3. The Brooks family in Hardwick/Weedon, Buckinghamshire (section 3).

Nicolas' father John Brooks and his brother William, came from Hardwick/Weedon in Buckinghamshire on the ship "Theresa" in 1847. William had a wife (Elizabeth Taylor) and a daughter Sarah – Elizabeth’s parents & family were also on the ship. John & William’s father William Brooks (1785-1827) died in 1827 (as did their brother Thomas Brooks (1824-1827) leaving their mother Ann Seney Brooks a widow with 2 children, John 9 & William 7 years old. Ann Seney Brooks had a close relative (some say sister, but others a cousin) Elizabeth Seney who had married a William Burrell (1791-1867) of Hardwick/Weedon, but Elizabeth died. Ann Seney married William Burrell on 13 Nov 1828, and had 3 more children, Matthew, Emily & Betty.

4. The transcription of the actual diary. (see appendix A14).

In Aug 2017 a photocopy of the actual diary of John Brooks' voyage on the Theresa in 1847 was posted to the authors by David Brooks, son of Harland Brooks, proving conclusively John & William Brooks came to Adelaide in 1847 from Weedon, Buckinghamshire. William’s wife Elizabeth Taylor’s family also came on that voyage. The diary shows John Brooks as a devout Wesleyan Christian, as every entry in the diary has reference to “the Lord”. John Wesley (1703-1791) was an English cleric, theologian and evangelist who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. The societies he founded became the dominant form of the independent Methodist movement that continues to this day.

5. The Seamons and Brooks family of Hardwick/Weedon (see section 3.3). The Seamons family history is inter-twined with the Brooks family in the late 1700s and there is a detailed history published by a John Leslie Seamons on the web (http://seamons.id.au/ ) site.

6. Brooks of Magill Road in 1847-1860 (see section 3). 1848-1851 William Brooks purchases lots 15 & 17 pt section 301 for £49/19/6. (ots11/356, 66/142) 1853 William sells 50% interest to his brother John (and his fiance?) for £24/19/6. (ots30/436) 1853 William buys John's share back.

1853 John Brooks purchases blocks 25 & 26, Section 284, Finchley for £130.00 (ots242/66) Note: The distance between William’s property at Kensington Park and John's Finchley is only 1 mile! 1855 John Brooks marries Elizabeth Richards Trewenack.

James Richard Brooks 1855-1896 m1875 Rebecca/Beatrice Bates (1852-1887) William Brooks had only 4 children, but the extended family extended to 13 grandchildren. The Pulfords seemed to be quite prosperous and also had many descendants. Note: Lydia Brooks (1851-1897) m1878 her sister’s husband brother William Henry Pound (1852-1896).

8. The Richards family of Condurrow (Camborne, Cornwall) 1841-1851 (see section 4.1).

John Brooks married Elizabeth Richards Trewenack in 1855 and her story is a fascinating if not sad one up to then. The details of her family has been proven with DNA testing as several of her siblings had migrated to the Victorian Gold fields, and some of those descendants have been showing up as DNA matched cousins to the authors Neil & John Brooks.

The Richards siblings and where they went, and what DNA matches have been discovered 2020

9. Elizabeth Richards & Henry Trewenack in Condurrow 1851. (see section 4.1)

We have been able to track Henry Trewenack down to Bolenowe Croft, near Condurrow, Camborne, Cornwall as a lodger in the Mayne household.

1851 Census (from the Online Cornwall Census Project) 13,Bolennow Croft, Jane Mayne ,Head,W,,60,Miners Widow Home With Family, Wendron , ,,John Mayne,Son,U,23,,Miner,Camborne ,,Jane Mayne,Dau,U,,19,Mine Girl,Camborne ,,Richard Mayne,Son,U,17,,Miner,Camborne

Close by was a William Richards & wife Mary Ellen, who may have been cousins to Elizabeth Richards of Condurrow, about a mile closer to Camborne, and may have introduced Henry Trewenack to Elizabeth Richards of William & Grace Richard’s family. 10. The above UK census for 1841 (St Mawgans in the Parish of Mawgan of Meneage, near Helston in Cornwall). The census shows the Trewenack family, John Trewenack 80, Potter, while his son William and wife Ann (Johns). William’s brother Henry was a Blacksmith, the Trewenacks were Potters and Blacksmiths in Cornwall. In 1843 William Trewenack, Henry’s father had been transported to Tasmania for “Sheep stealing”.

William Trewenack/Trewennick’s Convict Records from the Tasmanian Library Online

The extended family migrated to Adelaide in 1852 on the ships "Amazon" & "Caucasian".

11. The Trewenacks in South Australia from 1852 onward.

The family settled in Kensington Gardens after 1852 and John Henry Trewenack (who married his 1st cousin Elizabeth Trewenack) established a Pottery, and may have brought with him from Cornwall his father’s (& grandfather’s) pottery tools & equipment. The Bennets took over the pottery in 1887 and it is still in business in Briant Rd Magill. Henry & Elizabeth Richards Trewenack probably stayed close to Henry’s brother (John Henry) who started up a pottery business in Corryton/Magill. They had a daughter Julia Ann. Henry Trewenack was a “Sawyer” & “Miner” (as per wedding certificate, 1851 census & his daughter’s death certificate) and we think he was drawn to the Victorian Goldfields, where we think he died in 1853 leaving Elizabeth & Julia. Unfortunately Julia daughter died a year latter, at 18 months of age, 15 June 1854, of dysentry. Henry’s brother John Henry signed the Death Certificate.

1. John and Elizabeth (Richards Trewenack) Brooks' children – (see sections 5.1 to 5.6) 2. Thomas Brooks (1856-1918) & Emily Austin & Elizabeth Williams 2. Nicolas Richards Brooks (1858-1953) & Fanny Ann Burrows Colwill (1864-1944) 2. Grace Anne Brooks (1861-1921) & Thomas Clayson (1844-1927)

2. Mary Elizabeth Brooks (1863-1864) 2. Elizabeth Mary Brooks (1865-1936) & Thomas Edwin Clayson (1868-1958)

2. William John Brooks (1867-1868) 2. Sarah Jane (1870-1912) & Alexander Badman (1865-1951) 13. Thomas Brooks (1856-1918), Emily Austin (1856-85) & Elizabeth Williams (1861-1906)

Thomas, the eldest of John and Elizabeth Brooks, was raised in the cottage (pictured above left) on the corner of Third St and South St (now Shakespeare Av). In 1877 Thomas purchased lot 17 Finchley, on the corner of Second St & South St (now Shakespeare Av). He and his brother were masons (builders) and after his father died on 7th January 1880, Thomas subdivided his lot 17, selling the western half to the Colwills on 18th January, and by the 9th August he had arranged a mortgage on the eastern half of lot 17 which usually means he then had funds to build a house. On 20th Sept, Thomas married Emily Austin. Emily and Thomas had 2 children, Hilda and Wenzel, but Emily died in 1885 leaving Thomas with Hilda 4 yo and Wenzel only 12 months old. Thomas' mother, Elizabeth was widowed but had her 2 daughters (Elizabeth Mary & Sarah Jane) still at home, would have been 55 years old and may have helped with the children in her cottage (lots 25 & 26 Finchley). Two years later in 1887, Thomas married Elizabeth Ann Williams, and had 2 more children Gwennie and Gordon, but sadly Gwennie died when she was 9 years old. In about 1900 Thomas’ mother Elizabeth handed over her land and cottage, lot 26 and southern half of lot 25, for "natural love and affection". The northern half of allotment 25 was given to her second son, Nicolas, who would not build on it until 1924. Thomas had been a builder for many years, and after his mother died in 1903, built a very impressive Villa which he named "Wandeen". Thomas's 19 yo son Wenzel and 18 yo nephew Leonard John Brooks were both carpenters, and we would like to assume, would have been involved in the project. Thomas had been elected a Campbelltown Councillor in 1899 and was involved until 1914. In 1918 Thomas died only 62yo and left his property "Wandeen" to his eldest daughter Hilda. Thomas’ son Wenzel was living in Jervois street in a house owned by Wenzel’s wife who had inherited that and other properties from her parents. Wenzel inherited a piece of vacant land on Magill Road from his father Thomas. Hilda and Wenzel, whose mother was Emily (Austin) Brooks.

Wenzel was a carpenter initially but by 1939 he was listed as a tram driver

1918 Thomas Brooks dies. See the appendice A4.3 for the full transcription of Thomas' Will. 1920 Hilda officially inherits "Wandeen", probably maintained by her brother Wenzel, who was a carpenter living in Jervois St Murray Park.

Thomas Brooks's house he called "Wandeen", corner of Third St and Shakespeare Av Magill.

1924 Nicolas Richards Brooks builds a home on the northern half of lot 25 on Third Ave. 1957 Hilda sold the northern pt lot 26 to Robert Harold Clisby (builder). I suspect he is a nephew of Annie Lavinia Brooks' husband, William Redmond Clisby. 1960 Hilda Grace Brooks died a spinster. 1961 Wenzel as executor of Hilda's estate, sold the remainder of the land and "Wandeen", to Aged Cottage Homes Incorporated, and "Wandeen" was demolished.

15. Frederick Gordon Brooks (1890-1924) & Vera Gladys Cocks (1893-1978) (see section 5.6) 1. Frederick Gordon Brooks. married Vera Gladys Cocks, (1893-1978)

The only son of Thomas Brooks with his second wife Elizabeth Ann Williams Brooks, married (as Gordon Frederick) Gladys Vera Cocks (born as Vera Gladys) on 26th Nov 1913 at the Christian Chapel Grote Street. Her father was William Nicholas Cocks. 1918 Gordon and his father Thomas Brooks owned Brooks & Brooks Motor Works Pt Pirie which is situated on Ellen St (the main street of Pt Pirie), presumably around the corner from the Motor & Cycle works on Alexander St.

This photo is not of Gordon, but the Harley Davidson pictured was made around 1916

Harland Gordon Brooks (1920-1985) was an R.A.A.F. Officer before joining the Department of Immigration in 1950, where he held various senior positions. In 1969 he was awarded an A.N.U. Fellowship to undertake a research into Australia's post war immigration planning programmes relating to non- British European Assisted Migration. He returned to the Department of Immigration, as a Special Project Officer and remained there until his retirement in 1978. From David Brooks, Nov 2017- After the war, upon moving to Canberra, he did an Accountancy qualification at Canberra University College branch then at the University of Melbourne, graduating 1952?. Before that (after the war) he must have matriculated by going to night school somewhere , since he didn’t even finish high school first time around, left school at 14 (1934) to earn money for the family (a “counter jumper” he called himself, at Harris Scarfe’s men’s clothing store, but what primary and secondary schools he attended in Adelaide I just don’t know. David Brooks’ email of August 2017

My father Harland's (he hated the name; the only person to use it was his sister Dawn, to torment him) marriage to Joan Hale lasted only until 1951. Annulled in time for him to marry my mother, Norma Margaret Jeffery (1923-71) and produce me in 1953. After Norma's death he married again, this time an Elizabeth Turner, for whom I have no dates: we don't speak. But I don't see that you follow any lines up this far. FYI I am a writer - poet, novelist, short story writer, essayist. I taught Australian Literature at various Oz universities from 1981 until 2013 (rtd to write full time). Mainly the University of Sydney, 1991-2013. Married twice, to Alison Summers, 1975-83, and to Teja Pribac, 2005-, with a twenty-year de facto relationship between, with Nicolette Stasko, a relationship which produced my sole (known) offspring, Jessica Brooks, in 1985. She and her partner made me a grandfather in 2014. 16. Nicolas Richards Brooks (1858-1953) & Fanny Ann Colwill (1864-1944) (see sction5.7)

1858 Nicolas Richards Brooks was born at Finchley. He lived within 200 metres around the Finchley/Magill area all his life.

In Clara Brooks' trunk we found Nicolas' certificate of apprenticeship as a mason dated 1877.

The document reads:- Uneley May 21st 1877 I the undersigned do hereby agree to enter Nicolas Richard Brooks as an apprentice to the Masoniry and do all that is in my power to teach the said Nicolas Brooks the trade of Masoniry and to pay to the above named the sum of six shillings per day for every days work done by him for the term of six months commencing May the 21st 1877 and ending November the 21st 1877. signed G(eorge) Foreman, Builder, Uneley

1877 Nicolas’ brother Thomas, also a mason purchased lot 17 Finchley on the corner of South St (Shakespeare Ave) and Second St. 1880 was a very eventful year! 1880 2nd Jan Nicolas & Thomas’ father, John Brooks died aged 60 (dementia related). 1880 18th Jan Thomas sold the western half his lot 17, Second St, to Richard Colwill, who had arrived from the UK in 1878 with his family. (The Colwills’ life is documented nicely by the 1871 UK Census, where the Colwills and the Burrows lived in the Clovelly and Hartland districts in North Devon. see chapter 7.1.Colwills). 1880 May, Richard Colwill raised a mortgage to build a cottage for the large Colwill family (7 children from 1 to 20 years of age). As Thomas Brooks was a mason/builder it is highly likely that Thomas and his brother 22 yo Nicolas Brooks helped build this cottage for the Colwill family of wife Betsy and children. (Richard Colwill’s eldest daughter was 16 year old Fanny Ann Burrows Colwill so you can see how Nicolas and Fanny would be known to each other for at least 3 years.) 1880 9th Aug. Thomas may have built a house on the eastern half of his lot17, Second St as there was a mortgage registered over it, 2nd Sept, Thomas married Emily Austin. (details Section 5.6) 1882 SA Almanac, both Thomas Brooks and Nicolas Richards Brooks were listed as Masons of Finchley. 1883 Nicolas purchased Lot 53 (now #71) Colton Ave Murray Park on 16/8/1883 for £10.00. Nicolas and Fanny Ann Colwill married on 8/10/1883 at the Wesleyan Parsonage Norwood. On 2/11/1883 they were granted a mortgage and they built their first home. The property backed onto South Street (Shakespeare Ave) only a 100 metres from Thomas Brooks' and Richard Colwill's homes, and across the road to his mother's land (lots 25 & 26 Finchley).

This is a 2015 photograph of 71 Colton Ave Magill.

Bruce Brooks:- "Nicolas had one job at Mile End, and he walked from Magill to start work at 7 am."

Bruce Brooks:- Nicolas was a freelance stone mason on building of the Adelaide Arcade, which was completed in 1885, Nicolas in an interview said:- "Start at each end and meet half way or lookout!".

1889 “July 4th Sarah Jane, daughter of the late John Brooks, marries at the residence of Elizabeth Brooks, at Murray Park”. (Nicolas Brooks’ house in Colton Ave Murray Park! – he would have had 3 children in the house eg Mary b1884, Leonard b1885 & Florence b1889) 1895 Fanny Ann Burrows Brooks inherited her father’s property (lot 207), and kept it until 1920 when she transferred it to Mary Jane Colwill, presumedly Arthur Colwill's wife.

Bruce Brooks "Nicolas helped build Auldana wine cellars then became foreman in charge of all outside work in the Auldana vine yards." 1902 SA Almanac Nicolas & Thomas were listed as builders.

1903 Nicolas became "outside manager" for Auldana Winery, so, around 1903 the family moved to the old "Brookside North" house, which Auldana had acquired along with the related vineyard. Allen (1903) and Clara (1906) were born there.

The family lived at “Brookside North” (14 Fourth St Tranmere, sold for about $1m in 2017) , see the Toop & Toop brochure in section 5.7

1926 after Nicolas retirement, he built his house, 100 metres east, on “pt lot 25, Finchley” in Third Street which after Nicolas’s death passed to his youngest daughter Clara in 1953, who had stayed single and looked after her aged parents until their death (1944 & 1953).

17.1. Mary Winifred Brooks (1884-1970) & Thomas Edwin Smith (section 6.1).

Mary Winifred Brooks (often known as Nin) was the eldest daughter of Nicolas and Fanny Brooks, and she was born in 1884 in the (now #71) Colton Ave Murray Park cottage that Nicolas had built in 1883-1884.

1908 She married Thomas Edwin Smith II and they lived in various houses near Firle. 1912 purchased lot 64 Gardiner St Newstead (now St Morris), then in 1917 sold it. 1918, they moved into a new house at Gurrs Road, Kensington Park. (Note: Mary’s younger brother Stanley was later to buy allot 43, backing onto the Smith’s block.) Their son Raymond Thomas & Jack Edwin were very successful in education, having both been educated at Kings College and the University of Adelaide. Raymond & Jack collaborated on Chemistry & Physics text books which were to be standard text for secondary schools in South Australia.

Leonard was the authors’ grandfather and was a carpenter all his life. After he married Susan Mildred Scott in 1912, they purchased land at Firle, and built a bungalow house, which they lived in all their lives. The 3 sons were very good at sport, with Douglas playing cricket with Donald Bradman, Leonard (Peter) being a good footballer, cricketer and cross country runner. The youngest son Allen played football and cricket, but the brothers lives were changed forever when World War 2 broke out and they enlisted. Douglas went into the Medical Corps in pharmacy, Allen also went into the medical Corps (dentistry technician), but Leonard (Peter) was a prisoner of war in the dreaded Changi jail in Singapore where he survived but at great expense to his health.

17.3. Florence Irene Brooks (1889-1970) & Edward Redmond Jennings (1881-1955) Florence married a widower Edward Jennings who had 6 children ranging from 5 to 16 years of age. Edward was in the Tailoring business, and they purchased a house in Birkinshaw Ave Tranmere, very close to some of her siblings and her parents at Finchley. We could not find anything really interesting in her life. She did not have any children of her own. 17.4. Emily Alberta Brooks (1891-1973) & Robert Goyder Thomson (1889-1952)

Emily is a very interesting person, as she basically eloped with her beau, Robert Goyder Thomson, a Railways employee. Judy (Thomson) Gregory wrote in 2015:- "Now to Nanna Emily and "Harry" Robert Goyder. Nanna always told me she met Harry when he was either the conductor or driver (can’t remember which) on a tram that she took to work (on Magill line I think). She said he always called her "peaches and cream" - "chatting her up" they would call it these days. Nanna Emily didn't tell me, but my cousin Merilyn (Betty's daughter) told me many years ago, that Nanna and Harry ran away and got married, thus making Nanna Emily "persona non grata" with the Brooks family for quite a few years I think. Robert was the only child of Robert Vincent Thomson, a drover of the Birdsville to Maree (Birdsville track). Robert Goyder was born at Goyders Lagoon, hence his middle name.

Goyders Lagoon Station is probably still part of Clifton Hills Station, lying on the edge of Goyders Lagoon.

His father also became the Owner/Proprietor of the Birdsville Hotel Qld, and even owned a race horse “Micawber” which won the Birsdville Cup in 1888. Unfortunately Robert Vincent died in 1893, and his wife and 4 year old child Robert Goyder lived in a maisonette at Beulah Park. More misfortune came to Robert Goyder as when he was cutting across the rail yards after a shift, his foot got caught in switch gear and a shunting train severed his leg just below the knee. Emily & Robert brought up their five children at his mother’s home, and he inherited it after she died, and Emily inherited it after Robert Goyder died at 63 yo. 17.5. Clisbys, Annie, Ruth and Dorothy.

1894 Annie Lavinia (Brooks) Clisby was born on 6 May in the little cottage of her parents Nicolas and Fanny Brooks at (now #71) Colton Avenue, Magill. She was the fifth child in a family of nine. Annie commenced Sunday School at the age of five, her first teacher being Mrs. Uren and then Miss Potter who later became Mrs. Seppy Lillywhite. Annie later became Leader of the Kindergarten and thus began a life of service to the Church. Her school days were spent at Magill and Wellington Road Primary School. 1930 Annie married William Redford Clisby, known as Rett. He was a widower with three children, Ruby May, Dorothy Violet and Redford Winthorpe. He was the son of William Clisby and Emma Brenton with 5 brothers & sisters. Rett had married Ruby Roberts in 1919, but Ruby died in 1927 in child birth of their son Redford (1927-1952) at their Murray Park home. 1931 After a short time at Rosslyn Park the family shifted to a dairy farm at Woodside. 1932 Annie's daughter Ruth was born. 17.6. A short Biography of Stan Brooks by Brian & Barbara Headland 2015 Together with his eight siblings, Stan was brought up in the family home at Magill. They all attended the Primary School at Wellington Road, a walk of about 4 kms each way. After school he completed an apprenticeship in

carpentry, and worked for several years in that trade. Unfortunately at age 27, he had a serious accident at work damaging his leg badly, and was uanable to continue in that trade. He then obtained employment as a timber salesman with Reid Timber Merchants, and remained with that firm until his retirement. He became proficient as a draftsman/estimator for timber requirements for a wide range of buildings. During WW1 he was rejected for Army Service on medical grounds (eyesight) but served in the local Home Guard and was promoted to the office of lieutenant. Stan married VernerVeitch in 1923 and they moved into their home at 15 Birnie Ave, Kensington Park, where they remained until their death.

Verner had come from a farming property in Balaklava to follow her scholarship for singing in Adelaide. They had three children while living there, Kath, Geoff and Barbara. Stan also was a good tenor voice, and music was a central interest in family and social life. Verner was also a competent pianist. Stan enjoyed gardening, especially flower growing, specialising in dahlias and gladiolis. At one stage part of the dividing fence with the (back) neighbour (sister Winnifred Brooks Smith?) was removed so that both families could extend their gardening interests. The family were members of the Newstead Methodist Church (now St. Morris Church) and were all involved in the variety of the church life. Stan was closely involved in the design and building of a new church on site in the 1960s. Stan was of a quiet and retiring nature, but strongly committed to his family and to his Christian faith. Both attitudes were found in his generosity, good humour and high standards of integrity in his daily life. Geoffrey William Brooks died of Heart Attack on the way home from work.

Andrew & Debbie went to live in Adelaide with their 2 babies, Rhiannon 6 months and Nerida 18 months. Lachlan was born in Adelaide. Andrew finished his PhD and 6 months later they went to Washington DC USA but actually lived in Maryland for 5 years. Then they came home, much to my relief. 17.7. Although Finchley was laid out on either side of Central Avenue into 32 2.5 acre allotments, these were bought mainly in 10 acre blocks and used for such purposes as grazing horses, running cows, growing olives and vines, and into recent memory, acting as a football ground for the Magill Royals. When Ernest Brooks bought into a re-subdivision of Finchley in 1924, he paid 8s 6d a foot or £22.10s per allotment of 50 x 140 feet, and it was only then that a suburb began to grow. Brian John Brooks was born on the 7th August 1929 in Maylands South Australia, the second of three children of Ern and Sylvia Brooks of Magill, South Australia. His two sisters are Aileen and Rosemary. Ern, his father, was a fitter and turner by trade and worked for the FW Hercus Manufacturing Co Limited, a small family owned company in Thebarton that made machine tools. Sylvia, his mother, had trained at business college as a secretary. The family lived at First Street Magill, in a house that Dad’s father (Ern) built in 1925. Dad was a child of the depression. The family was fortunate however that their father Ern, was always employed so that the family had a regular income. My Grandmother was an expert at managing the family finances and stretching the pounds, shillings and pence. At the age of five, Brian attended the Magill Primary School. 17.8. The church family at Magill, where he worshipped all his life, and the wider church, is richer for his life and gifts. There have been few offices not held (by Allen) with strength in the life of the church – church steward, trustee, choir member, Sunday School superintendent and teacher. His ability in accountancy became another resource of the church. For nearly 15 years he was a member of the Memorial Hospital Board and here again his keenness of mind enabled him to contribute to its planning. Most of his working years (after time in the Government Produce Department and Emergency Supply Department) were spent in the Government Tourist Bureau. Responsibility did not spoil the man. The man brought integrity to work and responsibility. He held his place in the work force with a firmness which was characteristic of this man of faith. Music was in him and expressed through his singing – what a gift and how he loved to use it. His home and garden meant much to him and he gained much pleasure from them. Constance Matilda Hill 1904-1985 From Bruce Brooks:- Our mother’s side, her family was smaller, but here again the influence was to be significant particularly through our mother’s father. Grandfather Hill was a coach builder who worked for the Holden Company building horse drawn vehicles. He was a highly skilled craftsman and a perfectionist at his work and this was clearly passed on to his grandson David, who as we know, was not only a perfectionist in all that he did but also inherited the manual skills of his grandfather.

She was the youngest of nine children, 22 years younger than the eldest, Mary Winifred Brooks born in 1884. The Fourth St property, known at "Brookside North" was allocated/leased to Nicolas who was a mason/builder and was involved in the building of the Auldana warehouse (see the photo in section 5.7, of the bullocks and cart of grapes, behind the Auldana warehouse) and became their Vineyard Yard manager at Murray Park and Magill.

She then progressed to Norwood High School. (from Wikipedia) Norwood High School first opened in 1910 on Osmond Terrace Norwood as Norwood Boys School. In 1915 it moved to new premises at Lossie Street Kensington Park. For a period the school was named Norwood District High School. In 1962 the school moved to what is now the TNMHS Senior Campus on The Parade.

In 1924 Clara joined the Government Produce Department, situated in Light Square, and she was there for 42 years, retiring in 1966. A fine example of a report (highlighted how interesting her working life would have been), which we assume she typed, is in the Appendices titled:- A6. A Brief History of the South Australian Government Produce Department including a particular reference to the origin and development of the Dept's Pt Lincoln Meat Works.

Bruce Brooks has mentioned in her eulogy:- Being the youngest member of her family of nine, she accepted without question, a special role and special responsibilities. Greatest amongst these was the care of her ageing parents, especially her father and this was a loving task she undertook for many years. Perhaps this was the greatest sacrifice she made in her life. But, I’m sure too, for Auntie Clara, there would have been no thought of the concept of sacrifice. One had the feeling that she just worshipped her parents. Her father Nicolas was a very well known Vineyard manager and was allocated a house in Fourth St, but in 1924, Nicolas retired and applied for a loan to build on the land he was given by his mother in 1903. On 2nd of September 1925, the 67 year old Nicolas had a loan approval for the erection of a property, which initially, was numbered 1 Third St. Finchley Park, but was later numbered house numbers 8 to 14 Third St. Nicolas retired from being the Vineyard Manager of Auldana in 1925 (the first year the SA Almanac did not have Nicolas at Fourth St as a Vine Manager). Clara had amongst her papers a 1925 assessment of the 1 acre of land (Part allotment 25), which valued it at £182.

Clara lived with her parents in their Third Street home, from 1925 to 1943, when Fanny Ann died (80 years old), then Clara looked after Nicolas until his death (95 years old) in 1953. Clara kept a 1951 document in which she paid the balance (£760) of Nicolas's Mortgage to the State Bank and placed a mortgage on the property in her name. Nicolas had also made a will in 1941 for the house and furniture to be left to Clara. In 1955 Clara sold 10 Third St to her sister, Annie Lavinia Clisby, who, in 1957 built a house on it. Annie lived there until 1978. (see Appendices for Annie's Eulogy).

Clara lived at number 8 Third St, after her retirement in 1966, and onto 1988, when she sold it and bought a home unit at West Street Kensington Gardens. Note:- the house was renovated in 2014 and put on the market for $900,000.

18. Burrows/Colwills of Clovelly, Devon, UK, 1871 (see section 7). Fanny's life is documented nicely by the 1871 UK Census, where the Colwills and the Burrows lived in the Clovelly and Hartland districts in North Devon. "CLOVELLY, or Clovelleigh, is a pleasant village and fishing station, occupying a singular and picturesque situation, on the side of a steep rock, adjoining Bideford Bay, about 4 miles E. Hartland, and 11 miles W.S.W. of Bideford. It is one of the most romantic places in Devon, and the houses being built on the precipitous side of the sea cliff, one above the other; the main street ascends in terraces and flights of steps from the beach and pier. Clovelly is celebrated for its herring fishery, besides which large quantities of conger, whiting, hake, pollack, and cod fish are caught in the winter; and turbot, sole, plaice, gurnet and mackerel in summer. Its parish had 950 inhabitants in July, 1841, besides 40 seamen who were then absent; and contains about 42000 acres of land, mostly the property of Sir James Hamlyn Williams, Bart., who is lord of the manor, and has a large and handsome seat, called CLOVELLY COURT, erected about 1780, on the site of the ancient mansion, which was destroyed by fire. The views from the house and grounds are extremely grand; and above the cliffs, to the south-east of the village, are the remains of an entrenchment, called Clovelly Dikes, of a square form, and unknown origin." [W. White. History, Gazeteer, and Directory of Devonshire, 1850] 1871 Fanny was aged 7 and living with her parents at East Dyke farm at Higher Clovelly North Devon. On the day the census was taken it was obvious that she was visiting her Uncle and Aunt, John (aged 47) and Fanny Burrows (aged 44) at his farm Rosedown Mill. The 1871 census had John Burrows, born at Clovelly as a farmer of 26 acres and a miller employing 3 men.

Note: the above is a deciphered version of the actual 1871 UK census page, and maybe inaccurate! Refer to a

photocopy of the actual page later. Fanny Ann’s parents were Betsy and Richard Colwill and had 5 children living with them at East Dyke farm.

East Dyke Farm and Rosedown Mill near Hartland are only a few miles apart, and would have been quite easy for young Fanny Ann to walk between.

An 1890’s map of Finchley, showing the Brooks/Colwills properties

In 1880 shortly after the death of his father John Brooks, the 24 yo Thomas Brooks divided his lot 17 Finchley into 2, the eastern portion Thomas kept and built a home for his new wife.

Richard Colwill purchased the western half of lot 17 in February 1880, and in May 1880 raised a mortgage to build a cottage for the large Colwill family (7 children from 1 to 20 years of age).

As Thomas Brooks was a mason/builder it is highly likely that Thomas and his brother 22 yo Nicolas Brooks helped build this cottage for Richard Colwill, his wife Betsy and children. The 3rd child was 16 yo Fanny Ann Burrows Colwill, who would marry Nicolas Brooks, 3 years later. 1882 Betsy & Richard had another child (Arthur) but in 1884 the first son John Colwill, and in 1885 the second son Richard Burrows Colwill left the nest and married local girls. 1907 Betsy Colwill died and Richard (72yo) remarried that same year, to the widow Fanny Hupfeld, nee Penfold. Fanny Penfold, b1839 Ticehurst, Sussex had married William Zimmerman Hupfeld who lived around Port Gawler and Watchman, near Balaklava. They had ten children between 1859 and 1884, according to the family history database. William Hupfeld died in Balaklava, but with an unconfirmed date. Fanny Hupfeld's father was William Friend Penfold (1806-1884) who we think died at Port Gawler, her mother was Hannah Waghorne (1810-1884). There were many Penfolds in the Port Gawler area in the 1860s. 1907 Richard purchases lots 261-262 Balmoral Av Murray Park (to live with Fanny Hupfeld?) 1910 Richard sold pt lot 17 to Charles Marscham, gardener, who kept it for another 10 years. 1910 March. Lots 261-262 transferred into Fanny Hupfeld/Colwill’s name 1910 March. Richard senior, transferred his land (lots 203-206) to his youngest Arthur. 1911 Richard Colwill senior dies. Leonard William Brooks, a perspective by his sons. Leonard, or Pete or Skeeter to his friends, was born 2/8/1916. He was a private person, and we don't know a lot of his childhood, suffice to say he thought his parents were a very sadistic lot back then. In his youth he admitted he was "common sense challenged" to put it politely, and evidently one of his favourite tricks was to drive cars through people’s hedges at night. (Try getting away with that these days!). A very good cricketer and footballer and into sports, even when he was married. I can vaguely remember him coming off with blood noses etc when I was really young. Later he joined the Tea Tree Gully Golf Club and often played with his brother Allen, also a member. Two terms come to mind "Destroyer of Golf Clubs (Damned trees!)" and "the 19th hole took ages to play."

Pete joined the Army 21/1/1941 service #sx11060 at Wayville discharged 10/1/1946 and was a prisoner of war in Singapore's Changi where the prisoners were treated inhumanely, but he survived, at great expense to his health.

After Allen and Laurel married in 1945, they lived at Leonard and Susan’s house in Gwynne St Firle, until they were able to build a house at 5 Lanark St, Rosslyn Park. There, they raised two sons and just after (5 weeks) the birth of their first daughter, Elizabeth, moved to Mt Gambier as a

result of Allen accepting a promotion with his employer, Mercantile Mutual Insurance Company. It was hard for Laurel to have to sell their Rosslyn Park home and to move away from her mother and favourite siblings: her life was much lonelier at Mt Gambier, especially as Allen’s work involved mixing with the clients and potential clients at the Cricket Club or Golf Club, where he was an enthusiastic playing member.

Susan Mildred Scott was born on 6th January1889 at Kensington, the 5th child of eight, to John Frederick Scott 1856-1924, a “commercial traveller” and Emily Eliza Brooke 1859-1942. Susan married Leonard John Brooks 1885-1974 on 20th April 1912 at the Baptist Church, Norwood.

They lived at Orient Road Corryton (now Kensington Park), and had 3 children Douglas Richards, Leonard (Peter) William and Allen Brooks. Allen Brooks is the father of the authors, John & Neil Brooks. Susan Mildred Scott’s grandfather, was a Dr James Edmund Scott. James Edmund Scott is a name given to many of the Scotts’ ancestors, so it may have been of particular significance in history. An exciting find was an article about Annegrove Abbey of Ireland, which was purchased by a Captain Scott of King William II’s (of Orange) army after the battle of the Boyne in 1690. The Scotts of Buccleuch were a very wealthy titled Scottish family and in 1661 Anne Scott inherited the wealth and titles of countess of Buccleuch, and was betrothed to Charles II of England’s 1st illegitimate son James. (See section 4. Scotts of Buccleuch from 1600-1750.) James who had no surname, adopted the surname of Scott, and James Scott, Duke of Monmouth was created. We haven’t completely traced who were the parents of Captain James Scott of Annegrove Abbey Ireland, but it was an exciting start. The Scotts of Annegrove Abbey’s feature in great detail in an internet summary of “great houses of Ireland” and in particular a reference by Elizabeth Rosetta Scott Glover in her 1923 book, that they were descended from the Duke of Buccleuch of Scotland. In October 2017 another ancestry website reference to Dr James Edmund Scott was found, research by Susanne Argus Lawson where she had traced Dr James’ wife Sarah Scott to Parramatta NSW via her death certificate which stated she was born Sarah Scott, a cousin of Dr James Edmund Scott.

228 Napier St Fitzroy/Collingwood Vic

His youngest was John Frederick Scott, born in Chelmsford UK in 1856 and the family immigrated to Melbourne very soon after. We have no idea of his education or upbringing, but his death certificate stated he was a “Commercial Traveller”, living at Cleve St Norwood. He married Emily Eliza Brooke, the 20yo daughter of Samuel Brooke and Mary Ann Soper, (of Gouger St Adelaide) at St Michael Mitcham on Sept 5th 1879. Samuel Brooke, b1833 arrived in SA in 1848, was the son of William Brooke & Harriett Sewell of London UK. John Frederick and Emily Eliza Brooke had 8 children, the 5th being Susan Mildred Scott, while at York Street Kensington, all the children born in either Kensington or North Adelaide SA between 1880 and 1890.

John Frederick Scott died in 1924, aged 68 years with his residence listed as Hughes St Mile End. His wife Emily Eliza (Brooke) Scott lived until 1942, aged 83yo. Her address then was her daughter’s (Constance Singyard) address 18 Gwynne St, Firle. Several of her children lived nearby (Susan at 15 Gwynne St (opp. #18), and Allen Scott at Bakewell St).

James Edmund Scott (From Ancestry.com we have transcribed a post by susannel147) According to his death certificate James Edmund Scott was born in Devonshire about 1813 and his parents were James Scott and Susan Butler. (This name continues through the family, his daughter was Susan Butler Scott, granddaughter was Susan Butler Mattingley, also according to his death certificate he married about 1840 to Sarah nee Scott in Queens County Ireland and he was a Surgeon. I have him listed as a Medical Practitioner in Melbourne prior to his death in 1863. He came to Australia as a Surgeon on the ship Hebe in 1857, and as his children were married they listed the birthplaces on their marriage Certificates. The first 2 were born in Queens County New York, the others alternated between England and Ireland. I found his marriage in Mountrath in Ireland in 1840 which listed James Edmund Scott of Ancaster Canada and Sarah Scott of Mountrath, married Witnesses were John Scott, Sarah Scott and Matthew Butler Scott. (there is that name Butler again). I also found him and Sarah listed on the Passenger List for the maiden voyage of the ship “President” in 1840 from Liverpool to New York. This ship was one of the first Steam Ships to travel regularly from England to the USA, unfortunately the next year it was lost at sea and no sight or sound was heard of it again, (they believe it hit an iceberg). I then found them in the 1850 US census in Chester County Pennsylvania. He was listed as Medical Doctor and their youngest child aged 2 months was listed as born in England. I think James worked as a ships Surgeon back and forth between England and the USA taking his family with him.

His last trip was to Melbourne where he settled in 1857 and died in 1863 (only 50yo). I have now found the death of his wife Sarah. She moved to Paramatta N.S.W. to stay with her eldest daughter Susan Butler Granger where she died in 1899. On her death certificate was listed she was born in Dublin Ireland, married in Mountrath Ireland in 1840 aged 27 to James Edmund Scott (cousin)

and her children are listed as Suisan B 55 years, Emma E 46 years, Marion H 40 years & John F 38 years, 1 male and 2 females deceased. Her father is listed as George Bradshaw Scott, Muster Master General of Dublin Castle and her mother’s maiden name as Handcock.
