The 2015 season will likely be a turning point for the Kamloops Broncos’ franchise. Last year, the team set records in wins, points scored, passing yards and rushing yards — and changed the culture of our program. We made playoffs for the second year in a row and lost a heartbreaking game to the Langley Rams by two points, 48-46. As a franchise, we will build on the success and seek out that first playoff win. In order to keep the momentum going, we are starting our sponsorship push before this year ends, looking to secure funding to help us reach our goal of a B.C. Football Conference championship. It is through the continued support of great sponsors and the Kamloops Blazers Sports Foundation that we remain a remarkable organization.

Our new goal is to not only build our franchise, but to assist all levels of football in Kamloops — from minor to high school. We want to see the city embrace football again, and return Kamloops to the glory days of being a football powerhouse, as it was in the 1980s and 1990s. Our board has added key personnel to assist with on- and off-field operations and will look to add more key components to make our organization a leader in our community.

The Broncos are proud to announce former CFLer Brad Yamaoka as our fifth head coach. Brad brings a wealth of coaching experience in the high school, junior, university and professional ranks. Brad, who used to play for the B.C. Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, is working diligently to round out his coaching staff.

The 2014 season was one of many firsts for our program. We set franchise records in passing and offence, and developed a ground game that saw us finish second in the league in rushing, thanks in part to third-year running back Jacob Palmarin and rookie Aaron Morran. Our receiving corps was led by B.C. Lions’ practice-roster player Derek Yachison and Devin Csincsa. Yet again, we will be returning this strong offensive nucleus for the 2015 season. Our offence had three BCFC all-stars in 2014 — Yachison at receiver, Palmarin at running back and Cam Brown getting his second consecutive all-star nod on the offensive line. Yachison was also named top receiver for the entire league and was a 2014 Canadian Junior Football League All-Canadian.

Our mandate as a program is not about wins and losses, but about the development of the athlete. Therefore, as an organization, we judge our success not on wins and losses, but

on players we assist in making it to the next level. Last season, we saw two of our players move on to CIS programs and currently have nine players attending university playing football.

We are continuing with our purpose of giving Kamloops products a chance to compete on a nationally recognized stage in football, after their high-school careers are finished. The core of our team is made up of local athletes, although we do bring in players from outside the city. One third of our team consists of local high school players. Our team is in need of funding to help continue to grow football in Kamloops. Our players are required to pay $500 in team fees, which go toward insurance, travel and equipment costs. The only assistance given to our players is the Draft-A-Bronco Program, in which we help the players find a local business like you to sponsor them in covering these fees.

We offer families in Kamloops an affordable and entertaining event which appeals to all ages. With an average of 500 fans attending our games, we offer a great way to introduce your company and brand to each and every one of them. Your sponsorship dollars enable us to give young men between the ages of 17 and 22 an opportunity to play junior football. The Kamloops Broncos are a viable stepping stone to local athletes who now have an option to stay in town to further their football career after high school, whether they remain here and play five seasons in our program, or move on to university or college programs after a year or two. Many of our out-of-town athletes now call Kamloops home, having moved here to work or attend Thompson Rivers University.

Football’s reach has grown immensely since the inception of the Kamloops Broncos and we hope to extend it even further with your help. Please take the time to consider this season’s sponsorship package. If you have any questions, please contact me at 250-371-1748.

On behalf of the B.C. Football Conference, welcome fans, sponsors, volunteers, players and coaches to the 2015 season.

With the great work each team’s board of directors, volunteers and coaches have put into their organizations during the off-season, this should make for some great football in 2015. This year, there will be a balanced schedule, with teams playing a home and away game against each other. The ultimate goal is the Canadian Junior Football League championship. The Canadian Bowl will be hosted by the winner of the Prairie Football Conference on Nov. 7. Each of our six teams are vying to represent the BCFC at this game.

I would like to thank the sponsors for their support and thank the B.C. Lions for their continued support of the BCFC and all of amateur football throughout B.C.

Most of all, thank you to the great fans of our game — you make the countless hours of volunteer work worthwhile when you’re cheering in the stands.

If you’re looking for more on your favourite team or players, be sure to log on to our website at bcjuniorfootball.ca for current news, webcasts and player statistics. We’re also on Facebook and Twitter.

It has been a long off-season and I am very excited to be back on the field. Our 2015 campaign started in November when I decided to jump on board as head coach. With several recruiting trips within B.C. and Alberta, we have assembled a very diverse group of athletes who will wear the Blue and Orange with pride. With the nucleus of our offence returning, we focused on shoring up our young defence. With that being said, many of our defensive players have returned and made some considerable gains from last season.

We are looking to turn the corner this season and prove that last year was not a flash in the pan. Our goals are simple — make the playoffs and win a championship. With the most productive offence in the country last

year, there is a lot of pressure on our players to perform at a high level. Offensive co-ordinator Mike Faisthuber has developed this offence over the last few years and the veterans know it very well. The new players will need to learn fast if theywant to see time on the field. The defence and special teams will need to step up their game if we are going to compete with the powerhouses of our league. New defensive co-ordinator Todd Graham is adjusting well to the Canadian game and will have the guys ready come game time.

Thank you to all our fans and community businesses who have supported us over the years. We look forward to seeing you all in the stands and, more importantly, hearing you in the stands.

By Brenden EscottBy now, you’ve likely heard a thing or two about Kamloops Broncos standout receiver Derek Yachison. The Winnipeg product is entering his fifth and final year of BCFC eligibility with little left to prove as he’s already captured the attention of the CFL’s B.C. Lions. Yachison spent time in the Lions’ rookie camp last season before getting the call up to the practice roster in the late going of the CFL season.

Although he never suited up in the Orange and Black, he was afforded the same opportunity this spring and after once again cracking the Lions’ practice roster, Yachison finds himself logging a lot of mileage on the Coquihalla highway between Surrey and Kamloops—practising with the Lions during the week and playing for the Broncos on the weekends.

“[The off-season has] been a long process, a lot longer than last year, but it’s paid off,” said Yachison.

“Of course, it’s going to be busy doing it all season as opposed to just the last couple of months, but I’m looking forward to it.”

His time with the Lions has helped Yachison mature both on and off the field and, as he enters his final season with the Broncos, his veteran leadership will be invaluable to the rest of the roster.

“Learning from the veterans on the Lions and how they handle the younger guys who come into camp is definitely something I can translate onto the field here with Kamloops. Even just showing the younger guys the way around and the right way of doing things. We may not be a professional team but we’re pretty much semi-pro, so it’s about learning how to be a pro on and off the field,” said Yachison.

The Broncos are coming off their best season in franchise history in 2014, finishing with their first winning record and narrowly missing their first-ever playoff victory against the eventual league champion Langley Rams, but Yachison believes the best is yet to come from himself and the Broncos team.

“With both teams, it’s about just doing the best that I can as far as progressing. I think with the lions that’s a big thing. With the Broncos, it’s my fifth year and I’m expected to be a leader and be up there in the league in receiving, so I’m just going to try and be the best veteran I can be. I think making the playoffs the past couple of years has been huge for us and I think we can make a push for the Cullen Cup.”

The one they call ‘Young Kamloops’ will have one last season, or perhaps less if the Lions come calling, to cement his legacy with the Broncos franchise and propel himself to the next chapter of his career.

The Sports Legacy Fund is an investment in the sporting community of Kamloops and surrounding region by the Kamloops Blazers Sports Society and Blazers Sports

Foundation. It has been established as a result of the 2007 sale of the WHL Kamloops Blazers Hockey franchise and by the commitment of the members of these organizations

to sustainable sport initiatives through opportunity, growth and excellence.

The Society recognizes both financial and organizational support as valuable use of the income from the Legacy Fund. Wherever possible, financial support is accompanied by

efforts to build the capacity and effectiveness of amateur sport organizations.
