Departments Head:

ESOL- Ms. Franco- Buenos Dias: We are continuing be very busy in the ESOL classes with many new students arriving from all over the world daily. This week we have been studying about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. The students are reading several articles where they are learning how to prove their answers through textual evidence. Monday Ms. Roberts and I began the WIDA testing for the A1 & A2 ESOL students. This test replaces the CELLA test from last year. Today the rest of the ESOL students will be taking their tests. This test consists of a listening, reading, writing and individual speaking portions. The individual speaking test will be given this week to all the ESOL students. The selected Immigrant/ESOL students are continuing with afterschool tutoring. The students are using the Imagine learning program along with other teacher lead activities. Last week the names of all students who have been attending tutoring were entered into a drawing and the tutoring company awarded two luck students tickets to the Cougar Challenge. The next raffle prize will be for movie tickets.

ESE- Mrs. Winter- In the SVE classes, they are preparing for the Special Olympics Basketball Program, which will be held in April. A coordinator from the program will be coming to help train and work with the students on skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting. SVE classes have also begun their FSAA (Florida Standards Alternative Assessment) testing, which is administered one on one with each of their

students. Support staff was able to assist with completing WIDA testing of ESOL students this past month. Mainstreamed students were also tested in their small groups and all accommodations were in place for the writing component FSA testing on March 1st. We will continue to review IEP's and accommodations, as well as work with the general education teachers, as we prepare for Math and ELA FSA testing in April.

Math- Mrs. Cordoves- Our Math teachers are working very hard to finish teaching all of the standards required for the FSA test, as well as reviewing standards already covered. Our teachers are integrating specific FSA practice into their daily warm-ups, class activities, and homework. We are also using the benchmark practice test available on USA test prep to provide the students with as much practice as possible. After Spring Break, Math teachers will be administering an in-class, practice FSA test to get the kids familiarized with the system and the tools available on the test. Remember that you as a parent can also access this practice through the FSA website (FSAssessments.org)

We have a lot of material to cover and review so we are requesting the help of our parents. Please encourage your child to review and practice at home. The district has put together a Parent and Student Resource page at tiny.cc/msg1. This page is designed to be a resource for all parents and students across Broward County. Resources include, activities, strategies, interactive worksheets, digital tools, and other practice for the Mathematics Florida Standard Assessment (FSA). Students can also log into the textbook website (my.hrw) to review past lessons.

Electives- Mrs. Sikorski- The peer counselor’s Everyone Matters display is in the cafeteria. There are over 200 pictures of students, teachers, administrators, secretaries, custodians, cafeteria workers, and our SRO. Please take a moment to go by and see it and embrace all the differences at TTMS. The peer counselors also sponsored the 2nd Annual Hoops for Heart basketball game this year. We raised $6,020 all of which goes to the American Heart Association. I took 100 students to Nova High School to see Weight Of Words play about bullying. My students learned how to be an upstander, not a bystander!!One of my peer counselors, Sophia Cury, was recognized in the Sun-Sentinel for Kids of Character. For the past 2 years she has purchased Dunkin Donut gift cards and passed them out to all the custodians. Also at the beginning of the year instead of donating one Cougar care package she donated 12 bags filled with protein bars, snacks, water, and personal care items with a personal inspirational message on the outside of the bag. The girls’ volleyball team won the 2016 County Championship. It has been a long dry spell athletically for TTMS and it was exciting to win another banner for our school. All 8 th grade technology students have completed the unit on HTML webpage coding. Some are extending their learning by coding at home. 1st hour is exploring the world of 3D design utilizing Tinkercad and will have the opportunity to have their project 3D printed with Makerbot 3D printer. 2 nd hour is working with LEGO Mindstorm Robotics Kits.
