From The Director …
Time is definitely relative: at around this time of year, our examination candidates always
look a bit stunned that the time they thought they had before those papers start has all
but evaporated, while sometimes in life ' the first 100 days' can seem way, way, way too
long...
One of my Kenyan heroes and a Brookhouse Patron, Hon Dr Moody Awori, celebrated
the release of his autobiography last week (entitled Riding on a Tiger), and he was kind
enough to invite me to the launch event. At 90 years young, he spoke eloquently of his
time on the planet, his experiences growing up in a different era in Kenya's history, and
his awareness of the importance of friendships in making life meaningful. Elders, such
as Uncle Moody, can provide our young people with great life lessons - just by sharing
the wisdom of their experience.

WORLD SCHOLAR’S CUP
Congratulations to all the participants on the just concluded World Scholar’s Cup Brookhouse Round event held on 20th -
21st April 2017. The event attracted 12 schools and a total of 180 scholars. 30 Brookhouse students participated in the event
and over the two days they debated motions, participated in Collaborative Writing, and took part in a variety of trivia challenges
in the areas of Science, History, Literature, Art & Music and Social Studies.
Shakinar was selected as one of the top debaters to participate in the debate showcase where she did an exceptional job.
All the Brookhouse students did an outstanding job, earning over 175 medals and a total of nine trophies in the following
categories:
PA-K SILVER & GOLD EXPEDITIONS
The two expeditions at the end of last term served to remind the
participants that attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an
adventure. The Gold participants faced probably the most demanding
challenge of their lives so far; the 4 days of hiking the rugged terrain of Mt.
Kenya and the Abardare Ranges stretched them to unimaginable levels.
Exhaustion, fatigue, low oxygen levels, high altitude, loose scree, rains
and treacherous climbs made it an exercise that most wondered why they
had considered taking up the challenge. The frustrations, however, were
forgotten as soon as they reached the summit and witnessed a
spectacular sunrise. They were full of satisfaction with the realisation that
they had achieved something special that many people would like to have,
but lack opportunity, good attitude or self-drive. The following statement
sums up the reflections of the participants: “I love sticking to my comfort
zone and rarely venture out of the easy life. I can’t believe I made it to the
summit in spite of my fear of heights; I am so proud of what I have
achieved, this is just the beginning!” Leslie Wathika.

Term 3 begins in anticipation of good progress to be made towards having Brookhouse Runda
campus ready for its opening in September 2017. Mrs Lea Gilbert, Headteacher for Runda
Campus, has now arrived from the UK and her first four months will be crucial in ensuring all
faculty matters are in place in readiness for the opening in September. We welcome Lea on board.
One of our priorities last week was to visit the Brookhouse Runda site. With just eighteen weeks
until opening, the building site is a hive of activity. Work on the main building is being undertaken
at a commendable pace and we feel confident that our teaching and administrative facilities will be
completed on time and to a very high standard.

BROOKHOUSE RUNDA OPENING IN SEPTEMBER 2017
Mrs Lea Gilbert Headteacher – Runda Campus
At Brookhouse, we purpose to mould servant leaders. At the end
of last term, students and members of staff were involved in the
selection process for the prefects for the 2017/2018 academic
year. Those interested were asked to apply and successful
students went through an interview session with the Heads of
Sixth Form. I would like to congratulate the following students on
their appointment as school prefects:
Our aim is to give an opportunity to as many students as possible
to serve either in the prefect body or in other leadership roles in
the school. Appointment to these positions will be ongoing and I
wish the Prefects and the House Captains and their deputies all
the best in their new roles.
LANGUAGES TRIP
A group of 52 students from Year 7 - 10 left on 8th April
for the scenic resort of Verbier and La Tsoumaz,
Switzerland for a Language and sports trip. For a full
week, they enthusiastically took part in skiing and
intensive language lessons as well as various fun
activities and a tour of Geneva. The weather was
splendid and the students immersed themselves in the
activities, with some making very rapid progress to
move onto the higher slopes by the third day. All too
soon it was over and the group then split into three with
some travelling to Barcelona, Paris and Munich,
respectively. Here, they were introduced to the lively
culture of the respective countries, and over four days
tried new cuisines and explored the vast cities like
locals. They experienced the busy metro and bus
systems as they visited famous landmarks in all three
cities. The group reconvened on the 21st April in Dubai
and travelled back together. Excellent ambassadors for
the school, many expressed their delight at being able
to take part on the trip that proved to be such an eye-
opening experience. My grateful thanks to the parents
for their support and to the following teachers who
accompanied the students on the trip: Mr Omasire, Mrs
Sanghani, Mr Mutiso, Ms Flanagan and Mr Kiptum.

During the Easter vacation, Mrs Kyalo, Head of Languages led a group of over 50
students and staff to Switzerland, France, Spain and Germany. This cultural
immersion trip forms valuable experiential learning that develops oral and written
foreign language skills. We also hosted the World Scholar’s Cup Regional Competition
in which all our teams and delegates excelled. Many thanks to Mrs Ogweno and her
team for organising this event. The Teacher Professional Development Workshops
were hosted at Brookhouse with delegates from many schools in the East and Central
African region attending. Due to our strong partnership with Cambridge International
Examinations, we look forward to having more opportunities to support our teachers.
Congratulations to all the students who completed the PA-K Gold and Silver

support to our candidates through digital media or face-to-face interactions during the
Easter break. This week, we start our final IGCSE, AS and A-level examinations and I

Welcome back to the final term of this academic year. We have a number of new students and parents joining our community. During the half-term break, a very lucky group of students went off on their Languages Trip. The teachers report that they were well behaved and really enjoyed the activities during the two week period. My thanks to all the teachers and in particular Ms Kyalo for organising this superb trip. We have a number of events this term including the Year 4 & 5 Performance. Inter-house activities started well last week with the Year 5 & 6 Spelling Bee Rounds. We also have the cross-country on Friday starting at 8.15am with the U13's and the General Knowledge Quiz this half-term. Sport focuses on cross-country, netball and rugby and the fixtures begin immediately. Please come and support when you can as the students enjoy having an appreciative audience. You should have received a calendar which indicates the timings for the Open Book Mornings this half-term which many parents have found very useful. Ms Michelle Forsyth, Head of Preparatory School

TERM 3 SPORT This Term’s Sporting Events The main sports for this term will be cross-country followed by rugby for boys and netball for girls. Boys will be expected to have a mouth guard and boots. Mr Martin Milla, Head of Prep Sport
EARLY LEARNING At the beginning of each term, children are always eager to know what topic they will be covering. These topics ignite interest in the children as they get engrossed in their learning. This first half of the term, the topics in Early Learning will be as follows: Year 2 will have their topic on 'Pirates', Year 1 - 'People Who Help Us', Reception – 'Toys' and Stage 2 and 3 - 'Once Upon a Time' and 'Mini Beasts'. Each of these topics end with a theme day where the children have exciting activities that leave a lasting memory in the minds of the children. For instance, the Year 2 will end their topic with a fun-filled theme day, dressing up as pirates and carrying out different activities. I am positive that we will continue to get assistance from parents in supporting our children in carrying out research and preparing for the theme days. Ms Joan Aywaya, Early Learning Leader
RECEPTION TRIP On Tuesday 4
th April, the Reception
Class had the opportunity to visit the Ice Rink at The Panari Sky Centre, as part of our topic for the last half of this term 'Hot and Cold'. The children enjoyed skating on the ice rink. At the beginning some children were skeptical about balancing on the blades as for most of them, it was their first time to skate on ice. They quickly gained confidence and were able to have fun on the ice rink. The beauty of the whole experience was that by the time they were leaving they had a lot to share with their peers about their ice skating adventures. Miss Caroline Muhia, Reception Teacher

The students will participate in a variety of interactive group activities with the main purpose of providing an interactive and exciting forum for our students to use various foreign languages outside the classroom.
The students are expected to be in school by 8.45am and a letter about transport has already been sent home with the students. Mr John Wambeo, Teacher of French
Nothing gets our young ones excited like getting on the Brookhouse School bus and taking a school trip. On Friday 31
st March our Year 1 pupils went out on a
trip to the Bomas of Kenya. This was in relation to our Topic 'Houses and Homes' and the children got the opportunity to learn outside of our classrooms. We got to visit different homesteads of the various Kenyan communities from long ago, looking at what materials they were built with as well as their features. This not only gave our children a memorable day out but also an opportunity to appreciate different cultures as well as a new perspective on history. Miss Elizabeth Karanja & Ms Faith Momanyi, Year 2 Teachers
Link-A-lot On Tuesday 9
th May, Andy Salmon (aka Sir
Linkalot) from Thinkalink will be introducing all the children (Reception to Year 8) and teachers to the world of 'Linking' which is a fun and easy way to remember any fact. The focus will be chiefly SPAG (spelling, punctuation & grammar) with some Maths, though other subjects will be touched upon for the older children as it's also very useful for exams. To find out more you can click on the following 3 minute clip of 10 adorable Year 5 children who could do with a boost when it comes to spelling which perfectly illustrates how children engage with Sir Linkalot and how brilliant linking is for their self-esteem...

EASTER LANGUAGES TRIP - FRANCE During the school holiday, I went with the school on a foreign Languages trip. Everyone started in Switzerland, skiing in the mountains and attending language lessons before the group was split up to go to Paris, Munich and Barcelona. It was amazing and I learnt so much during my time there. Mrs Kyalo and Mr Kiptum took us to many monuments and we got to taste the delicious French food. My favourite part of the trip was visiting the Eiffel Tower with my friends. I improved my French speaking skills because we got to attend French language classes every evening. It was a wonderful trip. Kyla-Tricia Nsabiyumva, 8LN

CLUBS THIS TERM
Club pamphlets came home at the start of term and clubs begin this week. Clubs give an opportunity for children to socialise and enjoy working on various extra-curricular activities with their friends across different year groups. Clubs also help children stay connected, active and focused on acquiring different hobbies and vocational skills. It is therefore advisable that children join a club of their choice so that they are committed to attending all sessions. Please keep encouraging your child to attend the club they have signed up for. Ms Anna Wasonga, Club Coordinator
The Languages Department has organised a French, Spanish and German morning for our Year 7 and 8 students and those from neighbouring schools, to be held on Saturday 6

From the Head of Boarding...
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all boarding students, and hope they had a
restful Easter break. We are particularly delighted to welcome new boarding
students as part of the Mandela House community. The new boarding students have
been assigned mentors who will introduce themselves to parents. Students who
have been at boarding will extend their hand of friendship and support to help the
new students settle well as part of our Brookhouse Boarding family.
Year 11, 12 and 13 begin their final examinations this week. The Boarding House
has arranged for the candidates to have longer study time and assistance from
teachers after school hours. The rest of the students have a structured and
supervised study programme geared towards enhancing their academic progress.
CANDIDATES TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
May I urge parents to inform the boarding office, in good time, of their child’s travel
arrangements once they have completed their Year 13 A-Level examinations so that
we have time to facilitate their travel.
A reminder: students can only be signed out by authorised persons recorded on the
boarding contact list or by persons specifically authorised by parents, in writing. This
communication should be sent to [email protected]
