Message from the

Head of Lower School

Ms Sarah Shuttleworth

[email protected]

Firstly a huge thank you to all of you for your support of our fund raising activities. The Mufti day and donations across the school raised a good amount of money and the collection of goods has already been donated around our local community. The Bake Sale at Early Years raised a super 6,600 THB and the Primary Bake Sale a whopping 7,500THB. This money will go to help those in our local community affected by the flooding. As you can see from the photos the children enjoyed the Bake Sale!! I believe the staff did too! Father‟s Day was a chance to share breakfast at Early Years and as usual it was well attended. We had toast, coffee or juice (and of course cake) with a Father‟s Day card for all the Dads! Both Primary and Early Years have been busy learning Christmas songs for their concerts this week. We will all participate in a few festive activities as Santa Claus is due to visit both campuses this week. Early Years parents will receive written reports this week. Primary parents are invited to meet their child‟s teacher on Friday 16

th

from 1pm. All Reading books and Library books will be collected in this week! Many thanks to Miss June and Miss Benita who have spent most of this term working on the Early Years library to get all the books covered and the system computerised. Hopefully it will all be fully operational in Term 2. At Early Years we welcome Miss Pook who is supporting in the Pre-Nursery class alongside Miss A. At Windsor Park we welcome Miss Mai who is working in both Year 5 and 6. The Playgroup Christmas party went well last Friday. We had a Christmas tree game, a lovely snack and a special visit from Santa Claus! As you can see from the photos the children all had a good time. A thank you to Santa for sparing the time to visit us! As thoughts turn to Term 2 we will all be preparing for Sports Day, the Early Years Teddy Bear‟s picnic and Primary residential trips. More information will be sent in January. School begins again on 9 January following our early start timetables. Playgroup commences again on Wednesday 11 January. After school clubs will begin in week one of Term 2. May I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas holidays and of course a very Happy New Year! Ms Shuttleworth Head of Lower School

The topic in Dinosaur Class this term has been parties and celebrations and we‟ve certainly had a lot of both! First it was Charlie‟s birthday (he‟s our class puppet). We made him cards and wrapped presents, read books about birthdays, made him a banana cake and had a surprise party. He got a bit excited opening his presents, as you can see in the photo. Any-one who wants to know more about it can come and see the display in our class. Next it was Nicha‟s birthday and you can see the fantastic dinosaur cake she brought in to share with her friends. As soon as that was over we started on our Christmas preparations! The children have done a great job of learning our concert song – thanks to all of you who have been practising with them at home. Let‟s hope they don‟t get stage fright on Thursday. In Family Fridays they made all the beautiful stars for the backdrop and the snowmen at the front. In Write Dance they have been practising straight and curved lines which are also up in the class. They are all doing very well in swimming and we have just one more session for the last children to try to complete their Tadpole Certificate (don‟t worry I won‟t send them in if they‟re likely to get frostbite!). All the teachers worked hard to create Santa‟s Workshop and The Polar Express station under the stairs in the Role Play Room, and the whole school has enjoyed a variety of learning experiences under there. In Maths we have been looking at using 1 baht coins to buy things. They had fun queuing up to buy tickets for the Polar Express then heading off to the North Pole, as well as visit-ing different types of shop to buy different objects. They take turns to be the customers and the shop keeper. We have had a number of creatures visiting the class as well and you can see that Justin has learnt how to hold a baby rabbit safely and to be calm and gentle around it. We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and look forward to seeing you for the concert on Thursday. Miss Donna and Miss Am

We welcome a new Teaching Assistant, Miss Pook, who joined us this month. Thank you all for a lovely first term with your beautiful children. We have all had a wonderful time and have really enjoyed our time in Giraffe class. We are learning about shapes, colours and numbers this term and your children have learned well. I have included some photographs of our Father‟s Day party. The children look so happy with their parents. It is fortunate that we have such caring parents as this produces happy and contented children. I hope that this newsletter finds you well and may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. I am really looking forward to next year with Giraffe class. It will be lovely to watch the children grow and develop and they learn even more. Once again, thank you for your support. Miss Michelle, Miss A, Miss Pook

Reception Bears class has found that this half of term has been very busy and very short! We have learnt about the importance of helping each other and those in the community around us by taking part in school activities like Mufti Day and the Bake Sale. It has been very heartwarming listening to the children tell of their experiences during the flooding and talk of all the dif ferent ways that we can help others by not only raising money, but by giving clean food and water to those less fortunate than our-selves. I was also really pleased to hear some of the children say that they could also help building new homes for the people that lost theirs in the floods as well as make food for them. EARLY YEARS CAMPUS THE BROMSGROVIAN

BROMSGROVE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL THAILAND

Reception Tigers have been working incredibly hard this half term and everyone has now been given a reading book with words in. We are all able to write our letters in beautiful cursive writing, we are all able to count up to 10 and way beyond for many of us, and our teachers Miss Sao, Miss D and Miss Philippa are incredibly proud of what we have achieved this term. We are all licking our paws a little but we know that next term we have lots more hard work ahead of us. Christmas seems to have come around very quickly this year and we have all enjoyed learning about what Christmas is all about and some of the history behind it. We have heard a rumour that Santa may come and see us as we have all tried so hard this term. Our Christmas show is on Thursday and this year we are singing a song called „Here we go round the Christmas tree‟. Miss Philippa is off to the UK for Christmas but has promised to bring some snow back for us if she sees any. Merry Christmas to everyone and a very Happy New Year! RECEPTION TIGERS NEWS

We have been busy catching up with our Literacy and Maths and continuing with our topic work. Lots of news centred around

the floods and we have talked about how lucky we are as a school.

Years 1 and 2 have been practising for the Christmas concert. They have been learning three song; “Silver Bells”, “O Come All

Ye Faithful” and “Jingle Bell Rock”. All the children have worked very hard and are excited about performing in front of their

parents.

Goodness me we do seem to have been very busy recently, catching up on work missed dur-ing the flooding, and getting ready for Christmas! The children have been doing lots of measuring during Maths lessons. They used a trundle wheel and a metre stick to meas-ure the playground and other things around school. They had to choose which way of measur-ing was most appropriate for the task. They also finished off writing some wonderful individual re-ports on the Flying Dragon Liz-ards of Asia. They researched images for their reports using Google Images and then used Microsoft Publisher and Word Art to create their front covers. Well Done Dolphin Class! On a lighter note, we have also put up our lovely pink Christmas Tree and begun making our Christmas stockings! Dolphin Class would like to wish everyone a wonderful Merry Christmas and hope everyone has a great holiday! Thank you for your continuing support, Miss Emma and Miss Pook.

Year 4 have travelled back in time by 2000 years as they‟ve been learning about

the Ancient Romans. The children built their very own Colosseum in the class-

room, ate a rotten Roman feast, and tried on a real Roman army helmet as they

imagined what it was like to be a legionary from the past. The children have been

getting creative as they made Ancient Roman coins, and then made digital in-

structions using PowerPoint on the computers which next year‟s Year 4 children

can follow as they learn about the same topic in 2012! The children made some

fantastic newspaper reports as they travelled back in time (in our Colosseum

tardis) to become journalists and report on exciting events that they witnessed in

Ancient Rome. They typed these up using ICT when they got back to 2012.

The children have certainly worked hard and all deserve to have a very happy

Christmas.

YEAR 5 (EAGLES)

In Year 5, we have been collecting data as part of our maths and ICT work. We started by looking at how often certain letters of the alphabet appeared on a page of text and made a frequency table to record the data. We then used Excel to create profes-sional looking bar charts to display the data. Here are some examples of our work: We have also been learning about keyboard short-cuts. Santa Claus and the Christmas tree, which was intro-duced into Britain by Prince Albert, Victoria’s husband,

both became popular during queen Victoria’s reign.

It is great to see all the children safely back at school after our enforced extended break. Back home in England, Christmas is a very special time in Primary schools with all the children becom-ing more and more excited as the holiday draws closer. We have been busy rehearsing for the Christmas concert and doing some Christmas related work in class. In Maths we did an investigation, working systematically and looking for pattern, to work out exactly how many presents “my true love sent to me” over the twelve days of Christmas. If you want to find out ask the children! We have also been doing some excellent stuff using 4, 4‟s to calculate all the numbers from 1- 100 which utilizes all of our 5R‟s for lifelong learning. Also we have discovered how the Victorian era in England changed how Christmas was celebrated by the masses into the Christmas that is so familiar today. Christmas cards, Santa Claus, presents, holidays, crackers, eating turkey and the Christ-mas tree all became established in Victorian England. After the recent difficulties, here‟s wishing Thailand and its peo-ple a wonderful Christmas break and a very Happy New Year. Mr Ellis Year 6 Teacher

A „Business and Enterprise Day‟ was held this year

for talented business studies students at Patana

International School. Four of our gifted students,

Cherry, Ben, Dennis and Hook, attended the event

with students from Patana, ASB, Regents, NIST,

Harrow and Traill.

The event involved students adding value to a large

box of cupcakes using a number of delicious ingre-

dients. They also had to think about marketing

strategy and advertising material to help sell their

cupcakes. After a morning of preparation, the stu-

dents were set loose at lunchtime to sell their cup-

cakes to the Secondary School students and teach-

ers.

There were points awarded for teams who made

the most profit, for those who sold the most cakes,

for the best cake produced and for the most effec-

tive advert. Cherry‟s group won the competition!

The day was fun and students gained a very practi-

cal experience of the real business world.

Mr Evans, our teacher of business studies said,

„The day had a delicious outcome with some real

learning going on.‟

Energy Project Update

Bromsgrove welcomed visitors from the Ministry of Energy and Chiang Mai University on 8 December to see what pro-

gress we had made with our projects on renewable energy. They spent some time in the department with Mr Linscott, Miss

Kwang and I. Our guests were happy with what we had done and activities that are being developed for Terms 2 and 3.

Some of our projects are being completed and others are in the pipeline.

All Secondary students are invited to join the energy project club which is run as an extracurricular activity. For further

information ask Mr Linscott or Mr Rowdene. Dr Thongchai oversees the project and is Deputy Director of ERDI (Energy

TUDOR HOUSE NEWS The last newsletter of the term and what a very unusual term it has been! The floods meant that the school was closed for a time and although most went home (the Koreans to very cold weather), some did have to stay in house with staff. We felt very iso-lated and realized how difficult it was for local people when we had a week when there were no deliveries of milk, bread or fruit. Happily we are now back in house and Christmas is approaching fast. The tree twinkles in the foyer producing a lovely atmos-phere. Girls are busy preparing for the Christmas Concert and the Bromsgrove‟s Got Talent show, so as usual they are very busy as well as catching up with missed lessons. Last Friday the Year 12 and 13s went out for their Christmas celebration and enjoyed a delicious (and ample meal) as well as listening to live bands. Thanks to Morika and Bex, aided by Miss Philippa, for all their hard work organising the event. There were some beautiful outfits and hairstyles and they all came back laughing and smiling after an evening when they had been together as a group away from the House and had a great time. The Boarders‟ Christmas Party will be on Wednesday evening and looks like being a fun evening with a BBQ, party games and then a disco – more balloons to blow up. It is an event that the boarders look forward to very much and I am sure will be a great success. On Saturday night bedtime was forgotten for quite a while as many of the students sat outside watching the lunar eclipse. It was a beautiful clear night and they were able to watch and photograph the event with awe. An experience many will remember for a long time. Wishing you all a happy and peaceful holiday. WINDSOR HOUSE NEWS

This is the first time since the floods that I have found time to write to you all. It was curious that during the floods we seemed to be here unaffected by all the water until we tried to leave. Then we found out that Windsor was an island surrounded on all sides. I am happy to say however that everything has now returned to normal although with more boys in the House. The extra boys have made a great impact on life in the House. We have had to open the top floor and the younger students who wandered around in twos and threes, now seem everywhere: a wonderful sight to behold though the noise level has increased! I have included a couple of pictures from a night in the Sports Hall. I counted over 70 students in the hall at one time playing three sports without anyone interrupting the others‟ games. Football at one end, basketball at the other and a large group in the middle screaming with laughter as they played dodgeball! Nights like this are getting more common and are a great pleasure to be part of. Christmas is upon us and the annual setting up of the Christmas tree. This is a great event as boys from all year groups want to help hang the baubles and decorate the tree. The final event will be the Christmas party and disco on Wednesday of the last week. Everyone is excited and it promises to end the year with a bang. It only leaves me therefore to thank you for giving myself and all the boarding staff the opportunity to look after your sons. They bring joy and excitement to our lives. I hope that everyone has an enjoyable break and returns from the festivities ready to face the rest of the year. Thank you and a very Happy Christmas and a merry New Year. Mike Dawson Head of Boys‟ Boarding
