Maintain Your Branding Vernon Browser is designed to be customised to your brand requirements. Whether you are a branch of a larger institution, or have a stand-alone website, we have solutions to maintain your branding.

Manage collections and highlights The ability to group your published content into collections and highlights gives the opportunity to direct visitors regardless of their prior knowledge of your collection. Whether you wish to simplify navigation by dividing the collection into recognisable categories or to emphasise groups or individual objects, you have the freedom to organise your content.

Simple and Advanced search Simple Searches are designed to be quick and efficient, searching intelligently across all publically available text to present the best matches first. If you have something more specific in mind, Advanced Search functionality combines queries on multiple fields. Terms can be included or excluded, date ranges can be searched and pick lists can be used to guide the user.

Multiple Views Search results can be displayed in different ways, beginning with a simple List View, where text information is shown for multiple results. Detail View focuses on one object allowing maximum information and multiple related images, while Label View will display multiple listings on screen with a thumbnail image and descriptive text. Additionally, Lightbox View will emphasise the images of the collection items. Collections that have location data can enable results to be viewed in Google Maps View. The website design stage when you can choose which views to use and their final appearance.

Favourites shortlistUsers may create their own shortlist of results that are interesting or relevant to them. This list is maintained throughout the current session, regardless of other searches. Shortlists can be viewed in any of the different results views and may be printed.

User Comments Visitor feedback is an increasingly valuable component of an online collection. You can allow visitors to comment on individual objects and receive automatic notifications when new comments are added. Vernon Systems can also develop custom forms for bookings and requests.

Links included in textFields can be presented as a clickable link, allowing visitors to easily navigate to similar records or to link to content elsewhere on the Internet. Examples include an artist’s name linking to a person record, a classification linking to all objects with the same classification (e.g. show me all vases) or a reference in your data linking to an external source, such as a blog entry in your main website.

SecurityYour source data remains separate and secure in Vernon CMS with the website only holding the data that you have chosen to export. You can choose what information you want to publish online. Individual images can be tagged as restricted so that they will not get published. Access to published information can also be restricted, with functionality to add login requirements to view specific fields.

Automatic DirectoryVernon Browser automatically generates a list of all public objects for search engine access, making your collection more visible online through search pages such as Google.

!!Vernon Systems provides two different public access products: Vernon Browser and eHive.

Vernon Browser is integrated directly with Vernon CMS, so provides options for both periodic manual publishing of groups of records and images, and automated updating of the website when records change.

eHive is a low-cost cloud-based system (www.ehive.com) which includes options to contribute records to aggregator cultural websites such as Digital NZ, Culture Grid (UK) and Trove (Australia). There is no direct connection between Vernon CMS and eHive - data must be exported from Vernon CMS and sent to Vernon Systems to import into the live ehive.com site.

Both products provide options for building branded websites through templates or through the programming interfaces. For eHive branded sites can be built in WordPress using our eHive plugins. The customisation work can be done with the help of our developers. This typically takes 3-6 days depending on the complexity of the design.

!!Vernon Browser is a Java Enterprise Edition application running in a JBoss application server with Java. The front-end uses Java Server Pages technology with a custom tag library to embed the content. A MySQL database stores the content published from Vernon CMS and keeps it secure and independent from the original records in Vernon CMS. Most sites host the Vernon Browser on servers run by Vernon Systems. !Vernon Browser includes an HTTP/XML search API which can be used to incorporate the data into other applications. !The River and Rowing Museum is one example client that is using Vernon Browser. They have approximately 20,000 items online at present (collection.rrm.co.uk).

!eHive is a web-based collection management system, providing a low cost and simple way for smaller organisations to catalogue and share collections online. It offers seven cataloguing categories and an API to connect with other websites and web projects. Being Software as a Service (SaaS) the application is hosted and maintained by Vernon Systems. !eHive is designed for small to medium sized museums, galleries, heritage sites or private collections, looking for a simple, easy to use cataloguing and public access. You can access eHive from any computer with internet access using a standard web browser, manage your objects and generate professional reports. !Custom branded websites can be developed using our WordPress plugins, or our programming interface. These are described in more detail on the eHive website. (developers.ehive.com) !In May 2014 the Gold Museum Ballarat won the Sir Rupert Hamer Award in the Community Archives Category. The museum uses Vernon CMS to manage their collection and eHive to publish selected records to their website. The website built using eHive's WordPress plugins. They currently have over 60,000 records online and growing. (www.goldmuseum.com.au/explore-collection). !Vernon CMS includes an option to export to eHive using an XML format. This means that institutions using Vernon CMS for collection management can still choose eHive for public access. At this stage there are several major features that Vernon Browser supports that are not covered in eHive. At present data exported from Vernon CMS to eHive has to go through Vernon Systems. We do a test import of the data before uploading it to the live eHive.com site. !!
