Message from Fr. Pergjini-

It is the end of April and after few days we enter into the month of May! What a beautiful and gorgeous month it is! We’ve waited for so long, through the dark and the cold, and all of a sudden, the trees and the flowers are bursting with fresh young colors, and the soft voice of spring moves gently on the breezes.

For us as Catholics, May is also the month of our blessed Mother. The flowers everywhere remind us of the humble and tender love she had for her Son. It is the love every mother has for her own child, only this was a very special Child.

In celebration of what is new and beautiful, May is also the month when our young students receive their first Holy Communion. They have been preparing for this and for their first Confession, through the winter months. I remember very well my own first Confession and first Holy Communion, so long ago. They were holy days for me and for our family. It is through this memory that I try and enter the world of our wonderful young people now, with all the feelings they have, hoping for joy in their love for God.

As I am writing now, I picture their faces and I hear within myself their innocent voices asking questions and speaking easily about their thoughts and feelings. Their words come from their hearts. They listen carefully, reflect prayerfully, and are willing to enter into a world of God’s own beauty and joy!

Before going to their first Confession, I shared a little story with the class. Recently, I called one of my cousins, on his birthday. We spoke for a while and then, to my surprise, he shared with me a very moving event from his childhood. He was five years old. It was before he had made his first Confession and his first Holy Communion. He used to enjoy visits with one of our cousins. She was very kind to all of us, and often gave us lovely small gifts. One day, visiting at her home, he spied a beautiful small silver box. At the moment, no one was in the room. All of a sudden, a dark temptation came over him, and he slipped the beautiful silver box into his pocket, taking it home without asking for it. Once he was back in his room, he hid the little box under his pillow, and tried to sleep. That night he had a dream about the silver box. A voice was telling him what he did was very wrong. He woke up with a tormented fear. As quickly as he could, he went back to his cousin’s house, and quietly returned the silver box to the very place where he found it. That same day, our humble, wise, and most generous cousin, may she rest in peace, came over to his house, and offered the beautiful little box to him, as a gift. In the grip of powerful, childhood emotions he never forgot, my cousin continued his story. He was stunned. As soon as he saw the box he felt a tremendous guilt. It was like seeing an evil thing. He recoiled with fear and refused to take it. Our saintly cousin insisted he should have the beautiful silver box, and she never mentioned anything about what happened the day before.

His emotions were so strong; he started to cry, still refusing to take it. His feelings had changed. He no longer felt an attraction for the beautiful silver box. Instead, he felt overcome by a deep fear for his sinful action, and what might happen to him. I finished the story and paused for a moment in silence, allowing the children to resolve this in their own minds. The young people were looking at me, and for a little while there was deep silence in the classroom. Then the hands began to go up, many with important questions and insightful reflections. I tried my best to answer them. Some were funny, some were very thoughtful. One of the children, a little fellow who always touched me with his deep spiritual insights, replied that even in our dreams, God tells us when we do bad things. Christ wants us to be very honest, and to tell the truth. Looking at this young boy, I thought of my cousin who shared the story with me. Yes indeed I told them, we do not go to Confession to impress the priest or to look good. We go to tell the truth, to be honest, and to ask for God’s forgiveness. Then we are fresh and clean, and we can shine like the beautiful new colors of springtime. Then we are ready to receive the body of Our Lord Jesus Christ in our Holy Communion.

Finally I shared with our Holy Communion class, the story of Saint Bernadette, who is kneeling humbly in our beautiful grotto, and looking forever with loving anticipation toward our dear Blessed Mother. Before she died, Bernadette was asked by someone to speak about the happiest day of her life. The person asking the question, thought she was going to say, it was the day when she saw the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. Instead, Bernadette humbly replied: The happiest day of my life was the day when I received my first Holy Communion. Yes indeed, it is the day when Our Lord Jesus Christ enters into our own life, bringing the beauty of His own grace and new life directly and personally to us. At that moment, our body becomes one with His own body and blood. The path of Heaven opens before us, as He leads us forward, gently and lovingly to be one with His own Sacred Heart, now and forever. This is what Bernadette knew. This is what all the saints know. This is what we learn, on the day of our first Holy Communion. It is May! What a beautiful and gorgeous month it is!
