Friends of the Library Book Review Luncheon On Friday, May 4, Betty McCall will review the book All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an In-dependent Nation by Rebecca Traister. Through a mix of inter-views and historical analysis, Traister writes a book that the New York Times describes as a “well researched, deeply infor-mative examination of Women’s bids for independence, span-ning centuries.” The publication was a NYT Notable Book for 2016. Dr. McCall is an asso-ciate professor in the Sociology and Anthropology Department at Lycoming College where she has been the recipient of a Ju-nior Faculty Teaching Award. Her PhD is from Vanderbilt University. McCall has been a

grant writer and evaluator for STEP, Inc. Community Connect AmeriCorps Program from 2007 to the present. Some of her areas of specialty are medical sociology, gerontology and gen-der. McCall chose All the Single Ladies because, “As a product of the 1960s, and south-ern culture, I felt continual pres-sure to be married, defined as the epitome of success for wom-en of my ilk. This book highlights the change in that dogma and the resulting change in American cul-ture.”

The next Book Review Luncheon

will be Friday, October 5, 2018.

The luncheon will start at 12 noon in the Lowry Room of the Welch Family Wing of the James V. Brown Library. Those who wish may purchase lunch at noon for $6. To reserve lunch, use the online reservation calendar on the library website (http://calendar.jvbrown.edu) where you will find a prompt for reservations or call Leslie at the Library at 570-326-0536, ext. 134. Reservations should be made by Wednesday, May 2. (Please note that you should

register only if you wish to reserve lunch.) You may bring your own lunch or simply attend the book review, which will start at 12:30 p.m. Parking is available in the public lot off Market Street, adjacent to the Welch Wing.

Join us for a fun, literary and tasty evening at the Herdic House on July 21 to celebrate the Friends of the Library’s first Hemingway Night. The evening pays tribute to Papa’s birthday, adventurous life, and, most importantly, his literary influence on 20th century fiction. The event, a fundraiser for the Friends of the Library, will be held at the Herdic House, 407 W. 4th Street, Williamsport, and will include Cuban cuisine; readings from Hemingway’s works by Mark Noe, English professor at Penn College; and an auction featuring artworks from local artists. The cost is $50 per person and includes appetizers, entrée, dessert and coffee. Doors open at 6pm for cocktails, and dinner will be served at 7pm. Please email [email protected] to make a reservation for this event.
