The Microsystem

• I am doing my practicum at Glen Stewart Primary school, a Kindergarten to grade three school. This is the largest Primary school on Prince Edward Island, having a population of 600 students. The area includes students from Stratford and surrounding areas, including some Rural areas. It offers French Immersion. The students come from a different level of socio-economic background, from struggling to the affluent family. Each student comes with their own set of beliefs and values, and each need to be respected.

Eastern School DistrictExosystem

• The Eastern School District is the largest school district on Prince Edward Island. There are approximately 13, 400 students in Kindergarten through to Grade 12. There are 36 schools within the Eastern School Board.

• The District is governed by an official trustee, who was appointed by the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. The Eastern school board members were previously elected by those in the community however the officials were let go by the Minister of Education in 2010.

Board of Trustees • Minister Doug Curry, in the fall session of the legislature, was given

legislation to fire the board of trustees. These are elected officials by committees. This act, shows the power that the governments have to dictate what occurs in the schools. It is an example of how the Exo system impacts the students. Rules and regulations can be changed.

• District Literacy Action Plan • Inclusion policy • Drug and Alcohol policyThese are examples of what issues the Board of Trustees have power over.

Curriculum

Curriculum is always kept in mind when we are teachers although it certainly is only one part of it. Being student centered is first and foremost and why we became teachers. There are so many factors that impact a student during a day, that cause distractions, irritations, and changes for the student. Some are positive while others can destroy a student. • We, as teachers can create a culture of acceptance and

provide strength for our students.
