From the publisher’s desk ...Welcome to this guide to education in Abu Dhabi, the second in Abu Dhabi Week’s series of
Really Useful Guides.
For the Really Useful Guide to Education we are pleased to welcome Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank as
our sponsor. Because education is a prime driver for development at both the personal and the national
level, we recognise that financial considerations may well play a significant role in the decisions we take as
parents or as students.
ADCB has always played its part in this, primarily by making available specialized financial solutions that
support the family during what can be a particularly expensive time. The best education will always be
relatively expensive and the most attractive educational options will need to be seized as they arise.
‘Banking on Education’ is the latest offering from ADCB which aims to help simplify those crucial decisions.
When we launched this series of Guides late last year with the Really Useful Guide to Health Services
in Abu Dhabi, we were convinced that there was a real need for a well-researched good-quality source
of usable, useful information about Abu Dhabi. We feel that the Guides give you that; something that you
might well use right now, certainly something that you’ll want to keep handy for reference.
We did consider doing a single everything-you-need-to-know book, and one day we might even compile
one; but the scope and scale of such an undertaking would be massive, and we certainly wouldn’t be able
to give it away at no charge. So we felt that it would be better to address individual areas of life in Abu
Dhabi, and present the information in a format that meant we could include it with an issue of Abu Dhabi
Week magazine.
The Really Useful Guide to Education is the second in the series, and as you’ll see it is the single most
comprehensive collection of information and contact details for schools and colleges in the Emirate
– ranging from kindergartens to vocational training establishments. If you have a child, or if you are
considering higher education, this is your essential starting point.
Can’t locate a copy of one of the past RUGs? Don’t worry – all the Really Useful Guides are also available
on our website at www.AbuDhabiWeek.ae.

“Unless wealth is used in conjunction with knowledge to plan for its use, and unless there are enlightened intellects
to direct it, its fate is to diminish and to disappear. The greatest use that can be made of wealth is to invest it in creating generations of educated and trained people.”
- HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nayhan
Educationin Abu Dhabi
It has long been an underlying policy of the UAE government that educational development is vital to
economic success, especially for the long term in a post-oil future. Around a third of the federal budget is allocated to the Ministry of Education, and the current system of development includes an active public-private partnership programme intended to bring best practice from the world to the UAE.
Today the UAE can offer a comprehensive education from kindergarten to university, with a mix of private and public facilities. For the country’s citizens, education is provided free at all levels; primary and secondary education is compulsory up to ninth grade (normally 15 years old). All courses are taught in Arabic with English introduced in grade one for one period per day.
For non-citizens, and especially for those whose first language is not Arabic, enrolment in the public school system is available for a nominal fee; it is based on a number of criteria and subject to a number of seats not to exceed a predetermined number.
Alternatively there is a broad range of options (and a spread of fee levels) in the private sector, again at all levels. Most of the private schools in Abu Dhabi cater for the children of expatriates, and a variety of different curricula and qualifications are on offer. These schools need to follow one of the systems accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education.
Nationals can attend state-run colleges and universities
free of charge if they meet the educational standards required. Expatriate students were originally excluded from these establishments, but that was rescinded in mid-2006 and admission for expatriate students is now based on merit (fees are levied for non-citizens). In addition, a rapidly increasing range of private institutions, many with international accreditation, supplement the private sector.
ADEC and its plans for Abu Dhabi’s education systemThe Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), an independent corporate body, was established in 2005 to develop education and educational institutions in the Emirate. ADEC’s mission statement is “to produce world-class learners who embody a strong sense of culture and heritage and are prepared to meet global challenges”; elsewhere the Council says it has a mandate “to elevate the quality of education in Abu Dhabi to the highest international standards to ensure that all residents have access to high-quality education provision”.
ADEC is working closely with the UAE Ministry of Education in formulating education plans for Abu Dhabi within the framework of the UAE’s general education policy, but its broad role is to oversee, regulate and drive development initiatives across all education levels and including both public and private education.
Given the varying requirements and challenges, ADEC has developed individual research-based strategic plans

Villa schoolsThe so-called villa schools – post-nursery schools located in a villa or some other structure that was not intended for use as a school – developed historically to serve demand for private education with fees lower than the norm. These schools do not meet ADEC’s quality standards because of the inherent health and safety risks, and there has been an ongoing process of closures and relocation for villa schools in the past couple of years.
Indeed, all schools have been informed by the Abu Dhabi Municipality (ADM) and ADEC that they need to be in purpose-built facilities by the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year. However, closure will be enforced only when ADEC has been able to identify appropriate places for the students.
tailored to meet the specific development objectives for each of the sectors for which it has responsibility. All of these plans are guided by the Abu Dhabi Education Policy Agenda with the ultimate goal of transforming Abu Dhabi into a diversified, innovation-based, knowledge-producing society.
ADEC’s 10-Year Strategic Plan, which was officially launched in June 2009, identifies challenges facing the range of schools from kindergarten to Year 12 (16-17 years). The plan focuses on four key priorities:
improve the quality of schools•improve access to quality education•provide students with affordable quality •private educationpreserve national identity and local culture •
At the core of this strategy is the so-called ‘New School Model’ for public schools, which includes a new curriculum, modern teaching methods, improved teacher and school leadership quality, and more interactive and integrated learning environments.
ADEC’s Higher Education Strategic Plan also has four main objectives:
raise the quality of higher education to meet •international standardsalign academic programs with Abu Dhabi’s •Vision 2030foster the development of research •and development
support increased access to higher education •through affordable education alternatives and scholarships.
In addition to developing UAE-based institutions through a range of improvement efforts, Abu Dhabi will continue to develop strategic partnerships with both leading international higher education institutions and with industry to meet the higher education goals of the emirate.
Additionally ADEC says it is in the final stages of development for the Private Education Strategy and Technical and Professional Education Strategy, both of which are expected to be launched in 2011.
Private schools in Abu DhabiADEC regards the development of a large and effective private education sector as a key priority for Abu Dhabi.
Private education already has a significant presence in the Emirate – over 180 private schools are currently registered in the Emirate, 120 of them in Abu Dhabi city, and between them they offer a range of curriculums including British, American, French, Indian, and Filipino systems as well as International Baccalaureate and the native UAE Ministry of Education curriculum
Expatriates represent around 70 percent of pupil numbers at private schools, with Emiratis making up the rest.
SchooldaysThe school year is divided into three terms, as in the West, but because of the climate the summer recess is longer than elsewhere.
Extended hours during term days ensure that the total tuition year is of similar length, however – a school year typically runs to between 180 and 190 instructional days.
The school week runs from Sunday to Thursday. Infants usually start at around 8am and finish at 1.15pm. Juniors normally start 15 minutes earlier and finish 15 minutes later.
For seniors there will probably be more flexibility, with seven hours of lessons starting at 7.30 or 8am and finishing between 2.30 and 3.00pm.

Private school feesAnnual tuition fees vary considerably between schools. Generally fees are calculated on a sliding scale that increases with the age or grade level of the student. Fees charged by private schools typically include some or all of these elements:
Registration: a one-time charge made at the start •of the child’s placement in the schoolTuition: the major charge, normally a per-term fee•Books: some (but not all) schools make an extra •charge for essential textbooks that they supply. This is normally paid termlyBuses: most private schools run their own bus •routes and charge separately on a termly basis for thisUniform: some schools are the sole supplier of •their school uniforms
The fees charged by private schools must be approved in advance by ADEC; the approved fees listed on the ADEC website (http://tinyurl.com/27dzcw9) represent the maximum that may be charged, and in theory schools may choose to impose lower fees.
Key elements of this policy are ...Schools are not allowed to charge parents for •a whole year’s fees as a single payment One-time registration fees are applied only when •students join the school and must be deducted from the tuition fees that yearRegistration fees must be less than 5 per cent •of the annual tuition fee and must not exceed AED 500‘Re-registration’ fees and related charges for any •student who is already enrolled are prohibited
The intake is growing at five percent per year.School fees have to be approved by ADEC, and the ADEC website lists some of the
fees for individual schools at http://tinyurl.com/37tk9gn – this information covers schools that opened in 2010 or which have received approval to increase their fees for the present school year. Fees for other schools will not have changed from 2009/10; ADEC says it intends to post the complete list eventually.
All private schools have to adhere to ADEC’s minimum standards and can expect to be evaluated through ADEC’s own inspection process, a formalised self-evaluation followed by the review of an independent and experienced inspection team. The inspectors spend approximately one week in each school under review, measuring school performance against its self-evaluation and ADEC’s standard framework.
Results are shared and discussed with each school, and recommendations are made to help the school develop a systematic and effective long-term school improvement plan. All schools have the potential to improve, and are expected to have school improvement plans in place, regardless of their initial evaluation results.
The inspection framework is based on nine standards: overall school effectiveness•student achievement and progress•personal development of students•teaching quality•curriculum•protection, care, guidance, and support of students•quality of facilities•school resources•leadership and management •
The annual inspection for 2009-2010 covered 185 private schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and an alarming 68 percent of them were rated as unsatisfactory on these measures. ADEC declined to say which schools had received poor reviews – “we have conducted this inspection to encourage schools, parents and even students to cooperate in improving the quality of their school, and a report will be submitted to each school on areas that need improvement once inspection results are final,” said ADEC DG Dr Mugheer Khamis.
12 per cent of private schools did receive ‘above average’ ratings and a further 20 percent were judged ‘satisfactory’.

Preschooling:nurseries and kindergartens
In principle, preschool nurseries and kindergartens are a good way to aid the development of any child – in physical and psychological terms as well
as academically. And in practice Abu Dhabi is well supplied with good options; staffing levels tend to be good and staff are generally well trained, facilities are good, and there are enough options to ensure that you’ll probably find more than one conveniently located option (with the exception of some of the newer off-island developments).
Acceptance age varies widely, however. Some nurseries accept infants from three months old and are obviously geared to working parents; others emphasise a more academic pre-school course for which children will normally be accepted from the age of three years. Children will normally move on to KG-1 classes at a conventional school at age 4-5; virtually all of Abu Dhabi’s schools offer teaching from KG-1 level.
Fees also vary widely but will usually include a one-time registration fee as well as the termly charges.
Most nurseries and kindergartens are English-speaking, though there are French and other options; several incorporate a second European language and most will seek to introduce older children to Arabic as well.
Finding a pre-schoolNothing beats a visit when you’re looking for a pre-school, but it also makes sense to use the many bulletin boards frequented by mothers. Try these:

The Montessori methodThe Montessori method is an approach to educating children based on the research and experiences of Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori. The central principle is that the child has a natural ability for self-directed development; the role of the teacher (sometimes called director or guide) is therefore to watch over the environment to remove any obstacles that would interfere with this development.
That can include "lessons" to show how various self-teaching materials can be utilised. Lessons are also used to resolve misbehaviour.
Montessori schools are usually for young children (aged 2–6). Although the Montessori name is widely used, it is not a trademark or a standard; schools differ in their interpretation, practical application, and philosophies.

Which child seat is right for your child?Baby Seat (Group 0: Newborn to 13 Kg/up to 12 months ) It is possible to purchase a base that fits into the car and a carrier with a handle The carrier can be moved easily between cars. Many infant seats fit into a stroller, making it easy to transport the child both in and outside the vehicle. These seats should only be used in rear facing position. It is recommended to keep the child as rear facing as long as possible during his first year.
Toddler Seat (Group 1: 9-18 Kg/9months-3.5years) Babies who outgrow their infant seats should move into the bigger Group 1 seat to take full advantage of the safety benefits that the larger seat provides.Parents should never turn a child forward-facing if they are younger than 9 months and weigh less than 9 kg. It is recommended to keep the child as rear facing as long as possible during his first year.
Booster Seat (Group 2/3: 15-36 Kg/3.5-12 years)A booster seat with a back and sometimes side-wings near the head for ultimate protection in case of side crashes. Use with a lap and shoulder seatbelt system. Others come without the back called booster cushions but they don’t give the head support that the back and side wings give.

Aldar Academies promises a bright future
“We aim to place schools at the heart of our communities by establishing high-quality sustainable educational provision within stimulating and secure environments. We also aim to support the Abu Dhabi education authorities with their wider mission of raising the standards of educational provision throughout the Emirate.”
This is the mission statement of Aldar Academies which reflects its aims and aspirations. For us, placing schools at the heart of communities includes the wider population of Abu Dhabi, not just those developments built by Aldar.
The Pearl Primary School was the first Aldar Academy and was established to meet the increasing demand for high-quality education in Abu Dhabi. The building was an existing government school generously donated by the Abu Dhabi Education Council and was transformed into a primary school of the highest quality. It opened with 280 pupils in September 2007 and has now almost reached its capacity of 552. www.pearlprimary.sch.ae
Aldar Academies’ second school was Al Yasmina. It is a purpose-built all-age school designed to meet the wide-ranging needs of pupils from 3 to 18 years. It opened in September 2008 with over 700 pupils on day one and 150 more pupils joined during the first academic year. It now has 1,450 pupils and is expected to meet its capacity of 1,800 in the near future. It delivers the IGCSE programme as well as A-Level examinations. www.alyasmina.sch.ae
The continued demand for school places at Aldar Academies led to the opening of our third school in three years. Al Muna Primary School was designed and developed along the same lines as the Pearl Primary School. It had 272 pupils registered at the start of its first academic year and by December 2010 had 480 pupils registered. www.almunaprimary.sch.ae
In order to meet the secondary school ambitions of pupils from the Pearl and Al Muna we have designed a state-of-the-art secondary school in the heart of Abu Dhabi, called Al Bateen. Its dramatic and attractive design is also practical and will meet the academic, creative and sporting needs of its pupils when it opens in September 2011. This school will deliver iGCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Whilst our wonderful buildings enhance education, it is the carefully selected school leaders and teaching staff that are the secret of our success. This is just the start of the journey for Aldar Academies. We already have two further all age schools scheduled for opening in 2012 and 2013. We plan to open schools on Yas Island, Al Raha Beach, Al Merief and Al Ain, as well as further developments on Abu Dhabi Island itself.
The future for education in Abu Dhabi is indeed bright.

The seatbelt fit test Place your child in the back seat with their back against the vehicle seat.1.
Check to see if their knees bend at the edge of the seat. If they do, 2. go to the next step. If not, continue to use the booster seat.
Buckle the seatbelt around the child. Does the lap belt stay low on the 3. hips AND does the shoulder belt rest on the collarbone (and not the face or neck)? Unless both shoulder belt AND lap belt fit, do not use the seatbelt. Return to the booster seat until BOTH lap and shoulder belts fit. Never place the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back. It is dangerous!
Can the child stay in position for the duration of the trip? If yes, then 4. they are ready to use the seatbelt. If not, return to the booster seat.
The seatbelt does not fit if the child places the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back. This is an indicator that the child needs to ride on a booster seat.

ADCB: Banking on Education
True ambition never fades and ‘Banking on Education’ is aimed at enabling education for everyone. ADCB has tailored this suite of products to cater to three main life-stages: Those planning for their young children’s future education; those preparing for their older child’s progression into higher education; and those returning to education themselves.
“Banking On Education is a one-stop-shop for all of your education-related needs, whether you require funds to finance your education or advice for future planning,” said Sundar Parthasarathy, Executive Vice President-Consumer Assets.
To prepare for the launch of Banking On Education, ADCB has built relationships with schools and universities in and around the region in order to understand the pertinent needs of people.
“Through personal experience and our professional research with educational institutes the clear outcome is that education can get very expensive in the UAE. We also discovered that there are many young people
who go abroad for education, which becomes even more costly. These simple yet valuable insights give us a good reason to raise awareness of the importance of planning and saving for your children’s education as early on as possible’
If you are at the stage of considering your child’s future education needs, ADCB can help you make astute financial plans now to help provide them with the best opportunities. The institute and country where you or your children are planning to study can have a major bearing on the amount of funding that you will need.
“Fees at the local schools can be high,” said Parthasarathy ‘and when it comes to universities, course fees can probably exceed hundreds of thousands of dirhams per year. If they go to the US or the UK to study,
At ADCB we understand ambitious people and we recognise that a great education is the foundation for
achievement. Banking on Education is ADCB’s new and specially tailored suite of products designed to enable
and facilitate lifelong education.

living expenses have to be funded over and above the course fees and all these can be too onerous on parents. We have seen that many parents find it difficult to shell out such lump sum amounts if they don’t plan much in advance.
”There is no greater joy for a parent than to see the graduation ceremony of their child. It is the stepping stone to a new life of independence and the rewards of a professional career and so whatever your financial position, ADCB can guide you on a strategy to best fit your individual needs for funding the education of your children now and in the future.
“Experts are on hand to guide you through investment, and insurance and protection plans* to help save money over a period of time for education in the future. If it’s not just your children’s education that you are planning for, and it’s actually your own professional ambition that is driving you to study for a new qualification or course of study, ADCB is also here to assist with the finances. Whether you are planning to take an undergraduate degree, a master’s course or an MBA, you may need to access large sums of money quickly.
“Sometimes adults decide to further their education with these types of courses. Quite often it is not planned within their personal financial plans and so need to free up funds quickly in order to enrol on their course and make their ambitions come to life’.
In the event that you have not planned your education needs financially and would like to enrol in a new course and need to access money immediately, the ADCB Education Loan can lend up to AED 250,000, with a repayment period of up to 60 months**. For people of any age wanting to pursue education, or even fund someone else’s, our Education Loan can provide you with the financial certainty you need when making applications through a unique pre-approval system. ADCB is offering this service free of charge, meaning that you can be sure of your university finance before selecting your institution.
“Products and services of such nature are very common in other advanced parts of the world but, until now, these have rarely been available in
the UAE & that too as a composite package. At ADCB we have made a sincere attempt to meet the needs of people through this medium,” said Parthasarathy.
Over the coming months, ADCB will roll out a number of initiatives aimed at raising awareness of how Banking on Education can help realise people’s academic dreams.
As a starter, ADCB is spreading the word by teaming up with local schools and nurseries to host competitions that reward children and their parents for thinking about their future education.
For example, children will be asked to draw a picture of them as grown-ups, showing what they would like to be doing at work, whether it is being an artist or a lawyer,” explained Parthasarathy.
“At the events, each child will get an activity pack with colouring pencils and a certificate for taking part. It will just give the child an opportunity to show his parents his ambitions from a young age.”
So, whatever stage in life you or your children are at, Banking on Education’s suite of financial products will empower you to take the right decisions for now and the future. After all, your ambitions should only be governed by your potential.

Private schools
Many of the private schools in Abu Dhabi are oversubscribed and run waiting lists – parents should inquire well in advance of the actual date
on which their child needs a place. It was once true that oversubscription was compounded by the way some large employers would bulk-book places at what they considered the more prestigious schools for children of key workers.
As employers look to cut costs in the present climate of economic realism, this kind of block booking doesn’t happen so much now; while you will rarely get a 100 percent contribution to school fees. Some employers do still offer a school fees allowance in addition to salary. Indeed, the availability of subsidised schooling can often be a negotiation point for people taking a job in the UAE.
Note that it is compulsory to learn Arabic at all private schools in Abu Dhabi, though Arabic will not normally be the principal language for lessons or exams. Most schools voluntarily include an introduction to Gulf culture and religion.
information requiredThe information required to enrol a child in any UAE school will include ...
The school’s application form (often available via the school website)•Copies of birth certificates (which may need to be formally attested, depending on the school)•Copies of passports for both child and parents and copies of residence visa stamps (a copy of a UAE ID card will normally be acceptable)•Passport pictures of the child – up to four •Immunisation information and medical history for the child •If transferring from another school within the UAE, you will also have to produce ...•School records for the past one or two years, as applicable •An official transfer certificate detailing the child’s education, date of enrolment, year of placement, date of leaving the school, school •stamp and signature. This is a legal requirement. If the child has previously been schooled outside the UAE, you may have to produce a letter from the previous school confirming the •relevant year of education; this may need to be authenticated.
School uniformsUniforms vary from school to school but do reflect the prevailing temperatures outside and the prevalence of air conditioning indoors.
In primary school boys will generally wear cotton shorts, cotton shirt and a cotton sweatshirt; white socks and black shoes are commonly part of the uniform. Primary school girls usually wear a cotton dress, cotton sweater and white socks with black shoes.
At secondary school level the uniform will generally be similar though boys may have the option of trousers instead of shorts and the girls may have a choice of shorts, trousers or a regular-length skirt. Cotton shirts or polo shirts are typically worn with cotton sweaters, white socks and black shoes.

Choosing your school: Top tips from the british international School Abu DhabiWhat should i consider when i choose a school? Every school is different in terms of the curriculum they offer, their approaches to teaching and learning, programmes, facilities, location and so on. But try to keep your child in the same curriculum as their home country; they will find the transition easier if they remain in the national curriculum with which they are familiar. Changing curriculums can be tricky – students may have to repeat a year of study, and they could find themselves in an older or younger age group.
The best advice is to visit each school, meet the staff, ask questions and make sure you choose the school which is right for your child.
is school accreditation important?Yes, check that the school offers an accredited qualification such as IGCSE or IB. Some schools offer an ‘international curriculum’ which may not be recognised by reputable colleges and universities.
how do i apply?Plan ahead! The major enrolment intake occurs in September each year, with applications opening in January/February. Most schools accept new enrolments throughout the year if places are available.
Established schools often have waiting lists as their places are already full with siblings from existing families. But check out some of the newer schools as they may have places available on short notice.
Find out which documents you will need to provide – eg report cards, birth certificates, visas etc. In some cases documents may need to be attested in the home country, this can cost you time and money if you are not prepared.
What are the costs? Education costs include tuition fees, books and materials, uniforms, bus service, lunches, trips and excursions. Make sure you ask about all the costs up front to avoid any nasty surprises. Ask about any early bird or sibling discounts as this can be a great saving.
Here’s the typical range of fees for private schools in Abu Dhabi:Tuition Fees – KG: AED 31,000 to 55,000 per year•Tuition Fees – primary: AED 37,000 to 55,000 per year•Tuition Fees – secondary: AED 39,000 to 67,000 per year•Bus service: AED 5000 to 8000 per year•
Costs for textbooks, uniforms, trips and excursions can vary widely.
Alternative curriculums and qualifications
Between them the private schools of Abu Dhabi offer a wide range of curriculums, most derived from English-speaking educational systems and most predictably geared to the home countries of the expat community.
The UAE Ministry of Education has directed that three other subjects are integrated into any curriculum:
Arabic: compulsory for all non-Arab students from Kindergarten through •to Year 9. For Arab students it is compulsory through to Year 12.Islamic Studies (Muslim students): compulsory for all Muslim students •through to Year 12. Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (non-Muslim •students): compulsory through to Year 9.
The principal curriculums available in Abu Dhabi are detailed below.
national Curriculum of EnglandThis curriculum, commonly known as the “British” National Curriculum even though Scotland has its own system, is frequently followed because it fits so well into the English public examination system of GCSEs and A-levels which is accepted by universities in the UK and elsewhere. The curriculum covers the whole school experience from the age of 3 to 18.
GCSE The GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the qualification generally taken in a number of subjects by students aged 14–16 in secondary education in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and also in some other British territories and former dominions. Education to GCSE level is a pre-requisite for studying A-levels or the International Baccalaureate in Britain.
As with A-levels, there is a feeling among some observers that the GCSE is becoming devalued by consistent improvements in GCSE grades; there have been calls for GCSEs to be scrapped in favour of a national Diploma (though the UK government is unlikely to do this) and some private schools have removed GCSEs from their curriculum, instead taking students straight to A-level or IB or instead adopting the more academic IGCSE Double Award syllabus.
A-levelsThe Advanced Level General Certificate of Education, commonly referred to as A-levels, is offered by schools and colleges in England, Northern Ireland, Wales and elsewhere typically as the final qualification of school life. It is used as the standard entry qualification for university courses in those countries.
A-levels consists of six modules per subject, studied over two years and assessed by exam and coursework; three are normally assessed at the end of year one as a stand-alone qualification called “AS level” (Advanced Subsidiary level) with the other three taken at the end of the second year ("A2"). Satisfactory completion of AS and A2 modules in the same subject constitutes a complete A-level.

The steady rise in average grades suggests that A-levels are becoming easier, though the improved grades could represent higher levels of achievement due to improved teaching methods. Certainly many British universities have complained it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between students at the upper end of the ability spectrum; indeed, some universities have introduced their own entrance to select applicants.
The A-level has also been criticised because most students do not study more than three subjects in their final year – and they tend to be closely linked, rather than contrasting subjects that might broaden the student. In general however the A-level remains a good choice for students hoping for further education in Britain.
iGCSE The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (abbreviated IGCSE or iGCSE, and sometimes known as Cambridge IGCSE) is an internationally recognised alternative to (and equivalent to) the GCSE for students who are typically in the 14–16 age group.
By comparison with GCSEs, the IGCSEs resemble the old O-level qualifications with more essay-based questions and an emphasis on exam performance; the iGCSE is popular with traditionalists, and with those who have concerns about regular GCSEs lacking in challenge for brighter pupils.
The IGCSE offers a more flexible curriculum than GCSE, partly because it does not have to adhere to the English national curriculum. It is available in more than 100 countries and that too adds to its flexibility – the IGCSE is intended to be suitable for students whose first language may not be English, for instance.
iSCE/iSCThe Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is a private, non-governmental board of school education that conducts two examinations: The ICSE is a seven-subject exam (four compulsory, three elective) for students who have completed the first two years of the four-year High School programme – which typically means 15-16 years of age. ISC is taken two years later; English and Environmental Education are compulsory subjects, with students choosing at least three more subjects.
hSCThe Higher Secondary Examination is a centralised examination that students in India take after year 12. Clearing HSC is mandatory for pursuing higher education in India. The number of subjects, type of examination (theoretical, practical or both) and grading methods differ among the various education boards; so does the name – the common HSC exams are the AISSCE (All India Senior School Certificate Examination), CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations) and NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling).
SAbiS/ChoueifatThe SABIS school system runs the International Schools of Choueifat, the first of which opened in Lebanon as long ago as 1886. Today the SABIS schools have spread across the Gulf.
The SABIS system is an integrated academic programme for kindergarten through to year 12 with a mixture of academic, self-development, and life-preparation content that claims to blend quality education with traditional
The Emirates National Schools
The Emirates National Schools strive to provide a first-rate education to future Emirati leaders while preserving the beliefs that form the national identity.
A common learning platform connects campuses in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Mohamed Bin Zayed City and creates one system from pre-Schoolto the doorway to college.
ENS combines ambitious yet achievable standards, a mix of assessments, and rigorous college preparatory courses. The American program of study prepares students to succeed in the best universities in the world.
On the way to graduation, students acquire the knowledge and skills that enable them to navigate in today’s world. While English is the language of instruction, the curriculum features instruction for all secondary students in three languages (Arabic, English, and French) as well as Islamic and Arabic Studies. The path begins in Preschool and continues through Kindergarten and Primary School where it rests on a foundation of the International Baccalaureate program. The path ends in the secondary level program (separate Boy’s and Girl’s Schools) with the American Diploma Project and Advanced Placement courses where students earn credits that are recognized by colleges all over the world.
Focused on the needs of each individual, ENS prepares students for the 21st century. Because success today means competing in an international marketplace, academic content is important – but it is not enough. Skills matter. Critical thinking and international mindedness are important. ENS students see how school connects with the world at large. The aim is to help students achieve their dreams.
Learning at ENS is a continuous cycle of improvement. Standards set the target in each grade. Resources help support each student to the learning destination. In the classroom, teachers adjust instruction based on frequent progress monitoring. End-of-year assessments show the progress of students toward annual goals. Evaluation gauges system progress against international benchmarks. Accreditation by AdvancED is used to certify the quality of an ENS education.
With tradition as its foundation, the Emirates National Schools strive to ensure students are proud of their heritage and that their families are proud of them.

values of hard work and responsibility for self and others. The curriculum is regarded as intense and disciplined, with rigorous homework requirements; students typically achieve high academic standards.
In addition to core subjects of English, mathematics, and world languages, the SABIS curriculum includes science, social studies, art, music, health, physical education, and computers – it aims to provide a well-rounded, college-preparatory experience.
The essence of the system is a distinction between ‘essential’ and ‘non-essential’ concepts and skills required for a given class; essential concepts, which are those needed for future learning (and which are not formally taught after initial mastery), must be mastered before the student can advance to a higher grade level.
Non-essential concepts are those that do not interfere with future learning but which are part of the curriculum. All students must master a set amount over and above the minimum requirement. It is within this area where students will vary in the amount and depth of knowledge that they achieve.
international baccalaureate The IB is an international qualification now offered by 1,800 schools throughout the world. Founded in 1968 in Geneva and a non-governmental organisation of UNESCO, the Swiss-based International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) offers three educational programmes for children ages 3–19.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students aged 3 to 12. This started only in 1997 but is now offered by over 700 schools around the world – including the American International School in Abu Dhabi and Raha International School.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16. The programme consists of eight subject groups integrated through five areas of interaction that provide a framework for learning within and across the subjects. Students are required to study their mother tongue, a second language, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and technology. In the final year of the programme, students also engage in a personal project, which allows them to demonstrate the understandings and skills they have developed throughout the programme. Locally, only Raha International School offers the MYP.
The Diploma Programme (DP) for students aged 16 to 19. The DP has increasingly come into prominence as a good year 12 test – it is a two-year programme which requires academic rigour and features genuine breadth. All IB DP students take six courses (compared say to three or four for A-level students) and individually they are regarded as equal or superior to other year 12 qualifications for university entry. Five Abu Dhabi schools offer the IB DP:
Abu Dhabi International Private School •American Community School•American International School •Australian School of Abu Dhabi•Raha International School •
Traffic injuries are the leading cause of childhood injury deaths in the UAE Accidents happen all the time. In a collision at 25 km/hour, a child is thrown forward with a force 25 times its body weight. That means the average eight-year-old, weighing 30 kg, is moving forward with a weight of 750 kg – the same weight as a buffalo. For a child, that is very dangerous.
Yet, a recent survey found that only 2 percent of parents in the UAE use child car seats for their children. This figure needs to significantly rise.
Why? Between 2000 and 2006, traffic accidents accounted for 63% of all childhood injury deaths in the UAE.
Without question, your car is the most dangerous place for your child to be on a daily basis: but you can make it safer by using a child seat.
We know you take the safety of your child very seriously. If you don’t already have a child seat in your car, please do something about it now.

Universities and colleges
in Abu DhabiThe UAE has established a diversified system of higher education in a
very short period of time. Nationals can attend government institutions free of charge; a range of private institutions, most with international accreditation, supplement the mix.
One result is that the country now has one of the highest application rates in the world for higher education – 95 percent of female students here and 80 percent of males who are enrolled in their final year of secondary school are applying for admission to a higher education institution or to study abroad.
There are capacity issues at the federal universities and until recently non-nationals were not eligible to apply for courses there. Entry requirements are sometimes more stringent at the state institutions, too.
With the encouragement of local and federal authorities, a number of private institutions are competing to attract UAE nationals and (to a lesser extent) expatriates; students there expect a multi-cultural environment, a more diverse range of courses and qualifications that are more easily recognised internationally (usually with reputable accreditation from universities outside the country). It can also be easier to obtain a place at these colleges, with the economic imperative applying (fee-charging institutions tend to be for-profit businesses).
Academic and professional standards at all UAE institutions of higher education are overseen by the Commission for Academic Accreditation, established in September 2000 as an independent body reporting directly to the UAE Minister of Higher Education. The CAA licenses institutions and accredits individual degree programmes.
ADEC, the Abu Dhabi Education Council, plans to overhaul the higher education sector, aiming to improve the current environment for local universities and reduce the number of students dropping out.
Ideas under consideration include the development US-style community colleges, restructuring and improving special education, and producing a programme to enhance the quality of university staff. Regulations for licensing higher educational institutions are set to get tougher; ADEC also plans to set up a framework for inspecting universities which should be in place by next year.
Perhaps the most important reform is the promise of major investment in research and development. Under the new plan, $1.3bn will go into R&D by 2018; both federal and private universities will be invited to submit proposals to win research funding. Four key sectors have been prioritised: health, aerospace, semiconductors and renewable energy.

State institutions The government subsidises education for Emirati nationals, and most of the state-run higher education institutions are intended exclusively for nationals. They typically emphasise vocational or professional qualifications and have little or no liberal arts curriculum.
Abu Dhabi Men’s CollegeIn 1988 the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) opened with 239 students as part of a new system intended to offer a more technically-oriented education to Emirati nationals. Today, 12 men’s and women’s colleges – including campuses in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Madinat Zayed – service over 15,000 students; they include ADMC, the first of the HCT colleges to be established, and its companion arm, the Abu Dhabi Women’s College.
ADMC offers a variety of specialised professional programmes in engineering, business, IT, health science, communications technology and education.
Typically these programmes lead to a Higher Diploma; students can then continue to gain the extra credits required for a Bachelor’s degree.
HCT’s commercial arm, the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT), is now the largest private education provider in the region, providing specialised and often customised training that promotes entrepreneurship, creativity, and technological advance.
It also runs a Technology Park off Muroor Road called CERT, which is home to several high-tech ventures and the New York Institute of Technology.Web: www.admc.hct.ac.aeTel: 02 445 1514
Abu Dhabi Women’s CollegeADWC, part of the Higher Colleges of Technology system alongside Abu Dhabi Men’s College, offers degrees and diplomas to Emirati women from two campuses – one on the island on Muroor Road, the other in Khalifa A.
Programmes are essentially vocational and often technical. They include advanced media studies, business administration, teaching and education, engineering, health sciences and IT. In most cases students study for a Higher Diploma and can opt to continue with further credits to a Bachelor’s degree.Web: www.adwc.hct.ac.aeTel: 02 657 8000
Al Ain University of Science and TechnologyAU was established in 2005 with faculties of law, engineering and IT, pharmacy, education and business administration. It currently offers 11 accredited degree programmes and has around 3,900 students; the main campus remains in Al Ain but a branch opened a branch in Abu Dhabi in 2007. Arab Emirates UniversityThe Al Ain-based United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) opened in 1977. The country’s flagship national institution of higher education and the leading teaching and research institution in the UAE, UAEU offers over 70 undergraduate degrees and a number of graduate programmes across a wide range of disciplines.
International accreditation has been awarded to the professional academic programmes and the non-professional programmes undergo periodic external evaluation by international experts to ensure that they meet international standards. Collaboration with international institutions also opens up new opportunities for UAEU’s students.
UAEU has over 15,000 students, about three quarters of them female. Web: www.uaeu.ac.aeTel: 03 755 5557
Zayed UniversityZayed University (ZU) was established in 1998 by the Federal Government to educate women who are UAE nationals. There are campuses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, both run by a single administration and offering similar programmes.
ZU is organised academically into five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business Sciences, Communication and Media Sciences, Education, and Information Systems. It offers globally recognised bachelor and master degrees in Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, IT and Media plus several graduate certificate programmes.
The primary language of instruction is English, but the University expects its graduates to be fully bilingual in English and Arabic – there’s also an academic bridge programme for those looking to improve their language skills.
ZU has cooperative relationships with a number of leading institutions throughout the world.Web: www.zu.ac.aeTel: 02 445 3300

University of Strathclyde business SchoolThis is the 16th year of the University of Strathclyde Business School’s operations in the UAE, initially in Dubai and latterly in Abu Dhabi. The core offering is a well-regarded and internationally accredited MBA programme; the Strathclyde MBA is a 180 credit two-year part-time programme. With the exception of the mode of study, the International part-time MBA in the UAE is identical in all respects to that offered on a full-time basis in the UK; the entry criteria, assessment, books and materials are the same, and it is taught by the same Strathclyde academics who teach in Glasgow.
All classes are held on weekends and evenings. Intensive seminars held on average on weekend per month are conducted by Strathclyde academics who fly in from Scotland; three-hour tutorials with local tutors are held once a week, either in the evening or at weekends.
The programme has been deliberately designed for busy individuals in full-time employment. Although the course is notionally two years in length, the period of study can be extended up to six years to suit personal circumstances.
Alongside the MBA is a newer Master’s degree in Marketing and an MSc in Supply Chain & Logistics Management. All the Strathclyde masters programmes are offered on the basis of part-time attendance with face-to-face teachingWeb: www.strath.aeTel: 02 404 8546

Vocationaltraining
As the labour market has become more specialised and economies demand higher levels of skill, there’s an increasing demand for the kind of vocational education and training that prepares learners for a specific occupation.
Essentially of course this is market-driven; while the vocational education sector includes a diversity of occupational training – including information technology, travel and tourism, health, design, and beauty as well as specific trades such as mechanics – the level of fees charged and the scope of training provided mean
that the learner’s motivation to secure a suitable job determines exactly what kind of courses are offered. In general, these tend to be courses leading either to a job that will pay well; or a job for which it will be easier to find employment.
Vocational courses are often relatively short and intensive. They may not result in any kind of formal accreditation, but for some jobs and some employers the assurance that the course has been completed will be sufficient.

Profile
New York Film Academy: Fast track to professional filmmaking
For over 15 years, New York Film Academy has been at the forefront of international film education with its intensive, hands-on programmes for filmmaking and acting for film.
The New York Film Academy Abu Dhabi is a project of the Abu Dhabi Authority of Culture and Heritage (ADACH) as part of HE Mohammed Khalaf Al-Mazrouei’s vision to establish Abu Dhabi as a centre for film and television in the Middle East. Since the Abu Dhabi campus was established in February 2008, NYFA students have produced over 600 films and won many international awards.
The emirate of Abu Dhabi has made a massive commitment to developing the film and television industry in the region as well as promoting international culture and art. Among the projects launched by ADACH are the Middle East International Film Festival, new film studios in Studio City, a Middle East Film Fund, and a National Film Commission.
There is a wide variety of courses to suit different requirements. The most extensive are the one-year programmes, one on Filmmaking and the other on Acting for Film; both run on an eight-month calendar, divided into two 16-week semesters and separated by one or two weeks of vacation. Each of the 16-week semesters requires intensive time demands and a complete commitment on the part of the student.
Students in the one-year Filmmaking program receive over 1,000 hours of hands-on instruction and actual production experience. They all write, shoot, direct, and edit at least eight of their own short films (including a thesis sync-sound film). They shoot projects on 16mm film, digital, 35mm film, and HD. All projects are edited digitally.
This is an intensive, accelerated programme of learning and production; it is for people who have the passion to plunge into full-time filmmaking, but do not want to spend three or four years in a traditional film school. What makes NYFA programmes unique is the fact that students will write, shoot, direct and edit their own movies.
The extraordinarily popular One-Year Acting for Film programme is unlike any other actor-training program in the world — a cutting-edge exploration into the art and practice of acting for the screen. Students participate in a broad array of core classes that introduce them to finding the actor within, while simultaneously training their instrument to do the kind of technical, emotional, and physical work necessary for film acting. During the second semester, the focus intensifies on applying the techniques they have learned to more elaborate scene work, on-camera exercises, and film shoots. All students will perform in a short film production, oftentimes original work that was created and developed by the students in collaboration with their instructors.
An array of shorter courses is also available – one, four, and eight weeks filmmaking or acting. There are also specific short courses on digital filmmaking, a one-week music video programme, and evening-only options for those who cannot commit to full-time programmes during the day.All courses are taught in English.
Programmes and short-term workshops have an open enrolment – no previous experience is required. However, all programmes are extremely intensive. Students who enrol should be prepared to live and breathe their work during the course of their studies. Given the nature of filmmaking and the necessity of working in crews, students must be willing to devote themselves not only to their own projects but also to their classmates’ projects as well.
At the conclusion of all programs, a graduation ceremony and final presentation of student work is held. Final Films, Animation, Showcase Performances. Students retain digital master tapes of their film and video work to include in their portfolios.
The New York Film Academy Abu Dhabi is located at the Abu Dhabi Film Centre, next to Abu Dhabi TV just off Muroor Road.
The President of Abu Dhabi Film School is Dr Simon Hunter who developed his experience in media and teaching as a Director of the Centre for Film, Television and Screen-based Media at Bond University. In addition to his exceptional academic achievements, Dr Hunter’s professional writing credits include feature films and television series for Columbia Tri-Star, Fox, NBC, and Australian television.
The faculty of the Abu Dhabi film school is comprised of seasoned professionals from around the world who have a passion for communicating their knowledge and mentoring aspiring filmmakers and actors.

VETIs provide a structured link between school and the labour market by providing nationally recognised qualifications at the end of a three-year programme. Successful completion results in a diploma, which can either provide a gateway to national and international institutes of higher learning or allow the graduates to join the workforce directly.
The original – ADVETI, the Abu Dhabi arm – was established in 2007 as a partnership between Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and TAFE NSW, the largest Australian government vocational education provider (the Technical and Further Education Commission of New South Wales). ADVETI offers a very wide range of Diplomas, all of which include a work placement; subject areas are Information Technology, Services, Business, Design and Environment. Industry-specific courses include the Enhancing Guest Experience Programme, a joint venture with the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority that provides a training opportunity for all tourism employees who have direct contact with visitors.
