According to owner Roger Saldivar, also owner of R&R Body Shop on the Western Highway, he buys at Brothers Habet thanks to its ability to meet all his needs and the friendly and reliable staff and products. This was immensely helpful to Mr. Saldivar, known as Peachy by most, since getting supplies to Caye Caulker can prove very difficult. Thanks to Brothers Habet’s direct deliveries to the port of departure, Peachy had one less thing to worry about. Peachy hopes his hotel will inspire Belizeans to vacation within their own country. Why leave Belize when we have resorts like this right at home? And unlike many hotels Island Magic caters especially to families looking to getaway for a few days.

For more info about Island Magic Beach Resort visit their website at www.islandmagicbelize.com

For the fourth year running Brothers Habet is giving students a chance to show off their artistic talents. This year we’ll be introducing new themes into the mix highlighting the wisdom of Belize’s heroes:

“The children must learn to walk in the footsteps of their ancestors’ - Paul Nabor

“Teach the children our language and our songs; our beliefs and our dances, the time has come for it to be preserved.” - Andy Palacio

“The time to save our country is before you lose it.”- Hon. Philip Goldson

“The new Belizean man and woman is known by his or her lively interest and energetic and optimistic approach to the many problems that come from progress and growth.”- Hon. George Price

“Whenever you get stuck, pick up a book, learn something new, apply it and move on.”- Rachael Heusner.

Put yourself to the test and you can be a winner like 2010’s Noemi and Oscar Flores from St. Joseph School. Prizes include an exterior paint job for the student’s school and cash prizes for the students. The Top 50 winners will have their art displayed all over Belize in a Travelling Art Exhibition. The top 12 will also have their art featured in a stunning full-color calendar and receive $100.00 BZ. The competition is open to all primary and secondary schools. Ask your Teachers or Principals for more details or visit brothershabet.bz for rules and info on past competitions.

LIL’ FIXIT’S TIDBITSTO WORK WITH

Concrete, produced at an estimated rate of 7 billion cubic yards per year, is the second most widely consumed substance on Earth, after Water.

Sherwin-Williams recommends the following technique for using a paint roller: Cover about a two-foot-square with rolling pattern resembling an ‘N’. Cross roll to spread the paint. Finish, with light roller strokes in one direction, at a right angle to the cross roll.

Wood and metal screws, the carpenter’s and machinist’s vise, the propeller of a boat or airplane, Archimedes’ screw, and many other devices are applications of the screw.

Experts recommend that you grip the bell end of the handle for heavy hitting and the slight flair at mid-handle for lighter blows. Quality hammers have tapered handles to provide a firm grip at either position.

MR. FIXIT’SDO IT YOURSELF

These days we’re all concerned about keeping our property safe. Most times a regular lock won’t cut it on its own. In those cases it’s best to install a deadlock for added security.

A deadlock is one of the toughest, most secure locks you can install on your door. Also known as a dead bolt, the deadlock keeps your apartment, house, office, business or classroom protected from break-ins. You can easily install a dead bolt yourself by following the four quick steps below. The job shouldn’t take much longer than 30 minutes.Brothers Habet has a wide range of lock sets for every taste and budget with Brands like Geo, Kwikset and Homer. Come check out the extensive selection and be secure as well as stylish.

Supplies: Deadlock kit, Drill and bit, Screwdriver, Screws (if not provided in your lock kit)

Step 1 – Purchase Your DeadlockBefore you get started, go to the hardware store nearest you to select the dead bolt that’s right for your needs. The most common types of deadlocks include the single-cylinder lock and the double-cylinder lock. The single-cylinder model has a drawback: You can jostle it out of place and accidently lock the door when you slam it. For this reason, the slam-proof double-cylinder deadlock makes a better choice.

Step 2 – Choose Where to Install the DeadlockThere’s no firm rule as to exactly where on the door you should install your deadlock, but you can consider a few guidelines. You need the lock to be located in a location that’s easy for you to insert a key; but even more importantly, you should maximize the effect of all your locks by leaving at least 6 inches between the dead bolt and your regular lock. In fact, deadlocks are often installed a full 12 inches above the regular lockset. With a pen or pencil, mark the spot on the door where you’ll install the lock. Place and outline the template for the lock in that position.

Step 3 – Prepare the DoorTake your drill and drill a hole through the door to make room for the cylinder of the dead bolt. Then look at the skinny side of the door and note where the bolt will slide through. Carefully drill a hole here as well. Keep the drill level so the hole is even and straight. You may want to use safety goggles to make sure any slivers or wood chips don’t inadvertently strike you.

Step 4 – Install the DeadlockPosition the bolt into the hole that you drilled in the door and use a flathead or Phillips screwdriver to securely screw it into place. Then, working from the outside of the lock to the inside, install the cylinder component of the deadlock. Screw the parts of the lock together and test the bolt to make sure it slides effortlessly (but securely) in and out of place. Finally screw the strike plate into place over the locking mechanism.

And that’s it! Now your building has that added security you want all thanks to you!

Hey Mrs. Fixit,I have a question. After flushing the toilet water continues to fill the bowl area from the tank. What can I do stop this constant flow of water in the toilet? Thanks for your reply. – Mingy

Dear Mingy,Your problem is a very common one. Normally it is an issue with the rubber stopper in the tank. Sometimes the chain that it is connected to is stuck on something and is not allowing it to properly plug the hole. If that doesn’t work your best bet would be to replace the rubber flapper, which may be worn due to age and does not seal properly. Such rubber flappers are available at Brothers Habet for less than $10.00. Good luck! - Mrs. Fixit

To Mrs. Fixit,I am currently building a new home and want to paint my house Capricorn blue, but my husband says it wouldn’t last very long. Is this true? Does the color of the paint affect its longevity? Thanks in advance. - Liz

Hey Liz,Unfortunately for you your husband is right. Very bright colors like Capricorn blue contain more pigments within them. This causes them to fade more quickly than plainer colors that contain fewer pigments. A good exterior paint should last you five years with proper maintenance such as pressure washing to remove dirt. However if you use a product like Penta Weathershield it can last up to ten years with maintenance and only for an additional $15.00 a gallon. What a deal, huh? Hope you find another color of your dreams. - Mrs. FixIt
