Confession Essence beyond essence, Nature increate

Framer of the world, I set Thee, Lord, before my face, and I lift up my soul unto Thee.

I worship Thee on my knees, and humble myself under Thy mighty hand.

I stretch forth my hands unto Thee, my soul gaspeth unto Thee as a thirsty land.

I smite on my breast and say with the Publican, God be merciful to me a sinner, the chief of sinners;

to the sinner above the Publican, be merciful as to the Publican.

-Blessed John Henry Newman

Message from Father Pergjini: "They think a murderer's heart would taint. Each simple seed they sow. It is not true! God's kindly earth is kindlier than men know. And the red rose would but blow more red. The white rose whiter blow. Out of his mouth a red, red rose! Out of his heart a white! For who can say by what strange way Christ brings his will to light..." Oscar Wilde. I read this poem, by the famous British writer,

many years ago. It touched me in my youth days. Later in life, as a priest in another parish, I used it on Good Friday, for reflection on the first word of the "Seven Last Words of Christ." The first word is from the Gospel of Saint Luke 23-34. "Father forgive them; for they know not what they do." We are entering the Holy week, the most significant week in our Christian faith and tradition, begging with Palm Sunday, the Passion of the Lord. Monday of the Holy week has become a universal day for confessions, at least three dioceses of New York State. This is a unique opportunity for many faithful people, who wish for a longer, more complete time of soul searching and spiritual house cleaning, through the Mercy of Christ. Tuesday of the holy week is another important day, this one for all the priests of our archdiocese of New York who concelebrate the Chrism Holy Mass with Cardinal Dolan at Saint Patrick Cathedral. On this day, all priests, united with the cardinal renew their vows of priesthood. After the renewal of the vows the oils are blessed by Cardinal Dolan and the auxiliary bishops. The oils are then used by all the parishes in our archdiocese for baptisms, anointing of the sick, confirmation, and ordination to the priesthood. It is a very powerful celebration attended by many parishioners who support and pray for their priests. Holy Thursday continues with the washing of the feet of twelve men, representing the apostles, and the Last Supper of the Lord, which established the sacrament of Holy Communion, and the institution of the priesthood. At the end of the Last Supper there is a procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the repository place, where it is placed for adoration. When we pray before the Blessed Sacrament, it represents the apostles waiting with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane before his betrayal. On Good Friday, we follow a very moving outdoor procession with the Stations of the Cross. The slow and somber walk of the faithful is an excellent moment to enter into the mystery of Jesus' lonely passion, dreadful pain and suffering, and weak though he was, his determination to see it through to the bitter end. It is here that you and I pause for a moment in deep prayer before Christ on the Cross. Here we can read and reread the beauty of the poem written by Oscar Wilde. How can the red rose from his mouth and the white rose from his heart bring the will and love of Christ into the light day from a terrible dark hour, for every single one of us? How can we honestly apply the words of Christ “forgive them, for they know not what they do" to our own unforgiving moments toward others? Look up at the face of Christ who is looking at us. See beyond the eyes. See with the eyes of the heart. His suffering can silence our grumbling. In the silence of adoration, one heart to another, reaching for an understanding beyond words, Jesus is calling us. We listen deeply, our heart and His Heart is wordless conversation. This is the way to understand the words of Oscar Wilde, where the white rose becomes whiter and the red rose would blow more red. Meditating upon the images of the red rose from his mouth and the white rose from his heart, we can see more clearly the image of the suffering Christ in today's suffering church. A church attacked from within and without, just as He was throttled and taunted on His way to the cross. There is anger toward those who lead us now. Some have failed to be faithful to their priestly vows. Some have betrayed and compromised His Divine Truth and His commandments. There are also broken families, on which our future depends. They are disintegrating. There are also political and social divisions that continue to be a real threat to the future of our country. The most fundamental right to protect the innocent human life from the conception until natural death is not respected. During Holy Week this year we deeply look at the suffering Christ. In that silence of mystery we humbly place before Him ourselves, begging for mercy, being able to repeat with Him "Father forgive them; for they know not what they do." Only then we can see the

meaning of the words “Out of his mouth a red, red rose! Out of his heart a white! For who can say by what strange way Christ brings his will to light..." Yes indeed Christ will bring his will to light, the light of His resurrection and Glory, our hope and our salvation! Amen!

1. Examine your conscience. 2. Be sincerely sorry for your sins. 3. Confess your sins to a priest. 4. Resolve to amend your life. 5. After your confession, do the penance the priest assigns.

“Bless me, Father, in this confession. It has been - (state the length of time) – since my last confession. These are

my sins.” Then tell your mortal sins and the number of times committed. If you

have no mortal sin to confess, then confess the venial sins you have committed since your last

confession. When you have finished telling your sins, you should say: “For these and all the sins of my past, I am truly sorry.” The priest now gives the necessary advice, assigns your penance and asks you to say the Act of Contrition. Then wait and listen as the priest gives the absolution. Then say “Thank you, Father”, then leave the confessional and then

perform the penance assigned by the priest.

“O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all My love.
