Forensic Education and Forensic Education and Training RequirementsTraining RequirementsHigh school students interested in a forensic science career should

take several courses in mathematics, computers, earth sciences, biology, and chemistry.

A considerable amount of colleges offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in forensic science. A bachelor's degree with a major in forensic, natural, or physical science from an accredited college prepares job seekers for work in a crime laboratory. However, most employers prefer applicants with a master's or doctoral degree.

Crime laboratories usually offer initial on-the-job training before joining the work force. Also,computer skills are becoming increasingly more important as databases are used for retrieval of information on drugs and other substances.

Forensic TasksForensic Tasks• Analyze drugs and poisons in human tissue and body fluids.

• Examine and compare materials such as fibers, oils, plastics, glass, metals, soils and gunshot residues.

• Examine items of human and animal biological material.

• Conduct botanical identification of plant materials.

• Conduct document examinations, both physical (e.g. handwriting) and chemical (e.g. analysis of inks and papers).

• Examine crime scenes.

• Identify firearms and ammunition (forensic ballistics).

• Detect, enhance, recover and identify latent fingerprints, footprints, tool marks, shoe marks, tire marks and tracks.

• Examine fire and explosion scenes

• Increase the clarity of and analyze audio recordings.

Forensic Job OutlookForensic Job Outlook

Job opportunities for forensic scientists are expected to grow by more than 30%. This increase is likely to happen at least by the year 2016. The usual salary for a forensic scientist is between $40,000 and $74,000 a year, depending on experience. Forensic scientists employed by federal agencies typically earn higher salaries than those employed by state and local agencies.

Nowhere To RunNowhere To Run

Nowhere To Run was a workshop held at Belmont University on October 24, 2008. We spent the day studying the impact of pollution on animal behavior by conducting several experiments. One of which can be viewed on the following page.

• In the experiment we observed the impact of a changing environment on pillbugs and mealworms. Cell 1 represented an environment affected by acid rain, cell 2 had fertilizer and detergents, and cell 3 was similar to deforestation.

• After observing for several minutes, we recorded the results to which cell the insects seemed to gravitate to the most. After averaging all cells, we found that cell 3 was most popular.

Teen Court: Mock CasesTeen Court: Mock Cases• Tennessee Teen Court Program is a

non-profit organization that provides scholarships for seniors in the Sumner County Teen Court Program.

• In the program we acted out real cases and took on roles of the jury, the prosecution, and the defendant.
