A Letter from the Senior Center Director

Hello Friends,

Hurray for Summer! We have some exciting fun coming up and we hope you can come and be a

part of the happenings! Lets enjoy the nice weather and get out and smell the roses!

A big shout out and thanks to all those that made our annual Women’s Tea in May a wonderful

event! Thanks to all the volunteers for their hard work and dedication to this event and all the many other

events! Our cook Kari out did herself with a wonderful meal. A big thanks also to Liz Pencak from the

Village at Marymount who provided the piano music and had hats for all the ladies and thanks to Jen and

Phyllis from Dress Barn and our volunteer models Sandy and Gerri for the lovely fashion show. See some

of the photos below.

Our Lolly the Trolley Trip through downtown, University Circle, Lakeview Cemetery and ending

with lunch in Little Italy was such a fun day and great learning experience! It was awesome to see all the

new constructions of office buildings and residential buildings in Ohio City, Downtown and Midtown /

University Circle area of Cleveland! Things have really changed over the years!

At the time of this letter we have not yet had our Spring Fling Dance on June 26th with Music by

Al Battestelli. I am hopeful that it will be a great dance. Our next dance will be an “Ice Cream Social” on

Monday, July 24th. / 1-3 pm. Price is only $6.00 and includes music by The Wayne Tomsic Combo and

Ice Cream! Who doesn't love Ice Cream!.

We will also be having a Picnic in the Park at our Memorial Park “Grand Pavilion” on Thursday,

August 17th! We have kept the cost down to $3.50 to encourage you to come out for some good eats and

games! Invite a friend or two to come with you and see for themselves how much fun we have. We will

have corn hole game available for any one that wants to play a game or two.

Lastly please check out the new “Hope Garden” directly in front of the Senior / Community Cen-

ter. It is being put in by our local Brooklyn Girl Scout Troop. They will finish it on Saturday June 17th.

They have worked so hard planting flowers and painting stones to represent hope in a way to encourage

people to sit and reflect there. I will have pictures and a story in the next Chit Chat.

It’s an honor to serve you! Please stop by and say hello this summer!

Karen Fratto

Senior Tips to Beat the Heat This Summer

1. Drink Plenty of Liquids Dehydration is the root of many heat

related health problems. Drink plenty of water or juice, even if you're not thirsty. But remember to avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks, as they can actually contribute to dehydration.

2. Wear Appropriate Clothes An old Swedish saying says,

"There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." When it's hot out, wear light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes and a wide-brimmed hat.

3. Stay Indoors During Mid-day Hours During periods of ex-

treme heat, the best time to run errands or be outdoors is before 10am or after 6pm, when the temperature tends to be cooler.

4. Take it Easy Avoid exercise and strenuous activity, particu-

larly outdoors, when it's very hot out.

5. Watch the Heat Index When there's a lot of moisture in their

air (high humidity), the body's ability to cool itself through sweating is impaired. The heat index factors humidity and temperature to approximate how the how the weather really feels. The current heat index can be found on all popular weather websites, and is also usually announced on local TV and radio weather reports during periods of warm weather.

6 Seek Air-conditioned Environments Seniors whose houses aren't air-conditioned should consider finding an air-conditioned place to spend time during extreme heat. The mall, library or movie theater are all popular options. During heat waves, many cities also set up "cooling centers," air-conditioned public places, for seniors and other vulnerable populations. Seniors without convenient ac-cess to any air-conditioned place might consider a cool bath or shower.

REMEMBER OUR SENIOR CENTER IS AIR CONDITIONED AND A GREAT PLACE TO ESCAPE THE HEAT. Come hang out with us on those Hot Summer Days!

7. Know the Warning Signs of Heat-related Illness Dizziness,

nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, fainting and breath-

ing problems are all warning signs that help should be sought im-

mediately”

and therefore would fall under the jurisdiction of the State of Ohio EPA for development review and approval. If so, the City would work with the State and not the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to seek an acceptable develop-

ment plan for this property. The CIC property had a market value of $425,000. It is recommended that a new envi-

ronmental study be undertaken by Davey Resource Group with a topographical survey to document these assump-tions to the USACE. The cost of the total study including, the topographical study, would be $37,240.00. The contract

includes an additional $3,960.00 for shrub and bush removal for the topographical study. The contractor may reduce the fee if conditions in the field allow for less clearing. The final work required will be contingent upon the weather.

Enjoy Some Delicious Summer Fruit

Great taste isn’t the only benefit of summer’s bounty of

berries and other fruits. For example, studies show that

eating fruit helps keep cholesterol and blood pressure in

check which is key to reducing the risk of heart dis-
