in which we accommodated allthe children we could. There was one who had a surprisingresemblance to GandhiJi (thanks to Mumta Barmeda fordressing up her son, Saagar). Behind the float wereconvertibles, jeeps, cars, and groups representing the followingassociations (in alphabetical order).

• Hindu Temple of Central Indiana• BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha• Greater Indianapolis Telugu Association• Indiana Malayalee Association• Maharashtra Sneh Mandal• Mallige (Kannada Koota of Indiana)• Sikh Educational & Cultural Society of Indianapolis• Tamil Association of Central Indiana

The experience was just incredible; roads were blocked,Indian music was playing in full volume, people were dancingin the streets, everyone was waving the Indian flags withpride which had been distributed to each and everyone. The

feeling of independence is what we all experienced that day. Thanks to the city of Indianapolis and the fine officers of theIndianapolis police department (lead by Lt. Rinehart), whoprovided us a flawless parade protocol. After we reached theMilitary Park, the celebration continued with US and IndianNational Anthem followed by 14 cultural items. Every yearwe have celebrated the India Independence Day and thisyear was no different where cultural items were concerned, every one gave their 110%. We had children of all ages sing, and dance choreographed by Nidhi Bhargava, Dhiren Buch,Maushami Doshi, Sudha Goradia, Vanita Pandey, ArchanaThaker, Farah Vasanwala, and Sunita Yogananda. Whatwas different this year, however, was that during theprogram we had several City and State officials who joinedus and graced us with their presence. We had United StatesCongresswoman Julia Carson who represents the Indiana’s7th congressional district, Eric Dickerson who is the candidatefor the Indiana’s 7th congressional district, State SenatorMichael Delph and our chief guest of the event was HonorableSecretary of State Todd Rokita. Mr. Rokita gave away thetrophies to all the participants and stayed till the end. Each ofthe dignitaries gave a short speech recognizing the importanceof the India Independence Day and extending their supportand friendship to the Indian community. Each one of themwere presented with a bouquet of flowers and an Indian flag. The celebration ended around 4:00pm and everyone left witha feeling of pride and joy.

This event would not have been possible if it wasn’t for myexecutive committee members. Several people outside of myexecutive committee were with me throughout the process. The one who provided me the utmost support was ArchanaThaker. Special thanks to food vendors Garam Massala,Massala Kitchen and India Sizzling for setting up their foodbooth and providing great food to us all. I would also like torecognize Taj of India and Bombay Bazaar who weresponsors for the event. Many thanks to Aradhana DanceInstitute and Mast Entertainment who sponsored the participanttrophies. Although there are many more people to thank, Iwould very much like to thank several volunteers from theTelugu Association who stayed back and helped fold thechairs and tables at the end of the show. Lastly, I want tothank my friend and the current Vice President of IAI RajuChinthala who was responsible for the attendance of thedignitaries and who made sure they were looked after at thepark. I am confident that IAI will continue this tradition andwe will see more and more people participate in the India’sIndependence Day Parade in years to come.

Thoughts and ReflectionsWith September here and 2006 almost over, my term as thePresident of India Association of Indianapolis is also nearingits end. On November 4th; Diwali day celebration, IAI’s newexecutive committee will take the baton from the existingcommittee and will be sworn in. I am blessed and proud tohave served two terms as the President of this fine association. When I took over the responsibilities from Rajesh Kher inNovember 2004 I was very nervous and having been associatedwith IAI for just that one year, I didn’t know if the responsibilityof being the President could be carried out with due justice, but with the support of many, including you, my executivecommittee we managed to have a great 2005. In 2005 weintroduced many new programs. Formation of the communityservices group that year gave people of Indian origin much inthe form of variety, and it also validated reasons to beassociated with India Association. That year, IAI membershipcount also went up a notch and we ended 2005 with a greatDiwali celebration.

I was nominated for the second term and although hesitatingly,I am glad I continued on as I had the support from most of my2005 executive committee who decided to continue plus I hadsome unfinished business (more on that a little later). Needlessto say, I was nervous once again and I remember Archana, who was herself a two term President, kept giving meassurances that second year is easier than the first (I still don’tbelieve that, but it sounded comforting at the time). Anyway,I continued on and today we are one event away from givingthis prestigious honor to someone new who will take theassociation to a greater level yet. As many of you will agreethis year we introduced some new programs like vendorexhibition and family day, we also introduced some benefitsof becoming a member. As a result, patron and grand patronmembership along with the regular membership grew and forthe first time had merchants/vendors joined the communityoffering discounts to IAI members as part of the merchantdiscount program. I thank you all for that. This year wecelebrated a first of a kind India Day celebration with aparade in downtown Indianapolis, a historic moment. Thisyear IAI also jointly co-sponsored many programs with otherassociations and sub-groups, most notably Karunya concertwhich was co-sponsored with GITA (Greater IndianapolisTelugu Association). Another concert which is coming up onSeptember 22nd “SBP Live in Indianapolis”, a musicalextravaganza by Padmashri Dr. S.P. Balasubrahmanyam. This is being co-sponsored by Tamil Sangam of CentralIndiana, GITA and IAI. All in all, so far this year has been abusy year already but full of fun.

Although this year was a better year as far as participation inconcerned, it still lacked involvement from many. Sad part is,I personally saw more new faces at the movies than I saw atthe India Association events. Is it too much to ask formembers to come and show their support at IAI eventsorganized by volunteers promoting Indian culture andcommunity? I know many people who are members of IAIbut most of them are not present at events which by the wayare FREE for IAI members. Let me assure you that this hasimproved from last year (which is what I was referring toearlier as unfinished business). Although this year we madea difference compared to 2005, we still have a long ways togo. The trend is definitely headed in the right direction andif all of us take pride in being associated with India Associationinstead of merely thinking of ourselves as just members wewill automatically see a rise in the participation levels. Beingpart of the association is an agreement of being with anorganization to accomplish a purpose. The purpose is topromote cultural activities of India, foster cultural exchangebetween the people of India and the US and to carry outeducational and charitable activities and this purpose cannotbe accomplished by being an absentee. Therefore, regardlessof whether our children participate at the event or not, regardless of whether it’s cold outside or hot inside, regardlessof whether we like it or not, we must participate in all theevents and encourage the participants and other volunteerswho work extremely hard for many days prior to the day ofthe event.

Lastly, I want to thank each and every one who supported meand those who tolerated me during these 2 years, this includesmy executive committee members, board members, othercommunity leaders, members and non-members. At the endof the day, it was a job that someone had to do it, I am proudto say I did it. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Diwalicelebration on Nov. 4th.

Name Change — General Body NotificationSubject: Amendment of By-Law to change the nameof “India Association of Indianapolis”.

The IAI Board has two proposals on the table to changethe name of “India Association of Indianapolis”. TheBoard had endorsed changing the name to “IndiaAssociation of Indiana” and had presented the proposalto IAI membership for a vote in a letter mailed previously.Meanwhile, a counter proposal was submitted to theBoard to change IAI name to “Indian AmericanAssociation, Inc.”. The Board is publishing both theproposals in this issue of Bharati. Both the proposalswill be mailed to membership of the IAI for voting. TheIAI Board hereby notifies and requests its members toattend a General Body Meeting on Wednesday, October18, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the India Community Center todiscuss and vote on the proposed amendment of theBy-Law. Meeting previously scheduled for September13, 2006 stands cancelled.

Proposal 1: India Association of Indiana:

India Association of Indianapolis (IAI) was incorporated asa legal entity in the State of Indiana in the year 1976. Itsmission is to promote cultural activities of India, to fostercultural exchange between the people of India and the USAand to carry out educational and charitable activities. Prior tothe legalization of the entity, the Organization existed as aninformal association of members, the first ExecutiveCommittee came into existence in 1968. In the early seventiesa small group of Indian Americans had the foresight anddesire to band together to promote Indian cultural and socialactivities. The activities were centered in the city ofIndianapolis, Marion County, where almost 100 percent of thepopulation resided. Since that time, the number of IndianAmericans has grown by leaps and bounds, today numberingclose to 2,000 families. At the same time, the city of Indianapolishas spread out and neighboring suburbia has become anextended part of Metro Indianapolis. A significant portion ofthe membership of IAI now resides outside of the boundariesof Indianapolis and Marion County. An eight county areaincluding and surrounding Indianapolis includes the cities ofCarmel, Greenwood, Fishers, Brownsburg, Zionsville, toname a few.

During this time of demographic growth, IAI itself hasevolved into a dynamic organization with several committees, organizing various events, and getting increasingly involved incommunity activities. The annual Diwali event is a very

popular and well-attended event by many Indian Americansfrom surrounding communities. More recently events such asthe visa camp have become increasingly popular and beneficialto the members. IAI now boasts of members from outside ofthe metro Indianapolis area, drawing from cities such asKokomo, Lafayette, Bloomington, Richmond, Terre Haute,Crawfordsville, Marion, Anderson, Muncie, Ft. Wayne, SouthBend to name a few. The extension of the membership baseinto these neighboring communities is an indication of theoutreach ability of IAI.

In late 2005, the IAI Board began to discuss and debate theconcept of changing the name of India Association ofIndianapolis to more truly reflect the membership base oftoday’s Organization and to envision a place for theOrganization in the future. Today, IAI is an organization forall of Central Indiana, drawing its membership from all eightcounties surrounding Indianapolis. By changing the name toone more reflective of the demographics today, theOrganization could also benefit from generating additionalmembership from those outside of Metro Indianapolis whowould begin to feel a sense of inclusion.

On February 12, 2006 the IAI Board unanimously approvedthe name change of India Association of Indianapolis to IndiaAssociation of Indiana after thoughtful deliberations.

The Board considered four suggestions for the name changeobtained at the annual meeting of IAI’s Board of Trustees,Executive Committee, and the leaders of regional communitiesheld on January 22, 2006. The suggestions were “IndiaAssociation of Central Indiana,” “Indo-American Associationof Indiana,” “India Association of Greater Indiana,” and“India Association of Indiana.” The name “IndiaAssociation of Indiana” was chosen by the Board ofTrustees after an extended deliberation on the currentdemographics, future direction and scope of IAI, andpossible branding implications. The following Statement of Purpose intends to clarify and/oranswer any questions the IAI memberships may have on theIAI name change.

Statement of Purpose & Need:

(1) A significant percentage of IAI members aredrawn from the geographic locations outsideIndianapolis.

(2) Cultural functions organized by IAI such asDiwali draw people of Indian descent from asignificant number of counties within Indiana

(3) IAI organizes community activities such as VisaCamp that has participation from almost all thecounties in Indiana since it is the only Visa Campin the State. IAI, thus, can leverage its ability toserve the people of Indian descent living inIndiana working symbiotically with regionalassociations.

(4) As Indianapolis is regarded as the business, cultural, and educational epicenter of Indiana, the location of IAI makes it a natural conduit toadvance the aspirations of Indians in Indiana infurthering their interests in business, culture, andeducation domains.

(5) Although a significant majority of the members, participants, and stake holders of IAI are fromCentral Indiana, from a pragmatic standpoint ofbranding, the abbreviated form “India Associationof Indiana” will retain the current abbreviation,i.e., IAI. This will avoid the confusion associatedwith the name change.

(6) Looking longer term in the future, the growth ofthe epicenter of the State may well extendbeyond the current Central Indiana region andthe Organization should position itself for a widerreach beyond today’s membership. This justifiesthe inclusion of the entire state of “Indiana” in thename, as opposed to “Central Indiana.”

(7) At this time, the IAI Board of Trustees does nothave a partnership or any sort of umbrellaorganization structure with other existing Indianassociations in the State of Indiana nor does IAIseek to annex any of the existing associations ofIndian Americans within the State of Indiana. The relationship would continue as is; howeverwith the new branding, there will be a naturaldraw for others to join the IAI, if they choose tobuild synergies.

(8) The mission of the new IAI will remain the sameas it has been, to promote Indian cultural activitiesand carry out educational, charitable andcommunity service activities. This proposal doesnot in any way imply that IAI will have or seekto have any political agenda or involvement.

Proposal 2. Indian American Association, Inc.:

We make the above positive and constructive proposal forthe following reasons: The name “India” in IAI denotes acountry and not an ethnic group in the USA. It has a jarringand chauvinistic note to Americans. It denotes that either thatwe are still in India or we still have loyalties to India. AnyAmerican will say that, as Congressmen Andy Jacobs saidwhen he was presented with a copy of our directory in 1985.We work here, earn our livelihood here and the USA is ournew home. USA has been good to us. Our objective shouldbe to spread goodwill and influence Americans and makefriends, not antagonize them. Our correct name is IndianAmerican - just as Irish American, Polish American, AfricanAmerican and so on denotes other Americans. The name ofthe national umbrella organization of Indian Americans iscalled the “National Federation of Indian AmericanAssociations” (NFIA). The US Senate representing India’sand Indian American’s interests is called “Senate Caucus ofIndia and Indian Americans.” Our premier weekly “IndiaAbroad” always refers to us as Indian Americans, either weare students, green card holders (immigrants) or US citizens. Some want to call ourselves Indo- Americans and (or) AsianIndians, and use above terms so that Indian American maynot be confused with American Indians. In the USA, thepolitically correct name now is Native Americans (previouslycalled American Indian, or Indians) - they are the realAmericans, all others are immigrants. Such confusion is notin the minds of NFIA, the US House and the Senate, or IndiaAbroad. A small group of us are confused and are not willingto accept the name everybody else use to call us. A cursoryreading of American history should reveal that millions ofNative Americans were killed off by the early Americansettlers, the most others are in reservations. Has anyonecome across a Native American Association in Indiana? Sothis should be non-issue.

Our Values and hang-ups(Ram S. Ravindran)

Generally values are good principles and policies that wecherish which keep us strong and help us face challenges inlife. Hang-ups are policies and principles that we equally holdon to strongly but are outdated and hamper our progress. Wehave moved over to America permanently and become itscitizens.. So we need to periodically assess our values andhang-ups that we have brought over with us from the oldcountry and hang on to good values and cast off some hang-ups. Our parents who may live us may reinforce the samevalues and hang-ups. Whatever region of India we may havecome from,, surprisingly, we all share some common valuesand hang-ups.

Lat us look at some of the values that we all cherish.

1. We value education.. The higher the better.2. We respect our elders.3. We are attached to our close and extended families4. Each member of the family makes sacrifices for the

welfare of others..5. We don’t want to bother others and we like them to

do the same to us.6. We respect all forms of religious faiths and the

practice of it in various ways.7. No matter what religion we may belong to we believe

in and practice Karma. That is, we believe good orbad will follow us depending on our actions.. We arein-born law-abiding citizens without supervision bythe police.

What about some of the hang-ups that we have brought withus that we need to shed?

1. We disdain manual labor. We feel that working withhands is not desirable and it is beneath our dignity. Ifwe could afford it, many Indians try to hire someoneto clean the house, cut the lawn, spruce up the yard,fix-up appliances, car, and house. Americans withthe history of settling in this one-time wild countryhave developed a tradition to do many things bythemselves.. Americans and Europeans have respectfor manual work. If we raise our children with thishang-up they will not become hands-on problemsolvers. In America.

2. We want security over risk-taking and advancement. We want jobs in stable big corporations or ingovernment than in higher paying upcoming jobs that

maybe risky. We don’t like to move to seek a betterjob. If we avoid risk we may not be able to reap bigbenefits and learn from new experiences. Most of uswant our children to be doctors, engineers from thetime they enter school because these jobs pay welleven if you are an average person in that field.

3. We are not passionate about jobs. Most of us don’tput our heart and soul in to it. If some social event, relative’s visit or children’s welfare is involved wetry to get out of work.. Being married to the job ispracticed only by a few of us.

4. We are happy to be given work to do and do itreasonably well. We don’t go after assignment andput in the necessary extra effort, time needed for it.

5. Many of us avoid leadership roles that haveaccountability, responsibility and performance thatgoes with it. In India most of the elected officialsdon’t have to contend with performance issues.. Weprefer to be members of a committee than head acommittee.

6. We take the issue of “live and let others live” to thepoint of avoidance of involvement in neighborhood, and community affairs. Most of us are not involvedin neighborhood associations or in other communityvoluntary organizations.. We travel miles to join insome linguistic group gatherings of our choice but wefind some excuse to not attend neighborhoodorganization or after work office parties.. Though welike to live in the suburbs, we don’t want to minglewith our neighbors.

7. We have the biggest hang-up about being in the sunor water and get tanned.. As a result we don’t spendmuch time in the yard, play or be active. We discourageour kids from going to the pool. We don’t enroll themin summer camps, Like other minorities we readnews about drowning accidents but we don’t masterswimming. We just avoid water and hope accidentswon’t befall us.

I am sure some of you may not agree with what I havepointed as our general hang-ups. Let us not let our kidsacquire them subconsciously.

Converting AmericaBy Melkote Ramaswamy, Ph. D.([email protected])

America is getting converted. We are not talking of religiousconversion—the nation’s secular character strictly forbids this.

Yet, conversion is occurring on every front!

The concern for the external environment is well-rooted.Conversion of the internal environment has just begun. Smokingis being banned at airports, on airlines, and in buses, trains andpublic places such as restaurants. Thanks for Not smoking arebeing proudly displayed inside homes.

While the country will never become totally dry, there is a slowand steady conversion toward less and less alcohol. Movementssuch as MADD (Mothers Against Drunken Driving) are gainingground. I wonder why there is no group called DADD—DadsAgainst Drinking. University campuses are coming down hardon fraternity and sorority drinking. AA—Alcoholics Anonymousis here to stay. I doubt if ever there will be an AAA—AmericansAgainst Alcohol. We may need to distinguish this from the Pro-Choice Group or Americans Against Abortion.

Ice cream lovers are becoming frozen yogurt converts. BaskinRobbins is into Light and Lusciuos, the cream of the yogurtcrop. What at one time appeared to be an unlikely alliancebetween fruit and yogurt has turned out to be a lastingpartnership.

There is a subtle but sure conversion to vegetarianism. Howelse can one explain a hard-core meat restaurant like Denny’sfeaturing Veggie Cheese melt?

The analog to digital conversion is hard to miss. One need onlylook at watches, clocks, radios, TV’s, cameras, thermometers, weighing machines and blood pressure monitors – to name justa few.

The conversion to metric has been there for quite some time buthas not been recognized. Sports, guns, cameras, cigarettes andbeverages are already into metric. But acceptance is hard tocome in several other areas, such as highway signs andspeedometers.

People have switched from typewriters to word processors andnow to computers. The word carbon copy has becomeobsolete.

We are enjoying greater and greater freedom—from caffeine, calories, sugar, sodium, coconut and palm oil. In a sense, thissignifies conversion to a healthier lifestyle.

Americans are getting converted from a static to a dynamicstate—people who never used to walk except from and to theircars are taking up walking, running and jogging. Whoever hadheard of a $95 shoe?

If only we can convert non-voters to voters!

KNOW YOUR NUMBERSSarita Bajpai, RD PhD

“Health is wealth” is an age old phrase and we do appreciate it moreas we grow older.

Health care in this day and age is much more involved than simplygoing to the doctor and leaving everything in God’s hands (whichwe have to do anyway). Limited coverage by insurance andmounting medical issues and bills become a huge concern when onehas to deal with chronic illness. The best way is not to get sick if itis possible. There are few preventive steps that we can take so weare not taken by surprise. Granted that none of us are immortals anddoing the best will still pose some health issues as we get older. Iguess if we take charge of our health issues just as we do forproperty taxes, income tax and buying new material things we canexpect better quality of life. Indians by nature tend to keep the healthissues as private which are not to be discussed in social gatherings. There is still some stigma attached to health problems. I wouldencourage that we bring the skeletons out of the closets and buildsupport system so we can benefit from each other. I, for one, wouldlove to be a part/or initiate support group to discuss issues relatedto our diet and discuss “what works and what does not for certaindisease conditions”.

Coming back to knowing your numbers I would like to list fewnumbers we should keep track of to maintain good health. These aregeneral guidelines for adults and you may need to get in touch withyour physician to know if the numbers are applicable to you.

a. BMI (Body mass index) - Know your height (m) and weightand BMI (weight (kg)/height(m²). The normal range is between18.5-24.9. BMI more than 35 is associated with increased riskfor cardiovascular problems. Unintentional weight loss orgain is cause of concern and one should bring it to discussionwith their physician.

b. A cluster of numbers which may indicate cardiometabolicrisks;Serum triglycerides (mg/dl) - e•150HDL cholesterol (mg/dl)Men - <40Women <50Blood pressure (mm Hg) - e”130/e”85Fasting blood glucose (mg/dl) e”110Waist circumference (inches)Men > 40Women >35

There are other numbers like serum creatinine level and HghArC andother parameters which your physician might suggest and helpmonitor.

The other significant issues I come across in my practice are relatedto food. We do integrate Chinese, Maxican, Italian, Greek andAmerican foods in our diet. I would like to list few concerns I comeacross frequently.

a. Portion size of foods – Serving size of food is important whenone is counting calories or carbohydrates in diet. Servingsize of milk is a cup (8 ounces or 240 ml) and fruit juices is ½cup (4 ounces or 120 ml). Portion size of rice is 1/3 cup(cooked) and bread is 1 slice. Limited information is availableon portion sizes of Indian foods.

b. Food groups – We do tend to selectively eliminate foodgroups. It is important to include all the food groups (starches, fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat, fats) in some way in thediet since they provide essential nutrients to maintain health.Women do tend to give up milk early in life even though itis suggested that we have at least 2-3 servings/day from thedairy group. It is amusing when some of us wrinkle our nosesto show our dislike for milk and prefer to take calcium pills.Of course the choices change if one is lactose intolerant orhas food allergies.

c. Exercise – Indian culture offers a whole variety of exerciseregimens to be included in daily life. Surya Namaskar, yoga, meditation are all good ways to soothe nerves and tone upthe muscles. Lack of time is a common excuse we all cite fornot being active. The unfortunate part is when our childrenpick up those bad practices from the parents and think thatchanging channels on remote is one of the best form ofexercise some one came up with.

d. Natural herbs, vitamins – We do include certain homeremedies in addition to the regular medicines prescribed bythe physicians. The herbs do tend to interact with medicinesand should be discussed with the primary care physician. The vitamins and minerals should ideally come from food.Extra supplements of certain vitamins may be indicated incertain disease conditions but mega doses of self prescribedvitamins may not offer any additional benefit.

e. Reduce stress – This is easier said then done. However weneed to find ways to reduce stress in life. It may vary fromlistening to music, playing golf, playing cards, gettinginvolved in temple/community/charity projects, reading orsitting in a park with no specific agenda or whatever works.Traditionally we worry for ourselves, a generation before us,coming generation, our neighbor, our community, nation, the world and the galaxy. It gets transcribed into some of ourhealth related problems. It is therefore important to find arelaxing technique that works for you to reduce stress in life.

Last but not the least, I strongly recommend regular visit to thephysician and taking charge of your health issues. I would stronglyrecommend that we use our own local resources to help and discussthe various health issues faced by our community. I applaud theefforts of IAI in providing the forum to discuss these difficult andsensitive issues and help identify the local resources available to us.
