Thomas D. O’Malley, ’63, former Chairman of Manhattan College’s Board of Trustees, has provided the largest gift in the Riverdale, NY, college’s history. His $25 million gift is earmarked to provide increased student scholarships and grants, support innovative teaching and research, and enhance and diversify learning opportunities

within Manhattan College’s School of Business. It will now be known as The O’Malley School of Business. Formal dedication will take place in the fall.Mr. O’Malley and his wife, Mary Alice, are the most generous donors in Manhattan College’s history. They provided the leadership gift to build the O’Malley Library on campus, and donated $10 million to help support the construction of the Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons, named after Mr. O’Malley’s classmate and the former New York City Police Commissioner.“Mary Alice and I are pleased to continue our support for Manhattan College. It’s an institution that has remained faithful to its core values. It provides a top quality education in a dynamic and open environment while at the same time maintaining its Catholic identity. A very substantial portion of the student body supports Lasallian traditions of service

to the less fortunate by volunteering in local, national, and international support programs. Manhattan has also continued its historical support of the nation’s military by maintaining a strong ROTC program, and being rated by veterans of our military as a top institution to attend after serving our country.”Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. O’Malley, for your generosity and support of the Christian Brothers and Manhattan College!

Last spring, Mr. Robert Scott announced his retirement, planned for June 2018, with these words: “I joined the St. Joe’s community in 1971, eagerly accepting a position to teach Religion at an institution rich with history and built on the solid foundation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. At that time, I never

could have predicted how many generations of young men I would witness walk across the stage at graduation – individuals who would go on to serve their communities, who would build lives of integrity as true St. Joe’s gentlemen, and who would become my lifelong friends.”He went on to say that his task for his final year would be to set in place policies that would sustain the school’s

Lasallian Mission through keeping St. Joe’s accessible to the future generations of young men by partnering with alumni and benefactors for financial support. Mr. Scott insists that the funding of our academic vision continue to best prepare the students with the skills needed for success in college and the 21st Century. He promotes the need to preserve the respectful, welcoming and faith-filed culture within the walls of St. Joe’s, knowing that our relationships with each other, with our young men and with our loving God are the essence of our community.“Our school is strong, our future is bright and together, we will accomplish great things for the young men of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.”Thank you, Mr. Scott, for your 47 years of service to the Brothers, faculty and students of St. Joe’s, and for providing the very clear pathway for the future success of the school. Congratulations!

In August 2016, we received a Memorial Gift from Mr. and Mrs. Gary J. Gagliano entitled “In Memory of the Forgotten De La Salle Brothers”. They have continued to contribute in this manner, occasionally joined by others. In their January 2018 gift, they included a note stating: “Our fondest wish for the year 2018 is that other contributors take up the challenge presented by this category of giving back to the De La Salle Brothers.”We sought their permission to mention this, and use their names, which was promptly granted, along with a copy of their words of their first such gift: “The Forgotten De La Salle Brothers: the deceased Brothers who, although they gave everything they had --- their lives, their energy, their intellects, their prayers, etc, --- in the service of others, go unremembered by the people they served.” Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Gagliano, for your special thoughtfulness and generosity to us!

From the Mailbag!

“Allow me to say that I am not sure I have ever met a more gifted man. Smart??? He was surely book smart but also people smart. He read many books but he also read people very well. Integrity??? This is what I admired most about Brother Thomas Scanlan. He never wavered from doing what he believed was the right thing to do, even if it was not the

popular thing to do. But through it all, he would listen intently to others’ point of view. But as I am sure you know, this strong man with deep convictions was never easily swayed.” Those are the words spoken by Brother Dennis Lee, Provincial, in his Words of Welcome to Brother Thomas’ Mass of Christian Burial.Brother Thomas graduated from Sacred Heart School in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, near his beloved Yankee Stadium. He entered the Christian Brothers Junior Novitiate for his four years of high school, and then the Novitiate in June 1962. He received a BA in Physics from The Catholic University of America and an MA from New York University in Mathematics. (His PhD is mentioned later.)Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, NJ, was Brother Thomas’s first assignment. He was a teacher for two years, and was appointed Vice Principal, and three years later Principal of the school. After another three years, and noting his many talents, superiors assigned him to study for a PhD at Columbia University, usually a four year period of study. Brother Thomas earned his PhD in three years, completing all course work and dissertation for a Doctorate in Business Administration in that shortened time. He was then assigned to the Provincialate office as Director of Finance and Education for the legacy New York Province. He held this position for three years. In 1981, he was installed as the second Vice Chancellor (President in our system) of Bethlehem University in the Holy Land, which the Christian Brothers co-founded with the Vatican in 1975. Amid political turmoil of the time, Brother Thomas tackled the task of transitioning the University from a “beginning” university to a

“genuine” university, with expanded curriculum, faculty, facilities, and sound business practices, all guided by long range planning. These efforts gave all involved a clear vision of what was to come, and resulted in pragmatic decision-making processes, which led to a harmonious working relationship with the administration, faculty and staff. In 1987, he was chosen to be President of Manhattan College, a position he was to hold for 22 years. In short, Brother Thomas worked the same magic at Manhattan that he did at Bethlehem University. Enrollment soared 120% during his tenure, as new dorms changed the College from a “day hop” college to a residential college, while still preserving its commitment to serving first-generation students. Accreditations were received by the School of Business and the School of Education. A new Library was built, which is truly a state of the art technology center. Existing facilities were renovated and updated. The well maintained campus seems ready for an Open House every day of the week. Brother Thomas himself received numerous academic and professional honors and awards. In spite of a multitude of professional obligations, Brother Thomas was always available to his aging Mother, and in more recent years, during the illness of his younger brother. At the time of merger of the three Christian Brothers provinces in the northeastern United States in 2009, Brother Thomas was appointed one of the Assistant Provincials of the new District of Eastern North America, a position he held for nine years. In the Words of Remembrance, Brother Patrick Horner, Manhattan College, praised Brother Thomas for his “long and varied career as an excellent teacher, a superb educational administrator at both the secondary school and university level, a first-rate manager of Provincial finances, and, in the last several years, an experienced, knowledgeable consultant to the Boards of Trustees of various schools.” St. John Baptist de La Salle mandated that his Brothers exhibit the virtues of Faith and Zeal. Surely God has blessed all the dedicated work that Brother Thomas enthusiastically accomplished for the Christian education of the young. May God grant him unimaginable glory!

After graduating from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in January 1951, Brother Henry Betz entered the Novitiate of the Christian Brothers in March 1951. In those days, some schools in the New York City area held graduations at the end of each semester. After receiving his BA from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, he began 12 years of grammar school teaching. He spent three years as teacher and prefect at La Salle School in Albany, NY, and six years at St. Mary’s School, Yonkers, NY. Brother Henry spent the next three years at St, Bernard School in New York City, where he was also Brothers’ Community Assistant Director.Brother Henry taught at Paramus Catholic High School in Paramus, NJ for one year. He then became the Vice Principal in two high schools over the next 15 years: Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ, for three years and the balance at La Salle Academy in New York City. He remained at La Salle for four years, working in the Development Office. The next assignment was to St. Raymond High School in the Bronx, NY, where he was the Brothers’ Community Director. Returning to Albany, Brother Henry taught for 13 years at Christian Brothers Academy, and again transitioned to Development work for three years. After serving in the schools for 52 years, Brother Henry retired to De La Salle Hall in Lincroft in 2008.At Brother Henry’s Mass of Christian Burial, his nephew, Michael Freedman, credited him with activating his dormant Catholic Faith, and mentioned how proud he is to be a responsible member of his parish. Michael also stated: “As I thought about everything Brother Henry has done in his life, it all became very clear. His life was a life of loving service. He spent his entire life in service to others……… He joined the Brothers at 18 years old, and spent almost 67 years helping others. The Brothers were his family; they were present comforting him at the time of his passing, for which my family is extremely grateful.”God has certainly rewarded Brother Henry with everlasting happiness!

Brother Henry Betz, FSC1933 - 2017

66 Years as aBrother of the Christian Schools

Brother Peter Lagonowicz, FSC1930 - 2018

69 Years as aBrother of the Christian Schools

Brother Peter Lagonowicz grew up in a bilingual family, and was proud to be a first generation Polish American. He was the fifth of five children. His three sisters spoke English at home, while Brother Peter and his older brother and parents conversed in Polish. He retained fluency in Polish conversing with alumni, parents

and an occasional student. Members of the clergy with Polish names were a target for Brother Peter to sharpen his language skills! He quickly embraced the computer as a means of keeping in contact with relatives and news of Poland. He often researched items of Polish history or traditions. He sought to be knowledgeable of topics of Theological news, again thankful for the benefit of the computer. Latin was his academic specialty, and English classes were alive with references to the derivation of words from Latin. His assignments included the customary grammar school, junior high and high school teaching. He taught at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, NY, for eight years, and became its Vice Principal for three years. From 1974 to 1978, Brother Peter held a newly created position for a Brother: Director of the Brothers’ Retirement Residence, at a recently purchased home in Garrison, NY. Unfortunately, this three story house was not ideal for older occupants, and this, fortunately, led to the planning and construction in 1979 of the ground level De La Salle Hall, the present Retirement Community in Lincroft, NJ. Brother Peter’s suggestions were welcomed by that committee. At age 65 in 1995, Brother Peter began an 11 year assignment to Poland, serving as a teacher, and at times Director, of young Brothers in the Polish Novitiate and Scholasticate Communities in Czestochowa, Lublin, and Kamyk, Poland. In 2006, he was in residence at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, and volunteered as a Library assistant. He also prepared readers for the school’s daily early morning Mass, and offered Gospel Sharing sessions for interested students. Brother Peter honored his vocation and his roots. May God bless his soul abundantly!

There will be changes coming in future issues of the Lasallian Notes. The next issue will come to you unfolded as in a magazine style. It will not be placed in an envelope. Some minor refreshment of the graphics may affect the appearance of the issue, but it will still be headlined Lasallian Notes. The contents will remain “typical” as to what you are accustomed.

You will receive the Spring issue of Lasallian Notes in early June. Mark your calendar!

LASALLIAN NOTES

Novitiate Begins for Five Novices

Shown are Brother Dylan Perry, Brother Paul Avvento, Brother Mark Engelmeyer,

Brother Matthew Kotek and Brother Stephen Barbaro. Please pray for our Novices, and

for all young men and women considering God’s special call.

Our Regional Novitiate is located in Chicago’s Hyde Park-Kenwood

neighborhood in order to take advantage of the theological and ministerial

resources of the area. The Novitiate Program consists of religious studies, the rules and tradi-

tions of St. La Salle and the Brothers, and offers ample time for personal

re ection. At the conclusion of the Novitiate, the Novices make their rst

religious vows. Today’s Novices are not new to the Brothers’ life. They

are adult men ranging in age from the mid-20’s and beyond who have had

several years of experience in community and in educational ministry.

Brother Richard Kestler was among 28 men and women in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to receive Honors from Pope Francis. The Honors were conferred by Archbishop Charles Chaput, who stated that “Each of the honorees has performed some exceptional service for the Church or offered some form of outstanding Christian witness in a generous and sustained way.”

Brother Richard has dedicated many years as a classroom teacher at various Catholic schools and Lasallian ministries. He served as President of West Catholic Preparatory High School in Philadelphia from 1999 to 2005, and again from 2012 to 2016, at which time he revitalized the school’s enrollment and program. As a “retiree”, he continues to further Catholic education as a volunteer at West Catholic and La Salle University, and is the Brothers’ Community Director at Anselm Hall on the University’s campus. Congratulations Brother Richard!
